MARY GIBSON

Mary Leona “Lea” Gibson, 88, of the Sayre Christian Village in Lexington, formerly of Lancaster & Perry County, passed away Friday, September 5, 2008 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born October 31, 1919 in Letcher County, she was the daughter of the late Enoch “Lee” and Angeline Proffitt Webb. She was the widow of Lawrence Gibson.

She was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Gibson was a retired nursing sssistant from Garrard County Memorial Hospital. She was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the United Mine Workers Association. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening, cooking, University of Kentucky sports, Cincinnati Reds baseball, and taking care of others.

Mrs. Gibson leaves behind: three sons, Ron (Jackie) Gibson of Harrodsburg, Von (Sheila) Gibson and Lawrence “Shang” (Sharon) Gibson both of Lancaster; one daughter, Nancy (Carl) Landrum of Lexington; 15 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; several step-great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Connie Sutton of Lancaster.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Lonnie Gibson, two daughters, Lorene “Dean” Durbin and Brenda Glacken, four brothers, Vernon, Goldie, Delmar, and Orell Webb, one sister, Ardelia Mooney, four half-brothers, Willie, Jason Andrew, Lloyd, and Exodus Webb, four half-sisters, Ritter Webb, Maggie Hall, Nora Toney and Eliza Jane Holbrook.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 8, at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Lancaster with Rev. Jim Cook officiating the service. Burial was in Lancaster Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Lonnie and Lawrence David Gibson, Joseph Glacken, Ray Vanover, Carl Landrum, Kevin and Rod Napier and Chuck Martin.

Honorary Pallbearers were Chris, Joey, Scott, Carl, and Larry Gibson, Nathan Gooch, John W. Stacy, Carl Stidham, Raleigh, Arlie, and Roland Campbell, Ron Milburn, Bobby Hall, Ronnie Sutton, Larry Simpson, Jordan Napier, Carl Martin, Ashley Lawrence Reynolds and Tammi Geierman.

Memorial contributions suggested to Sayre Christian Village or Hospice of the Bluegrass.

Ramsey Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

JERRY HAFLEY

Jerry Ann Hafley, 65, Lebanon, died Saturday August 23, 2008, in Campbellsville after an illness.

Survivors include: four sons, Dale and Buck Hafley of Lebanon, John Hafley of Harrodsburg and Bobby Brown of Loretto; three brothers, Roy and Paul Ray Brown, both of Campbellsville, and Welby Newton of Gravel Switch; two sisters, Anna Mason of Lebanon and Faye Tungate of Campbellsville; and 11 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Brown and Marie Mason; a daughter, Linda Hafley; and a sister, Mary Reardon.

Funeral services were held at noon August 28 at the Campbell-DeWitt Funeral Home, Lebanon, with burial in Old Liberty Cemetery, Bradfordsville. Rev. Ricky Shannon officiated.

Pallbearers were J. J. Reardon, Charles Anthony Yantis, Patrick Whitlock, Brian Garrett, William Chad Wagoner and Paul Dyer.

Campbell-DeWitt Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

DRETHEA HINES

Drethea “Rose” Hines, 70 , of Stanford, Ky., died Wednesday September 3, 2008 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

The daughter of Dorothy Wilson Hubble of Moreland and the Late Ruby Lee Hubble, she was born Feb. 12, 1938 in Liberty, Ky. She was the widow of James Hines and a homemaker.

She is survived by: three daughters, Patricia Hines of Lexington, Pamela Hines and Susan Moore, both of Moreland; four sons, Paul Lee (Deborah) Hines of Moreland, Daniel ( Stacy) Alexander of Bowling Green, James David Hines and Timothy Alexander both of Danville; a special friend, David Young of Perryville; three sisters, Jamie (James) Trisler of Harrodsburg, Francena Phillips and Rita (Bobby) Craig both of Danville; two brothers, Donnie (Pat) Hubble of Harrodsburg, and Ronnie (Ruby) Hubble of Moreland; and seven grandchildren, Haley Boyd, Ashley Taylor, Joshua Alexander, Tamara Hines, Latosha Hines, Joshua Hines and Marisha Hines.

