V. W. LAWRENCE

V. W. Lawrence, Jr., 95, widower of Ruth Sizemore Lawrence, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010 at the Taylor Manor Nursing Home in Versailles.

Born Feb. 13, 1914 in Terrell, TX, he was the son of the late V.W. and Rosilia McLemore Lawrence, Sr. He was an electrician and salesman, and a Veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Survivors include his daughter, Rose Marietta Lawrence.

Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 18 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Chaplain Kevin A. Pearce and Chaplain Gary Story officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be in the form of donations to Taylor Manor Nursing Home, 300 Berry Avenue, Versailles, KY 40383 or to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2008 Steele St., Frankfort, KY 40601.

AGNES LOWRY

Agnes Alene Cobb Lowry, 89, widow of Roy Easley Lowry, Logan Lane, Nicholasville, died Wednesday, January 13, 2010 in Harrodsburg.

She was born on January 4, 1921 in Jessamine County the daughter of the late Ernest and Dora Perkins Cobb.

She is survived by: two daughters, Sonya (Esker) Lowry Henry and Darlene C. Lowry Hensley, both of Jessamine County; four grandchildren, Leisa Henry Brumfield, Gina Hensley Caldwell, Jeff A. Lowry and Roy Don Lowry, four great-grandchildren, Jeffrey S. Lowry, Brianna G. Lowry, Taylor L. Caldwell and Ali Dawn Lowry. Additional survivors include a brother, Rice Cobb, and two sisters, Helen Caudill and Ernestine Stinnett.

She was preceded in death by a son, Donnie E. Lowry and several brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held Friday January 15, at theBetts & West Funeral Home in Nicholasville with Bro. Danny Cross officiating and burial in Cobb Cemetery.

ZELLA LYONS

Zella Pauline Lyons, 54, wife of Charles Winston Lyons, died Friday, Jan. 15, 2010 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born April 1, 1955 in Jessamine County, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Dorothy Bottoms Morris. She was retired from Florida Tile and was currently employed at Timberland. She had been a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church.

Besides her husband, survivors include her son, Charles William (Leigh) Lyons of Harrodsburg; two daughters, Sheryl (Terry) Young of Irvine and Sherry (Rusty) Stinnett of Lancaster; three brothers, Bobby Kerns and Buddy Morris, both of Harrodsburg, and Ernie Morris of San Diego, CA; one sister, Pat Hurt of Versailles; one special cousin, Charley Stinnett of Harrodsburg, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by three sisters; Linda Morris, Janie McKenzie, and Deborah Hartley.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 19 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Terry Tench officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery with Austin Lyons, Nicholas Stinnett, Dylan Stinnett, John Blacketer, Bobby Jo Blacketer, Robert Hartley, Jimmy Cross, and Charley Stinnett serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearer was David Lyons.

LILIAN MAYNARD

Lillian T. Maynard, 87, of Harrodsburg, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born June 11, 1922 in North Springfield, PA, she was the daughter of the late Adelbert Calab and Pearl Mae (Swift) Hall. She was a homemaker and a member of the Eller’s Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include: two daughters, Mary Deborah Glenn of Sandy, UT and Norma Mitchell of Darby, MT; two sons, Richard Owen and Paul Owen both of San Diego, CA; two sisters, Evelyn Hays of Harrodsburg and Ruth Tipton of CA; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by James Owen, Charles Hall, Monroe Hall, Alford Hall, Mary Lewis, Ruby Jacoby, Lula Gee and Caroline Barris.

Funeral services were conducted Jan. 19 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Kenneth Whitehouse and Doug Wesley officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Jack Sheperson, Daniel Mattingly, Tyler Isaacs, Chris Miles, Johnny Spears and Jesse Thomas. Honorary Bearers were: Tony Pinkston, Thomas Young, Danny Young, John Spears, Ivan Isaacs and Dr. Leonard Rice.

JOHNNIE SIMPSON

Johnnie C. Simpson, 83, husband of Dorothy Gash Simpson of Harrodsburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010 at the Thomson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore.

Born Oct. 14, 1926 in Mackville, he was the son of the late Taylor and Esther Corn Simpson. He was a graduate of Mackville High School, a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, a lifetime farmer and road construction worker, a former Deacon and Elder at Magnolia Street Christian Church, and a member of the Carpenters Christian Church.

