SHERRY YOUNG

Sherry Lynn Taylor Young, 48, of Harrodsburg, died Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Medical Center.

Born in Fayette County, she was a daughter of Russell and Angela Taylor.

She was a member of Porter Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors other than her parents include: two daughters, Tanya and Cecelia Young; four grandchildren, Mia, Aiden, Hailie and Tanner; and four sisters, Linda Clark (Bobby), Carrie Holliday (Jerry), Cathy Ashcraft (Glenn) and Angie Tillman (Cotton).

Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 10, at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home-Main Street, Lexington. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

LETTIE BAKER

Lettie Baker, 78, of Stanford, widow of Lige Baker, died Monday, May 17, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born April 24, 1932 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late John Lee and Effie (Dearing) Smock. She was a R. C. Cola Bottling employee and a member of the Fellowship Holiness Church in Nicholasville.

Survivors include: two daughters, Rita Graham of Salvisa, and Susan Clarkson of Danville; a son, William H. Lane of Daytona Beach, FL and a sister, Myrtle Cox of Lawrenceburg; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 20 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Benny Baker officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Nicholasville.

Pallbearers are: Floyd M. Graham, Michael Graham, Phillip Clarkson, William Warren, Bill Cox and Wayne Cox.

Visitation Wednesday, May 19 from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Alzheimer’s Association.

FRANCES BECK

Frances Beck was born Dec. 6, 1910, the daughter of Will and Cordia Bottom. She spent most of her childhood in Mackville. Frances was married in 1945 and moved with her husband to California in 1957. She is predeceased by her husband, Buren F. Beck and son, William T. Smith.

Frances is survived by six grandchildren, Mike Smith of McKinney, Texas , Richard Smith of Swansea, Ill., Stephen Smith of Port Republic, Va., Sharon Goss, Austin, Texas , JP Smith of Yorktown, Va., and Linda Spalding of Lebanon; along with 10 great-grandchildren.

Frances left this earth on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 where she passed peacefully in her sleep.

The family held a celebration of Frances’ life on Sunday, May 16, at Brown Colonial Mortuary, 204 W. 17th Street, Santa Ana, Calif. Her remains were laid to rest next to her late husband, Buren, Monday, May 17, at Riverside National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Frances’ memory to St. Francis Home, 1718 West 6th Street, Santa Ana, CA 92703.

GUYLA CAREY

Guyla Ann Richardson Simpson Carey, 40, of Lancaster died Sunday, May 16, 2010.

Born March 11, 1970 in Danville., she is the daughter of Barbara Richardson Herring Mason of Junction City.

She attended The Wesleyan Church and was a homemaker who enjoyed crafts, making butterflies, roosters, and painting.

She is also survived by: her husband, Tom Carey Jr., Lancaster; her children, Amber (Kenneth) Atkinson, Heather (Marvin Eldridge) Simpson, and Matt Harvey Simpson all of Harrodsburg; grandchildren, Kai and Ace Atkinson; two sisters, Cassandra Herring of Junction City, and Diana (Artis) George of Moreland; and one brother, Christopher Allen Herring of Junction City; and nieces Savannah Hodge and Baylea Reynolds.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 20, at the Wesleyan Church with the Reverend Robert Tolson Burial will be in Wilson-Fairview Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Chris Reynolds, Marvin Wade Eldridge, Kenneth Atkinson, Matthew Simpson, Ray Ross and Johnathan Ursprung.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Junction City.

Donations may be sent in memory of Guyla Carey to Stith Funeral Home.

CLINT HOBBS

Clint J. Hobbs, 59, of Loveland, OH, husband of Beverly Hobbs, died Tuesday, May 18, 2010 in Loveland.

Born Feb. 23, 1951 in Beattyville, he was the son of John Hobbs of OH and the late Margaret Johnson Hobbs Riley. He was a factory worker.

Survivors besides his wife and father include: three children, Clint Hobbs Jr., Christopher (Krista) Hobbs, and Crystal (Jaimie) Keeton all of OH; two step children, Megan (Brian) Baker and Pete Leonard, both of OH; three sisters, Nancy Bowman, Kitsie Fay Lee, both of OH and Freeda Combs, of KY; three half sisters, Barbara (Glenn) Carr of Harrodsburg, Dorothy Combs, Beatrice Meyers, and Robin Stamper of OH; three half brothers, Vernon Hobbs and Ricky Hobbs both of OH and Jesse Hobbs, TN; one grandchild, five step grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2010 at Tufts Schildmeyer Family Funeral Home, 129 N. Riverside Ave., Loveland, OH. Burial will be at Laurel Cemetery in Monroe Township, OH. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of SW OH. The Tufts Schildmeyer Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. This obituary is submitted at the request of local family members by Sims Funeral Services of Harrodsburg.

