DEBORA BROOKS

Woman's death is investigated

The death of Debora Kay Brooks, 43, who was found dead at her home at 206 Belmont Court last week, is being investigated by Harrodsburg Police.

"The death was suspicious and we're investigating it," said Harrodsburg Lt. Garry Bradshaw.

Brooks daughter, Megan Brooks, of the same address, found her mother dead and called 911, Bradshaw said.

The exact time of Brooks’ death is unknown, though her official pronounced time of death is 4:48 a.m. Wednesday, May 20.

Mercer County Coroner Sonny Ransdell said the cause of death is pending a complete autopsy report. “We just want to be certain we have an accurate cause and manner of death. We don’t want to speculate,” said Ransdell.

No details of Brooks’ death have been released by police officials.

A native of Peru, IN, Brooks was an employee of Charleston Health Care in Danville and Walmart in Harrodsburg. She was a member of Southern Heights Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Megan Brooks of Harrodsburg; a granddaughter, Kaylee Gregory of Harrodsburg and two sisters, Judy (Tony) Walls of Florida and Mary (Donnie) Pulliam of Harrodsburg.

MONICA COFFMAN

Monica Brigitte Coffman, 43, of 2449 Enchanted Forest Ln., Virginia Beach, VA died Sunday, May 17, 2009 in Virginia Beach, VA.

Born March 17, 1966 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of Marshall B. (Junior) and Dixie (Lyons) Mobley Jr. She was a Nothrup Gruman electronic tech. and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, survivors include her husband, William T. “Bill” Coffman; one daughter, Samantha Coffman of Virginia Beach, VA; two sisters, Marsha Mobley of TX and Meghan Mobley of Harrodsburg; and two brothers, Mark Mobley of NC and Mathew Mobley of ND.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m., Friday, May 22 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with James Harley officiating.

Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital.

PATSY DUNCAN

Patsy Ann Roberts Duncan, 65, of Lawrenceburg died Monday, May 25, 2009 at her residence.

She was born June 25, 1943 in Georgetown to the late Harold Tate and Clara Belle Knight Roberts.

She was an employee of YH America in Versailles, a graduate of Scott County High School and a member of Great Crossings Baptist Church.

She is survived by: her husband of 18 years, Charles T. Duncan Jr., four children, Wes (Vicki) Herald of Georgetown, Tim Herald of Booneville, Marsha Doss of Lawrenceburg, and Charlie (Jan) Duncan III of Salvisa; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris Jean Ward of Georgetown; and a brother, John (Pat) Roberts of Versailles.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers.

Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 28, at the chapel of Lawrenceburg Cemetery with the Rev. Kristopher Billiter officiating.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the National Kidney Foundation, 250 E. Liberty Street, Suite 710, Louisville, KY 40202-1537.

ELLA FRIEND

Ella Deloris Lewis Friend, 73, of Lancaster, widow of Hubert John Friend, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at the Christian Care Center.

Born Jan. 6, 1936 in Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Harry Lewis and Freda Hiatt Lewis Hisle and stepdaughter of the late Claude Hisle Sr.

She attended Hyattsville Baptist Church, serving as a children’s Sunday School Teacher for over 20 years, and was a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class. Friend worked at Cowden’s Manufacturing for over 30 years and seven years at Bill’s Diner.

Friend is survived by one son, Johnny Dale (Joyce) Friend of Lancaster; two daughters, Anita Rose of Corbin and Debra Ann Patterson of Danville; two half-brothers, Claude (Carolyn) Hisle Jr. of Irvine and Roy Hisle of Lake City, FL; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren

In addition to her husband, parents and stepfather, Friend was preceded in death by one half-brother, Billy Joe Hisle; and two sisters, Marthie Hoskins and Mary Etta Oliver.

