RALPH ANDERSON

Ralph G. Anderson dies at 86

“Harrodsburg/Mercer County has lost a great benefactor, preservationist and friend,” said Helen Dedman chairman of The James Harrod Trust, about the Saturday death of local philanthropist and Mercer native Ralph G. Anderson.

“When he can back to his roots, he began an incredible series of restoration – Walnut Hall, the Blue Front and Wildwood to name a few. He encouraged economic development with his support of “The Legend of Daniel Boone” and most recently, the Kentucky Agriculture Heritage Center. He was a great friend to The James Harrod Trust, Harrodsburg Historical Society, Mercer County Library, Shaker Village and so many more. He was positive unassuming. Just until recently when asked how he was, he would answer, ‘Fantastic!’ That is the way I will remember him –o Fantastic,: said Dedman.

Anderson, 86, died Saturday in Cincinnati. He founded the Cincinnati-based Belcan Corporation in 1958, and it is now one of he largest engineering firms in the nation with 7,500 employee worldwide.

A 1950 mechanical engineering graduate of the University of Kentucky, Anderson was the lead donor for the university’s $25 million facility housing UK’s mechanical engineering programs, and the building bears his name.

Well known as a philanthropist, Anderson had a keen interest in historic preservation and was also committed to promoting Kentucky agriculture. He loved his native Mercer County and donated land for Anderson-Dean Community Park, renovated several local historical properties and donated 50 acres on U.S. 127 North in Mercer County for the Kentucky Agriculture Heritage Center. He saved the Thomas Logan House at Anderson-Dean Community Park, gave generously to The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital, Ragged Edge Community Theater, Olde Town Tours, local churches and schools. He paid for a study conducted by the University of Kentucky to determine the need for a swimming pool for the local community, and he funded the local option vote here.

His Anderson Circle Farm in Mercer County, encompassing more than 7,000 acres, is known as one of Kentucky’s leading beef cattle breeders and producers. Its state-of-the-art show and sale barn had become a local landmark and has been used for numerous community events, due to Anderson’s generosity.

When accepting The James Harrod Trust’s first Jane Bird Hutton Preservation Award in 2001, Anderson said his father once told him he wouldn’t amount to a hill of beans if he couldn’t milk a cow. He proved his farther wrong, worked his way through college as a $50 per month student instructor and later amassed a fortune with his own engineering company.

“He was just a one of a kind person who always wanted to give back ot he community in so many ways – he was just an outstanding person, said former Mercer County Judge-Executive John Trisler.

Trisler met Anderson 20 years ago when the community park was created. “He gave the first $50,000, then 100 acres. He and Ruth (Anderson’s wife) were so supportive to add to the park. He helped anyone who really needed help and he meant a lot to me,” Trisler added.

“He was an outstanding person, and we will surely miss him. He was so unselfish in both his gifts and his life – we will never have anyone to do what he has done,” Trisler said.

Joe Myers, manager at Anderson Circle Farm the past three years, said Anderson showed a great deal of community support and his contributions will be used for many, many years. “I would call him a very wise person who had a lot of foresight. He was a pleasure to work for, was very supportive, loved the land, loved agriculture and especially loved Angus cattle,” Myers said, adding that there is no doubt Anderson financially supported many efforts. “I’m sure that will be missed,” said Myers.

“He visited the farm just before Christmas. He loved to come to the farm and see the cattle on the green pastures – he got a tremendous joy from that,” Myers said.

Anderson was born in Mercer County in 1923 and lived on a small farm on Warwick Road. In 1941, he went to Cincinnati in search of work. He joined the Air Force in 1943, returned to Cincinnati and entered the University of Cincinnati to study mechanical engineering two years and finished his degree at UK in 1950.

He worked for the Kett Corporation, and when the firm moved from Ohio to Florida in 1958, Anderson decided to stay in Cincinnati and start his own business. Business was slow the first few years, but Anderson led Belcan to the top of the engineering consulting industry.

Anderson was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Anderson, whom he married in 1947. He is survived by a daughter, Candace McCaw of Cincinnati. At The Herald’s press time Wednesday, funeral arrangements for Anderson were incomplete at the Thomas-Justin Memorial Funeral Home in Cincinnati.

RALPH ANDERSON

Our Opinion

Ralph G. Anderson leaves rich legacy

It was with sadness that we learned of the death of Ralph G. Anderson Saturday. In his 86 years, Anderson touched more lives than most of us will in half that time.

Born into a modest home in Mercer County, Anderson didn’t cotton to the idea of farming despite the fact his father told him “if he didn’t’ learn how to milk a cow, he’d never amount to a hill of beans.

While it is a worthy profession, we are glad Anderson balked on milking cows and chose the path he did, working himself through college and become the founder of Belcan Corporation in 1958, now one of the largest engineering firms in the nation.

Anyone living in Mercer County has benefited from Anderson’s generosity. He helped finance many community endeavors including the Anderson-Dean Community Park that bears his name, the local hospital, library, community theater, Shakertown, the Kentucky Agriculture Heritage Center, churches, schools and many historic preservation projects.

He preserved the land by accumulating acreage for his Anderson Circle Farm on U.S. 127 North and built a showbarn second to none. He could have used it only for his farm’s cattle sales and other endeavors, but he generously opened the showbarn as the venue for many community charitable events. During the past years, even though his health was failing, Anderson appeared at more than one community event, graciously signing copies of “Anderson’s Legacy,” by Margaret A. Lane and giving them away to guests. The book outlines Anderson’s 50 years with Belccan Corporation and its worldwide impact.

While Anderson’s generosity is what he may be remembered for most, we would be amiss not to share this man’s philosophy about life in general. His motto was “do what you say you’re going to do and be honest.” The Beclan Charter states “live by your word” and “think positively about your work and life.”

Living the American dream, Anderson said he didn’t plan each step of his success, but took advantage of opportunities. While having his business and a home in Cincinnati, he never forgot his Mercer County roots and enjoyed spending time at Anderson Circle Farm.

Just as he never forgot Mercer County, its citizens are not likely to forget him – his legacy will live on here for many years to come and will serve as a positive reminder that it takes hard work and seizing opportunities to be successful in life, and those who reach success should be generous in sharing it.

Anderson Circle Farm got its name because the land follows circles of country roads, but it is significant too in that Ralph Anderson came full circle back to his roots here, and Mercer County is blessed because of it.
