MABEL SHEENE

Mabel Emma Baughman Sheene, 93, widow of Edward Nicholas “Ironhead” Sheene, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010 at Charleston Health Care Center.

Born Aug. 31, 1916 in Connellys Springs, NC, she was the daughter of George W. and Minnie Shepard Baughman. She retired after 25 years at Corning Glass Works and was a long time member of Gethsemane Baptist Church.

Survivors include: her daughter, Barbara (John) Lockhart; three sons, Tom Sheene, Benny (Carolyn) Sheene and Johnny (Dorothy) Sheene, all of Danville; 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Randy Sheene and a great-granddaughter, Julia Meade.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Feb. 23 at Gethsemane Baptist Church with Rev. Steve James officiating. Burial was in Bellevue Cemetery. Pallbearers were:Mike, Mark, Brandon, Todd and Johnny Clay Sheene, Brian Lockhart, Todd Smothers and Dale Gilliam. Honorary pallbearers were Zachary, Benjamin, Zack, Rocky and Henry Sheene, Cody Smothers, Nathan Cunningham, and Mason, Alex and Andrew Lockhart.

Memorial donations are suggested to Gethsemane Baptist Church.

HOMER SHELTON

Mr. Homer Shelton, Jr., 71, of Crab Orchard, passed away Monday, February 22, 2010 at his home. He was the husband of Vickie Keeling Shelton whom he married on June 18, 1988.

Homer was born in Garrard County, on December 26, 1938, the son of the late Homer and Ruby Christine Ledford Shelton.

He was a US Navy veteran and a member of the Watts Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors Include: his wife, Vickie Keeling Shelton of Crab Orchard; two sons, Kevin (Tammy) Shelton and Monte Shelton and companion Angela, both of Crab Orchard; two stepsons, Jerry (Shauna) Perkins of Harrodsburg, Llyric Perkins and companion, Heather of Lexington; one sister, Nerissa (Johnny) Baker of Crab Orchard; and four grandchildren, Logan, Lucas, Chase and Keesha Shelton.

In addition to his parents Homer was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Illene Shelton.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, February 25, at the McKnight Funeral Home chapel with Bro. Tony Shelton officiating. Burial will be in the Wilmot cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 24, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Bud Saylor, John Baker, Clarence Shelton, Dennis and Earl Baker and Jimmy Baker, Jr.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Johnny Blanton & Colson Wilson

WILLIAM SMART

William "Bill" D. Smart, 90, of Louisville, formerly of Versailles, widower of Dottie Butts Smart, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at the Baptist East Hospital after a short illness.

Born Sept. 26, 1919, in Bourbon County, he was the son of the late William and Anna Elizabeth Shankland Smart.

He was raised in Nicholas County and was a 1937 graduate of Carlisle High School, and graduate of Morehead State University. He received his master’s degree from the University of Kentucky. He began teaching at Versailles High School, then served as a principal of Carroll County, Spencer County, Mt. Sterling, Harrodsburg, Montgomery County, and Scott County high schools. He had also been principal at Stamping Ground Elementary School and was superintendent at the Eminence School District. He worked for the Department of Education in Frankfort as an instructional supervisor and school organizational specialist until his retirement in 1984. He also worked for the federal government in the Department of the Army and the Social Security Administration. He lived in Versailles until 2005, he moved to Louisville and most recently he was a resident of the Middletown Christian Village. He was a member of the First Christian Church, where he was an elder emeritus, was an associate member of the Middletown Christian Church, Louisville, and was a Mason.

Survivors include: three daughters, Sherrill (Scott) Holt, Louisville, Linda (Larry) Glass, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Barbara (Woody) Slade, Flora, Ind.; five grandchildren, Brian (Debbie) Glass, Darren (Emily) Glass, both of Cincinnati, Sheri (Travis ) Denton, Newburgh, Ind., Cari (Chad) Adkins, Louisville, and Mark (Lisa) Slade, Chesterton, Ind.; and seven great-grandchildren.

Two brothers, Cecil and Kenneth, are deceased.

