PAULA RAINES

Dr. Paula Raines, 57, of Salvisa, died Friday, March 20, 2009 at her home.

Born Nov. 27, 1951 in Iowa City, IA, she was the daughter of Dr. Paul A. and Muriel D. Raines of Morehead. Raines was an attorney and psychologist. As an attorney, she served as a trial consultant, a mediator and an administrative hearing officer. As a psychologist, she worked with corporations and non-profits, conducting workshops and coaching clients, and was a specialist in the use of Enneagram in the workplace. Paula was also an artist.

Survivors other than her parents include three sisters, Joan Raines-Phillips of Lawrenceburg, Donna Wallace of Bellingham, MA, and Elise Scully of Lexington; three brothers, Keith Raines of Lawrenceburg, Lloyd Raines of Anchorage, AK, and Craig Raines of Morehead.

The service will be Sunday at her home. Arrangements by Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the ASPCA or your local humane society.

EMMA ROGERS

Emma Margaret Rogers, 82, of 335 Shewmaker Ln., widow of Floyd Milton Rogers and Lee E. Thompson, died Monday, March 23, 2009 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born September 13, 1926 in Frankfort, she was the daughter of the late Charlie C. and Mary Catherine (Brammel) Gill. She was a retired American Bank Stationary supervisor and a member of the West End Church of Christ.

Survivors include one brother, Joe (Nell) Gill of Harrodsburg; a niece, Jennifer (Phillip) Dobbs of Lexington; and a great nephew, Justin Dobbs of Lexington.

The funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Mike Crowe and Andy and Stephanie Wing officiating. Burial will be in the Louisville Memorial Gardens East.

Visitation Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

LESLIE RUE

Leslie “Les” Rue, 85, of Harrodsburg, widower of Letitia Mitchell Rue, died Friday, March 20, 2009 at the Osceola Regional Hospital in Kissimmee, FL.

Born September 8, 1923 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late Insco Williams and Lottie (Forbes) Rue. He was the retired owner of Rue Insurance Agency and was a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church. He attended Centre College and the University of Kentucky and served as a Merchant Seaman during WW II.

Survivors include two daughters, Jane (Andy) Rice of Danville, Tish (Bruce) Rudd of Cadiz; a sister, Aileen Dohler of CO; a brother, Rev. Clarence Rue of TX; three grandsons and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by ten siblings.

The funeral was held Wednesday, March 25 at 11 a.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Tish Rudd officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Bruce Rudd Jr., Billy Hargis Jr., Todd Hargis, Ronnie Reed, Art Baker and Charles Lewis.

VIRGINIA SCHELL

Virginia Rae Logue Schell, 81, of Lawrenceburg, widow of Delmas Schell, died Saturday, March 21, 2009 in Lawrenceburg.

Born August 8, 1927 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Reid and Vivion Dean Logue. She was a member of the Lawrenceburg Community Baptist Church and was active in God’s Basin for many years. In 2003, Schell was Anderson County’s Citizen of the Year and in 2007, she was Anderson County’s Citizen of the Month. She was a retired Texas Instruments employee and a retired apartment manager at Executive East Apartments in Lexington.

Survivors include one daughter, Judy (Norman) Ledford of Paris; three sons, Donnie (Jane) Sims of Lawrenceburg, Larry (Darlene) Sims of Harrodsburg and Gary (Becky) Sims of Salvisa; three sisters, Margaret Sims, Rebecca Kinder and Wanda Kinder, all of Harrodsburg; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Dana Leigh Sims.

Funeral services were Tuesday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with burial in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Donnie Sims, Larry Sims, Gary Sims, Clay Yocum, Brent McGinnis, Cory Sims, Norman Ledford, Steve Hill and Chris Harrod. Curtis Sims, Kenny Sims, Vincent Kinder, Tommy Logue, Miller Horn, Don Horn, Troy Thompson, JoJo Thompson and Rita Hendren served as honorary pallbearers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Anderson County Senior Citizens.

VIRGINIA THOMPSON

Virginia Boblitt Thompson, 65, of Chaplin Road in Willisburg, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at the Regis Woods Health Care Center in Louisville.

A native of Washington County, she was born April 20, 1943 to Robert and Nellie Lewis Boblitt.

She was a member of the Willisburg Church of God of Prophecy, a former employee of Linc’s Restaurant and the former owner and operator of Gin Gin’s Kitchen in Willisburg.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Boblitt on June 20, 1996 and a sister, Wanda Hudson on Feb. 24, 1998.

Survivors include her husband, Glen Thompson; two sons, Tracey (Amy) Thompson and Stacey (Martha McBreen) Thompson; two grandchildren; her mother, Nellie Boblitt, all of Willisburg; two sisters, Pam (Paul) Burkhead of Willisburg and Augustine (Kenny) Carey of Harrodsburg; and two brothers, James Robert (Marlene) Boblitt of Willisburg and Jackie (Tami) Boblitt of Bardstown.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 21 at the Willisburg Church of God of Prophecy with Rev. Steve Puckett, the church pastor, officiating.

Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery at Willisburg.

Pallbearers were Ronnie Bobblett, Greg Simms, Mike Lewis, Ray Dalrymple, Charles Boblitt and David Hardin.

Carey & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MARTHA WILL

Martha Kelly Christian Will, resident of Harrodsburg and Danville, died Thursday, March 19, 2009 at the age of 92.

