JAMES GOODLETT

James Cecil Goodlett, 77, of Lawrenceburg, died Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Heritage Hall Health Care Center.

He was born in Anderson County to the late Manson and Dorothy Robinson Goodlett.

He was a carpenter with Orville Davis Construction Co.; and a member of Alton Baptist Church.

He is survived by: one son, Troy Wright, TN; one grandson, Hunter Wright, Tennessee; five sisters, Frances (Roger) Morrison, Hilda (David) Winters, Connie Goodlett, Carolyn (Roger) Durr, all of Lawrenceburg, and Linda (Larry) Gillis, Frankfort; five brothers, Robert (Georgia) Goodlett, Maurice (Janice) Goodlett, Manson (Sharon) Goodlett Jr., Gene Thomas (Tammy) Goodlett, all of Lawrenceburg, and Larry Wayne (Sondra) Goodlett, Salvisa; and several nieces and nephews.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Kathy Goodlett, and three brothers, Johnny Wesley Goodlett, William Carroll Goodlett, and Ronnie Lewis Goodlett.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 20, at the Gash Memorial Chapel in Lawrenceburg. Burial followed in Sand Spring Cemetery.

Casketbearers were Marty Goodlett, Mark Withers, Brian Durr, Jason Goodlett, Wayne Goodlett, Gene Goodlett, William Michael Durr and Lee Sayre.

Honorary bearers were Mary Elizabeth Logan, Barbara Sayre, and his brothers.

VELMA OWEN

Velma Owen, 71, of Salvisa, died Wednesday, July 14, at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born March 31, 1939 in Owenton, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Viola (Steger) Owen. She retired from the Kentucky Department of Finance and was a member of Pine Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include: close friends Linda and John Hockersmith of Salvisa and several cousins.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 17 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Rev. Johnny Hockersmith III officiating Burial was in the Owenton Cemetery.

NANCY PINKSTON

Nancy Lutitia Benge Pinkston, 69, widow of Ralph M. Pinkston, died Monday, July 19, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born May 5, 1941 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Martin Jackson and Mary Elizabeth Grimes Benge. She was a homemaker and a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church.

Survivors include: her daughter, Yuvonne (Dee) Wesley of Harrodsburg and four sons, Ronnie McElroy and Donnie McElroy, both of Danville, Andrew McElroy of Lincoln County, and Cecil McElroy of Hustonville; one grandson-in-law, Jamie Benham, 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her son, James McElroy; one great-grandson, Levi Brummett and one brother, Louis Benge.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 22 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with David Terwillieer officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery with Jamie Brummett, Chad Pinkston, Chris Cox, Justin Durham, Ronnie McElroy, and Donnie McElroy serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Wright, Jamie Benham and Anthony Durham.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 7 a.m. Thursday at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.

GRETA CARMICKLE

Greta Carmickle, 41, of Versailles, wife of Brad Carmickle, died Saturday, July 24, 2010.

She was born in Versailles, to Glenn Guy of Burgin, and the late Phyllis Pulliam Guy.

Mrs. Carmickle was a receptionist at the V.C.A. She also attended Versailles Baptist Church and was Chairperson for the Relay for Life, Woodford County Chapter.

Besides her husband and father, she is survived by: two sons, Adam and Aaron Carmickle, both of Versailles; and one sister, Cathy Lowe, of Harrodsburg.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Alan Guy.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 27, at the Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill, with Bro. Victor Slatten officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

LOUISE CHESSER

Louise Beavers Chesser, 77, of 276 Jenkins Lane, Willisburg, and at the time of her death, had been a resident of Sansbury Care Center at St. Catharine since April, died at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at Spring View Hospital in Lebanon.

She was a 1950 graduate of Willisburg High School, where she graduated as class valedictorian and had perfect attendance for 12 years of school. She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Anderson County.

She is survived by: one son, Martin Leo (Sharon) Chesser of Harrodsburg; three daughters, Angie (Travis) Yaste of Willisburg, Tammy (Timmy) Baker of Salvisa and Rhonda Phillips of Springfield; one sister, Doris Stine of Willisburg; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Born Feb. 2, 1933 in Washington County, she was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Liza Mae Pinkston Beavers; her first husband, James Charles “J.C.” Borders in 1958; her second husband, Leo Chesser on Aug. 27, 1999; a son, Joey Borders in 2006; and a brother, Leroy Beavers in 1995.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 24, at the Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield with Bro. Bobby Chesser officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in Willisburg.

