TERRI HURLEY

Burgin woman dies at family hayride

A family hayride at a Mercer County farm Saturday night turned tragic when the tractor jackknifed and overturned the trailer, throwing five people to the ground and fatally injuring one woman.

Terry Lynn Hurley, 44, fell between the tractor and trailer and was ruin over by the trailer. She was transported to The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 9:10 by Mercer County Deputy Coroner Chuck Bugg. He ruled the cause of death as blunt trauma to the head and torso.

Four others thrown from the trailer were taken to the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville where they were treated for minor injuries and released, according to Kentucky State Trooper Chris Lanham. He said Hurley was on the hayride with about 30 other people at her family’s farm on 447 Buster Pike.

David Justice of Grundy, VA was driving the tractor. “He apparently tired to negotiate a hill that was a bit too steep,” Lanham said. As the tractor was pulling the trailer back down the hill, Lanham said it jack-knifed.

The case remains under investigation, and Lanham said charges could be filed in the case, depending on the outcome of a toxicology screen performed on Justice.

Hurley was the daughter of Harold and Patricia An Lively Hurley of Mercer County. She was an employee of the American Water Company and a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church.
