JAMES SCOTT

James Archie Scott, 94, died Saturday, July 23, 2010. Born in Pike County, he attended Duke University, Morehead State University, and the University of Kentucky. For most of his life he was self-employed, owning a chain of shoe stores in Dallas, TX. He was a faithful member of the Church of Christ serving as a deacon, teacher, and occasional preacher.

He is survived by two daughters, Sandra Scott of Burgin and Pat Scott of Lancaster; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Nettie Scott; a son, James A. Scott, Jr.; sisters Glenys Crozier and Evelyn Singleton, and brother Jack Scott.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 27 at the Mercer Church of Christ with Rick Leach officiating. Burial was in the Blue Grass Memorial Gardens.

MARY SEXTON

Mary Rose Sexton, 89, of Harrodsburg, died Friday, July 23, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born June 29, 1921 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late George and Julia Jenkins Sexton. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by several cousins.

Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 28 at the Spring Hill Cemetery with Bro. Lewis Walters officiating.

Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WALLACE SHEPERSON

Wallace Leslie Sheperson, 89, of Harrodsburg, husband of Betty Hill Sheperson, died Sunday, July 25, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born Nov. 6, 1920 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late James and Addie Owens Sheperson. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, a farmer, the owner of the B & S Grocery and a member of the Bohon Church of Christ.

Survivors besides his wife include: three step-children, Bill Hill of Harrodsburg, Betty Jo (Chris) Richmond of Maryland and Beverly (Dannie) Goodpaster of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Mollie Carey of Lexington and Isabell Cummins of Tennessee; six step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Sam and Robert Sheperson and two sisters, Lorain Burns and Sada Carey.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 28 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Julius Hoban and Rev. Al Gisler officiating. Burial with military Rites was in Spring Hill Cemetery with Kelly Bugg, Gerald Sheperson, Bruce Carey, Jerry Gray, Jim Burns and Billy Wickersham serving as pallbearers and his nieces serving as honorary pallbearers.

KEEGAN SOUTHERS

Keegan Scot Southers, one year old infant, died Sunday, July 25, 2010, at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

He was the son of Bruce and Julie Southers of Hebron.

Survivors other than his parents include: a sister, Fiona Southers and twin brother Wyatt Southers; grandparents Bill and Sheila Southers of Harrodsburg, Marcia Swiger of Elsmere and Mel Gerwe of Crestview Hills; Uncle Barry Southers of West Chester, OH and Aunt Gina Gerwe of Villa Hills.

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, July 29 followed by A Celebration of Life Service at 4 p.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 2718 Dixie Highway, Crestview Hills. Burial will be Friday at Highland Cemetery in Ft. Mitchell.

Linnemann Family Funeral Homes and Cremation Center is in charge of arrangements.

HANSEL TINGLE

Hansel "Bounce" Tingle, 83, died Sunday July 18, 2010 at his residence in Raywick.

He is survived by: his wife, Mabel Tingle of Raywick; one daughter, Julie Tingle of Raywick; two brothers, Cleo Tingle of Louisville and Albert Tingle Jr. of Bloomfield; two sisters, Edna Sullivan of Lebanon and Beulah Lake of Harrodsburg; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service for Hansel "Bounce" Tingle was conducted Thursday, July 22, at the Campbell DeWitt Funeral Home in Lebanon with burial in Old Liberty Cemetery.

EDWARD TURPIN

The Rev. Edward Wayne “Buddy” Turpin, 59, husband of Lana Stratton Turpin, died Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

Born March 30, 1951 in Boyle County, he was the son of Gladys Lucille Preston Turpin of Harrodsburg and the late Edward Arvis Turpin. He was the pastor of the Perryville Church of God.

Survivors other than his wife and mother include: one son, Joey Wayne Turpin of Harrodsburg; three daughters, Valerie (Paul) Stratton of Parksville, Chastity (David) McLemore of Harrodsburg and Jenny Lu (Lee) Stratton of Mitchellsburg; two brothers, Gary Scott Turpin and Deron Reed Turpin, both of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Brenda Kay Jones and Regina Darlene Turpin, both of Harrodsburg; seven grandchildren, one great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy Allen Turpin.

