MARILYN SMITH

Marilyn Cleoda Smith, 83, of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born May 12, 1927 in Insull, she was the daughter of the late Alexander Luther and Myrtle Elizabeth Reed Smith.

Survivors include: four sisters, Virginia Louise Kelly of Lexington, Gloria Elizabeth Irby of Satsuma, AL, Joy Birch of Harrodsburg and Marjorie Ann Grout of Knoxville, TN; two brothers, Alexander Luther Smith Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA and David Smith of Straight Creek and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by a sister, Mary Sue Locke and a half sister, Jennie Jewell; four brothers, Brian E., Robert Bruce, Alfred E. and Beauford R. Smith.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, July 14 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Dr. Robert DeFoor and Wayne Spivey officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: David Smith, Kerry Anness, Al Haupt, Byron Asher and Michael Kelly.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Harrodsburg Baptist Foundation.

BETTY TRAYNER

Betty Meredith Trayner, 75, Harrodsburg, wife of Ralph E. Trayner, died Saturday, July 10, 2010 at her home.

Born Nov. 21, 1934 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late J. T. and Fayrene Roberts Meredith. She was a homemaker and also owned and operated Betty’s Fabric Shop in Versailles for several years. She was a member of the Harrodsburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School, Bible School and was a Choir member for many years.

Survivors other than her husband include: two sons, Chip Trayner, and Mark Trayner both of Harrodsburg and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 13, at Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Robert L. Barton officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Seth Trayner, Shane Trayner, Brian Kelty, Bobby Catlett, Johnny Preston, Damon Preston, and Dan Walls.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Alzheimer’s Association, 801 S. Limestone, Suite E, Lexington, KY 40508-4048 or the Mercer County Humane Society, 132 N. Main St., Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

A. J. TRUE JR.

A. J. True, Jr., 81, of Harrodsburg, widower of Maggie Wheeler True, died Sunday, July 11, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Sept. 10, 1928 he was the son of the late Arthur J. and Isabelle Harp True, Sr.

He was a lifetime farmer who served the City of Burgin both as a volunteer police officer and fireman. He later became a full-time fire fighter for the City of Harrodsburg and subsequently transferred to the Harrodsburg Police Department, where he was serving as Assistant Chief at the time of his retirement. After a “short retirement”, A. J. joined the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department, serving over a decade as a Deputy Sheriff and Court Bailiff. He served with the Kentucky National Guard and was a longtime member of the Shawnee Run Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one son, A. J. (Carrie) True, III of Harrodsburg; two daughters, Trudy (Earl) Kleckner of Danville and Sandy (Gary) Thomas of Harrodsburg; one brother, Laurel (Poppie) (Alice) True of Shelbyville, six grandchildren and one nephew.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Dr. Phil Yates officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery with Gary Thomas, Earl Kleckner Sr., Ernie Kelty, Mike Burus, Joe Wright, Guthrie True and Donnie Webb serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were deputies from the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office and all Law Enforcement Officers.

Contributions may take the form of donations to the American Cancer Society.

A. D. VANARSDALL

A. D. VanArsdall, 85, of Harrodsburg, husband of Ima Jean Darland, died Monday, July 12, 2010 at his home.

Born Feb. 7, 1925 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Alford and Delilah (Vandivier) VanArsdall. He was a retired farmer, an Army veteran of WWII, and attended the Baptist Church.

Survivors other than his wife include: two sisters, Isa Vena League and Viola Rose, both of Harrodsburg; one brother, Paul VanArsdall of Harrodsburg and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and Willard VanArsdall.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, July 15 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Bro. James Harley officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers are: Carl and Alford VanArsdall, Willard Hamm, Charles Johnstone, Darrell Waterfield and Randy Baxter. Honorary bearers will be: Jerry Britton, Ricky VanArsdall, and Carroll Montgomery.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 14 from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

