SHIRLEY LEIBUNDGUTH

Shirley Mae Leibundguth, 75, of Harrodsburg, died Sunday Nov. 21, 2010 at her residence. She was born April 6, 1935 in Sumner, IA to the late Henry Bergman and Edna Huebner Bergman. Leibundguth was the widow of Arthur Leibundguth. She was a graduate of State University of Iowa where she received her Bachelor of Arts, certificate of teaching from Luther College, and her nursing degree from University of South Florida.

Survivors include two sons: Marc Leibundguth and David (Rose) Leibundguth both of Harrodsburg. Two brothers Donald Bergman of Bowling Green and Wayne Bergman of Minnesota; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

No visitation or funeral will be held.

THELMA LINTON

Thelma Clay Linton, 101, widow of Sterling T. Linton, Harrodsburg, died Friday, Nov. 19, 2010 at Danville Centre for Health and Rehabilitation after a lengthy illness.

Born July 21, 1909 in Mackville, she was the daughter of the late Beverly and Nannie Brown Clay. She was a graduate of Bate High School in Danville, was a caterer, a world famous cook having authored her own cook book, “Thelma’s Treasures: Secret Recipes of ‘The Best Cook In Harrodsburg.’” She was a member of the St. Peter AME Church in Harrodsburg where she served as Church secretary, steward, stewardess, former President of the Lula B. Morton Women’s Missionary Society and steward emeritus. She was named as a Pioneer Matriarch of Commitment and Dedication by the National Society of the DAR, was named Woman of the Year by the Fort Harrod Business and Professional Women’s Club and former President of the Mercer County Homemakers. On her 90th birthday she was honored by the Mercer County Fiscal Court with the entire day as “Thelma Linton Day”.

Survivors include her great-niece and godchild, Delois Hudson Welch, Danville and several cousins. She was preceded in death by one brother, Rastus Clay and one sister, Eliza Clay.

The Funeral was held Monday, Nov. 22, at the St. Peter AME Church by Bro. Ralph Smith. Burial was in the Springhill Cemetery in Perryville.

Pallbearers were: Andy Harris, Freddie Brown, Josh Hale, James Bryant, Charles Penix and Floyd Ballew.

Linton requested that memorial donations be made to the St. Peter AME Church. Sims Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.

GERTRUDE SMITH

Gertrude Mae Howard Smith, 74, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010 in Danville after a lengthy illness. Born April 7, 1936 in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late Harney G. and Grace Belle Weber Howard.

Survivors include four sons: Raymond Franklin Smith, Michigan, Richard Smith, Tennessee, Anthony and Charles Smith, both of Danville; one daughter Saundra Faye Smith, Danville; six sisters, a twin sister Gussie Faye Howard Burns, Waynesburg, Dorothy Cox, Viola Beasley and Betty Scrogham, all of Lawrenceburg, Doris Karnecia, Indiana and Patsy Turner, Versailles.

She was preceded in death by a son William Smith, a brother Harney Howard and two sisters, Starlena Wiechek and Etta Harley.

There will be no visitation or services at this time. Private services will be conducted at a later date. Sims Funeral Services in Harrodsburg are in charge of arrangements.

STEVE STIVERS

Steve Allen Stivers, 55, husband of Sherry Hazelwood Stivers, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010. Born February 21, 1955 in Shelby County, he was the son of the late Martin and Sally Bright Stivers. He was the former Executive Director of the Bluegrass Community Action Agency and received the Jesse Amburgey Award for his commitment to community action in 2009. He was also a member of the Lawrenceburg First Baptist Church.

Survivors other than his wife include: two brothers Bill (Glenna) Stivers of Shelby County and Dan Stivers of Nicholasville, and sister Patricia (Mike) Lathrem of Bowling Green, his mother and father-in-law, Wilma and Carl Hazelwood, 16 nieces and nephews, 19 great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Phillip Stivers.

Services were held Monday, Nov. 22, 2010 at Salvisa Baptist Church with Bro. Stewart Dawson and Bro. Logan Hazelwood officiating. Burial was at Kirkwood Baptist Church Cemetery with nephews Josh Hazelwood, Calen Hazelwood, Logan Hazelwood, Layne Hazelwood, Austin Hazelwood, Mark Stivers, Nathan Stivers and Jason Lathrem serving as pallbearers. Serving as honorary pallbearers were David Taylor, Troy Roberts, Dudley Shyrock, Dr. Jamie Gilbert, Burt Hahn and Jerry Cammack. Gash Memorial Chapel in Lawrenceburg was in charge of arrangements.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the American Cancer Society 1504 College Way Lexington, KY 40502 or to the Kirkwood Baptist Church Cemetery Fund at 1955 Kirkwood Rd., Salvisa, KY 40372.

