ANTHONY WOODARD

Anthony D. Woodard, 25, of 202 W. Mill St., Burgin, died Sunday, June 14, 2009.

Born August 11, 1983 in Danville, he was the son of Jeff (Ann) Woodard of Lancaster and Robin (David) Griffith Bennett of Harrodsburg. He was a heavy equipment operator for Claunch Construction Co. and was a member of the American Kennel Club.

In addition to his parents, survivors include two sons, Brody Anthony Woodard and Jordan Barnett; a daughter, Shelby Barnett; a fiancé, Tamica Barnett of Burgin; two sisters, Sheila Burkhart of Lincoln County and Diana Bennett of Harrodsburg; one brother, David (Kelli) Woodard of Harrodsburg; maternal grandfather, Jimmy Denny; paternal grandmother, Geneva Woodard of Lancaster and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by a paternal grandfather, William Robert Woodard and maternal grandmother, Mallie Denny.

The funeral was conducted 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 17 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Harold Best officiating. Burial was in the Burgin Memorial Garden.

Pallbearers were Marshall Todd, Larry Sims, Jarrod Conn, Drew Sallee, Daniel Derringer and Tommy Little. Honorary bearers were Patrick Bugg, Jeremy Brumfield, Russell Denny, Joe Denny and J. R. Marlow.

ANTHONY WOODARD

Man dies in tree trimming accident

A 25-year-old Burgin man, Anthony D. Woodard, died Sunday afternoon when a falling tree he and Jared Conn were attempting to cut fell on Woodard.

The accident happened on the property of Dr. B.A. Spoonamore at 756 Mallard Cove.

Mercer County Deputy Sheriff Marty Gray said Woodard and Conn had contracted to cut down the tree. He said Conn was in a pickup truck which had a chain on it, and Woodard was sawing the tree when it fell the wrong way and crushed him.

Mercer EMS was called to the scene about 1:56 p.m. and the Burgin Rescue Squad also responded. Woodard was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:55 pm. By Mercer Deputy Coroner Scott Moseley. The cause of death was listed as multiple blunt trauma to the head and torso. Deputy Coroner Chuck Bugg also responded to the scene.

Woodard, of 202 W. Mill St., Burgin, was a heavy equipment operator for Claunch Construction company. He was an avid hunter and a member of the American Kennel Club.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sons, Brody Anthony Woodard and Jordan Barnett; a daughter, Shelby Barnett; a fiancé, Tamica Barnett of Burgin and other relatives.

GLADYS ANDERSON

Gladys W. Anderson, 86, of Harrodsburg died Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born February 27, 1923 in Williamsburg, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Nora Shepherd Wilson. She was a retired operating room technician at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Lexington and also worked at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill for several years.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra (Bob) McKinley of Lexington; two sons, Gary (Darlene) Anderson of Lexington and Steve (Donna) Anderson of Harrodsburg; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Cecelia Ann Andersen and a sister, Helen Clark.

Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 20 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Mark Williams and Greg Warren officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mike Anderson, Nathan Anderson, Jay Anderson, Cody Anderson, Bobby McKinley, Jared Wilcox and Mike Wiley. Honorary pallbearers were Amy Wilcox, Ashley Lancaster, Angie Sudduth and Tammy Wellman.

NEFF CLARK

Neff Clark, 83, of Frankfort, widower of Mary Katherine Clark, died Thursday, June 18, 2009 at St. Joseph Hospice Care Center in Lexington.

Born July 10, 1925, he was a native of Boyle County and was the son of the late Neff and Bertie Jones Clark. He was retired from Sylvania in Versailles and was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during WWII. He was a member of East Frankfort Baptist Church.

He is survived by his sons, Jerry Clark and Clay Neff Clark, both of Frankfort; three daughters, Mary Lee Clark Welch of Eminence, Rita Ann Clark Quire of Frankfort and Betty Jean Phennegar of Kansas; one brother, Charles Clark of Lawrenceburg; one sister, Nell VanMeter of Versailles; eleven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Clark was predeceased by four sisters, Lois Breshear, Betty Yeaste, Flonnie Cole and Blanche Jacobs and two brothers, Richard Clark and Thomas Clark.

Services were conducted Monday, June 22 at 10:30 a.m. at Harrod Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Perkins officiating. Burial followed in the Frankfort Cemetery. military Honors were observed at the graveside by VFW Post 4075.

Pallbearers were Steve Clark, John Clark, Chris Clark, Sam Clark, Anthony Presley and Robert Presley. Honorary bearers were Tom Clark, Donna Hughes, Amanda Clark and Joshua Clark.

LAFON DARLAND

Lafon Darland, 93, of Harrodsburg, widower of DeEtte Sims Darland, died Friday, June 19, 2009 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born January 19, 1916 in McClean, IL, he was the son of the late John W. and Bertha Robinson Darland. He was a retired television repairman and farmer. He was a member of the Lionel Train Collectors Club and Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Doyle Sims (Kim) Darland of Harrodsburg; one “adopted” son, Willard (Ethel) Hamm of Harrodsburg; one sister, Stacy Batts of Knoxville, TN; two grandsons, one “adopted” granddaughter and four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sons, Gerald Dale Darland and J. W. Darland; one brother, W. H. Darland and one sister, Ladine Sheperson.