GEORGIA WEBB

Georgia Margaret Webb, 89, wife of Orland Webb of Harrodsburg, died Thursday, July 8, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born March 25, 1921 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late George and Emma Ball Sexton. She was a homemaker and a member of the Shawnee Run Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons: Donald Webb and Robert (Jennifer) Webb, both of Mercer County; two sisters, Martha Bennett of Burgin and Jo Ann Dexter of Danville; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 12, 2010 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Lester Tirey and Odis Clark officiating. Burial was in the Shawnee Run Baptist Church Cemetery with Bill Minton, Chuck Adams, Kasey Webb, Bob Carpenter, Jerry Royalty, Harold Moore, Clifford Houp, and Don Ellis serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were: Joe Slaven, Barry Sexton, Donnie Cocanougher, James Reed, Gene Motley, Juan Vasquez and Tony Warner.

Memorial contributions may take the form of donations to the Gideon’s International, P.O. 176, Harrodsburg, KY 40330

GODBEY WHITEHOUSE

Godbey Whitehouse, 87, of 480 Boone Trail died Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at his residence.

Born Feb. 10, 1923 in Perryville, he was the son of the late Leslie and Rosie Lee Alford Whitehouse. He graduated from Perryville High School and was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Danville where he served as a deacon for many years. He was on the Board of Directors of the Boyle Co. Farm Bureau and was a retired salesman for Louisville Seed Company.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Arnold Whitehouse and one son, Kenneth Ray (Tina) Whitehouse Sr.; two grandsons, four great-grandchildren and two special friends and caregivers, Barbara Rose and Susie Wofford.

He was predeceased by eight brothers, Ezra, Clarence, Bob, Alfred, J. L., Marshall, Arthur Ray and Stanley Whitehouse and two sisters, Sadie Litton and Bertha Shepperson.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 10 at Stith Funeral Home in Danville with Rev. Tim Mathis and Rev. Albert Gisler officiating. Burial was in Danville Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were: Dennis Whitehouse, Milton Whitehouse, Gene Litton, Earl Campbell, Tim Blevins and W. H. Furr. Honorary pallbearers were: Madison, Tyler, Ashley and Megan Whitehouse and Godbey’s Sunday School Class.

Memorials are suggested to Heritage Hospice.

CHARLES YATES

Charles Yates, 80, of Vista, CA, husband of Lottie Francis Taylor, died June 28, 2010.

Born June 22, 1930 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late Mattie Curd and Charles Yates. A graduate of West Side High School, he attended Philander Smith College in Little Rock, AR. He left school in 1950 to join the U.S. Air Force. He served in both the Korean War and the Vietname War and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Survivors other than his wife include: two daughters, Charlene Linton and Wilma Yates; a brother, Albert Bess of Paris; one granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, July 8 at the Hope Church of the Nazarene in Vista, CA with Matthew Palm officiating. Burial was at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, CA with full military honors. William Payne, Terry Johnson, Gary Malcolm, Richard Weaver, Robert Hird and Alan Owens served as pallbearers. Honorary bearers were members of the Camp Pendleton Men’s Club. Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary in San Diego, CA was in charge of arrangements.

VEVIA BEST

Vevia Sue Best, 54, of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, July 17, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born July 22, 1955 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late James E. and Marie Isham Best. She was a retired state employee and a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include: one brother, James E. (Elizabeth) Best, Jr. of Paducah; a nephew, John W. Best; an aunt, Pauline Votaw and several cousins.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 19 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel, with burial in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Donnie and Donovan Bast, Michael Brown, Tony Hayden, Brent McGinnis and Ronnie Lyons.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Heart Association.

ANNA CARTER

Anna Carter, 83, of Miller Avenue in Lancaster died Thursday July 16, 2010.

Born in Garrard County, she was the daughter of the late Meredith and Ruth Phillips Combs.

She was retired from Eastern State Hospital.

Survivors include: a daughter, Ruth Ann Robinson of Lancaster; a brother, Robert Combs of Lexington; sisters, Evelyn Ball of Lancaster, Veda Combs of Harrodsburg and Margaret Cordier of Georgetown, Texas ; two grandchildren; and a son-in-law, John Duff of Georgetown.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlotte “Micki” Duff.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 19, at the Spurlin Funeral Home in Danville.

