HELENE PRESTON

Helene Preston, 87, of Harrodsburg, formerly of Junction City, wife of Claude R. Preston Sr. of Junction City, died Monday, July 20, 2009 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born June 14, 1922 in Thompson, ME, she was the daughter of the late Owen and Eva (Cromwell) Leavitt. She was a housewife and a member of the Protestant faith.

In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, Claude “Joe” (Ann) Preston Jr. of Harrodsburg; two daughters, Lucille Benoit of Minnesota and Diane Carey of Junction City; two sisters, Elizabeth Waters of Maine and Leona Brodwick of Arizona; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services and interment will be in the Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville at 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 24. There will be no visitation.

Sims Funeral Services of Harrodsburg is in charge of arrangements.

RUSSELL THRASHER

Russell Douglas Thrasher, 33, died July 15, 2009 at his residence.

Born May 15, 1976 in Columbus, GA., he was a son of Sherryl Thrasher of Temple, TX and Roy Duffy Thrasher, Sr. of Core, WV.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by: two brothers, Roy Duffy Thrasher, Jr. of WV and Wesley Thrasher of TX; one sister, Jenna T. Ward of TX; and his companion, Tab Farthing of Harrodsburg.

A memorial service will be held in TX at a later date.

Stith Funeral home, Danville, is in charge of local arrangements.

H. B. EDWARDS

H. B. Edwards, 83, of Cottage Grove, MN, died Saturday, July 18, 2009 at his home.

Born Sept. 1, 1925 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Beatty Edwards and Maggie Hager Edwards Isham, and was the husband of Norma Bradshaw Edwards.

He was a WWII Navy veteran and a retired engineer.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Dan (Barbara) Edwards of Eagon, MN and Scott Edwards of Long Beach, CA; one daughter, Debby Ford of Orlando, FL; one brother, Sam (Margaret) Edwards of Harrodsburg and one grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one brother, George Edwards.

A memorial service will be held in Lexington at a later date.

MARY GRAHAM

Mary J. Wilburn Graham, 71, of Cincinnati, OH died Friday, July 24, 2009.

Born June 6, 1938 in Mitchellsburg, she was the daughter of the late Dewey and Ella Chambers Wilburn. She was the widow of the late Lewis Edward Graham.

She is survived by three children, Phyllis J. (Herbert) Boone, Terry L. Becker and James E. (Tracy) Graham, all of Cincinnati, OH; one brother, James (Helen) Wilburn of Junction City; three sisters, Opal (Buford) Neikirk of Stanford, Evelyn (Jewel) Devine and Cindy Sims, both of Harrodsburg; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Frances Peterson and two brothers, Leon and William Wilburn.

An Appreciation of Life service is at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 30 at Ramsey Funeral Home in Lancaster with Bro. J. R. Field officiating. Burial will follow in Lancaster Cemetery.

Visitation will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 30 until service time.

VILAS GRAHAM

Vilas Irvin Graham, 90, Beaumont Avenue, husband of Una Lee Mayes Graham, died Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at his home.

Born January 13, 1919 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Arthur Lee and Bertha Lee (Royalty) Graham. He was an Air Force veteran of WWII and was former co-owner of Harrodsburg Candy and Tobacco. He was a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church, American Legion Post 52, a former member of the Lion’s Club and a past Mason.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Pamela Kay (David) Carpenter of Frankfort and Cathy Lee (Danny) Mobley of Harrodsburg; one son, James Arthur (Lisa) Graham of Harrodsburg; one brother, Truman Graham of Danville; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by nine brothers and two sisters.

Services will be conducted 2 p.m., Friday, July 31 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Mark Thompson and Phil Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery with military rites.

Pallbearers will be Michael Mobley, Chris Renaud, Eric Stone, Casey Lawson, Bobby Walden and Leland Graham.

Visitation is Thursday, July 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. and after 7:30 a.m. Friday at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Foundation Fund, Harrodsburg Christian Church.

military RITES

military Rites for Vilas Graham were conducted at Springhill Cemetery by Douglas Law Post #52, American Legion, Post #6935, VFW and DAV Post #54 July 31.

Those attending were SSGT Jason Stankiewicz, Air National Guard, and SRA Tatiana Collins, 123rd Airlift Wing in Louisville.

Also attending were Allan Teele, Curtis Sherrow, Buddy Howells, Joe Harlow, Jim Stinnett, Floyd Shirley, James Tewmey and David Best, bugler.

NAOMI KENDALL

Naomi Jean Bradshaw Kendall, 77, of Georgetown, widow of Jim Kendall, died Sat at the Dover Manor Nursing Home.

A native of Lexington, she was the daughter of the late Howard O. and Sina Mae Hunter Bradshaw.

She was retired from the St. Joseph Hospital where she worked as a nursing assistant.

Survivors include: four children, Hiram E. "Eddie" (Karen) Marshall, Nicholasville, Howard J. (Karen) Marshall, Georgetown, Sheila (Joseph) Mefford, Georgetown and Ronnie W. (Sondra) Marshall, Harrodsburg; a stepdaughter, Billie Parker, Lexington; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home - Main Street, Lexington. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 12 p.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be John Goble McDonald, Roy Michael Marshall, Robert Shearer, Justin Marshall, Olin S. Mefford, and Joseph W. Mefford, II.