Services were conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 23 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Kenny Queener and Bro. Fred Knickerbocker officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbeaerers were Willard Hamm, Joe Harlow, Tim Darland, Chris Darland, Mike Matherly, J. L. Walker and Milward Dedman.

JUANITA HALEY

Juanita Haley, 89, of Lawrenceburg, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2009.

She was born February 1, 1920 in Harrodsburg, the daughter of the late Claude and Dessie Gritton Edwards.

She is survived by her daughter, Jackie Estes. Services will be planned at a later date.

Contributions may be made in her memory to: Hospice of the Bluegrass, 208 Steele St. Frankfort, KY 40601.

Care Cremation Services, Lexington, is in charge of arrangements.

EMMA LAY

Emma R. Lay, 81, of Danville, wife of John P. Lay, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born December 24, 1927 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Delbert and Reva (Stratton) Robinson. She was an office manager at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Danville.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Rebecca (Michael) Green of Burgin and Susan Southworth of Danville; one son, John David (Karen) Lay of Canton, GA; two sisters, Doris Sims of Danville and Frances (Rutledge) McClure of Prospect; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Lay was predeceased by a brother, Thomas E. “Buddy” Robinson and a sister, Hilda Sims.

Funeral services were Friday, June 19 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Tim Mathis and John David Lay officiating. Burial was in the Bethel Baptist Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mike Green, Paul Green, Justin and Lance Southworth, Brennan Boswell and Richard Lough. Honorary Bearers were the Philathea Sunday School class members, Mark Harris, Dottie Sims, Bob and Jane Williams, Buddy and Mary Lee Furr, Martha Lough, Tom Houchins and Alberta Wood.

Memorial contributions may be sent to First Baptist Church in Danville or Gideon Bible Fund. The Ransdell Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements. .

KENNETH OWENS

Kenneth Neal Owens, 54 of Nicholasville, died Friday, June 19, 2009 at his home.

Born April 2, 1955 in Lexington, he was the son of the late Cornelius and Beatrice “Bea” (Cosby) Owens Ransdell. He served in the U.S. Army and was a truck driver for R & T.

Survivors include his brother, Tex (JoAnn) Cosby of Nicholasville and stepfather, Ralph Ransdell of Salvisa.

Graveside services were conducted at 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 23 at the Spring Hill Cemetery with Dan Barnes officiating.

RUBY RILEY

Ruby Jean Savage Riley, 70, of Mt. Washington died June 12, 2009 at Baptist East Hospital in Louiville.

Born March 6, 1939 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late William Bill and Effie Savage.

Survivors include her husband, Earl Riley; one son, Jeffery Riley; three brothers, Thomas Savage, Wayne Savage and Gale Savage; four sisters, Rosie Smith, Margaret Sims, Wanda Godbey and Wilma Stratton and four grandchildren.

Services were Monday, June 15 at 1 p.m. at Greenwell-Jenkins-Houghlin Funeral Home in Taylorsville with Bro. Joe Vires officiating. Burial was in the Taylorsville Valley Cemetery.

Pallbearers were William Richardson, Ricky Savage, Terry Godbey, Joseph Savage, Ronnie Sims and Michael Savage.

Honorary Pallbearers were Thomas, Wayne and Gale Savage.

MARTHA ROYALTY

Martha Royalty, 90, of Lexington Rd., Harrodsburg, died Monday, June 22, 2009 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born September 28, 1918 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Effie Lee (Goff) Cheatham. She was a retired Cricketeer Mfg. Co. press operator and a member of the Eller’s Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sisters, Margaret Long of Harrodsburg, Louise Carrier of Deland, FL and Bonnie Shearer of Frankfort; a granddaughter, Ann Marie Royalty.

She was preceded in death by a son, David Royalty.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 25 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Kenneth Whitehouse officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Her nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 24 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

WILMA SMITH

Wilma H. Smith, 82, of Harrodsburg died Sunday, June 21, 2009 at the Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born November 18, 1926 in Louisville, she was the daughter of the late Ben E. and Elizabeth (Fenley) Henderman.

Smith had worked as a cost accountant for National Distilleries, a procedures auditor for American Mutual and had also run a yarn store. Smith was one of the first women to achieve the One Million Mile Club for Delta Airlines. She was a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church, regularly participating at the Men’s Bakery Auction.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda (Steven) Oglesby of Harrodsburg and a brother, David (Beth) Henderman of Louisville.

Services were conducted at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 23 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Mark Thompson officiating. A graveside service in Louisville was conducted in the Jeffersontown Cemetery on Billtown Road at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 24.

Pallbearers were Jim Hogue, Bill Brinkley, Cindy Gilkison, Kyle Henderman, Joseph Treadway and David Henderman.
