WAYMAN CUNNINGHAM

A Remembrance to Wayman Bush Cunningham

Wayman Bush Cunningham, son of the late Finley and Elizabeth Cunningham, was born on September 26, 1927 in Salvisa, KY. and departed this life on May 4, 2009.

Wayman Cunningham and Lillian Ali were joined in matrimony on December 22, 1957 at The Church of Divine Paternity in New York City. They enjoyed a loving and mutually supportive marriage. Wayman and Lillian, having no children of their own, opened their home and hearts to their nieces while they were attending college in the Washington area.

Wayman earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Psychology from Howard University. His career at Howard University began at the University Counseling Service where he served as a psychotherapist. In 1968, Wayman joined the faculty of Howard University College of Medicine as an instructor in the Department of Psychiatry. It was there that he earned his reputation as a superb teacher and excellent clinician in both individual and group psychotherapies. Wayman started the Group Psychotherapy Program in the Department where he taught scores of psychiatry residents and psychology interns the theory and practice of group psychotherapy. Wayman was sought out as a supervisor by clinicians treating patients in group psychotherapy because of his expertise in that treatment modality. He helped to establish the American Psychological Association (APA) accredited Doctoral Psychology Internship Program at Howard University Hospital in 1980, the first APA accredited program of its kind at a historically black college or university. Wayman retired from Howard University College of Medicine in 1992 as an Assistant Professor. He continued to supervise residents and interns as a member of the volunteer faculty and maintained a private practice, following retirement from the College of Medicine, until 2002. In addition to his work at Howard University, Wayman served in and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army (1950-1952) and was a consultant to Goodwill Industries and to the Peace Corps.

Wayman was an avid golfer and introduced the sport to many of his friends and colleagues. In addition to golfing, he enjoyed investing in the stock market.

Wayman will be lovingly remembered by Lillian, his devoted wife of 51 years, nieces, great nephews, other relatives and many friends and colleagues. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Mary Finnel and Florence and his one brother, William Hade.

I first met Wayman in 1980, when I was a second year resident in Psychiatry and Wayman was my supervisor for group psychotherapy sessions held on the inpatient unit. Wayman had a passion for teaching residents, interns and medical students about the techniques of working with patients in a group to promote their recovery from illness. He gave constructive feedback and I always left the supervision sessions impressed with how generous and enthusiastic he was to share his knowledge and insights with me.

Wayman was a colleague and close friend to me after I was hired by the Department of Psychiatry following completion of my residency. He continued to educate me on how to develop a practice, negotiate office politics and gave valuable advice on career development. As a friend, he shared with me his secrets about investing, gave me stock tips and even referred me to his stock broker. One of the real highlights of our friendship was going to the Annual Auto Show in December. Wayman loved cars and going to the show was truly something that both of us looked forward to doing. Wayman, my two children and I would leisurely walk the floor, sit in the Jaguars, Mercedes, Cadillacs, and Lexuses and touch the Rolls Royces, Lamborghines and Bentleys. He also loved to talk about and play golf. He offered to teach me but I never got around to taking him up on the offer. As his illness progressed and he was unable to attend the car shows or play golf, we often talked about cars and watched golf tournaments on televisions, especially when Tiger Woods was playing, during my visits.

Wayman was a fighter. He showed tremendous determination and courage in his battle against Parkinson’s disease. He learned all that he could about the illness and had consultations with experts around the country about available treatments.

Lillian, you were a steadfast ally and a loving/devoted wife and life partner to Wayman as demonstrated by your patience, understanding, encouragement and care for him throughout his illness. Lillian you are in my thoughts and prayers and if there is anything that I can do for you in the days ahead, please contact me.

Wayman was my teacher, colleague and a valued and trusted friend. Wayman I will miss you dearly.

Walter P. Bland, M.D.
