CARL MATHERLY SR.

Carl Edward Matherly Sr., age 78, of Main Street, Willisburg, passed away at 10:27 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010 at his home after an illness.

He was born in Mercer County on October 14, 1932 to the late Vernon Lanis and Mary Margaret Ross Matherly.

He was a member of the Willisburg Church Of Christ, a retired farmer and a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include: his wife, Nancy Inman Matherly; a daughter, Phyllis (Roy) Humes of Springfield; three sons, Carl Edward Matherly Jr. of Springfield, Keith (Mary Margaret) Matherly of Springfield, and Billy (Rose) Matherly of Lebanon; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Engle of Mt. Washington ; and two brothers, Boyce (Rae Ann) Matherly and Ronnie (Roxanne) Matherly, all of Mt. Washington .

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Truman Matherly on September 28, 1974 and Tony Matherly on January 1, 1998.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 17, at Carey & Son Funeral Home in Springfield, with Bro. Burnice Richardson, minister of the Willisburg Church Of Christ, officiating. He was assisted by Bro. Forrest Morris, a former minister of the Willisburg Church of Christ.

Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery at Willisburg where full military rites were conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.

Pallbearers were Jeremy Hagan, Brandon Thompson, Joe Russell, Jerry Darland, Calvin Runner and Stanley Brady.

Honorary pallbearers were Kenneth “Bud” Yates, Donnie Barr, Charles Devine, Charles Lewis and Jimmy Clark.

Carey & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

OPAL MAYES

Opal Patrick Mayes, 97, of Lawrenceburg formerly of Mercer County died Sat., Nov. 13, 2010 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Lawrenceburg. She is the widow of Eugene C. Mayes.

She was born June 22, 1913 in Whitley County, daughter of the late William L. and Martha E. Shepherd Patrick. Her family moved to Mercer County in 1919 and she was a graduate of Burgin High School and a former member of Shawnee Run Baptist Church.

Mrs. Mayes is survived by her brother, Walter Patrick of Lawrenceburg; nieces, Tandy C. Patrick of Louisville, Betty Coleman of Harrodsburg, Rhonda Toich and Kim Patrick of Cincinnati; nephews, William L. “Bill” Patrick of Lawrenceburg, David Patrick of Harrodsburg, Larry Patrick of Washington , D.C., and Douglas Patrick of Louisville.

Also, preceding her in death were brothers, Fred, Garrett, Lloyd, Charles, and Bert Patrick.

Graveside services were held Tues, Nov. 16, 2010 at Springhill Cemetery in Harrodsburg. led by Rev. James Wheeler. There was no visitation.

Arrangements were entrusted to Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home, Lawrenceburg.

GEORGIA NAPIER

Georgia Whitenack Napier, 87, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010. Born in Harrodsburg, she was a daughter of the late Elwood Floyd and Mary Jane Sallee Whitenack. She was predeceased by her husband Felix Napier Jr., her brothers, Elwood Floyd Whitenack, Jr. (Jack), Jim Whitenack, Carey T. Whitenack and a sister Pataline Whitenack Morrisey.

She is survived by her daughter Frances Napier Caudill and Son-in law Lloyd D. Caudill; three grandchildren Heather Caudill, James Caudill (Wendy), and Ashley Caudill-Mirillo (Richard); two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Price Ransdell (Glenn),Dana Haas, and Cindy (Ron) Riddle; two brothers, Roland Whitenack, and Milton Whitenack; and two sisters-in-law Ann (Jack) Whitenack and Connie (Jim) Whitenack Baker.

A memorial service will be held at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, Mt. Pleasant Road, Harrodsburg, Saturday, Nov. 20, at 1 p.m.

KENNETH OWENS

Kenneth L. Owens, 54, of Stanford, passed away Saturday, November 13, 2010 at University of Kentucky Medical Center.

He was born Sunday, January 8, 1956 in Corbin.

Kenneth was a retired US Air Force veteran and in his 19 years of service, he was a munitions systems specialist and a member of the honor guard. After his years with the Air Force, Kenneth went to work at Corning in Harrodsburg as a fork lift operator. He was a Baptist and enjoyed fishing and hunting. But most of all, he will be remembered for his love of his grandchildren and doing special things with them, especially go-Kart racing.

He is preceded in death by, Hershel Owens; and a sister, Peggy Pagliarulo.

He is survived by: his wife of 35 years, Debbie Owens of Stanford; his daughter, Kelly Ammons of Stanford; his grandchildren, McKenzie and Collin; his parents, Betty and Kenneth Jones of London; his brothers, Harold (Sherry) Jones of London, Kenneth (Brenda) Jones, Jr. of Corbin, Bill (Violet) Jones of Corbin and Mike (Diane) Jones of Waynesburg; and his sister, Leslie (Chris) Stanley of London.

