ROBERT MARTIN

Community leader and friend

WHBN's Bob Martin dies

The Mercer County community lost one of its icons with the death of Robert L. "Bob" Martin last Saturday.

Martin, 75, wore many hats, but was probably best known for his daily news broadcast on WHBN Radio Station (1420 AM) for many years.

Martin purchased WHBN in 1960 and managed it until he sold it in the late 1990s, but selling the station didn’t mean martin left it behind. He continued to get up early and do the morning news broadcast until he had surgery on April 20 this year.

While the surgery itself was a success, martin’s health worsened, and he remained hospitalized until about two weeks ago.

Also known for his musical abilities (Bobby Martin and the Rockin’ Tune Twisters band made their debut radio appearance on WHBN in 1956), as an emcee for many community events, an avid golfer, country music love, horseback rider, Western movie lover and even as Santa Claus, Martin typically had a big smile for everyone and a fondness for teasing others.

He established the Community Love Tree, which continues to provide Christmas gifts to area children, and for many years, he helped deliver the gifts.

“Life was an adventure for Bob, said Nadine Cole White , an 18-year employee at WHBN with Martin. “He loved to talk to people, to find out about them and he loved to tease people – he just loved people,” she said.

“He was late for half the appointments he had because he would stop to talk to everybody,” White remembered.

Jesse Thomas grew up with Martin in Lawrenceburg. “He was five years older than me, and I helped his father and him with a paper route in Lawrenceburg when we were young,” Thomas recalls.

“I used to cut his father’s yard and he and neighbors would be playing the guitar and singing and would do that for hours at a time,” Thomas continued.

He said he and Martin rode a 3-wheel scooter to deliver newspaper. “he would sit in the back and drive and I was on the front and would throw papers onto porches,” Thomas said..

“But, what I admire most – he was a person who loved people and people loved him – I guess he didn’t’ have an enemy. In Harrodsburg, you all called him ‘Bob,” but in Lawrenceburg, we called him ‘Bobby,’” Thomas added.

He also fondly recalls Martin playing Santa. “My oldest daughter came home one day and said, ‘daddy, I met Santa Claus in Harrodsburg and he knows you.’”

Another close friend of Martin’s, Jim Fitzgerald, a retired state police trooper, was one of Main’s golfing buddies and had known him since the 1960s.

“When I was first assigned here, I immediately knew him as an artist, musician and an unorthodox golfer – he did hit cross-handed. We would all meet for breakfast and a lot of times, he would draw our pictures on a napkin. He was a guitar player and singer and would provide the entertainment on golf trips – we were back in the woods an nobody could hear us,” Fitzgerald said.

He said Martin was a great fan of the “Andy Griffith” television show. “We had a lot of conversations about a mountain man on there who would say ‘more power to you sheriff,’ and began using that phrase, ‘more power to you,’ a lot.”

“He had an appetite for food and chewing tobacco; a group of us all went out to eat on Monday and Tuesday nights,” Fitzgerald said about Martin.

“As a radio announcer, he brought a lot of discussions; he was very creative and had Clarence the Rooster – WHBN was one of the first radio stations with a name after an animal. Bob had a sound track like a rooster in there with him,” Fitzgerald said. “He will be missed – he was a good friend – that’s the main thing.”

Martin is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Warner Martin, who worked with him at WHBN.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church.

Martin received many awards for community service and was involved with the Mercer Chamber of Commerce, Inter-County Rural Electric Cooperative, The James B. Haggin Hospital, the Harrodsburg Optimist Club and serve don Harrodsburg’s 1974 Bicentennial Celebration Committee.
