The Mercer County community lost one of its farm enthusiasts and educators with the death of Dr. James A. Jackson Jr. at his Salvisa home Dec. 28. Jackson died from complications of multiple myeloma cancer.

A 1968 graduate of Todd County High School, he served in Vietnam with the U. S. Jackson was also a member and past president of the Mercer County Cattlemen’s Association, served as director on the Kentucky Angus Association board and was a member of the National Angus Association. The Kentucky Angus Association named him and his family the 2006 Angus Family of the Year.

Doris Hamilton, current president of the Mercer Count Cattlemen’s Association, praised Jackson’s service to the organization. “Dr. Jackson has been a member of the Mercer County Cattlemen’s Association board of directors for nearly 10 years. He began his service to the organization as vice president. It was Jack’s enthusiasm for the cattle industry and love for learning and teaching that sparked a revitalization of the organization. Under Dr. Jackson’s direction, the association began administering the cattle genetics cost-share program using Ky Ag Development funds,” Hamilton said.

Jackson served two terms as president of the association and at the time of his death was serving on the board as past president. “We could always count on Jack to motivate the board to seek opportunities for learning and progress. Our organization owes a great deal to Jack and we will be forever grateful for his help and dedication to improving the beef cattle industry. At the 2010 Mercer County Fair Beef Show, we will present a new trophy in Dr. Jackson’s honor, the ‘Jack Jackson Memorial Supreme Champion Female trophy.’ We hope this will be fitting tribute to Jack, so that his memory will live on,” Hamilton said.

Jackson also volunteered as a 4_H leader in Mercer Count for many years and was honored by the Mercer County 4-H Council as the “Mercer County Outstanding 4-H Leader for 2006.” He was also a member and served on the board of the Salvisa Ruritan Club and was a member of Kirkwood Baptist Church.

Dana Anderson, Mercer County Extension Agent for 4-H and Youth Development, noted that Jackson was instrumental in the overall livestock program in Mercer County and made 4-H education a priority. “He provided leadership to our 4-H Council recruitment and development programs. He was a dedicated man in what he believed in and to the programs in which he was involved. I think he will be missed not only in Mercer County, but throughout the state. He was involved in 4-H livestock judging on the state level, and 4-H has been a big part of his and his family’s lives,” Anderson said.

Jackson and his wife Elda, married in July of 1982 and moved to their farm in Salvisa in May of 1984, where they began a purebred Angus cattle operation subsequently named Dividing Ridge Farm. It was Jackson’s wish to be buried on his farm.