An Appreciation of Life Service was held Wednesday, November 17, the at Fox Funeral Home in Stanford by Bro. Chris Stanley. Burial followed in Buffalo Springs Cemetery with full military honors provided by the US Air Force.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may go to American Cancer Society or D.A.V.

Johnny Clark, Jeff Long, Colby Long, Ralph Coffee, G. B. Thomas, Michael McClary, Lou Siano, Glenn Madison and Michael Kuhaneck will as Pallbearers.

Jimmy Sowers, Noah Kirkpatrick, Eddie Sowers and Harold Jones were honorary pallbearers.

CHRISTINA POYNTER

Christina Lynn Poynter, 39, Harrodsburg, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010 in Harrodsburg.

Born June 6, 1971 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of Warren D. Stratton and the late Patricia Bottoms.

She is survived by a daughter: Lori Ann Tingle and a son, William Brandon Poynter both of Springfield; a grandson: Devyn Wayne Tingle; sisters: Carol Sue Miller and Barbara Coffey and brothers: David (Janice) Tingle, Carl Thomas Bottoms, Rocky and Caleb Stratton and Donnie Jones.

Services were conducted Sunday, Nov. 14 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel. Burial was in Peter Cemetery, Mackville.

BEN RAMSEY

Ben Ramsey, 75, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010 at the Community Hospital East in Indianapolis, IN. He was born on July 13, 2010 in Mt. Vernon, the son of the late William and Lula Mae Renner Ramsey. He was a retired merchant having operated B. J. Fence Company in Indianapolis, IN. He was a member of the Bible Church of Indianapolis, IN.

Survivors include: one son, Michael Ramsey of Indianapolis, IN, one step-son, Ronnie White ; one daughter, Carol Ervin of Harrodsburg; one step-daughter, Veronica White ; two brothers, Russell and Carl Ed Ramsey, both of Mt. Vernon; one sister, Rosella Gant of Mt. Vernon; four grandchildren; one step-grandchild; six great-grandchildren and a long time friend, Judy Jones.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Wright Ramsey and one brother, Floyd Ramsey.

The funeral was held Monday, Nov. 15, at the Cox Funeral Home Chapel in Mt. Vernon. The service was officiated by Bro. Elsie Doan. Burial followed at the Logsdon Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.

Pallbearers were: Carl Ramsey, Chris Ramsey, Gary Ramsey, Michael Ramsey, Ronnie White , Daniel Fletcher and Richard Moris.

MARGARET SATTERLY

Margaret Louise Satterly, 80, widow of Ordra D. Satterly, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010. Born July 17, 1930 in Garrard Co., she was the daughter of the late Vernie and Lida Jackson Cummins. She was a long time member of Harrodsburg Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was a loving Mother and Grandmother. Survivors include a son, Don D. Satterly of Anderson Co., a daughter, Janet Satterly (Bob) Orms of Danville, four grandchildren, Natalie Faith Orms, Caroline Grace Orms, Joshua Aaron Satterly and Michelle Lynn Satterly and three sisters, Jackie Glasscock, Jean Kapso and Faye Beecher. She was predeceased by two grandchildren, Fallon Louise Orms and Don Kevin Satterly.

The funeral was Monday, Nov. 15, at Stith Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Lane officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

The family requests memorial donations to UK Children’s Hospital.

PAULINE TAYLOR

Pauline Taylor, 89, Harrodsburg, widow of James Carroll Taylor, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital in Harrodsburg.

Born October 6, 1921 in Richmond, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Alice (Farthing) Jordan. She was a retired teacher from the Mercer County School System and a member of the Salvisa Christian Church. She attended Transylvania University and graduated from Eastern Kentucky University. She was also a Kentucky Colonel.

Survivors include: a sister: Sarah Sanford; a niece, Anne Jordan (Houston) Burkhead of Mt. Eden; a nephew, Eddie (Teresa) Sanford of Harrodsburg; five great neices and nephews and nine great-great-nieces and nephews.

Services were conducted 1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 16 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Jeff Bell and Vickie Lane Ray. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Tom Jones, Howard Fallis Jr., David Leo, Blane Grittion, William Taylor, Kenneth Roney and James Bucher. Honorary Bearers were: Harold Bucher, Ray Reichenbach, Larry Stopher and Al Abner.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Salvisa Christian Church.