Funeral services were conducted July 27 at the Perryville Church of God with the Revs. Terry Orcutt, James Byrd, Larry Holbrook, Floying Thompson and Dan Carr officiating. Burial was in Parksville Cemetery with Mike Vandivier, Mike Stratton, Daryl Catlett, Bobby Catlett, Leonard Chumbley, Don Garland and Lynn Moss serving as active pallbearers. The men of Perryville Church of God served as Honorary Pallbearers.

BLANCHE ALSIP

Blanche N. Alsip, 98, of Harrodsburg, widow of Forest Alsip, died Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at her residence.

Born Nov. 17, 1911 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Hansford and Iva Turner Newby. She was employed by the Kenton County Board of Education, where she taught school and retired after 32 years of service. She was a graduate of the Cornishville High School and Eastern Kentucky University. She was a cheerleading sponsor for seven years, coached seventh and eighth grade basketball for one year, received a certificate of merit for teachers, a life membership to the PTA, sponsored the spelling bee in the Kenton County school system and was a member of the Retired Teachers of Northern Kentucky. She was a member of the Bruner’s Chapel Baptist Church. She was a former teacher of the Fedelis Sunday School class for 17 years, taught senior citizen’s bible study class for five years, a former member of the Bethel Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for 20 years.

She is survived by nine nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, James H. Newby and three sisters, Zelma Dean, Alma Burkhead and Mary Riley.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 31 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. David Crowe and Mike Crain officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery with Brent Newby, Jerry Newby, Robert Prather, Lynn Crain, George Seng and Ronnie Patton serving as pallbearers.

GARY DAWSON

Gary Dawson was called to his eternal rest on July 29, 2010 at 2:34 am at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville Kentucky, after a long illness.

Gary was the son of Charles Dawson Sr. and Hattie Dawson.

He was employed for 39 years at the Caldwell Stones Company and the last five years with the Mercer Stone Company.

He is survived by: his wife of 38 years, Camille Dawson; one daughter, Miss Gay Dawson; two sons, Kurtis Dawson and Gary Dawson, all of Danville; four brothers, Charles Dawson Jr., Kenneth Dawson, and Clifford Dawson, all of Danville and Tony (Karen) Dawson of Lexington; three sisters, Leitha Dawson, Janice Dawson and Cassandra Smith, all of Danville; six grandchildren; two uncles, Sterling (Juanita) Warner, Nicholasville and William “Billy” (the late Minnie) Warner, Danvill; two sister-in-law’s, Linda (the late Ben) Kinley, and Brenda Ford, Danvill; two brother-in-law’s, Jerry (Sedaria) Ford, Harrodsburg and Larry (the late Geraldine) Harris of Winston Salem, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, one infant daughter Marie Dawson, one infant grandson Jayden Dawson, and one brother Frederick Dawson.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, August 3, at the First Baptist Church in Danville. Burial was in Hilldale Cemetery.

Smith-Jackson Funeral Home in Danville is in charge of arrangements.

AMY DEMAREE

Amy Elizabeth Demaree, 94, of Louisville, formerly of Harrodsburg, widow of Robert K. Demaree, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010 at her home.

Born Sept. 3, 1915 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Lee O. and Maude (McGinnis) Million. She was a homemaker and a member of the Beargrass Christian Church and was a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church before moving to Louisville.

Survivors include: a daughter, Patsy Demaree Middleton of Louisville and a son, Robert Lee Demaree of Louisville; one granddaughter, Wendy Demaree (Tim) Flowers.

She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Janet Carolyn Demaree.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Mark Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers are: Glendon Demaree, Bob Peyton, Huntley Royalty, Tim Flowers, Howard Flowers, Bill Ward and Phillip Dadisman.

Visitation will be Wednesday, 5-8 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Harrodsburg Christian Church, 305 South Main Street, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

EDNA EDWARDS

Edna Ison Edwards, 98, of Ashland, died Saturday, July 24, 2010, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

Edna was born May 18, 1912, in Harrodsburg to the late Joshua Smalley Ison and Dora Worley Ison.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Prentice Edwards, in 1975; and her brother, Lee Taylor Ison.

Edna was a homemaker, a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ashland, an active member of Methodist Women, a 50-year member of the Friends of the Children and a member of the DAR.

