Howard Owings, owned radio shop

Howard Owings had a love for radio that dated back to his teen-age years.

Mr. Owings, 86, of Dayton, died early Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas.

For many years he owned and operated Owings Radio, Television and Appliance Store in Dayton.

As a high school student Mr. Owings had a keen interest in radio, said his wife, Lenore. He had a little radio station in his back yard, and, with another student, installed an intercom system in the school, she said.

For Dayton football games a few years later, Mr. Owings took large speakers to the field and placed them on top of his car to provide a public address system, his wife said.

Mr. Owings sold and serviced radios, and later televisions, from the business he operated. "In the early days of television, before the big department stores started to sell them, he sold a lot of sets. He handled Philco's," Mrs. Owings said.

When he wasn't selling or servicing electronic equipment, Mr. Owings was engaging in his hobby of amateur radio. "He talked on short wave a lot," said Mrs. Owings. He was a licensed commercial radio and telephone engineer.

During World War II, Mr. Owings worked on radar at a plant in Indiana, she said.

Mr. Owings also was active in the Masonic Lodge for years, and until recently would attend meetings at a lodge hall near his home, climbing three flights of stairs to the meeting hall, his wife said.

Mr. Owings was a member of Henry Barnes Masonic Lodge of Dayton, the Bellevue-Dayton Lions Club and the First Presbyterian Church of Dayton.
