JOYCE NELSON

Joyce Ann Nelson, 69, of Harrodsburg, widow of Jack Nelson, died Saturday, June 12, 2010 at her home after an illness.

Born August 6, 1940 in Richmond, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Agnes Hill Collins. She was a homemaker and retired K-Mart cashier.

Survivors include: a daughter: Janet (John) Underwood of Harrodsburg, and a son: Jimmy (Rhonda) Nelson of Somerset, four brothers: Neville (Anita) Collins, Kenneth (Anna) Collins both of Lexington, Charles (Joan) Collins of Paris, Tommy (Beverly) Collins of Versailles, a sister: Jane Carol (Larry) DeMarino of Muncie, IN and a Sister-in-Law: Judith Mueller of Des Plaines, IL; seven grandchildren, one great grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM, Tuesday, June 15 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Scott Bugg with burial in the Burgin Memorial Garden.

Pallbearers were: Mark Underwood, John Underwood, Denny Harrington, John Chapa, Darrell Collins and Malcolm Collins.

LLOYD SHEWMAKER

Lloyd Shewmaker, 98, of Burgin, died Saturday June 12, 2010 at James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 28, 1911 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Walter and Mayme Bottoms Shewmaker. He attended University of Kentucky, served during WWII in Saipan with the U.S. Army, was a member of the Mackville Baptist Church and a retired building contractor.

Survivors include: one son, Mitch (Sue) Shewmaker of Louisville; one daughter, Ann Shewmaker Boswell of Georgetown; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn Skimmerhorn, one son Lloyd Shewmaker and one grandchild.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 15 at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Donnie Releford officiating. Burial was in Peters Cemetery in Mackville with Brandon Hale, Tyler James, Lynn Cook, Paul Fowler, Steve James, Tony Devine and Jeff Boswell serving as pallbearers. Leon Shewmaker was an honorary pallbearer.

WALTER BEST

Walter Best, 95, widower of Gladys Bishop Best, died Thursday, June 17, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Oct. 28, 1914 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late James Burnett and Vica Bottom Best. He was a farmer, carpenter and a floor manager of Hollis Moberly and Freeman’s Tobacco Warehouse. He was the oldest member of the Mackville Baptist Church.

He is survived by a special niece, Jana (fiancé David Harbolt) Cocanougher Peavler; a special great-nephew, Jamie Peavler; a special great-niece, Amber Peavler; one sister: Eunice Best Cocanougher and one brother, Billy (Zella) Best.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Elmer and Edward (Ebb) Best; one sister, Ada Jewel Bishop and a great nephew, Don Allen Peavler.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 21, 2010 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Paul Readnour officiating. Burial was in the Peters Cemetery in Mackville with Eugene Bishop, Jamie Peavler, Dennis Cocanougher, Gary Bishop and Ronnie Best serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were his nieces and nephews: Janet Best Harmon, Patsy Best Harmon, Bernice Best Tucker, Brenda Bishop Ludwick, Larry Bishop, W.D. Cocanougher Jr., Jimmy Cocanougher, Bonnie Best Pillars and Mary Anne Best.

Memorial contributions may take the form of donations to Heritage Hospice, Inc., 120 Enterprise Drive, P.O. Box 1213, Danville, KY 40422.

CAROL DENNIS

Carol Joann Dennis, 75, of Harrodsburg, widow of Herbert Dennis, Jr. died Thursday, June 17, 2010 at her residence.

Born Feb. 5, 1935 in Mackville, she was the daughter of the late Clarence W. and Ruby A. Fowler Isham. She was a former waitress at Stone Manor Restaurant for many years, a retired cashier at Gateway and also was a private sitter. She was a member of the Cornishville Baptist Church.

She is survived by three sons, Steven Wayne Dennis, Mark Dennis and James Douglas Dennis, all of Harrodsburg; three daughters, Janet Carol Hardin, Sandra Gwen Coffman and Pamela Ann Kendrick, all of Harrodsburg; six sisters, Doris Dennis of Louisville, Jane Traynor of Midway, Kay Boswell Traynor of Springfield, Donna Harmon of Mackville, Betty Burton of Harrodsburg and Mary K Jones of Danville; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one step-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Bobby Allen Dennis; two brothers, Billy C. Isham and Jimmy R. Isham and one grandson: Richard Joseph Dennis.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 21, 2010 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Paul Readnour officiating. Burial was in the Peters Cemetery in Mackville with Mick Caudill, Rickey Spain, Sean Sanders, John Sanders, Daniel Miller and Chip Hartman serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Steve Darland, Angela Dawn Bottom, Ammie Jo Dennis, Anthony Dennis and Robert Dennis.