Surviving are: one son, James Prentice (Libby) Edwards Jr., of Sarasota, FL; one grandson, Robert Lee (Angela) Edwards of Georgetown; and one great-granddaughter, Jessica Anne Edwards. Other survivors include nephews Dr. Lee Andrew (Jean) Ison of Mid West City, OK, Thomas (Susan) Edwards of Memphis, TN and Goebel R. (Donna) of Hopkinsville.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel officiated by the Rev. Don Young. Entombment was in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.

Contributions in Edna’s name may be given to the Friends of the Children, P.O. Box 1128, Ashland, KY 41105-1128 or First United Methodist Church, 1811 Carter Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

RUTH GOLDSTEIN

Ruth Browning Snyder Goldstein, 84, died Friday, July 30, 2010, at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman, GA.

Born on Sept. 20, 1925 she was the daughter of the late Hobart and Maud Browning of Burgin.

Survivors include: two sisters; two grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia (Virgie) Doler, and one brother, H. G. Browning.

A ceremony celebrating Ruth’s life will be held in Anna Maria, FL at a future date.

CHARLES GRIFFIN

Charles Morgan Griffin, age 61, husband of Myrtle Ann Meaux Griffin, died Monday, August 2, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born June 12, 1949 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of Emma Morgan Griffin of Harrodsburg and the late George Griffin. He was a 1968 graduate of Harrodsburg High School, a former employee at Hobart in Danville through the SDS Services, McDonalds of Harrodsburg and most recently he was a greeter at Wal-Mart in Harrodsburg and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was a member of the St. Peter AME Church and attended the Centennial Baptist Church in Harrodsburg.

Survivors other than his wife and mother include: two sons, Joshua Allen and Latemus Meaux, both of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Yvonne Griffin of Chattanooga, TN and Sarah Griffin of Harrodsburg; three brothers, Gregory (Cindy) Griffin of Springfield, OH, Larry (Jane) Griffin of Columbus, OH and William Griffin of Harrodsburg; mother-in-law, Ruby Mae Meaux; one great-great- aunt, Mary Jackson of Cleveland, OH and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6 at the Centennial Baptist Church with Elder J.D. Short, III, Rev. Ralph Smith, Rev. Kelvin Robinson, Rev. Cecil Napier and Sister Sherry Greene officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Active pallbearers are: Glen Walker, Will Jones, Lonnie Campbell, Jim Pittman, John T. Mayes, Tony Rawlings, John Cunningham and Bentley Jones. Honorary pallbearers are: Kenneth Jones, Fred Bottoms, Michael VanDyke Sr., Tony VanDyke, Ricardo Meaux, James Bryant and William H. Parks, Sr.

Sims Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

NANCY HAM

Nancy Clarine Curtis Ham, 92, of Carlisle, widow of Clyde F. Ham, Sr. passed away Sunday, July 25, 2010 at Johnson-Mathers Nursing Home.

She was born March 10, 1918 in Nicholas County to the late George Oney & Serelda Jane Hill Curtis, was a retired Nicholas County Schools Cook and member of the Blue Licks Christian Church.

Survivors include: two sons, Clyde F. “Frank” Ham, Jr., Harrodsburg and James R. “J. R.” (Martha) Ham, Versailles; two daughters, Charlotte (Nathan) Williams, Winchester and Judith (George) Borders, Gainesville, GA; five grandchildren, Tammy (John) Buffett, Steven Williams, Daniel (Bridget) Williams, Mary Courtney Ham & Russell B. Ham; two great-grandchildren, John A. Williams & Jay Morgan Williams; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Christine Dwelly, Nellie Graves, Louisa Ham and Pauline Jackson, and four brothers, Claude, Emery, Omar and Royce Curtis.

Services were held Wednesday, July 28, at the Blue Licks Christian Church by Rev. Sam Chanslor and Rev. Harold Hamm. Burial was in Carlisle Cemetery.

Memorial contributions suggested to the Blue Licks Christian Church.

MARIE HAWKINS

Marie Hawkins, 89, of Salvisa, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born Aug. 9, 1920 in Indianapolis, IN, she was the daughter of the late James Bond and Ida Lee (Beasley) Nelson. She was a retired caregiver and was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include one step-son, Darryl Hawkins of Lawrenceburg.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6 at the Kirkwood Cemetery in Salvisa.