CATHERINE MATHERLY

Catherine Matherly, 88, of Jeffersontown and formerly of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, July 18, 2009.

She was the former Catherine Votaw. She was a retired seamstress from Ray Anderson Dry Cleaners and Hannah's Cleaners. She was a member of the Jeffersontown Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Tommy) Ruckriegel and Rhonda (Dennis) Smith; three sons, Joseph, Mark (Karen) and Jeffrey Matherly, all of Louisville; a brother, Don Votaw of Anderson County and a sister, Margaret Ann Proctor of Harrodsburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie G. Matherly; three brothers, Hershel, Jake and Holly Votaw; and a granddaughter, Lesley.

The funeral was Wednesday, July 22 at Foreman's, 10600 Taylorsville Road, Jeffersontown. Burial was in Resthaven Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Association.

LENA MCKINNEY

Lena Stewart Drury McKinney, 67, of Lexington, died Thursday, July 23, 2009 at the Pattie A. Clay Medical Center in Richmond.

She was born in Mercer County to the late Mary Kate Stewart Monroe.

She was a retired waitress and a member of the Pentecostal Church in Lexington.

She is survived by: one daughter, Sherrie Lynn Drury Scenters; one son, David G. (Phyllis Gregory) Drury, all of Lexington; three grandchildren, David “Ryan” Drury, Richmond, Seth W. (Ashley) Drury, Nicholasville, and Michaela S. Ball, Lexington; two great-grandchildren, Haley Alexis Drury, Richmond, and Caden Daniel Drury, Nicholasville; one brother, Herbert Ray “Jack” (Phyllis) Stewart, Mt. Washington .

She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Kyleigh Ashtyn Drury.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 27, at the Gash Memorial Chapel with Bro. Tommy Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Ebenezer Cemetery in Mercer County.

Casketbearers were Seth Drury, Harold Ingram, Lee Brewer, Josh Wilson, Patrick Gaines, Jason Stewart, Stevie Stewart and Tony Stewart.

BETTY MOORE

Betty D. Moore, 73, of Harrodsburg, widow of Robert Henry Moore, died Monday, July 27, 2009 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born April 18, 1936 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Barnett and Opal Bottoms Settles. She was a homemaker and a member of the Battle Baptist Church.

She is survived by one son, Robert A. (Tina) Moore of Lebanon; three brothers, Randall (Charlotte) Settles and Mike Settles, both of Harrodsburg and Barnett (Jo Anna) Settles of Danville and two sisters, Linda (Kenneth) Proctor of Harrodsburg and Faye (Danny) Adkins of McAfee; several nieces and nephews.

Services are 1 p.m. Thursday, July 30 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Bobby Logue officiating. Burial is in the Ebenezer Church of Christ Cemetery. Pallbearers are Mike Settles, Mark Settles, Billy Holiday, Dennis Holiday, Jimmy Holiday and Jerry Holiday.

Visitation 5–8 p.m. Wednesday and after 7 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

DAVID PATTERSON

David H. Patterson, age 72, of Harrodsburg, died Sunday at his home with Patricia Ann Donovan Patterson, affectionately referred to as “P.A.,” his loving wife of 51 years, by his side.

Born February 10, 1937 in McAfee, KY, he was the son of Vera Mae (Kurtz) Patterson, Harrodsburg, and the late David Houston Patterson.

He was a retired US Army Reserve Lt. Colonel having served for over 30 years, and was a retired KY State Police Captain. During his 30 years with the KSP, David had served as state-wide Communications Network Commander, Public Information Officer for Post 7, Asst. Post Commander of Pikeville Post 9, and had headed the Organized Crime Unit for a number of years. During his career in the Army Reserves, he had served as Company Commander, Division Provost Marshall, and Battalion Commander. He was a member of the St. Andrew Catholic Church, and had been a member of the Harrodsburg and Frankfort Kiwanis Club. He was a KY Colonel. David was known by his family as “Pop” and had a great love for his family. In their retirement, David and Pat enjoyed farming, camping, fishing, gardening, woodworking, and traveling.

Survivors other than his wife and mother include: four daughters, Cindy (Joe) Wilson, Becky (Keith) Horn, Pamela (Jimmy) Drakeford, and Jessica (Mike) Elliott-Harmon, all of Harrodsburg, KY; one son, David (Cheryl) Patterson of Harrogate, TN; one sister, Patricia Gayle Clarke of Cecelia, KY; one brother, James Edward Patterson of Mercer Co., KY; twelve grandchildren, Joe (Sonya) Wilson, Dustin (Carey) Wilson, Josh Wilson, Kaitlin & Amber Patterson, Tyler, Kendra & Jillian Horn, Jimmy (Kristy) Drakeford, Haley and Austin Elliott, and Dowell Harmon; seven great grandchildren, Joseph Humphrey, Kaden, Carter, & Landen Wilson, Kaelin, Anna, and Ashton Drakeford. He was preceded in death by a sister, Laura Ann Patterson.

His thought on religion: “Faith is to the soul as the sun is to stain glass windows.”

Pop, you will be missed as a loving husband, son, brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, July 30, 2009 at the St. Andrew Catholic Church by Father Danny Schwendeman, Peter Joseph, Father Frank Osburg and Father Amal.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and members of the KSP will serve as honorary bearers.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Church.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, St. Andrew Catholic Church Building Fund, or Heritage Hospice.

Ransdell Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