KELVIN DEVINE

Kelvin Lee Devine, 46, of Stanford, husband of Jo Ann Fox Devine died Sunday, June 20, 2010 at his residence.

Born Sept. 1, 1964 in Mercer County, he was the son of William B. Devine of Harrodsburg and Joyce Simpson Hill of Danville.

In addition to his wife and parents, Kelvin is survived by three sons, Eric Devine of Harrodsburg, Daniel and Brandon Fox both of Stanford; two daughters, Leann Dennis and Connie Simpson, both of Stanford; two brothers, George Devine of Harrodsburg and Keithy Devine of Danville; two sisters, Garnetta Benge and Sheila Lunsford, both of Junction City and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 25, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Jeremy James officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery with Daniel Fox, Johnathan Devine, Brandon Johnson, Harold Partin, Phillip Caudill, Aaron Moore and Brad Moore serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

JOSEPH FILIATREAU

Joseph Bernard Filiatreau, age 62, of 165 Fredericktown Road, Springfield, died at 2:59 p.m. Sunday, June 20, 2010 at U of L Hospital in Louisville.

Born Aug. 4, 1947 in Lebanon, he was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Rucker Filiatreau, May 4, 1970; his mother, Mary Eloise Auberry Filiatreau, Jan. 10, 1998; and a son, Joseph Edward “Jody” Filiatreau, April 24, 2008.

He was a 1965 graduate of Fredericktown High School, a 1967 graduate of St. Catharine College, a member of Council 4270 Knights of Columbus in Springfield and a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He was a butcher for many years, having owned The Burg Store for 10 years, The Meathouse for 27 years and was manager of IGA Meathouse for 10.5 years until his death.

He is survived by: one son, Jason (Joanna) Filiatreau of Loretto; three daughters, Robin (Lynn) Cochran and Jessica (Johnny) Baker, both of Mackville and Jenna Filiatreau of Springfield; four brothers, John Robert, Bill, Frank and Tom Filiatreau, all of Fredericktown; a sister, Mary Ellen Leachman of Fredericktown; a daughter-in-law, Tracy Reid of Lexington; and four grandchildren, Joseph Blake Baker, Alex, Kennedy and Jacob Cochran.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 25 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fredericktown with Rev. Chris Allegra officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield, where friends may call from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Pallbearers will be Greg Simms, Joey Auberry, Jimmy Grace, John “Hooker” Osbourn, Mark Spalding, Fred Boone, Joe Neel and Danny Logsdon.

Honorary pallbearers will be his four brothers.

Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

EULA FREEMAN

Eula J. Freeman, 74, of Harrodsburg, widow of Willie Roy Freeman, died Friday, June 18, 2010 at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington.

Born July 10, 1935 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Merritt and Martha Hatchell Downey. She was a retired Corning Glass and a Phillips Company employee and a caregiver. She was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFA.

Survivors include: a son, Roy Lynn (Carolyn) Freeman and a sister, Nellie Bugg, both of Harrodsburg; a granddaughter, Amber Lynn Ryan and a great-grandchild, Calvin Ryan.

She was preceded in death by three by siblings: Everett Downey, Georgia Downey and Pearl D. Tyler.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 22 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Terry Morrison officiating. Burial was in the Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville. Pallbearers were: Sonny Bryant, Tim Freeman, Perry Freeman, Roy Bugg, Kelly Bugg and Greg Newsome.

MARY GIBSON

Mary Thomas Gibson, 76, of Harrodsburg, widow of James Gibson, Jr. died Sunday, June 20, 2010 at Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born Nov. 11, 1933 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Rosie Moore Hardin. She was a retired housekeeper for the Bright Leaf Golf Resort in Harrodsburg and a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, James Michael Gibson of Harrodsburg and Garret Martin Gibson of Salvisa; four daughters, Sandra Medley of Danville, Karen Taylor of Mooreland, Teresa Laymon and Conda Adams both of Harrodsburg, 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m.., Thursday, June 24 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. Brad King officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery with her grandsons Clint Medley, Mike Medley, Dale Taylor, Josh Taylor, Damian Laymon and Brandon Adams serving as pallbearers.