DEAN WRIGHT

Dean Curtis Wright, 72, husband of Sandra Lynn O’Conner Wight died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010 at his residence.

Born April 3, 1937, in New York, Dean was the son of the late Ida Wight. He was a construction worker and an avid Denver Bronco fan and enjoyed playing golf.

In addition to his wife he is survived by one son: Doug Wright of Colorado, two step-sons: Carlos Torres of Burgin and Darin Wirick, one daughter: Myka (Scott) Sterling of Texas , three step-daughters: Sharon Lynn Rios of Burgin, Teresa Wirick of North Carolina and Johnna Voght of Oregon, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A private service will be held at a later date.

Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BETTY CHRISTERSON

Betty J. Christerson, 76, of Danville, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 2010 at her residence. Born July 13, 1934, she was a daughter of the late Robert Graham and Eunice M. Hart McCristal. She worked at Corning Glass, Palm Beach, and most recently Walmart as a Customer Service Manager. She was of the Baptist Faith and was an avid sports fan.

Survivors include: sons, Bruce G. (Sharen) Huffman and Chris (Debbie VanHook) Christerson, both of Danville; daughter, Aileen (Jozette Hayes) McCowan of Danville; brother, Paul Graham of Louisville; sister, Barbara Jean Martin of Elizabethtown; 6 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and many friends.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Hazel M. Christerson and sister, Brenda S. McCristal.

An Appreciation of Life service was held Dec. 1, at Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home with Lt. Dan and Captain Sarah Nelson officiating. Burial was in Bellevue Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Scottie McCristal, Chris Christerson, Brian and Kyle Huffman, Brad Curtis, and Derek Christerson. Honorary pallbearers were: nurses from Heritage Hospice, Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center 4th Floor and TCU, Dr. Richard Hempel, and Dr. Shakela Bux.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Heritage Hospice or the Salvation Army.

ADDIE DARLAND

Addie Darland, 97, widow of Ansel “Jack” Darland died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010 at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington. She was born Oct. 25, 1913 in Waddy, to the late Jim and Mary Covert Jetter. She was a homemaker, a member of Harrodsburg Baptist Church and a charter member of Widow to Widow. She enjoyed working in her church.

Survivors include one son: Jim (Mary) Darland of South Lebanon, OH; one daughter, Ann Grimes of Lexington. Five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, four grea-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Services were conducted Dec. 1, 2010 at Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Dr. Wayne Spivey officiating. Pallbearers were Jack Darland, Tyler Bryant, Kenneth Tabscott, Ronald Tabscott, Kevin Horn and Rusty Huffman. David Crawley served as an honorary pallbearer. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 208 Steele St., Frankfort, KY 40601.

JAMES DEAN

James “Obb” Dean, 97, of Mercer County, husband of the late Emily Driskell Dean, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center. Born Jan. 9, 1913 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Marshall and Minnie Woods Dean.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, having served with the Super 6th Armored Division. He was involved in five major battles; most notably the Normandy Invasion and Battle of the Bulge. He was a farmer, and a former road construction worker.

Survivors include three sons: Julian Dean of Sidney, OH, Carroll Dean and Tony Dean both of Lexington; one daughter Jeanie Dean of Lexington, three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by one son, Blanton Dean, one brother Argo Dean, and three sisters: Juanita Dean, Hallie Dean, and Delila Dean.

A graveside funeral service was held Dec. 1, 2010 at the Bohon Christian Church Cemetery with James A. Dean, Christopher Worthington, Mark Freeman, and Darrell Waterfill serving as pallbearers.

Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

CHERYL FISTER

Cheryl “Ricky” Sims Fister, 65, of Mercer County, Kentucky died Sun, Nov 28, 2010, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law in Lexington.

Born Feb 15, 1945, in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Mary “Bunnie” French Sims.

A graduate of the University of Kentucky, she received a Master’s Degree in Art from Georgetown College. She also attended Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. After retiring from teaching art at Lafayette High School, she began a second career in breeding Friesian horses on her farm in Mercer County. Her love of horses, and of all animals, was instilled in Ricky at a young age by her father, who was well known on the show horse circuits and later as a trainer and driver at the Red Mile. She was a member of the DAR, Jane McAfee Chapter, James Harrod Trust, and Harrodsburg Historical Society.

