CONNIE BASS

Connie M. Bass, 67, of Frankfort, died Wednesday December 1, 2010.

He was born on February 15, 1943 in Mercer County to the late William Jennings and Bessie Opal Smith Bast.

He served with the US Army, was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, and a former employee at Rudd Drywall Co.

He is survived by: his wife, Connie Sue Bass of Frankfort; three daughters, Connie Jean Bass of Mercer County, Marsha Dean of Versailles, and Callie Sue Bass of Frankfort; one son, William Bass of Frankfort; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anita Bottoms and Judy Hurst; and two brothers, Donnie Bast and Tony Bast.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Olszanski and Nora Patterson, and two brothers, Leroy Bast and Danny Bast.

Funeral service were held Monday December 6, at the Clark Legacy Center, Versailles Road, with Brother Herman Bowers officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Casketbearers were Anthony Bast, Larry Merriman, Eric Bast, Brian Hurst, Eddie Bast, and Brad Hurst.

Honorary Casketbearer was Bill Michael Wright.

Visitation is from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

VIRGINIA CHANCE

Virginia S. chance, 94, of Perryville, formerly of Garrard County, passed away Friday, November 26, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Medical Center in Danville.

She was born April 5, 1916 in Garrard County the daughter of the late Leslie Sebastian and Josephine Anderson Sebastian.

She was retired from the Mercer Dress Company and also worked in the Parachute Factory during WW II. She attended Bryantsville Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Bill Chance of Perryville and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert chance; son, Daniel Terrell Chance; and brothers, Reed, Rayford, Everett, Coleman, Shirley, Emmitt Thompson, an Kermit Sebastian, and also two infant brothers, and four sisters, Ethel, Zyda, Christine, and Minnie Pearl Sebastian.

Funeral services were held Monday, November 29, at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Lancaster with Bro. Travis Alltop and Bro. David Gambrel officiating.

Pallbearers were Gary Horton, Pete Owens, Jerry Wilson, O. Davis, Charles Sebastian, David Gambrel, and Robert Mayes.

Memorials suggested to Heritage Hospice or God’s Pantry.

GARNETT COLLIER

Garnett “Duck” Collier, 77, husband of Dorothy Corman Collier, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2010 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Born Dec. 31, 1932 in Boyle County, he was the son of the late Earl Daniel and Willie Price Williams Collier. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War, was retired from Dixie Cup in Lexington and a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church.

Survivors other than his wife include six sons: Garnett Wayne Collier of Harrodsburg, Ricky Thomas Collier of Nelson, PA, James Price Collier of Hustonville, Paul Daniel (Teresa) Collier, Gregory Lee Collier, and Robert Todd (Conjuna) Collier of Harrodsburg. Two daughters: Gloria Garnetta (John) White of Harrodsburg and Mary (Curtis) Collier-Grant of Columbia. Three brothers: Earl D. Collier, Jr. of Harrodsburg, Carlos Collier of Moreland, and Denzil Collier of Lancaster. Twenty one grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by two grandsons James Price Collier and Devon Thomas Collier, one brother Paul Collier, and one sister Christine Moore.

Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Hilary Claypool and Bro. James Harley officiating. Burial with military Honors will be in Burgin Memorial Gardens with Josh Collier, Michael Watts, Brandon Scheller, Gordon Wayne Collier, Michael “Tobo” Moore, Mark McGrath, and Carlos Collier, Jr. serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Watts, James Corman, Johnnie Carr, Johnnie Drury, Cameron Grant, Gavin Murphy, Johnnie Waldrep, and David Fisher.

Visitation will be held 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday and after 7:00 a.m. Friday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Galilean Children’s Home, P.O. Box 880, Liberty, KY 42539.

JIMMY DEVINE

Jimmy “Big Jimmy” Garland Devine, 64, husband of Laura Fugate Devine of Willisburg, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2010 at his residence. Born May 25, 1946 in Washington County, He was the son of the late Cleo and Beulah Dean Devine. He was a self employed truck driver and a member of the Mt. Olivet Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons: Jeffrey (Teresa) Devine and Jonathan Devine both of Harrodsburg, two granddaughters: Amber and Amanda Devine of Harrodsburg, one brother: Gary Devine of Springfield and one sister: Doris Lay of Willisburg.

Services were conducted Dec. 8, at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Brother Jay Hatfield and Archie Fugate Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Willisburg, with David Bishop, Cecil Buchanan, Joseph Sallee, Frank Fugate, Alvin Buck, Ronnie Sims, Mike Morris and Tommy Jones serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were his granddaughters and nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may take the form of donations to the American Cancer Society.