Visitation Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

JAMES HURT

James R. Hurt, 76, of Champaign, IL, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at his residence.

Born on May 22, 1934 in Ashland, he was the son of the late Joseph and Martha Riggins Hurt. After graduating from Harrodsburg High School in 1952, he attended the University of Kentucky, was drafted and served in the U.S. Army as a flute and piccolo player in the 214th Army band in Alaska. While earning his Ph.D at Indiana University, Bloomington, he taught at Indiana University in Kokomo and then joined the faculty at the University of Illinois, where he taught from 1966 until his retirement in 2003. He taught at the University of Reading, England, as an exchange Professor and at St. Patrick’s College in Dublin, Ireland. He helped to found the Depot Theater in Urbana, IL, for which he wrote plays including “Walden: A Ceremony” and “Angel Band.”

Survivors include: his wife, Zohreh Hurt; three sons, Christopher (Janet Bryant) Hurt, Ross (Kena) Hurt, and Matthew (Tina) Hurt; a sister, Ann Fraley; a brother, David Hurt and three granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his step-mother, and twin brother, Joe.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 29, 2010 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Levis Faculty Center, 919 West Illinois St., Urbana, IL.

ANARAE LEFAU

Anarae Grace Lefau, 2, of Tooele, UT, died Saturday, June 19 at UK Children’s Hospital in Lexington.

A native of Hopkinsville, she was the daughter of Soofau M. and Nina Hall Lefau.

Survivors other than her parents include: her three sisters, Makinleigh Hall, Leilani and Sialei Lefau; maternal grandparents, Lanny (Stephanie) Hall of Lancaster and Katie (Randall) Hansen of Lehi, UT; paternal grandparents, Pesamino and Vaimalama Lefau of Laie, HI and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Goldie and Hobert Spurlock; a grandmother, Sheila Hamilton and a first cousin, Emma Lee Hall.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 24 at 1 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Lexington with Bishop Todd Hjorth officiating. Burial will occur at a later date at Harriman City Cemetery in Harriman, UT. Pallbearers will be her father and uncles, Stacey Hall, Marc Hall and Steve Robbins.

Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5 to 9 p.m. at LeCompte-Johnson-Taylor Funeral Home in Frankfort.

OSCAR MCRAY

Oscar Emerson McRay, 85, widower of Myrtle Bugg McRay, died Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Stanford.

Born Jan. 7, 1925 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Oscar Elmer and Amanda Black McRay. He served in the Army during World War II and was a retired Corning Glass employee. He was a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church, VFW and the NRA.

Survivors include: three daughters, Rita (Kerry) Anness of Harrodsburg, Dixie Walls and Kathy (Bob) Clark both of Burgin and one son, Gary (Sandy) McRay of Camden, OH; one sister, Naomi Anderson of IN; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchidren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, June 20 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with John Hockersmith officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery with military rites.

Pallbearers were: Kyle Anness, Rob Clark, Stuart Woods, Andrew Curtsinger, Taylor Darland and Colton Darland.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the charity of one’s choice.

MICHAEL MORGAN

Michael Wayne Morgan, 56, of Stanford, formerly of Garrard County, died June 18, 2010, at his home.

He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Lorie Smith Morgan. He was born in Rockcastle County. He was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include: his wife, Ethel Morgan; a son and a daughter, Joseph Wayne (Deloris) Morgan and Miletha (Scott) Miller, both of Lancaster; two step-sons, Bo (Heather) Hopkins of Crab Orchard and Mark (Vivian) Hopkins of Lancaster; four grandchildren, Dustin, Diana, Christian and Autumn; four brothers, Jerry (Angel) Morgan of Lancaster, and Calvin (Pauline) Morgan, Dallas Morgan and Paul (Jean) Morgan, all of Brodhead; five sisters, Helen (Robbie) Tuggle of Lancaster, Effie Mae Lissel of Crab Orchard, Jaunitia Adams of Lancaster, Ann (Gilbert) Tuggle of Lancaster and Barbara Sue Stinnett of Burgin; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Monday, June 21, officiated by Pastor Bobby Tolson at the Spurlin Funeral Home Chapel in Lancaster.

Active pallbearers were Dustin Miller, Darrell Tuggle, Warren Lee Morgan, Richard Stinnett, Bobby West and Eric Bullock.

Honorary pallbearers were Robbie Tuggle, Troy Tuggle, Gilbert Tuggle, Anthony Lissel and Derris West.