ROBERT KIRKLAND

Robert Lee “Bobby” Kirkland, Jr., 64 of Harrodsburg died Monday, May 17, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital Extended Care.

Born April 23, 1946 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Robert and Elizabeth Britton Kirkland, Sr.. He was a retired farmer and former owner of Leesburg Grocery and Farm Supply, and a member of the Bethel Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Mercer County Fish and Game Club.

Survivors include: two sons, Alex Kirkland of Oakwood Village, OH and Lee (Jennifer) Kirkland of Mercer County; one daughter, Stephanie (Ken) Allen of Mercer County; three sisters, Lorraine Adkins, Lorretta Vandivier, and Betty Tiffey, all of Harrodsburg; two grandsons, one granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Judy Burns and Joann Maruschak.

A graveside funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, May 22 at the Bethel Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Mike Cox officiating. No visitation will be held.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Heritage Hospice, P.O. Box 1213, Danville, KY 40422.

Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES NALLY

James Albertus Nally, 61, of 2753 Cane Run Road, Springfield, died at 3 a.m. Saturday, May 15, 2010 at his residence.

Born Aug. 13, 1948 in Washington County, he was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Thurman Nally, Nov. 2, 1992; his mother, Mary Rose Smith Nally on May 2, 1981; and his brother, Charles Thurman Nally on Nov. 18, 2000.

He was retired from General Electric Company, Building 5 & 6, where he worked in maintenance control. He was a farmer and a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

He is survived by: his wife, Betty Smith Nally; one son, James Kevin (Joy) Nally of Springfield; two daughters, Angela Renee (Dennis) Smith of Springfield and Mary Margaret (Greg) Hugenberg of Lawrenceburg; three brothers, Joseph Sheridan (Gertrude) Nally of Bardstown, Joseph Victor (Eunice) Nally of Springfield and Francis Leo Nally of Lebanon; one sister, Ida Bernadine (James) Benham of Harrodsburg; and three grandchildren, Sidney and Shelby Smith and Noah Parrott.

Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, May 18, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fredericktown with Rev. Mark Spalding officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

A prayer service was held Monday, May 17, 2010.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Taylor, Frankie Taylor, David Taylor, Robbie Smith, Chris Benham and Terry Nally.

Honorary pallbearers were Marlin Spalding, Patrick Wimsatt, Buddie Smith, Bobby Smith, Bill Cheser, Sammy Berry, Herb Smith and Johnnie Smith.

Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

J. D. SETTLES

J. D. Settles, 84, of Willisburg, died Sunday, May 16 at his residence.

Born May 25, 1925 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Roy Allen and Mayme Darland Settles. He was a farmer and a member of Thompsonville Baptist Church.

Survivors include: his wife, Eliza Jane Curtsinger Settles; a son, Jimmy Allen Settles of Louisville; three daughters, Margaret, Alice and Kay Settles, five step-sons, Carroll (Anita) Settles of Willisburg, Benjamin (Judy) Settles of Springfield, Stevie Settles of Mackville, Donnie (Cheryl) Settles of Mackville, and Gary (Jessica) Settles of Willisburg; seven step-daughters, Elanor (Allen) Moore of Springfield, Barbara (Alan) Lewis of Bloomfield, Judy (Roger) Payton, Kathy (Ernie) Devine and Gloria (Rodney) Hamblin, all of Harrodsburg, Connie (Keith) Chesser and Sherry (Roy) Bobblitt, all of Willisburg; three sisters, Nancy (Connie) Gabhart of Mackville, Delilah Belcher of Mackville and Janice (Jim) Stine of Springfield; five brothers, Murriell (Nancy) Settles of Willisburg, Everett (Marie) Settles, Elbert Settles, Joe (Carol) Settles, all of Springfield and Larry Settles of Calvary; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, 34 step-grandchildren and 47 step-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great granddaughter.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 19 at the Carey and Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Chesser officiating. Burial was in the Peter Cemetery in Mackville. Pallbearers were: Ernie Devine, Roy Boblitt Jr, Billy Frank Curtsinger, Timmy Hill, Terry Yates and Keith Chesser.

Carey and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

FRANCIS SMITH

Alma Francis Smith, 72, of Lexington, formerly of Waynesburg, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2010 at St. Joseph East.

She was born Sunday, February 27, 1938 in Lincoln County to the late Sherman & Mary Napier Combs.