DORIS PEARCE

Doris Foster Pearce, age 86, of Danville, died Sunday, December 5, 2010 at James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Tuesday, September 9, 1924 in Jessamine County, she was a daughter of the late Lucian and Ethel Ware Foster. She was the widow of the late Garnett P. Pearce.

Mrs. Pearce retired from the Cabinet for Families and Children after 26 years. She was a member of the Garnett Pearce Sunday School Class at First Christian Church where she was a lifetime Elder and a Shepherding Elder. Doris was a former President and Co President of the Christian Women’s Fellowship. She was also a part of the Historical Society, D.O.L.L.S. and was a Kentucky Colonel.

Survivors include: her son, Kenneth (Jane) Pearce of Danville; sister, Jane Kurtz of Nicholasville; and niece Gennie (Daniel) Abner of Lexington.

An Appreciation of Life service was held Wednesday, December 8, at the Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home in Danville with Dr. Jerry Shepard officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Nicholasville.

Honorary pallbearers were the Garnett Pearce and Living Word Sunday School Classes.

Memorial contributions are suggested to First Christian Church.

JOHN ROBINSON

John A. Robinson, age 90, widower of Lucille Robinson of Broken Arrow, OK died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010 in Oklahoma.

Born Feb. 15, 1920 in Three Links, he was the son of the late John E. and Lucretia (Alcorn) Robinson.

Survivors include: a daughter; Patricia (Dan) Gaskins of Broken Arrow, OK.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 10 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel and burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 10 from Noon-2 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

DALE SHELLHAMMER

Dale Shellhammer, 86, Harrodsburg, husband of Linda Shellhammer, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born May 13, 1924 in Vandergrift, PA, he was the son of the late Ira Harold and Irene Elizabeth Donahay Shellhammer. He was a retired mechanical engineer at Mathews Conveyor Company and a member of the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the American Legion, VFW, Mercer Masonic Lodge #777 F&AM, Olekia Shrine Temple, the Scottish Rite and the Harrodsburg Lions Club.

Survivors include: his wife: Linda Jackson Shellhammer, a daughter: Renee D. (Jarrod) Eubank of Tampa, FL and two sons: Robert (Lisa Kirtley) Shellhammer of Versailles, and Brian (Tanya) Shellhammer of Lexington, one sister: Irma Jean (Donald) Douglas of Pheonix, AZ; five grandchildren.

Services were Monday, Dec. 6 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel. Burial was in the Camp Nelson National Cemetery, with military rites.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Shiners’ Hospital.

MARVIN SMITH

Sgt. Marvin Truman Smith, Jr., 47, of Vine Grove, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2010 at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown. He was born Sept. 18, 1963 in Mercer County, the son of Evelyn Toll Smith and Marvin T. Smith, Sr. of Salvisa.

In 1981 he joined the U.S. Army National Guard and was serving in Detachment 2 of the 203rd Forward Support Company. He was the recipient of the Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M device and Q, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Drivers/Mechanics Badge, Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, KY Commendation Ribbon, KY Service Ribbon, KY State Achievement Duty Ribbon, KY Merit Ribbon, and Armed Forces Reserve Medal with 10 year device. He was a member of the Full Gospel Assembly of God Church in Lawrenceburg and enjoyed restoring his 1923 T-bucket and wood crafting.

Including his parents he is survived by his wife, Sue Ann Betner Smith; a son, Matthew Wayne Betner of Florence; maternal grandmother, Madie Smith of Lawrenceburg; a brother, Mark Thomas (Robin) Smith of Harrodsburg; a niece; a nephew; several aunts and uncles.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010 at Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home with Bro. Jack Smith and U. S. Army Chaplain Mark East officiating. Burial will follow in Hebron Cemetery in Anderson County with full military honors. Visitation will be 4 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8.

Members of U.S. Army National Guard, Staff Sgt. Jeremy Bass, Staff Sgt. William Parker, Staff Sgt. Andy Roebuck, Staff Sgt. David Schrier, Sgt. Gregory Dodge, and Sgt. Joseph Fischer will serve as pallbearers. Honorary bearers will be Billy and Joyce Earlywine, and Tim Camp.

Memorials are suggested to Gideon’s International, Anderson County Camp, P.O. Box 61, Lawrenceburg, KY 40342.

BEATRICE SPARROW

Beatrice Riley Sparrow, age 89, of Salvisa, widow of Thomas Sparrow, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010.

She was the daughter of the late William Russell and Vergie Myrtle Ellis Riley. She was a 1939 graduate of Salvisa High School, and member of Salvisa Baptist Church where she attended the Wingo Sunday school class. She was a cook for Mercer County Elementary School and was the owner of Family Affair Restaurant & Catering in Salvisa.

