Donald Wasson, Vietname War pilot

Donald Lynn Wasson had two careers in civilian life, preceded by another in the military.

An accountant and an attorney, Mr. Wasson, 55, of Ft. Thomas, died Friday night at Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati.

An Air Force veteran and a pilot, Mr. Wasson flew combat missions in the Vietname War."He was highly decorated. He flew 430 combat missions in an F4 fighter, which he said was the second highest number of anyone during the war," said Mr. Wasson's wife, Cathryn Schlenk Wasson.

Among her husband's decorations were the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal and two Distinguished Flying Crosses, she said.

While some of his associates remained in aviation, Mr. Wasson opted for continuing education. He held degrees in accounting, and in law, the latter of which he obtained by attending the Chase College of Law at night, Mrs. Wasson said.

Mr. Wasson had intended to mostly work in accounting after becoming an attorney 10 years ago, but his legal work grew into a full-time practice, said his wife, who is an accountant.

A native of Morganfield, Ky., Mr. Wasson was a member of Ft. Thomas Masonic Lodge.

He was an outgoing person who made friends easily and was involved with a number of hobbies, Mrs. Wasson said. Earlier he concentrated on genealogy, and in more recent years he collected antique toys, often traveling to conventions and events where models and toys were on display, Mrs. Wasson said.

"I'll remember him as a friend, and for his many services. . . . to his country and to his community as a professional, held in the highest esteem. His death creates a vacuum for those who knew him," said longtime friend Elmer Haas.

Other survivors include sons, Donald Craig Wasson and Christopher Eric Wasson, both of New Albany, Ind.; a daughter, Andrea Lynn Wasson of New Albany, Ind.; stepdaughters, Christine Arvin of Ft. Thomas and Jennifer Arvin McCausey of Ft. Thomas; his mother, Hilda Crowell Wasson of Evanston, Ill.; a brother, Jeffrey Wasson of Evanston; and one grandchild.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials are suggested to Kentucky Historical Society Foundation, Old State Capitol, P.O. Box 1792, Frankfort 40602-1792.