She is survived by: two sons, W. Morgan Fister (Taylor Keller Fister) and Justin E. Fister (Kara Kennedy Fister), all of Lexington; two grandsons, Morgan McMillan Fister and Cowden Sims Fister, both of Lexington; two sisters, Dianna Sims Rose and Mary Sims Woodard of Harrodsburg; two aunts, Helen Sims Wise, Louisville, and Ophelia Sims, Lexington; one uncle, Morgan R. French, Dallas, TX; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held Wednesday, December 1, at the Cathedral of Christ the King, with Father Chris Clay celebrating the mass. Burial followed in Bluegrass Memorial Gardens, Harrodsburg Road.

Pallbearers were William E. Gorman III, Edward B. Murphy, William Gill, Martin Keogh, Robert Sandford and Earl G. Robbins.

Honorary pallbearers were Daniel Caldwell and J. W. Fister, Jr.

Contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, Kentucky 40504 or the James Harrod Trust, P.O. Box 158, Harrodsburg, Kentucky 40330.

Milward Funeral Home – Southland, Lexington, was in charge of arrangements.

MARY ROSS

Mary Ella W. Ross, 72, of Perryville died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Hospital in Danville. Born Oct. 5, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Carl Watts and Virgie Phillips Dean. She was the widow of William Thomas “Billy” Ross, a Baptist and a former Cricketeer employee. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, drawing and listening to music.

Survivors include: three sons, William David Ross and Monty Clay Ross of Harrodsburg and Steve Thomas Ross of Lexington; two daughters, Carla Dawn Ross of Harrodsburg, Penny L. Lister and her husband, Barkley of Perryville; a granddaughter she raised: April Lee Ross of Harrodsburg; one brother: Carl Chris Watts of Lexington; one sister: Charlene Timm of Denmark, WS; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter: Dana Jo Ross; two sons: Billy Chris Ross and Thomas Lee Ross and a sister: Nancy Proctor.

Services were held Nov. 26, at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Junior Fields officiating. Burial took place in the Cornishville Christian Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Addie Cocanougher, Joshua Cocanougher, Lee King, Jacob Gibson, Wayne Lister and Jake Yadon. Honorary pallbearers were Jacob McCowan, Tucker Gibson, Tara King, Destiny Patrick, Kaylee Pinkston, Courtney Lister and Kasey Lister.

GEORGE WELDON

George Weldon, 79, of Junction City, died Monday, November 29, 2010 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. Born March 13, 1931 in Danville, he was the son of the late Frank and Lula Weldon.

He attended Parksville Baptist Church where he ministered by songs to prisoners throughout the prisons of Kentucky. He retired from Goodyear after working for many years. He served in the Kentucky National Guard for several years and loved fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Mattie Curtsinger Weldon of Junction City and brother, Glenn Weldon of Junction City. He was a devoted father and is survived by six children; David (Barbara) Weldon of Mitchellsburg, Patricia (Ernie) Browning of Lancaster, Georgia (Clarence) Brown of Corbin, Linda Weldon (Timothy) Proffitt of Junction City, Jerry Weldon of Danville, and Rev. Keith (Barbara) Weldon of Parksville. He was a beloved grandfather of 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one brother, two sisters, and three infant grandchildren.

An Appreciation of Life service will be (today) 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at Parksville Baptist Church with Rev. Keith Weldon officiating. Burial will follow in Junction City Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday and 11 a.m. -1 p.m. Thursday, at the church.

Pallbearers will be Chris, Justin, Zachary, Joshua, and Allen Weldon, Shayne Bailey and Jimmy Proffitt. Honorary pallbearers will be his 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions are suggested to WDFB Christian Radio.

Arrangements are entrusted to Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home.

DEAN WIGHT

SHEILA BARRETT

Sheila Ann Barrett, 66, Burgin, wife of Geoffry Barrett, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010 at her home.

Born Feb. 15, 1944 in Elkton, MD, she was the daughter of Theodore and Lovetta (Fitzgerald) Latte. She was a member of the Harrodsburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church, secretary for the South District Baptist Association and Outreach Caseworker for the Christian Appalachian Project.

Survivors other than her parents include: her husband: Geoffry Barrett, a daughter: Christine Marie Barrett of Burgin, and two sons: Geoffry Theodore Barrett of Burgin, Matthew Laurence (Laura) Barrett of Liberty; two brothers: Edward (Karen) Fontaine of Atlanta, GA and Gary (Carole) Fontaine of Cleveland, OH; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Ted Lattie Jr..

Funeral services were Wednesday, Dec. 8 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel officiated by Doug Davis. Burial was in the Burgin Memorial Garden.

Pallbearers were: Dale Davis, Tanner Barrett, David Barrett, Brad Ingram, Brandon Beldon and James “Buddy” Pike. Honorary Bearers were: Trevor Barrett, Chandler Barrett, Bethany Beldon, Jim Sevier, Chasitey Arasmith and Mike Ingram.