She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jessica Dawn Hines.

A graveside service was held Saturday, September 6, at Junction City Cemetery with Rev. Dale Denton officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to The Drethea Hines Memorial Fund c/o Farmers National Bank.

GARNER LUCAS

Garner T. Lucas, 58, of Rush, KY, passed away Monday, September 8, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Lucas was born November 14, 1949, in Columbus, OH, a son of Ralph and Elizabeth Alexander Lucas.

He served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietname War, retired from AK Steel and was a member of American Legion Post 93 and the Ashland Eagles. Garner was “very fond” of his tractor and his cows. To him, farming was a way of life, not just a job.

Survivors include: two daughters, Charlotte (Robert)Lucas of Harrodsburg, and Michelle Lucas of Nicholasville; five grandchildren, Braxton, Kylee, Tamren, Chelse, and Kaylin.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, September 11, 2008, at Klaiber Cemetery in Rush

A message of comfort will be offered by Pastor Mickey King.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg.

SHELBY MCAFEE

Shelby Jean Mattingly McAfee, 70, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 26, 1937 she was the daughter of the late Walter and Ruth Hargette Murphy and was the wife of Doug McAfee.

She had been an employee of Cricketeer for 32 years, Jonathan Logan for two years and then an employee of Matsushita. She was a member of Pioneer Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: four sons, John Derek (Julie) Mattingly, James W. (Lisa) Mattingly, Jerry Wayne (Rhonda) Mattingly and Jeffrey Neal (Valerie) Mattingly, all of Harrodsburg; one step-son, Dorsey (Vickie) McAfee of Lexington; two step-daughters, Patsy (Gary) Simmons of Jacksonville, FL and Betty Lunsford of Versailles; two brothers, Jack (Betty) Murphy and Bill (Reva) Murphy, both of Harrodsburg; five grandchildren; two-step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a half-brother, Bud Murphy.

The funeral was held Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008 at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Brian Burkhead and Ken Klemme officiating. Burial was in the Shawnee Run Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jerry Farmer, Brandon McAfee, D. J. McAfee, James Murphy, Tim Murphy, Justin Long, Curt Lewis and Clint Hunt.

Honorary pallbearers were Brian Murphy and Derek Mattingly.

NELLIE RILEY

Nellie J. Walls Riley, 72, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born Nov. 26, 1935 in Garrard County, she was the daughter of the late William Clayton and Ella Mae Steele Walls and was the widow of Hansford Lee Riley.

She was a retired machine operator from Modine Manufacturing after 28 years of service and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include: two daughters, Rita Holliday of Salvisa and Nora Coats of Harrodsburg; four sisters, Betty Satterly, Ann Hardin and Roxie Boswell, all of Harrodsburg and Dorothy Young of Lawrenceburg; one step-brother, Walter (Lucy) Rose of Tennessee; five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Vickie Lee Riley and a sister, Nora Wells.

The funeral was held Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. James Harley and Daryl Catlett officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lee Hart, Adam Hart, James Michael Yates, Jerry Holliday, Nick Lewis and Danny Holliday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.

BOONE WELLS

Boone E. Wells, 65, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 at his residence in Lexington.

Born Oct. 20, 1942 in Harlan, he was the son of the late Roy and Bessie Wells and was the husband of Dora Long Wells.

He was a construction foreman for Tutt Incorporated and was a member of Southland Christian Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: three daughters, Jody (Fred) Griffin of Lexington and Kathy Wells and Karen Wells, both of O'Fallon, IL; two brothers, Preston Wells of Jackson County and Lester Wells of Powder Springs, GA; one sister, Frances Crawford of Powder Springs, GA; one granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held Friday, Sept. 5, 2008 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Brad Allred officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Shane Gibson, Bud Terry, Doug Webb, Steve Rainwater, Danny Grant and Gray Grant.

Honorary pallbearers were Robert Young, Ben Rainwater and Ezra Hill.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, Ky 40504.