She was a former employee for Reynold Uniform and a homemaker. She loved playing cards & enjoyed the company of her doggie “Tip”.

She is preceded in death by her parents; a son, Michael Keith Smith; brothers, Clayton and Carlos Smith; and her sister Lisa Combs.

She is survived: by her husband of 55 years, M. T. Smith of Lexington; two sons, Wayne Smith and his companion, Crystal Roberts of Versailles and Darrell (Shawn ) Smith of Lexington; three daughters, Sue (Phil) O’Berry of Folkston, GA, Kathy (Marion) Bailey of Lexington and Michelle (Jon) Estes of Lake Helen, FL; five brothers, Dean (Johnnie) of Lexington, Ray Combs of Lexington, Gary (Vickie) Combs of Harrodsburg, Doug (Jean) Combs of Waynesburg, Gene (Linda) Combs of Lexington; six sisters, Faye McConnell of Delaware, OH, Linda (Donald) McKinney of Danville, Sharon Singleton and Audrey Combs, both of Stanford, Freida (Walter) Trent of Lancaster and Carolyn (Jerry) Petrey of Crab Orchard; 10 grandchildren, Bluster Wayne Lee, Steven Wayne Lee, Selena Kristine Warren, Latosha Denise Carter, Nicole Daniel Bailey, Jason Phillip O’Berry, Kristen Lacy Bailey, Brandon Keith Smith, Jessica Renee Estes and Erica Rose Estes; and five great-grandchildren.

An Appreciation of Life service was held Tuesday, May 18th at the Barnett-Demrow Funeral Home, Waynesburg, by Bro. Vola Brown with burial in Double Springs Cemetery.

Marion Bailey, Jon Estes, Brandon Smith, Phil O’Berry, Chris Warren, Brad Marley and Austin Combs served as the Pallbearers.

MARY SPIKER

Mary Catholine Spiker, 89, of Harrodsburg, died peacefully Saturday, May 10, 2010.

Miss Spiker, daughter of the late Rev. Thomas Spiker and the late Lena Swisher Spiker of West Virginia was retired after 25 years with VA Hospital in Murfreesboro, TN.

She is survived by: her brother, Bill Spiker, Vienna, WV; and two nieces, Donna Carter, Harrodsburg, and Patricia Beck, Cocoa, FL.

Miss Spiker, a resident of Madison, TN for more than 40 years, will be interred beside her parents at Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville, TN.

ARLIE VOTAW

Pallbearers for the funeral services of Arlie Votaw, which was held Saturday, May 15 at Willisburg Christian Church, were: Scott Blakeman, Brad Blakeman, Phillip Temple, Philip Coulter, Garland Scrogham and Tommy Yaste.

Carey and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

DANNY WILSON

Danny Craig Wilson, 50, of Harrodsburg, died Thursday, May 13, 2010 in Panama City, FL.

Born March 3, 1960 in Cincinnati, OH, he was the son of Carlie and Shirley Daws Wilson of Harrodsburg. He was a 1978 graduate of Milford High School in OH and a 1982 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University. He was a Baptist by faith.

Survivors other than his parents include: two brothers, Jeffrey Wilson of Kennesaw, GA and Stephen Wilson of Florence; a sister, Melissa Gentile of Cincinnati, OH; his former wife, Sherry Whitehouse Wilson; three nephews and one niece.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 17 at the Mann and Greenwell Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Logue officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International Bible Distribution at www.gideons.org, or the Freedom Baptist Church of Lawrenceburg, P.O. Box 332, Lawrenceburg, KY 40342.

Mann and Greenwell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

BRENDA DARLAND

Brenda Gayle Darland, 67, of Harrodsburg, wife of Marshall William Darland, died Friday, May 21, 2010.

Born Dec. 29, 1942 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of Leola Day Combs and the late Fred Marian Combs. She was a retired registered nurse and a member of the Ebenezer Church of Christ, where she actively worked with the Quest Youth Group.

Other survivors include a daughter, Marti Iacono of Danville and three sons: Lee (Joyce) Darland, Dean Darland, Alan (Trish) Darland, all of Harrodsburg; one sister, Freida Howard of Harrodsburg and one brother, Keith Combs of Salvisa and seven grandsons.

She was preceded in death by a son, Gene Lance Darland.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 25 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with John Kesel officiating. Burial was in the Ebenezer Cemetery in Salvisa.

Pallbearers were Scott and Chad Howard, Daulton Hendren, Thomas Robinson, Larry Peyton, and David Cinnamon. Honorary bearers were: Jim Perkins, Arnold Eldridge, Jim Dunn and grandsons.
