EZRA YOUNG

Ezra Arvis Young, 87, of White Oak Road, died Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

Born Saturday, January 6, 1923 in Casey County, he was a son of the late Joseph Walter and Esther Ada Lawless Young.

Arvis enjoyed working and was a farmer, school bus driver, car mechanic, carpenter and worked in a saw mill. He was a long time member of Mt. Freeman Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for more than 50 years. He was the widower of Alma T. Plumer Young after 56 years of marriage.

Survivors include two daughters, Jacquelyn (Karl) Wagner of Junction City and Phyllis Young of Danville; two sons, Warren and Barry Young, both of Junction City and Randall Young of Danville; three brothers, Vernon Young of Harrodsburg, Stanley Young of Burgin, and Heston Young of Junction City; one sister, Eva Hendren of Danville; four grandchildren and five great-grand hildren.

An Appreciation of Life service was held Monday, March 15, at the Mt. Freeman Baptist Church with Bros. Steve Owens and Bill Rhodus officiating. Burial followed in Bellevue Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Karl Wagner, David Summers, Chad Williams, Greg Compton, Hugh Lynch, and Richard Covey.

Honorary pallbearers were the Senior Men’s Sunday School class, Dr. David Overstreet, Dr. Tariq Muhammad, Morris, Sam and Eddie Martin, Alan and Bruce King, and Conley Wilkerson.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the National Kidney Foundation.

VICTOR ARCURI

Victor B. Arcuri Jr., 62, of Bend, OR, husband of Sandra Camic Arcuri, formerly of Danville, died Saturday, March 13, 2010.

Born Nov. 18, 1947 in Raleigh, NC, he was the son of Victor B. Arcuri, Sr. of Springfield, OR and the late Ann Todd Arcuri. He attended schools in Portland and Eugene, OR and also Lane Community College in Eugene, OR and Seattle University. He then served his country in the US Army during the Vietname War. He worked in the banking business.

Survivors other than his wife and father include: his son, Todd (Amber) Bezates of Eugene, OR; a brother, Tim (Jean) Arcuri of Springfield, OR; a sister, Dorian (Bob) Arcuri of Eugene, OR.; one granddaughter; three nephews; his father-in-law, Roy R. Camic of Danville; brother-in-law, Michael (Leslie) Camic of Danville and a sister-in-law, Bettie (H.K.) Kingkade of Lexington.

A funeral mass was held at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Bend, OR on Friday, March 19. The Niswonger and Reynolds Funeral Home in Bend, OR was in charge of area arrangements. An electronic guest register for the family may be found by visiting their website www.niswonger-reynolds.com

Burial will be held at a later date in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Sims Funeral Services is in charge of local arrangements.

SHANE ASH

Shane Austin Ash, 3-month- old son of Victoria Everman and Joseph Ash of Harrodsburg, died Thursday, March 18, 2010 at the University Of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. He was born December 3, 2009 in Lexington.

In addition to his parents he is survived by his maternal grandparents Kathleen Luttrell of Versailles and John Everman of Lexington; paternal grandparents Tammy Sigman and Doyle Brown, both of Crestwood; maternal great-grandparents Charles and Evelyn Matherly of Danville; paternal great-grandparents Keith and Mary Sigman of Shelbyville, IN; paternal great-great-grandmother Carrie Brown; maternal great-great-grandparents Wayne and Mary Everman and a great-great-great-grandmother Wandis Everman and special friend Johnny Burks of Harrodsburg.

Funeral services were conducted March 22 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Mike Cox officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

HELEN CLOYD

Helen Hall Durrett Cloyd, 88, of Junction City, died Friday March 19, 2010 at her residence.

Born Sept. 10, 1921, she was the daughter of William and Stella Hall Durrett and the widow of Robert Samuel Cloyd. She was a teacher in the Boyle County School System teaching all grades in middle and high school and ended her career as the homebound teacher for the system. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Junction City.