JAMES SCOTT

James Warren "J. W." Scott, 87, Willisburg, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, Danville.

He was a native of Washington County, born Nov. 6, 1920.

He was a member of Willisburg Baptist Church and a retired employee of the Kentucky Department of Highways and a retired farmer.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Glenda Baker; a great-grandson; his parents, Clarence and Stella Humes Scott; a brother, Charles Scott; and two sisters, Frances Scott and Doris Scott.

Survivors include: his wife, Merty Baker Scott; four daughters, Donna Harlow, Mount Washington , Alice Pratt, Liberty, Bonnie Warner, Bloomfield, and Janice Bottom, Mackville; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Cleo Scott, Louisville; and three sisters, Gladys Hood, Louisville, Alma Coulter, Mount Eden, and LaVerne Hendricks, Shepherdsville.

The funeral was held Tuesday, September 9, at the Willisburg Baptist Church with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Willisburg. Rev. J. W. Hatfield, the church pastor, officiated.

Pallbearers were Cully Harlow, Brett Harlow, Darin Pratt, Jeremy Bottom, Neal Devine and Jeremy Smith.

Honorary pallbearers were Lisa Winchester, Jamie Smith, Amy Hensley, Allison Hamm and Hope Devine.

Carey & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

DONALD COSBY

J. Donald Cosby, 82, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008 at the Baptist Hospital East in Louisville.

Born March 15, 1926, he was the son of the late Claude and Martha Million Cosby and was the husband of Sara Cunningham Cosby.

He was the co-founder and president of the Old Mid-Land Warehouse and Trucking Co., a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, served for seven years in the Air Force and was also a member of the Pendennis Club, Hurstbourne Country Club and the Audubon Club.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one sister, Ruby Spaulding of Shelbyville and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Evan Cosby, two sisters, Annelle Thompson and Hazel Haick and a brother, Charles Cosby.

The funeral was held Monday, Sept. 15, 2008 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home, with Chaplain Gary Story officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Christ United Methodist Church, 4614 Brownsboro Road, St. Matthews, KY 40207.

JAMES HARP

James Curwood Harp, 85, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2008 at his residence.

Born July 16, 1923 in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Lillian Pendleton Harp and was the husband of Edna Collier Harp.

He was a retired farmer, Harrodsburg Municipal Water Plant employee and a member of the Mercer Church of Christ.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two sons, Mike (Karen) Harp of Nicholasville and Perry (Teresa) Harp of Harrodsburg; two daughters, Patricia (Clifford) Houp and Janet Lynn (Jerry) Arnold, both of Danville; one brother, Benjamin Franklin Harp, Jr. of Somerset.; three sisters, Marietta Wells of Nicholasville, Lydia Brumfield of Lexington and Jean Belle Bryant of Berea; eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Danny and David Harp and a grand-daughter, Kimberly Anne Houp.

The funeral was held Monday, Sept. 15, 2008 with Jason Pierce officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Robert Phelps, Jeremy Arnold, Steven Huddleston, Dylan Harp, David Proctor and Ralph Phillips, III.

EUGENE MAYES

Eugene Lee Mayes, 85, of Harrodsburg, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born July 28, 1923 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Roy Earl and Reva Adkinson Mayes and was the husband of Lillie Freeman Mayes,.

He was a retired farmer.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one daughter, Shirley (Jim) Gunter of Punta Gorda, FL; two sons, McKinley (Gayle) Mayes of Punta Gorda, FL and Orban (Gayle) Mayes of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Mary Ellen O'Keefe of Louisville and Lois Atchison of MO; one brother, Maurice Mayes of Harrodsburg; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Lynn Mayes.

The funeral was held Tuesday, Sept. 16 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with David Crowe officiating. Burial was in the Bruner's Chapel Cemetery in Harrodsburg.

Pallbearers were Chris Mayes, Jarrod Mayes, Danny Mayes, Jad Farhat, Jerry Bottom and Timothy Bottom.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Alzheimer's Association or Heritage Hospice.