Pallbearers were Vince Travis, Mitch Stacy, Ronnie Marcum, David McCullough, Todd Hill and Wesley Hill.

Honorary pallbearers were Billy and Bobby Cheser.

Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MAGGIE CORNETT

Maggie Cornett, 26, of Kings Mountain died Saturday, July 24, 2010.

Born October 11, 1983, in Danville, she was the daughter of Charles Lewis Boswell of Harrodsburg, and Cindi Boswell of S.C.

She was a homemaker and had a great love for the outdoors. She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.

Survivors include: her husband, Chris Cornett; three daughters, Cynthia Cornett, Jessica Cornett, and Elizabeth Cornett, all of Kings Mountain; two brothers, Jeffery Caldwell and Jacob Caldwell, both of TN; two sisters, Ann Caldwell of Danville and Paige Cornett, of Kings Mountain; four nieces and one nephew.

Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday July 28, at the Spurlin Funeral Home in Stanford. Officiating was Bro. Roger Stevens. Burial was in Double Springs Cemetery

Casketbearers were Corey Witt, Melvin Cornett, Eric Dean Cornett, Tony Short, Billy Foley, Timmy Cornett, and Scott Taylor.

CHRISTINE DALEY

Christine Rachels Daley, 92, of Statesboro, GA, formerly of Harrodsburg, died July 18 at Brown’s Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Statesboro.

Born in Warthen/ Washington County, GA June 5, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Florence Rachels.

She was very active as member of the Beechwood Baptist and Hurstbourne Baptist Churches consecutively serving as Women’s Sunday School teacher, member of the Women’s Missionary Society, and one of the earliest pianist as a charter member of Hurstbourne. She was also a longtime member of the Board Wives’ Club of the Kentucky Baptist Convention.

Mrs. Daley is survived by four sons: Gil (Carolyn)Daley of Lexington, Chauncey Mikell Daley of Louisville, Dale Thomas Daley of New York, NY; and Phillip (Lydia) Daley of Newington, GA; one brother, Elroy T. Rachels of Warthen, GA, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Chauncey R. Daley, Jr., three brothers, J. M. Rachels, Fred Rachels and Veasy Rachels and three sisters, Winnilou, Pinkie, and Mary Rachels.

Funeral services was held Friday, July 23 at Newington Baptist Church, with family members sharing and officiating.

Burial followed at the Newington City Cemetery.

Pallbearerswere: Tommy Rachels, Jay Rachels, Johnny Rachels, Gil Lane Daley, Bryan Daley, and Drew Daley.

Memorials may be made to the Gideon Bible Society as well as to Ogeechee Area Hospice. Friends may sign the online register book at www.joineranderson.com Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home Screven Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

HAROLD KURTZ

Harold J. “Punchie” Kurtz, 71, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Ephraim McDowell Hospital in Danville.

Harold was born January 27, 1939 in Mercer County to the late Thomas Price Kurtz and Mary Susan Giles.

He was a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church and a member of Teamsters local 651. He was a veteran of the United States Army and also a Kentucky Colonel. He was very interested in genealogy and enjoyed his work with the Garrard County Historical Society. He compiled several years of Garrard County census records into book form. He especially enjoyed being with his family and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include: his wife, Jamesetta Metcalfe Kurtz of Lancaster; one son, Jeff (Tammy) Kurtz of Richmond, one daughter, Jana (Ande) Godsey of Lancaster; eight sisters, Vera Patterson of Harrodsburg, Alice Stocker of Danville, Edith Matthews of and Juanita Wright, both of Louisville,, Mary Underwood and Ida Hurt, both of Lancaster, Norma DeVore of Stanford, Betty (Bobby) Wooldridge of Danville; one brother, Clell (Phyllis) Kurtz of Greenwood, IN; three brothers-in-law, Johnny (Linda) Metcalfe of Lancaster, Jody Metcalfe and Jack Metcalfe, both of Stanford; four grandchildren, Megan, Matthew and Timothy Kurtz of Richmond and Katrina Godsey of Lancaster.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Max Kurtz, Bob Kurtz and Fred Kurtz and his sisters Velma Carter and Dollie Graham.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 23, at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Lancaster with Rev. Everett Priddy and Rev. Mark Kurtz officiating. Burial was in Lancaster Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jody Metcalfe, Steve Wooldridge, Rick Hurt, Tommy Stocker, Max Kurtz and John Carter.