Ms. Will was born in Tyler, TX, on May 21, 1916, the second daughter of Curtis A. Christian and Beatrice Kelly. She left Texas for the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, in 1936, where she studied violin and fell in love with her theory professor and pianist, Roy Templeton Will, whom she married in 1940. The two lived and taught music at universities all over the United States. Ms. Will was an accomplished violinist and is particularly remembered for her role in the Western Piedmont Symphony in Hickory, NC, where she played for 29 years and was a beloved concertmistress and charter member.

Ms. Will moved to Harrodsburg in December of 2001 to be near her daughters, and though she had lived in more than 30 different places over the years, she found the farms and rolling hills of Kentucky particularly beautiful. From 2005 she was a resident of McDowell Place in Danville, where her crown of white hair, swept up into a French twist, became a familiar sight. She played violin for residents, sang in the choir, and livened up the kitchen with her suggestions for old favorites like fried oysters. She brought a smile to everyone who knew her.

It is an understatement t say that she will be gratly missed by many. She is survived by her daughters Jenna (Lee) Wild of Salvisa and Alise Will of Lexington, formerly of Harrodsburg; a nephew, Hank O’Neal; twelve grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Her family requests that memorials be sent in her name to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY 40504.

Ransdell Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

JOHN WILLOUGHBY

John Willoughby, 69, of 876 Scooter Ave., husband of Mary Ellen Parker Willoughby, died Monday, March 23, 2009 at his home.

Born March 8, 1940 in Bath County, he was the son of the late Clark and Roxie (Ballard) Willoughby. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Bath County Christian Church.

Survivors include five daughters, Ann (David) Hobbs, Debbie Willoughby, Becky (Keith) Wilham, Angie Willoughby and Jeanette (Mike) Rogers, all of Harrodsburg; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Gary Story officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Johnathon Bowles, Ronnie Wilham, Zachery Hicks, Gary Case, Paul Hartman and Ronnie Sims. Honorary bearers are Clark Wilham, Christian Rogers, Jessica Hobbs, Jackie Hobbs, Courtney Hicks, Chrissy Bowles, Summer Rogers and Staci Case.

Visitation Wednesday, March 25 from 5-8 p.m. and prior to the service on Thursday at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel, Harrodsburg.

MARY BEATTY

Mary Speckner Beatty, 84, widow of Joseph A. Beatty, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born March 14, 1925 in Louisville, she was the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Schwartz Speckner. She was a retired Mercer County School food service employee and was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sons, Paul (Angie) Beatty of Harrodsburg and Thomas Brooks Beatty of Nicholasville; one daughter, Lisa (Merle) Hart of Harrodsburg; one sister, Ethel Cooper of Louisville; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, George Speckner and one sister, Mildred Whalen.

The funeral was Friday at the St. Andrew Catholic Church with Father Danny Schwendeman officiating. Paul Beatty, Brooks Beatty, Jay Hart, M. J. Hart, Brandon Hart and Michael Lynch served as pallbearers. Burial was in the St. Nicholas Cemetery.

Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Andrew Building Fund, 1125 Danville Road, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

LILLIAN CHURCH

Lillian Mae Church, 68, wife of Tony Church of Burgin, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Visitation is 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 7 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Burgin Memorial Gardens.

BETTY COLE

Betty "Boo" Coleman Cole, died on February 26 in Norfolk, VA.

Born in Harrodsburg, she was a daughter of the late T. C. Coleman III and Gladys Coleman Taylor.

Betty graduated from UK in 1955 with a BS in Medical Technology, and married Temple Gatewood Cole of Mt. Sterling.

She was preceded in death by Temple in 1979, and her son, Roger, in 1988.

Betty accompanied her husband to his numerous State Department postings including Edmonton, Canada, Paris (where their daughter Nancy was born), Zambia, and Morocco (where their son Roger was born). Following her retirement as director of the lab at ACCESS Emergency Care Center in Reston, VA, she served with the Peace Corps in Jamaica prior to relocating to Virginia Beach in 1996.

Betty is survived by her two daughters, Katie (Peter) Jones of Georgetown, DE and Nancy (David) Harvey of Virginia Beach, VA; seven grandchildren: Andrew (Angela) Jones of Castle Rock, CO, Rebecca Jones of New York City, Nathan Jones of Georgetown, DE, Taylor, Melinda, Hannah and Noah Harvey of Virginia Beach. Additional survivors include a sister, Helen V. Coleman of Harrodsburg, and a brother, T. C. (Betty) Coleman of Thomaston, GA, her nieces Sally McGinty, Fran Mosher, Richie Coleman, Lee Coleman, Gaye Harralu, her nephew Al Ebert.

A memorial service will be held in Harrodsburg on Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m. at the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the United Presbyterian Church, 326 South Main Street, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

MARTHA COLLINS

Martha Frances Collins, 87, Bloomfield, died Friday, March 27, 2009 at her residence.

She was born Feb. 5, 1922, in Salvisa, a self-employed dairy farmer on the Collins Family Farm, enjoyed reading, quilting, crocheting, and was a member of Willing Workers and Cox’s Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include: a daughter, Gerry C. Roby, Bloomfield; two sons, Theodore H. “Teddy” Collins, Bardstown, and Donald Lee Collins, Bloomfield; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Sue Brothers, Bardstown; a brother, Ralph McMurray, Louisville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Collins Sr.; a son, Bobby Lynn Collins; her parents, Roger Irvin and Ethel Mae Campbell McMurray; a brother, Billy McMurray; and a sister, Betty McMurray Manakee.

The funeral was conducted Monday, March 30, at the Barlow Funeral Home, Bardstown, with burial in Bardstown Cemetery. Pastor Jim Bratcher officiated.

Memorial contributions may go to Cox’s Creek Baptist Church Building Fund or Hospice of Nelson County.

Barlow Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
