JAMES ELLIS

James L. Ellis, 90, husband of the late Geneva Durham Ellis, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Lexington.

Born Sept. 30, 1920 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Elwood and Katheren McFarland Ellis, Sr. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, a self employed farmer and was widely known as the “Walnut King”. Ellis was a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church.

Survivors include one daughter: Judy (James) Cox of Harrodsburg; two brothers: Horace Cecil (Marie) Ellis of Harrodsburg and Elwood (Charlene) Ellis, Jr. of Lakeland, FL; two grandchildren: James Robert (Stephanie) Davis of Harrodsburg and April (Scott) Cunningham of Liberty; one step-grandchild: Patience Cox of Harrodsburg; two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Ed Ellis and George Ellis and two sisters: Marie Shewmaker and Viola Castle Berry.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, Jan. 17, 2011 at Harrodsburg Christian Church with Mark Thompson officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery with James Kurtz, Aaron Gray, Calvin Shewmaker III, Ronnie Griffin, Charlie Davis and Jerry Foster serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Jim Bob Davis, April Davis Cunningham, Patience Cox, Ellisa Marie Watts Davis, Dylan Cunningham, Scott Cunningham and Stephanie Griffin.

CHELCIE FOLLOWELL

Chelcie Vanoy Followell, 99, died Sunday, January 16, 2011, at the Charleston Health Care, Danville.

Born Wednesday, October 4, 1911, in Liberty, she was a daughter of the late George William and Rosa King Vanoy.

Mrs. Followell was a devoted mother, longtime member of Salt River Baptist Church, and an avid quilter.

Survivors include: five sons, Wade (Marie) Followell, Bobby (Betty) Followell and Darrell (Ann) Followell, all of Danville, Marlin (Glendon) Followell and Donny Followell, both of Harrodsburg; three daughters, Norma Cox and Juanita (Kenneth) Vernon, both of Junction City, and Eraina (Robert) Elliott of Kingston, TN; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Followell of Cincinnati, OH; one brother, Ansil Vanoy of Liberty; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who she wed on September 15, 1929, Samuel “Byron” Followell; one son, Loren “Bud” Followell; two brothers, Hollis and Ernest Vanoy; and four sisters, Lillian Craft, Hazel Ellison, Lois Brown, and Mayme Allen.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at the Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home in Danville with Bro. Dave Evans officiating. Burial was in Bellevue Cemetery.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

CHARLES JENKINS

Charles Henry “Junie” Jenkins, Jr., 55, husband of Vickey L. Jenkins of Harrodsburg, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011 at his residence.

Born Jan. 2, 1956, he was the son of Willie Bernice Bea Jenkins of Independence, KS and the late Charles H. Jenkins, Sr. He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Church.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by four children: Amber Jenkins of Harrodsburg, Kayla Robinson of WA, Cathy (Rob) Corson of Nicholasville and Bobby (Sherry) Wolter of Lexington; three brothers, Amos, Mark and Johnny (Vicki) Jenkins, all of Harrodsburg; three sisters, Addye (Wayne) Jackson of Ethel, MS Sue (Leslie) McCurry of Iva, SC and Debbie (Mark) Jenkins Walker; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his step-mother: Aileen Jenkins of Harrodsburg.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Gary Story and Derek Baker officiating. Burial was in New Providence Cemetery with Kenneth Propes, Cory Powell, Amos Jenkins, Jr., Michael Jenkins, Dillon Jenkins, and Tyler Jenkins serving as pallbearers.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Heritage Hospice, P.O. Box 1213, Danville, KY 40423.

LELIA SATTERLY

Lelia Mae Drury Satterly, 93, widow of W.G. Satterly, died Jan. 2, 2011.

Born in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Walter Lee and Madge Darnell Drury. She was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church and a former employee of Hub Frankel in Danville.

She is survived by her children: Tony (Laura) Satterly and Roxie (James) Hall; a sister: Corinna (Garland) Hoskins; a brother: Luther (Jean) Drury; a daughter-in-law: Rita Satterly; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, a nephew, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great-nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister: Gladys Sanders.

Funeral services will be conducted at Ransdell Funeral Chapel Saturday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. with burial in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Sat. from 12 p.m. until the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to: Oneida Baptist Institute, PO Box 67, Oneida, KY 40972-0067.

IVA SHEWMAKER

Iva Jewell Darland Shewmaker, 90, of Mackville, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

A native of Washington County, she was born March 17, 1920 to the late Davy and Lillie Lambert Darland.

She was a member of the Mackville Church Of Christ and a homemaker.

Survivors include, a brother, Norman Darland and his wife, Lou, a sister, Juanita Hilton all of Mackville, three nephews and four nieces.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Elwood Shewmaker, a son, Jerry Lynn Shewmaker and two sisters, Beuna Darland and Liberty Cochran.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 19 at the Carey & Son Funeral Home with Bro. Frank Preston, former minister of the Mackville Church of Christ, officiating. He was assisted by Bro. Charles Knecht, minister of Mackville Church Of Christ.

Burial was in the Peter Cemetery at Mackville.

Serving as pallbearers were Lynn Cochran, Nathan Cochran, Pat Abell, David Hunter Baker, Jimmie Dayle Hawthorne and Dustin Jay Whittinghill.

Carey & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

BOBBY TAYLOR

Bobby C. Taylor, 61, husband of Rebecca Brown Taylor of Harrodsburg, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2011 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 5, 1939 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Sanford C. and Myrtle Lambert Taylor. He was a Saddlebred horse breeder, a former Proctor and Gamble employee and was a member of the Grapevine Christian Church.