Services were conducted Friday, Feb. 19, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by the Rev. Don Vanzant. Burial followed in the Versailles Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Brian Glass, Darren Glass, Mark Slade, Travis Denton, Chad Adkins, Ron Smart and Bill C. Smart.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Week of Compassion. Envelopes are available at the funeral home, or may be mailed to First Christian Church 160 Lexington Street, Versailles, KY 40383.

WILLIE BONTA

Willie Hood Bonta, 96, died Monday, March 1 at the Lafayette County Place, Lexington.

A native of Washington County, she was the daughter of the late William Patrick and Mildred Powell Hatchett. She attended both Transylvania and the University of Kentucky and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She was also a member of the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church. She was the widow of her first husband, N. S. Buster and second husband, Louis G. Bonta.

Survivors include: a son: N. S. “Buzz” Buster, and a sister: Mildred H. McGaughey, both of Lexington and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Albert, Emmitt, and J. P. Hatchett.

Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, March 3 at the Spring Hill Cemetery, with Rev. Ken Klemme officiating. Ransdell Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

VIOLET BOONE

Violet Webb Boone, 85, of Springfield, passed away at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at the Springfield Nursing & Rehab Center.

A native of Mercer County, she was born Sept. 11, 1924 to the late Buell and Ophia Devine Webb.

She was a member of the Temple Baptist Church and a retired employee of the Armour Food Company.

Preceding her in death were her husband, William H. Boone on April 4, 2000, and a brother, Lois Webb on Oct. 7, 1993.

Survivors include: two daughters, Gerry Smith of Springfield and Anne (James) Neel of Fredericktown; three grandchildren; Maureen (Jamie) Curtsinger, David (Jenny) Neel and Derick (Bethany) Neel; and six great-grandchildren, Isabella Neel, Jack Neel, Kaleigh Neel, Jacob Curtsinger, Joshua Curtsinger and Mary Katherine Curtsinger.

Funeral services were held Friday, February 19 at Carey & Son Funeral Home, with Rev. John McDaniel, pastor of the Temple Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial was in St. Dominic-Holy Rosary Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were David Neel, Derick Neel, Jamie Curtsinger, Freddie Smith, Donald Weakley and Tommy Kidwell.

Carey & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

LEONA BRADLEY

Leona “Boots” Bradley, 79, of Harrodsburg, wife of Lloyd Bradley, died Friday, Feb. 26, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Jan. 13, 1931 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Roach and Margie (Green) Farney. She was a former secretary at Cricketeer Manufacturing and a clerk at the State Bank and Trust. She was a member of the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church and Order #309 of the Eastern Star. She was the widow of O. C. Currens Sr.

Survivors include: her husband: Lloyd Bradley and a son: O. C. (Barb) Currens of Stanford; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by three brothers: Allen, Robert and Condit Farney and two sisters, Helen Ruth Elliott and Grace Curtsinger Devine.

Funeral services were conducted March 1 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Ken Klemme and Dale Denton officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: John Wayne Peavler, Kenny Kurtz, Bill King, Arthur Bradley, Carlos Lester, Gene Curtsinger and Harold Davis. Honorary Bearers were Dr. John Alexander, Dr. Don Hamner, Order 309 of the Easter Star members and members of the Yates-Spillman Sunday School Class.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Heritage Hospice, P. O. Box 1213, Danville, KY 40422 or to the Central Kentucky Cancer Program, 217 South Third Street, Danville, KY 40422.

DORA BRISCOE

Dora Louise Cunningham Green Briscoe, 80, of Lawrenceburg, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010 at her residence. She was married to the late Lawrence Briscoe for 40 years. She was born January 14, 1930 in Jefferson County, KY to the late Jeanett Phillips and Howard Clark Cunningham.

She was raised in Mercer County, a 1948 graduate of Salvisa High School, former accountant with the Kentucky Finance Department and member of Sand Spring Baptist Church.