MATTIE SANDERS

Mattie Lee Chesser Sanders, 90, of Danville, died Thursday, July 15, 2010.

Born April 24, 1920 in Washington Co., she was the daughter of Estil and Audrey Carey Chesser and the widow of Herman Lee Sanders.

She was known as “Bobba” by her family. She attended First Baptist Church.

Mattie is survived by: one daughter, Mary Lou (Dan) Elkin, Danville; two grandchildren, Jayne Bean (Nels) Hunstad and James Douglas (Suzanne) Bean; five great-grandchildren, Logan Chapman (Emily) Greene, Benjamin Tyler (Brittany Terrill) Greene, Kayleigh Alexis Hunstad, Chapman Douglas Bean and Whitney Leigh Bean; a loving aunt, Nancy Carey; two sisters, Ethel Mae Sagrecy and Hazel Begley and two brothers, William and Harold Chesser.

A graveside service was held Monday, July 19, at Burgin cemetery with Rev. Ken Whitehouse officiating.

Pallbearers were Roy Lee Sanders, Nels Hunstad, Doug and Chapman Bean, Tony, Logan and Tyler Greene.

Honorary pallbearers were Dr. David Overstreet, Dr. Dan Moran, Dr. John Horn, Dr. James Duncan and Dr. Richard Nallinger.

Memorial donations may be made to Heritage Hospice where Sue Jones was her loving volunteer.

RAY COMBS

Ray Combs, 70, of Waynesburg, passed away on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Lexington.

Ray spent his last days with his brother Dean in Lexington, to whom he was very close as they were both in Vietnam together. Ray was born on Tue, Jan 30, 1940 in Lincoln County to the late Sherman & Mary Napier Combs.

Ray proudly served his county in the Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was awarded the 3 O/S Bars, Expert (M-14) Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Metal, Vietnam Service Medal with 5 Bronze Stars, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device. He was a member of the Lexington VFW #68, the American Legion Post #345 in Stanford, and the Disabled American Veterans. He returned to Lexington to work for Southern Ice Company and then as a glazier for Happy the Glass Man & Onan Glass Company. Ray will also be remembered for his love for the Kentucky Wildcats.

Ray leaves behind: his daughters, Sheila (Terry) Lilly of Loves Park, IL, and Deanna Combs of KY; brothers, Dean (Johnny) Combs of Lexington, Gary (Vickie) Combs of Harrodsburg, Doug (Jean) Combs of Waynesburg, Gene (Linda) Combs of Lexington; sisters, Faye McConnell of Delaware, OH, Linda (Donald) McKinney of Danville, Sharon Singleton and Audrey Combs, both of Stanford, Freda (Walter) Trent of Lancaster and Carolyn (Jerry) Petrey of Crab Orchard; three grandchildren, Julie Singh, Julian King and Amy Flaningam; eight great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Carlos and Clayton Combs, sisters Francis Smith and Lessa Combs.

Services for Ray were held Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at the Barnett & Demrow Funeral Home in Waynesburg with Bro. Stan Vickers officiating. Burial was in Double Springs Cemetery with military honors by Caswell Saufley Post #18.

Austin Combs, Chris Benard, Rodney Goode, Darrell and Gene Smith, Zack Banks, Lynn and Chris Petrey served as pallbearers. VFW Post #68, American Legion Post #345 and Disabled American Veteran's served as the honorary pallbearers.

DEAN FERGUSON

Dean William Ferguson, 54, died Saturday, July 10, 2010.

He was born February 17, 1956 in Lexington, to the late Roger and Karen Rains Ferguson.

He is survived by: his sister, Lisa Day, Lexington; his brother, Doug (Leslie) Ferguson, Harrodsburg; niece, Lauren Ferguson; and nephews, Chris Ferguson and Connor Day.

A gathering of family and friends was held Saturday, July 17, at the Clark Legacy Center in Brannon Crossing in Jessasmine County.