His many nieces and nephews served as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be directed to the Garrard County Historical Society.

ARTHUR HUFFMAN

Arthur C. Huffman, 89, of Harrodsburg, died Monday, July 26, 2010 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born Dec. 29, 1920 in Cornishville, he was the son of the late James R. and Lillie Mae Foster Huffman. He attended Centre College and the University of Kentucky and worked in the hotel industry in Washington , D.C.

Survivors include two brothers, Bruce Huffman of Harrodsburg and Harold Huffman of Lexington and several nieces and nephews.

A private grave side service will be held, there will be no visitation.

Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

FRANCES PEARSON

Frances Lucille Chilton Pearson, 74, of Salvisa, wife of the late Rev. William Pearson, died Saturday, July 24, 2010, at the home of her son.

She was born in Mercer County to the late Horace and Sadie Shelton Chilton.

She was a member of Claylick United Methodist Church; a homemaker; and a 1954 graduate of Salvisa High School.

She is survived by; two daughters, Reva Pearson, Fort Thomas, KY and Mary (Ric) Estes, Somerset; one son, Rev. Musial (Joyce), Crestwood; two sisters, Onita (Ralph) Cox and Lillie Mae (Billy) Bottom, both of Lawrenceburg; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and four nephews, and five great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 27, at the Claylick United Methodist Church with Rev. Musial Pearson and Ric Estes officiating. Burial was in Hebron Cemetery.

KENNETH PHILLIPS

Dr. Kenneth S. Phillips, 84, husband of Wanda Joan Phillips, died Tues, July 20, 2010.

Born in Mercer County, he was a son of the late Roy Phillips and Harriett and Harry Bland.

A graduate of the University of Kentucky, he completed medical school and his Orthopedic Residency at the University of Louisville.

Dr. Phillips was an orthopaedic surgeon for 37 years in Lexington where he practiced at what was then Good Samaritan Hospital. He served on the Board Of American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He was well liked by his patients and had a special way with children. In 1971, he shared an office with the late W. K. Massie MD and David B. Stevens, MD. In the ensuing years, he started holding clinics at area hospitals, starting at Woodford Memorial Hospital, Versailles and also at Kings Daughters Hospital in Frankfort. From 1974-1978, he moved his practice to Frankfort. In 1978, he moved his practice back to Lexington, where he shared an office with Kooros Sajadi, M.D. and then started holding clinics in Georgetown and Paris Hospitals. In the later years, he joined the staff of Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. He retired in 1996, where he has enjoyed several years at his home on Lake Cumberland.

During his career, Dr. Phillips was a member of various Orthopaedic Associations and Societies throughout the country and Kentucky. He also served as a medical consultant for the Social Security Disability.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by: his brother, Roy Phillips II, Sterling, IL; mother-in-law, Sylvetta Wright, New Albany, IN; and sister-in-law, Helen (Ralph) Hornickel, Locinia, IN.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Phillips.

Funeral service was held Friday, July 23, at Milward-Southland. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Floyds Knobs, IN.

HOMER ROBINSON

Homer Robinson, 69, died Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at his residence. Born April 14, 1941 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Haskell Marion and Hattie Pearl Puckett Robinson. He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church and was a retired mechanic having owned East Side Auto Service for many years.

Survivors include: three sons, David (Shelly) Robinson of Danville, Christopher (Daniel Pogue) Robinson of Ohio, and Mark (Heather Hume) Robinson of Harrodsburg; one daughter, Debby Combs of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Nellie Rose Holderman of Mercer County and Lillie Mae Birch of Athens, GA; his fiancée, Alexa Drury of Mercer County, five grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Baxter Robinson and James Marion Robinson and two sisters, Opal Louise Giles and Bonnie Lois Trimble.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 24, 2010 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Harold Best officiating. Burial was in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery with Delaine Riley, E.J. Riley, Steve Long, Jeremy Bottoms, Ronnie Robinson, Mike Birch, Ralph Rogers, Tommy Goodlett, and Terrill Simpson serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Connie Robinson, Sac Hume and James Carroll.