An Appreciation of Life service was held 11 a.m. Monday, May 25 at Ramsey Funeral Home with Bro. John Penick and Bro. Michael York officiating. Burial followed in Lancaster Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were John David Friend, Matthew Patterson, Gil Lay, Rusty Sebastian, Sam Watkins and Shane Kretzer. Honorary Pallbearers were the Ruth Sunday School Class at Hyattsville Baptist Church and Bill Rhodus and all the employees at Bill’s Diner.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Hyattsville Baptist Church Building Fund or Heritage Hospice.

Ramsey Funeral Home in Lancaster was in charge of the arrangements.

ALLEN HACKETT

Allen Hackett, 83, husband of the late Juanita H. Hackett, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. He was a resident of Thomson Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore.

Born July 28, 1925, he was the son of the late John and Mae Steele Hackett. He was a graduate of Frankfort High School, a member of First Baptist Church and a retired federal government employee. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and was a member and past commander of VFW Post 4075.

He is survived by two sons, John (Brenda) Hackett of Frankfort and Jay (Karen) Hackett of Salvisa; two grandchildren, Abigail and Taylor Hackett, both of Frankfort.

His service was 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 23 at Harrod Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Ted Wigglesworth officiating. Burial followed in Frankfort Cemetery with military Honors conducted by members of VFW Post 4075.

Pallbearers were Eric Butler, Joe Manning, Gary Arnold, Jim Hippe, Ronnie Amburgey and Pete Tropoulos.

Harrod Brothers Funeral Home LLC was in charge of arrangements.

PAM HARMON

Pam Harmon, 59, of Danville, passed away Friday, May 22, 2009 at her residence.

Born Monday, May 23, 1949 in Lake Tahoe, CA, she was a daughter of the late Edward C. and Dorothy M. Cheek Garrett.

She was a data processor at Farmer’s National Bank. Pam was a Methodist and a member of Beta Sigma Phi.

Survivors include: her husband, William “Bill” Harmon of Danville; one son, Clint (Shea) Harmon of Harrodsburg; two daughters, Holly and Stephanie Harmon both of Danville; one sister, Pat (J. R.) Wilson of Pulaski, TN; and granddaughter, Avery Harmon of Harrodsburg.

An Appreciation of Life service was held Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at the Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home in Danville with Bro. Matthew Robbins officiating. Burial was in Bellevue Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Chris Gorley, Collins Polk, Tommy Harmon, J. R. and David Wilson, John Bowles and Tommy Simpson.

Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Aruna Arekapudi, Dr. Finley Hendrickson, Dr. John Lacy, Dr. Charles Papp, Kelly Emerson, Jessie Cocanougher and Debbie Walls.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

CECIL HARRIS

Cecil Eugene Harris, 33, of Holladay Drive, Danville, formerly of Shelby Valley in Pike County, died May 17 in Danville.

Born Oct. 2, 1975, he was the son of Sharon Harris of Louisville and the late Bobby Ray Harris.

He was retired from the U.S. military.

Other survivors include: his wife, Colleen Mosley Harris of Gravel Switch; an infant daughter, Margaret "Maggie" Harris of Gravel Switch; a stepson, William Gabriel "Gabe" Bartley of Harrodsburg; two brothers, Mitch Harris of Waddy and Christopher Harris of Miami Beach, FL; and nephews, Payton and Ethan.

Services were held May 21 in Collins, Ky. Burial was in the Riddle Family Cemetery.

Hall & Jones Funeral Home, Virgie, was in charge of arrangements.

KENNETH JONES

Alfred Kenneth Jones, 70, of Perryville and husband of Imelda Mattingly Jones died Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at his residence.

Born May 29, 1938 in Boyle County, he was a son of the late Alfred Lee and Martha Bottoms Jones.

Jones was a member of Perryville Baptist Church where he was an ordained deacon and trustee. He attended Beech Grove Baptist Church and was a former captain of the Perryville rescue squad.