JAMES THOMPSON

James Bertram "Henry" Thompson, 79, of Loretto, died Sunday, November 14, 2010 at Spring View Hospital - Lebanon.

He was born January 4, 1931 in Marion County, the son of the late Samuel Bertrand and May Lydia Hill Thompson.

Mr. Thompson was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was formerly employed with Jane and Linda Sportswear Company in Lebanon.

Survivors include: is wife of 55 years, Norita Bradshaw Thompson; two daughters, Kathy Blandford of Lebanon, Melanie Murphy of Loretto; six sons, Mike Thompson of Bardstown, Jim and Tim Thompson, both of Lebanon, James Thompson of Salvisa; Brian and Eric Thompson, both of Loretta; 25 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; three half brothers, Tom, Billy and Kenny Thompson, all of Junction City.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Greta Lynn Thompson, one sister, Nancy Jeanette Thompson, one half brother Charlie Thompson and one half sister, Joyce Gelene Thompson.

Funeral Mass was held Wednesday, November 17, at St. Francis of Assisi Church in St. Francis, celebrated by Rev. R. Joseph Hemmerle. Burial was in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery where military rite were performed by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.

Mattingly Funeral Home in Loretto is in charge of arrangements.

RICKY ATWELL

Ricky Lee Atwell, age 51, Harrodsburg, formerly of Lexington, died Friday, Nov. 19, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born December 5, 1958 in Lexington, he was the son of the late William and Marie Napier Atwell. Survivors include; three brothers: Jack (Rita) Atwell of Harrodsburg, Larry Atwell and Donnie Atwell both of Lexington, and several aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by a brother: William L. Atwell.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 23 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Andrew Dyer with burial in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Christian Life Center or the Love Tree.

RONALD BENGE

Ronald C. Benge, 57, of California died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010 in California.

He was the son of Kenneth Benge of Harrodsburg and the late Mary Helen Benge. He was president of a union for state personnel.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Bethel Baptist Church.

MARIAN BOTTOM

Marian Catherine Bottom, 82, of Mackville, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010 at the Spring View Hospital in Lebanon.

A native of Washington County, she was born Sept. 14, 1928 to the late Floyd and Anna Mae Watts Harmon. She was a member of the Mt. Freedom Baptist Church and a former employee of the Hall Mack Company of Harrodsburg.

Preceding her in death was her husband, John Bottom and two sisters, Mary Belle Quillen and Margie Devine along with four brothers, Maurice, Marshall, Grant and Marvin T. Harmon.

She is survived by: three sons, Bennie (Janice) Bottom of Burgin, Dale Bottom and Steve Bottom of Mackville; two daughters, Lou Sagracy of Mackville and Phyllis Bottom of Springfield; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Saturday, Nov. 20 at the Carey and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Nelson Reynolds officiating. Burial was in the Peter Cemetery at Mackville.

Pallbearers were Jonathan Sagracy, Jamie Bottom, Carl Bottom, Ginger Bottom, Nikki Bottom and Josh Burns.

BETTY CRABTREE

Betty Jane (Preston) Crabtree, daughter of the late Nancy Wilson and Bradley Preston died Nov. 16, 2010. She is survived by her husband, Willie L. “Bill” Crabtree, Jr, and two daughters, Susan (Brian) Deyo of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Billie Jo (Michael) Trammell, of Huntersville, NC. She is also survived by three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Born in Harrodsburg, Betty travelled the world with her husband as a military wife until settling in Perryville.

Funeral services were Friday, Nov. 19 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Lewis Walter and Johnny Thompson. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Willie Hurst, Chris Wheeldon, Brian Deyo, Mike Trammell, Paul Hunt, Donnie Allen and Jeremy Emerson. Honorary Bearers were: Michael Janick, Willam Allen.

GEORGE DAVENPORT

George Lapsley Davenport, 94, died on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at the St. Elizabeth Hospice Center in Northern Kentucky. Davenport was one of nine children born to Samuel Nelson and Hattie Buchanan Davenport in Harrodsburg. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolly Gill Gregory Davenport, his son, George Gregory Davenport and six of his siblings. He is survived by two daughters, Dinah Deye of Ft. Wright and Cathy Johnson of Gulf Shores, AL, a sister, Elizabeth Harris of Danville, a brother, Robert Davenport of Danville, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and companion, Betty Oppenheimer of Florence.

He retired from the Federal Housing Administration as an appraiser. He was a long time member of Madison Avenue Christian Church and served as Deacon. He was a member of the Masonic Order and Shriners.

Services were held Sunday, Nov. 21 at the Madison Avenue Christian Church in Covington. Memorials may be addressed to the church.