Survivors, other than his wife include: a daughter, Karen Taylor Johnson of Lexington; a brother, Donald Eugene Taylor of Lexington; a sister, Lorraine Tackett of Danville; and a grandchild, Taylor Johnson.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, Jan. 17, 2011 at Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Ricky and Daryl Catlett. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Chuck Bugg, Arthur Brown, Bob Holland, Casey Crabtree, Marion Rogers Jr. and Don Allen.

Honorary bearers were: Julian Thomas, Stanley Riney, Bill Hollar, Danny Noel and Albert Woodrum.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Heritage Hospice, P.O. Box 1213, Danville, KY 40422, or to one’s favorite charity.

HOMER WHITE

Homer White , 86, widower of Alma Wray White , died Monday, Jan. 17, 2011 at his residence.

Born March 8, 1923 in Richmond, he was the son of the late Joe and Jessie Corner White . He was retired from Hayslett’s Mechanical Contractors and was a member of the Dry Branch Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and a member of the VFW Post 3634 in Boyle County.

Survivors include: two sons, Homer White Jr. of Mercer County and Jerry Lee White of Paducah; five daughters, Jean Savage of Mercer County, Judy Thompson of Danville, Carolyn West of Junction City, Sheila Williams of Lincoln County and Lisa White of Junction City; one brother, Bobby White of Mercer County; 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, James Allen White ; three brothers, Jim, Herbert, and Stanley White and two sisters, Lucille Freeman and Ruby Carroll.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Larry Hale officiating. Burial with military Honors will be in Spring Hill Cemetery with Matthew West, Devin Adams, Homer Shawn Williams, Jamie Lynn Williams, Anthony Andrew Williams, Troy Moore, Homer James White , James Allen White , Jr., Michael Savage, and Joey White serving as pallbearers.

NELSON WOOLCOTT JR.

Nelson Woolcott Jr., 89, passed away Saturday, January 15, 2011 after a short illness.

He was the son of the late Nelson Woolcott Sr. and Clara Seten Woolcott of Lexington, and was born December 14, 1921.

He was a graduate of University High School and the University of Kentucky where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. He received his degree from the University of Kentucky in economics after three years of service in the United States Army in WWII. He was a small business owner in the bluegrass area and owned and operated the Woolcott Parking Garage on Short Street in downtown Lexington for many years. He was the owner of the Danville 5&10 store in Danville. He was also a local realtor with Arnold Real Estate Co. where he worked until his retirement. He was a lifelong member and deacon in the First Presbyterian Church in Lexington; a former member of the Lexington Country Club, Idle Hour Country Club; and Rotary Club of Lexington.

He is survived by: one sister, Mary Virginia Woolcott of Lexington; two children, Rebecca Woolcott Storey of Lexington, and James Nelson Woolcott of Omaha, NE; four grandchildren, Dr. Benjamin Barckley Storey Jr. of Louisville, Jane Walker Storey Starling (Peter) of Naples, FL, Elizabeth Ruth Woolcott and Allison Jane Woolcott of Omaha, NE; three nephews, George Woolcott, Jr. of Harrodsburg, William Elliott Walden of Shelbyville, and Ben Walden Jr., Lexington; and a niece, Hallie Gay Walden Bagley of Lexington.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Jane Elliott Woolcott; a sister, Dorothy Woolcott of Lexington; and a brother George Woolcott of Harrodsburg.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 21, at the Lancaster Cemetery in Lancaster.

Visitation will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home on Main Street in Lexington.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Dr., Lexington, KY 40504.

GORDON BEASLEY

Gordon Beasley, 52, husband of Lisa Maitlen Beasley, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born April 10, 1958 in Lynn, IN, he was the son of Earl Gordon Beasley Sr. and Shirley Kennedy Beasley of Crab Orchard. He was enrolled at Bluegrass Community and Technical College and was a previous employee of the Thomson-Hood Veterans Center.

Survivors in addition to his wife and parents are, a daughter: Samantha Sparkman of Crab Orchard; one step-daughter: Ciara Browning of Harrodsburg; one step-son: Dylan Hawes of Harrodsburg; one brother: Alan Beasley of California; two sisters: Jill Beasley of Nicholasville and Monica Kirby of Lexington; two grandchildren, a nephew and a niece.

A memorial service will be held 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.

ARNOLD CLARK

Arnold Eugene Clark, 72, of Eubank, passed away January 22, 2011 at the University of Louisville Hospital.

He was born September 1, 1938 in Acorn, KY to the late Albert Clark and Alta Burdine Clark.

Arnold was a general contractor and of the Baptist faith.

Arnold is survived by: his brother, Clifford (Ernie) Clark of Harrodsburg; and sisters, Betty Wheeler of Eubank, Connie Williamson of Lexington; and half-sister Vickie (Jim) Worley of Somerset. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Arnold in death were his parents and brother, Danny Candler.

A celebration honoring the life of Arnold will be held Wednesday, January 26, at 11 am at Somerset Undertaking & Crematory with Pastor Mark Harrell officiating.

Interment will be at Holloway Cemetery in Whitley City, KY.

Somerset Undertaking & Crematory is in charge of all arrangements.

DAVID CROSS

David Larry Cross, 57, of Harrodsburg died Thursday January 20, 2011.

Born February 20, 1953 in Danville, he was the son of Joseph Michael and Mable Neoma King Cross.

He was a shoe cobbler.

He is survived by: three sons, Justin Cross, Michael Cross and David Larry Cross Jr.; two sisters, Wanda Plummer and Carolyn Cross; six brothers, Donal Cross, Kenneth (Brenda) Cross, Richard Cross, Billy Cross, Douglas Cross and Danny (Darlene) Cross.

The graveside service will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 26, at Hillcrest Cemetery, Perryville.

Stith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