Mrs. Briscoe is survived by three sons, Garnett Stanley “Sonny” Green of Lawrenceburg, William Howard (Trudy) Green of Dickson, TN, Jerry Clark (Debbie) Briscoe of Lawrenceburg; two step-sons, Richard L. (Jane) Briscoe, and Stanley L. Briscoe, both of Harrodsburg; a brother, Howard (Arlene) Cunningham of Raleigh, NC; a sister, Irene Baker of Austin, TX; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her companion James Edward Davis Sr. of Lawrenceburg.

Funeral services were conducted March 2 at Ritchie and Peach Funeral Home with Dr. Mike Hamrick officiating. Burial was in Hebron Cemetery in Anderson County.

Pallbearers were Bruce Meeks, Brandon Briscoe, Brian Briscoe, J.C. Briscoe, Davy Warford, and Michael Dieter.

Honorary bearers were Joseph Briscoe, Crystal Green, Dorie Green, and Nathan Green.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 208 Steele St., Frankfort, KY 40601.

WILDA CESSNA

Wilda Cessna, 91, died Thursday, Feb. 25 at James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 18, 1919 in Muhlenberg County, she was the daughter of the late John and Frances Stillmore Vincent. She was retired from General Electric Company.

Survivors include: one son, Clay (Doris) Cessna of Danville; a brother, Hubert (Karen) Vincent; two grandchildren, Kim Loughery and Lori Baker and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at a later date. Stith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. .

RAYMOND COX

Raymond Cox, 98. widower of Evelyn Brown Cox, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, at his home.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late William Andrew and Annie Pearl Cook Cox, and was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church. He was retired from the Woodford County Road Department.

Survivors include: his daughter, Rosemary (Dave) Johnson of Versailles; a sister, Lorraine (Carl) Phillips of Lexington; three foster sisters, Christine True, Jenny Smith, Clara Ann Dozier, and a foster brother, Earl Baxter Moore; one granddaughter and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Henry Cox and J. B. Cox; a foster sister, Mary Jo Moore and two foster brothers, Herbert Moore and Billy Moore.

Funeral services were held, Saturday, Jan. 30 at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home with Rev. John Brandon officiating. Burial was in the Versailles Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 208 Steele St., Frankfort, KY 40601.

CAROL CRAIG

Carol Lee Proctor Craig, 65, wife of Chester Craig, Sr., of Harrodsburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 31, 1944 in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Westley Sheldon and Jean Bordeaux Proctor. She was a retired Secretary to the Principal at Madison County Vocational School and had been a Budget Clerk at National Institute for Health. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church.

Besides her husband, survivors include one son, Thomas C. Howell of Lexington; one daughter, Wendy Howell Walker of Columbia, MD; one step daughter, Tesa Craig of Harrodsburg; one step-son, Chester Craig, Jr. of Harrodsburg; five grandchildren, four step grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sisters Barbara Proctor and Sonya Hartman.

Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 26 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. John David Lane officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery with Kelly Carmickle, Darrin Ward, Douglas Underwood, Willie C. Turpin, Jr., Jonathon Sherrow and Mitch Cocanougher serving as pallbearers.

JAMES CUNNINGHAM

James David Cunningham, 60, of Harrodsburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010 at U.K.-Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington.

Born Aug. 27, 1949 in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Lou Ellen Fint and Wilda “Bill” Jefferson Cunningham. He was a 1967 graduate of Mercer County High School, a former employee of Texas Instruments in Versailles and a member of Kirkwood Baptist Church.

He is survived by four sisters, Pam Switzer of Harrodsburg, Patricia (Michael) Singer of Louisville, Mary (Ricky) Carey of Harrodsburg, and Barb (Greg Spicer) Sanders of Lawrenceburg; a brother, Jimmy Gilmore of Harrodsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 26, 2010 at Ritchie and Peach Funeral Home with Bro. Kenny Queener officiating. Honorary pallbearers were Ricky Dale Carey Jr., Joshua Lee Carey, Jason Paul Carey, Timothy Scott Sanders, Jeffrey Cole Sanders, Charles Raymond Craig, and David Walden.

Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes. Association, P.O. Box 21903, Lexington, KY 40522.
