James O'Connor, Merchant Marine captain

James Richard O'Connor saw the world as a ship captain for the Merchant Marines.

He shipped goods across the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, to such exotic destinations as Indonesia and Greenland.

After he married in New Orleans in 1963, he and his new wife took their honeymoon in Egypt, where his freight ship was carrying grain.

Mr. O'Connor settled in Northern Kentucky about 12 years ago, following his early retirement.

He died at 3:48 a.m. Tuesday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home. The Wilder resident was 74.

Mr. O'Connor was born, reared and died in different parts of the country. Born in New York, he moved at a young age to St. Petersburg, Fla., where he and his siblings were raised.

He graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in New York in 1944. His twin brother, who today lives in Puerto Rico, also went to the academy.

Mr. O'Connor worked for several commercial steamship lines, delivering goods all over the world.

After he married his wife, Barbara O'Connor, in 1963, he decided to retire early, around 1970.

They moved to Cincinnati, Mrs. O'Connor's hometown, in 1966.

Mr. O'Connor had many interests, including tennis, theater and cooking.

In the 1970s, Mr. O'Connor worked as an understudy at Playhouse in the Park.

After the couple moved to Southgate in the mid-1980s, Mr. O'Connor became very involved in tennis clubs. They moved to Wilder two years ago.

"He was a very outgoing, personable guy," Mrs. O'Connor said. "The social life he built up was mainly through tennis."

Other survivors include a brother, Jack O'Connor of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