She is survived by her son, James William “Jimmy” (Linda) Cloyd of Junction City; her daughter, Roberta Ann (Dennis) Willming of Brentwood, TN; a sister, Anne (Lou) Matthews-Greco of Melbourne, FL; two brothers, Frank (Mildred) Durrett of Alum Springs and William “Bill” (Jewell) Durrett of Frankfort.; two grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Funeral Services were held March 23 at the Stith Funeral Home with Rev. Dale Denton officiating. Burial was in Danville Memorial Gardens. Memorials are suggested to the Junction City First Baptist Church Building Fund.

MILDRED GEURIN

Mildred L. Geurin, 97, of Harrodsburg, died Tuesday, March 16 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born Jan. 7, 1913 in Calloway County, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Louiza Ann (Sellars) Tucker. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Harrodsburg. She was a homemaker, employed in food services at Faxon School, and assisted with the family farm.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Mary Geurin; three grandchildren; David (Lori) Geurin, Jackie (Jeremiah) Bishop and Jeri (Mark) Stein; one sister in law, Mary Belle Brantley and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph Geurin; her son, Rev. Jack Geurin and six sisters, Audrey Andrews, Mamie Dyer, Lois Outland, Rexie Tucker, Olene Tucker, and Evelyn Alexander.

Funeral services were conducted March 19 at the Elm Grove Baptist Church in Murray with Rev. Thurmon Harris officiating. Burial was in the Elm Grove Cemetery. Ransdell Funeral Chapel assisted with local arrangements.

LENA GRAHAM

Lena C. Russell Graham, 85, of Mackville, died Monday, March 15, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born April 2, 1924 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late James “Jim” and Sallie Elizabeth Mobley Russell.

She was a member of the Mackville Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for a number of years, a graduate of Mackville High School, attended Campbellsville College, Georgetown College and graduated from Eastern Kentucky University. She was a retired school teacher and hosted a religious radio program on WLBN known as “A Thought For The Day” for many years.

She is survived by nieces and nephews, including, Glenn Best and his wife, Barbara of Springfield.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Don A. Graham; her sister, Virginia Russell Best; and her brother, Hollis C. Russell.

Funeral services were held March 17 at Carey and Son Funeral Home, with Rev. David Gifford officiating. He was assisted by Rev. Tim Hawkins and Rev. Paul Readnour. Burial was in Peter Cemetery at Mackville.

Former students of Mrs. Graham served as honorary and active pallbearers.

Pallbearers were: Robert Bruce Parrott, Gary Scott, Gerald Mattingly, Kevin Russell, Ricky Lewis, Jamie Baker, Kevin Isham, Roney Bottom and Bill Fowler. Honorary pallbearers were: Stanley Yaste, Jim Smith, Danny Settles, Chris Holderman, David Shewmaker, Martha Dell Shewmaker, Brenda Noel, Inelle Settles, Gloria Cochran, Jane Pinkston Bottom, Debbie McIntosh, Phyllis Butler, Rosemary Devine and Donna Sue Warner.

Carey and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

LOUIS LEFFEW

Louis “Cotton” Leffew, 75, of Junction City, died Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Harrodsburg Health Care.

Born Monday, February 11, 1935 in Mitchellsburg, he was a son of the late Andrew and Idabel Vaught Leffew.

He was the owner of Leffew and Son Concrete and a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church. He enjoyed drag races, pool, poker, and traveling.

Survivors include: his wife, Yvonne Hall Leffew of Junction City; three sons, Jerry (Becky) Leffew and Ed (Kym) Leffew, both of Junction City, and Ronnie Leffew of Stanford; one daughter, Marilyn (Tony) Tillett of Stanford; two step sons, Gary (Pam) Hall of Jessamine County and Elmer (Degala) Hall of San Antonio, FL; favorite niece, Louis Adrio of Mitchellsburg; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Leffew was predeceased by brother, William Leffew, two sisters, Minnie Adams and Viola Engle; and special niece, Betty Jeter.

A graveside service was conducted Monday, March 22, at Chambers Cemetery with Bro. Steve James officiating.

Pallbearers were David and Todd Strong, Travis and Jarrod Leffew, Troy Collier and Tommy Privett.

Honorary pallbearers were Estill Sims, James and Lester Dotson, Steve Tyler, Alford Smith, and all his pool and poker buddies.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Diabetes. Association.

