MARY HARLEY

Woman Dies In House Fire

An early morning fire Monday killed a veteran employee of Old Fort Harrod State Park.

Mary Rose Harley, 71, died in the fire at her home at 209 West Lane.

Harrodsburg Fire Chief Chris Dean said firefighters were called to the scene at approximately 3:39 Monday morning and encountered heavy smoke upon their arrival at the home. The house became engulfed in flames, and neighbors reported seeing flames shooting from the roof of the structure.

Dean said the state fire marshal was on the scene Monday morning. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Firefighters from the Mercer Central and Burgin fire stations assisted in fighting the fire. Mercer County Coroner Sonny Ransdell said Harley died as a result of smoke inhalation.

Brent Steele, Harley’s nephews, said he spike to her at approximately 9:30 p.m. Sunday, and the said they talked for about 30 minutes. Steele said he asked his aunt if she had turned her heat on because of the cool temperatures, and she told him she hadn’t yet. “She was as free hearted as she could be and always enjoyed helping people,” Steele said. “she loved her job and she loved history.”

Harley worked at the museum in Old Fort Harrod State park, where she had been employed for 43 years. Park Director David Coleman said Harley was a valuable asset to the park. “She was about the most giving employee you could ask for,” Coleman said. “she was always willing to give of herself and give her free time to the park. It was a joy to work with her and she will be sorely missed.”

Harley had no children, but is survived by two nieces and two nephews as well as a sister, Jean Steele.