Jones worked at Corning Glass/Phillips Lighting for 41 years where he was Glassworkers Union vice president for several years. He worked with Alfred Jones and Sons Carpentry, Wilkerson and Gray construction and was also a farmer.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Sheila D. Zeman and Gerald K. Jones, both of Perryville and Tina L. (Mark) Wilkerson of Mackville; a sister, Ruth Ann (Robert) of Southerland, TN; Warren Lee (Sue) Jones of Danville and James Edward (Sherry) Jones of Perryville; four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Lindsey Zeman.

The funeral was 11 a.m. Friday, May 22 at Perryville Baptist Church with the Revs. Ben Edwards and Bobby Estes officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Steve Wright, Joey Harris, Jimmy Duncan, Donald Westerfield, Jerry Brummett, James Cress, Mickey Harmon and Donnie Leonard.

Honorary pallbearers were Charles Yankey, David Reynolds, Jimmy Overstreet, Bruce Helm, Godbey Dean and Bobby Roney, Billy Edwards, William Graves, Norman Turner, James Bottoms, Ted and Laddie Garrison, Maurice Hundley, Bob Teater, Jerry Pollard, Rudy Hall, Larry Cannon and Jim Edminston.

Expressions of sympathy are suggested to Boyle County Senior Citizens Center, Heritage Hospice Inc. and Alzheimer's Association.

Wilder Funeral Home, Perryville was in charge of arrangements.

JOHN MACHAL

John Machal, 74, of Harrodsburg, husband of Roberta Phillips Machal, died Friday, May 22 at the Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born November 21, 1934 in Rockcastle County, he was the son of the late J.G. and Sarah Cox Machal. He was manager of Kentucky Finance for approximately 30 years and was a partner in the Machal Tax Service for 30 years. He was a member of the Carpenter’s Christian Church, the new Beginnings Sunday School Class, the Spirit Lifters and was a Kentucky Colonel.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters, Teri Giles and Chrisi (David) Burton, both of Harrodsburg, Judy Curtis of Midway, Cindy (Randy) LeMay of Lexington; one sister, Virginia “Sis” Machal of Mt. Vernon; three brothers, Bobby (Betty) Machal of Mt. Vernon, Paul Ray (Kathleen) Machal of Harrodsburg, Chock (Joyce) Machal of Mt. Vernon; eleven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Steve Machal.

The funeral was conducted 1 p.m., Monday, May 25, at the Carpenter’s Christian Church with Greg Warren and Rob Clark officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were his grandsons. Honorary bearers were Bob and Brenda Brown, Delmer and Phyllis Warren, Curtis and Dianne Sims and Bill and Alice Montgomery.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Carpenter’s Christian Church.

JACKIE MCCARTER

Jackie Davis McCarter, 58, of Junction City died Tuesday, May 26, 2009.

Born Aug. 28, 1950, in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Roscoe and Mary Louise Dean Davis.

A graduate of Ansbach High School, Germany, she was a homemaker and former manager of B&L Florist. Jackie was a member of the ladies auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Amvets and Veterans of Foreign Wars. She had been active in the Army Wives Club and volunteered with the American Diabetes. Association. She was a member of Shelby Baptist Church.

Survivors include: her husband, Dan McCarter; two daughters, Lisa McCarter Peyton and Dana McCarter (Troy) Johnson, both of Junction City; two sisters, Dorothy Case and Jeanie (Wendell) Jessee, both of Junction City; three brothers, R. C. Davis of Junction City, John T. (Shirley) Davis of Lexington and Jim (Teresa) Davis of Harrodsburg; five grandchildren, Brittany Wash, Katie Wash, Ashley Peyton, Mitzi Johnson and Maegan Johnson; and one great-grandchild, Maci Lynn Pass.

She was predeceased by a sister, Betty Rogers, and a son, Christopher Daniel McCarter.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Stith Funeral Home, Junction City, with the Rev. Paul McFarland officiating.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Friday.

The family requests memorials be sent to the American Diabetes. Association.