JUANITA MITCHELL

Juanita Bowen Mitchell, 79, of Lawrenceburg, died Saturday, March 21, 2010 at the Frankfort Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Washington County, daughter of the late Calvin Hunt and Mary Bertha Royalty Bowen Sr. She was the widow of Bobby Mitchell.

She was a homemaker; a member of Fox Creek Christian Church, and a longtime member of Antioch Christian Church; a member of the sister’s quilting club; and a 1948 graduate of Willisburg High School.

She is survived by: one daughter, Deborah Ann Lay, Lawrenceburg; two sons, James “Jimmy” (Sheila) Mitchell, Lawrenceburg, and Robert Allen Mitchell, Willisburg; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lula Euliano, Meadville, PA., Norma Jean (Eugene) Royalty, Lawrenceburg, Bernice Thomas, Chaplin; two brothers, Raymond (Vena) Bowen, Harrodsburg, and Calvin H. (Brenda) Bowen Jr., Lawrenceburg.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Valley, and Martha “Leck” Robinson; and a brother, Naamon Bowen.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 23, at the Gash Memorial Chapel, Lawrenceburg, with Bro. Don Wells and Bro. Mark Wells officiating. Burial followed in Lawrenceburg Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Lung Association, P.O. Box 9067, Louisville, KY 40209-0067. or Fox Creek Christian Church, 2020 Fox Creek Road, Lawrenceburg, KY 40342.

Casketbearers were Brian Lay, Sonny Lay, Josh Mitchell, Brandon Mitchell, Stephen Mitchell, Spencer Ryan, Trent Easterling, Colin, Jackson Mitchell, and Zachary West.

Honorary Bearer was Albert Harris.

IRENE MURPHY

Irene Faye Pendergraft Murphy, 64, widow of Donald Murphy, died Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center in Richmond.

Born Oct. 11, 1945 in Marion County, she was the daughter of the late George and Lucille Followell Pendergraft. She had worked at Wal-Mart as a cashier for 13 years and was a member of the Bradfordsville Christian Church.

Survivors include: one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy Murphy Hill and Clifford A. Hill of Richmond; two step-sons, Donald H. (Angie) Murphy and Terry L. Murphy of Springfield; two sisters, Margaret L. Weston of Indiana and Sue Pendergraft of Whitley City; two grandsons, three step grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, William Murphy; one brother, Walter Pendergraft; twin sister Corene M. Long; sister Virginia Pendergraft and one grandson, Matthew Shawn Hill.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 23, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Heneisen officiating. Burial was in Peters Cemetery in Mackville with James McKinney, Bill Hackworth, Robbie McGuffin, Cody Curtsinger, Cody Gibson, Rob Wescott, and Ty Gibson serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Gary Long, Courtnei Long, Michael Murphy, Bradley Hill, Ervin Foster, Greg Abell, Randal Pendergraft, Becky Abell, and DeAnna Wescott.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Compassionate Care Center, 350 Isaac Lane, Richmond, KY 40475.

ROY SINGLETON

Roy L. “Pete” Singleton, 79, died Friday, March 19, 2010 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Singleton; three daughters, Louellen (Terry) Turner, of Junction City, Geni (Jerry) Dismuke of Danville and Dianna Combs of Stanford.; two brothers, William (Agnes) Singleton of Paris and Claude Singleton (Mary Evelyn) of Lexington; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 24 at Junction City First Baptist Church with burial in Camp Nelson National Cemetery.

Memorial Donation are suggested to the Shriners Children’s Hospital.

VENETTA SPRINGATE

Venetta M. Springate, 90, widow of John Edward Springate, died Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at the Sayre Christian Village, Lexington.

Born Sept. 22, 1919 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Robert Charles, “R.C.” and Flora (Bruner) Bottom. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include: one son, Tony E. Springate of Lexington, 8 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Judy Catherine Springate and three sisters, Ressie Bailey, Ava Elliott and Nellie Lester.

Graveside services were conducted March 19 at the Spring Hill Cemetery by Bill Miller. The Ransdell Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