She is survived by three daughters, Shirley Johnson, Judie Kays, and her husband, Jerry, and Joy Morris, and her husband, Joe, all of Salvisa; son, Kent Sparrow, Salvisa; three sisters, Marie Carter, and Bonnie Royalty, and her husband Clifford, both of Lawrenceburg, and Edna Phillips, Salvisa; sister-in-law, Evelyn McGee, Louisville; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services were Dec. 3, at Salvisa Baptist Church with Bros. Larry Cook and Chris Brown officiating. Burial was in Lawrenceburg Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Heritage Hospice or Christian Life Center of Salvisa Baptist Church, P.O. Box 75, Salvisa, KY 40372.

Casketbearers will be John Mark Johnson, Jonathan Kays, Lee Williamson, Chris Soard, Caleb Smith, Johnathon Johnson, Jacob Abner, and Phillip Huffman. Honorary bearers were past and present employees of Family Affair Restaurant.

JOHNATHON TAYLOR

Jonathon Wayne Taylor, 63, of Mercer County, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010 at the Select Specialty Hospital in Lexington. Born June 30, 1947 in Mercer County, he was the son of Arnetta Gayle Smith Butler of Mercer County and the late Johnnie Elmon Taylor. He was a self employed heavy equipment operator. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and doing general mechanic work.

Survivors besides his mother include two sons: Jonathon Wayne (Nona) Taylor, Jr. and Timmy (Carolee Shifflett) Taylor both of Mercer County. One daughter Brittany Taylor of Mercer County, one brother John Keith (Patricia) Taylor of Mercer County, six grandchildren, one great-grandson, one niece and one step niece also survive.

He was preceded in death by one daughter Cherry Lynn Taylor.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. Gilbert Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery with Austin Taylor, Wesley Taylor, Bradley Taylor, William McFerron, Billy Votaw and Charles McFerron, Jr. serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Jay Miller, Kent Lunsford, Damon Kelly, Ronnie Coffman, Lonnie Coffman and Charles McFerron, Sr.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 7 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

EARL DARLAND

Earl D. Darland, 68, Nicholasville, widower of Ann Miller Darland, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010 at the V. A. Medical Center in Lexington.

Born April 10, 1942 in Harrodsburg, to the late Benjamin Franklin and Ray Evelyn (Devine) Darland. He served in the United States Army during the Vietname War, was a retired Lexmark International employee, and a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church.

Survivors include: two children: Trish (Gerald) Claunch and Doug (Jamie) Darland of Harrodsburg; three sisters: Margaret Ward and Gloria Jean Murphy of Harrodsburg, Ruth Hatter of Danville; five brothers: Connie Darland and Dale Thomas Darland of Harrodsburg, Marvin Darland of Lexington, Floyd Darland and George Darland of Indiana; two grandchildren, and Celess Darland, two great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Virginia “Sis” Matherly, a brother, J. B. Darland and an infant grandson, Brandon Claunch.

The funeral was Saturday, Dec. 11 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel officiated by David Collier and Barry Harmon. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Gary Watts, Kevin Darland, Don Matherly, Josh Milburn, Jonathan Milburn and Todd Boyd.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of the Bluegrass or the MSI Haiti Fund, P.O. Box 4907 Onita TN, 37841.

SCOTT GEORGE

Rev. D. Scott George, 83 of Lexington, formerly of Burgin, and Steubenville, OH, died Saturday, December 11, 2010 at St. Joseph Hospice.

He was born January 14, 1927 in Steubenville a son of the late Wilmer & Junia Tarr George.

He was a 1944 graduate of Wintersville High School; 1952 graduate of Asbury College in Wilmore, KY and 1956 graduate of Pittsburgh-Xenia Seminary. Scott was named a Kentucky Colonel. Scott served in the US Army 88th Division in Italy from 1945-1946. Rev. George pastored churches in the North East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church for 40 years, serving churches in rural Carroll County, Freeport, South Bellaire, Scio and Steubenville (Finley U.M. Church).

Rev. George is survived by: his wife, Clara Mae Stanley George, whom he married in 1947; daughter, Alice (Wayne) Rogers of Wilmore; son, Walter Scott (Susan) George of Augusta, GA; grandsons, Alexander Scott Rogers and Benjamin George Rogers; brother, Mark (Gaynalee) George of Canton, OH; sisters Lu Grimm of Steubenville & Abbie (Pete) Gue of Columbus, OH; 21 nieces and nephews; and the extended George and Tarr families in the Steubenville area.

Friends may call at Finley U.M. Church, 900 Lincoln Avenue, Steubenville on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 1 p.m. with Rev. P. Douglas George and Rev. Tom Crawford officiating. Burial at New Alexandria Cemetery.