Survivors besides his wife include two daughters: Judy Carol (Roger) Woolums of Wilmore and Esther LuAnn (Steven) Sinkhorn of Danville; one son, William Terrill Simpson of Cornishville; four stepsons, Michael Baxter of Georgia, Gary Lynn Baxter of Tennessee, Steven Baxter and Larry Baxter, both of Mercer County; two sisters, Joyce Peel of Nicholasville and Lettie Mae Royalty of Crestwood. One sister-in-law, Mary Simpson of Lexington; two brothers, Billy Simpson of Harrodsburg and Dwight (Brenda) Simpson of Mackville; three grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, two great grandchildren: a special young friend Zachary, one step great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by a son Johnnie Taylor “Butch” Simpson; his first wife of 45 years, Katherine Key Simpson; one grandchild; two brothers, T.H. and James Donald Simpson and one sister, Catherine Gruner.

Funeral services were conducted Jan. 17, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Greg Warren and Bro. Derek Baker officiating. Burial with military Honors was in Spring Hill Cemetery with Greg Simpson, Jeff Peel, Marshall Taylor Simpson, Larry Wayne Royalty, Justin Peel, and Jimmy Simpson serving as active pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers were Mike Click, Garnett Ruble, Rich Newsome, Dewitt Sims, and Charlie Baker.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Carpenters Christian Church Building Fund, 1340 Hwy 127 Bypass, Harrodsburg, KY 40330 and/or Camp Calvary, 475 Camp Calvary Lane, Mackville, KY 40040.

J. W. SHERROW

J. W. Sherrow, 65, husband of Brenda Bugg Sherrow, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born July 20, 1944 in Danville, he was the son of the late J.W. and Dorothy Middleton Sherrow. He was a truck driver and former Southern Railroad employee.

Additional survivors besides his wife include: two sons, James Troy Sherrow and Michael Brent Sherrow, both of Harrodsburg; one daughter, Gina Sherrow (James) Routin of Hustonville; two sisters, Wanda Land of Lancaster and Betty Harp of Danville; nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Farmer.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. David Collier and Larry Camic officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery with Jon Sherrow, Jim Taylor, James Routin, Eugene Bugg, Buddy Daughterty, Steve Bugg, Steve Harp and Travis Land serving as pallbearers and his McDonald’s Friends serving as honorary pallbearers.

Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 7 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

ROSEMARY SPURLOCK

Rosemary Spurlock, 65, of Salvisa, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

Born Aug. 6, 1944 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late John R. and Rosa Lee (Bottoms) Butler.

She was retired from the Mercer Dress Company and the Haggin Hospital and was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church.

Survivors include: her husband: Jasper Spurlock; a daughter, Lorie Dawn Gowins of Harrodsburg and two sons: Timothy Scott (Krista) Butler of Lincoln County and Paul Douglas Butler of Mercer County; one sister, Joyce Ann Brown of Simpsonville and one brother, Charles Richard “Dick” Butler of Harrodsburg; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Jan. 17 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Bro. James Harley. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Chris Butler, Blake Butler, Josh Butler, Wesley Butler, Cody Gowins and Travis Gowins.

ROSEMARY SPURLOCK

Woman dies in accident

A Salvisa woman died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010 shortly after she suffered injuries in a car accident in Anderson County at 6:22 p.m.

Rosemary B. Spurlock, 65, died at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center after her 1998 Chevy Malibu was struck in the side by a 1999 Toyota Camry driven by Francis R. Downs Jr., 28, of Bardstown.

Kentucky State Police said Spurlock pulled out of a business on U. S. 127 when she was struck. She was extricated by the Anderson Fire/EMS before being flow to UK where she died.

Spurlock was wearing a seat belt.

Downs had no reported injuries alcohol involvement is pending toxicology results.

Spurlock was a retiree of the Mercer Dress Company and the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital and was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Jasper Spurlock, a daughter, two sons and other relatives.

SADIE TATUM

Sadie Lee Tatum, 93, of Burgin, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born May 26, 1916 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Kyle and Effie May (Butler) Sallee and was the widow of Clarence Tatum. She was a homemaker and a member of the Burgin Baptist Church.

Survivors include five daughters: Kathleen ‘Kathy’ Tatum Fain and Martha Ann ‘Mossy’ Johnson, both of Wilmore; Betty J. Tatum and Dorothy “Dot” Lynn Bottom, both of Burgin and Brenda Carol (Harold) Thornton of Harrodsburg; three sons: Roy Allen (Barbara) Tatum of Nicholasville; Vernon Lee (Betty) Tatum and Donald Ray (Donna) Tatum, both of Mercer County; a sister: Grace Sallee (Donald) Steele of Mercer County; 20 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces & nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Robert Elwood ‘Bob’ Tatum; two brothers, Rue and Rodney Sallee and three sisters, Mattie West, Francis Whitehouse and Esther Sallee, and several grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Clifford Neat officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Dewayne Tatum, James Allen Motley, Bobby Caines, Danny Tatum, Bobby Tatum and Chris Baker.

RAY WALKER

Plympton Ray Walker, 52, of Harrodsburg, died Friday, Jan. 15, 2010 at his residence.

Born Jan. 14, 1958 in Mercer County, he was the son of Gladys Coleman Walker of Harrodsburg and the late Plympton Walker. He was a 1977 graduate of Mercer County High School, and a member of the House of Prayer in Versailles.

Survivors other than his mother include: two sons, Ramarr and Ryan Walker, both of Harrodsburg; one daughter Ashley White of Lexington; one brother, Pernell B. Walker of Harrodsburg; four sisters, Martina (Ralph) McKitric of Harrodsburg, Deidri Walker of Lexington, Lorita (Jonathan) Stivers of Bardstown and Tanya Walker, of Harrodsburg; seven grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 19 at St. Peter AME Church with Rev. Everhart Walker, Elder J.D. Short III, Rev. Joe Marshall, Rev. Louis Hugley and Rev. Barry Bowman officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were: Tim Horn, Myron Coleman, Jack Coleman, Lamont Linton, Ronald Taylor, and Ed Stivers. Honorary bearers were: Fred Bottoms, Kenneth Jones, David Yates, John Alvin Goodlett, Tommy Goodlett, and Steven Goodlett.

Sims Funeral Services in Harrodsburg was in charge of arrangements.

FRANCES YOUNG

Frances L. Young, 85, widow of William Amos Young, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Sept. 11, 1924 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Jessie and Edith Brady Robertson. She was a homemaker, and a member of the Deep Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Connie (John) Mink of Harrodsburg; two sons, William (Maureen) Young and Tony (Betty Jo) Young, both of Harrodsburg; one sister, Mae Adkins of Colquitt, GA; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Jan. 20 at the Deep Creek Baptist Church with Bro. Lewis Walter and Bro. Scott Davis officiating. Burial was in Deep Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Chris Young, John Brady Mink, Chad Young, Brad Young, Zac Mink, Brandon Howard, Amy Young, and Michaela Howard serving as pallbearers.

PAULINE BROWN

Pauline Dozier Brown, 85, of Versailles, widow of Arthur Lawrence Brown, died Jan 20, 2010.

Pauline Brown taught school from 1948 until retiring in 1988. She taught at Shakertown and Harrodsburg in Mercer County also at Nonesuch, Simmons and Millville in Woodford County. She was named Teacher of the Year at Millville in 1984 and at Simmons in 1987. She and her husband were members of the Wally Byam Caravan Club for 35 years and held numerous offices. They traveled to every state in the USA, except Alaska. After retirement she wintered at Fort Meyers Beach, FL where she loved living on the beach. Pauline belonged to Versailles Baptist Church.

She is survived by: one son, David Keith (Rungthiwa) Brown; two grandchildren, Jennifer Suwan and Arthur Gavin of Versailles; and one daughter, Nancy Ellen (Jonathan) Martin, and grandson, Wayne Arthur of Glendale, WI.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, a son Anthony Wayne Brown, a granddaughter Elizabeth Lynn Martin, and her brother Emmitt Dozier.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, January 24, at the Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill with Rev. John Brandon officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg.

Pallbearers were nephews Bruce Dozier, Glenn Dozer, Arthur Carroll Brown, Bobby Taylor, Bob Holland and Billy Brown.

Honorary pallbearers were all the boys and girls she taught.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass.
