Obie Hopes

JEANERETTE - Services are pending for Obie Hopes, 69, who died at 6:59 a.m. Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Iberia Medical Center in New Iberia following a lengthy illness.

Fletcher Funeral Home of Jeanerette is in charge of arrangements.

Ethel M. Lawrence

Services for Ethel Marie Mestayer Lawrence, 86, will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the family tomb in the church cemetery. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Crestview Retirement Community.

Visitation will be Saturday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.

A native of New Iberia, a former resident of Wyoming and California, and a resident of Houston for 50 years, Mrs. Lawrence died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, in Bryan, Texas.

Mrs. Lawrence was the daughter of Oscar and Noemie Dauterive Mestayer of New Iberia. She was an alumnus of Mount Carmel Academy and Northwestern Louisiana State Normal. Before her marriage in 1941, she taught and was a librarian in the schools of southern Louisiana as well as a social worker for the state. Family and friends remember Mrs. Lawrence for her joie de vivre and her loving care for neighbors.

She is survived by her daughter, Bobette McFarland, and her husband, William F. McFarland, of Bryan; three sons, Robert O. "Joe" Lawrence, and his wife, Betty, and John T. Lawrence, and his wife, Sandy, all of Houston, and Donald J. Lawrence, and his wife, Lorraine, of Boerne, Texas; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Lawrence was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Robert O. Lawrence Jr.; one brother, Warren A. Mestayer; and two sisters, Vivian A. and Mae A. Mestayer.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Crestview Retirement Community, 2505 Villa Maria, Bryan, Texas 77802, or to Brazos Valley Hospice, 205 E. 25th St., Bryan, Texas 77803.

Services are pending for Emelie Simon, 71, who died at 11:30 p.m. Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette.

Clara S. Wilson

Loving wife and mother

Services for Clara Lee Wilson, 60, the former Clara Segura, will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Star Temple Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnell Cheatham officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-10 p.m. today at Journet and Bolden Funeral Home Chapel, which will reopen Saturday at 7:30 a.m.

A native and lifelong resident of New Iberia, Mrs. Wilson died at 7:25 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at a Lafayette hospital following a brief illness.

Mrs. Wilson was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by two sons, Gregory "Te-Pop" and Donald "Peachy" Wilson Sr., both of New Iberia; three brothers, Herrod and Willis Segura, both of New Iberia, and Rev. Herman Segura of Houston; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her parents, Aaron and Clara Segura; her brother, Wilfred Segura Sr.; and her sister, Lillie Mae Segura.

Pallbearers will be family members.

Roberta W. Clifton

SHREVEPORT - Services for Mrs. Roberta Williamson Clifton will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Michael the Arch Angel Chapel of St. John Berchmans Cathedral. Interment will follow at Forest Park cemetery. A memorial service will be held in New Iberia at a later date.

A native of Shreveport and resident of New Iberia for seven years, Mrs. Clifton died Friday, July 21, 2000 at her residence following a brief illness.

Visitation will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. today at Osborn Funeral Home in Shreveport.

Mrs. Clifton was a member and past president of the Texas Association of Hospital Auxiliaries, head volunteer for the Harris County American Red Cross, past president of Southwest Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Houston.

She was also a member of the University Women's Alliance Club of Houston, The Houston Club, Houston Bar Auxiliary, GWFC of New Iberia, The New Iberia Garden Club and was a former member of River Oaks Baptist Church.

Mrs. Clifton is survived by two daughters, Karen Flick and Lee O'Brien; three grandchildren, Emily and Jennifer Flick, and Christopher O'Brien; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Taliferro, and her family; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Betty Clifton Johnson, and her family.

Mrs. Clifton was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip K. Clifton; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Williamson; a daughter, Phyllis Clifton; and a son-in-law, Raymond John O'Brien III.

Pallbearers will be Jack Ferrell, Lane Stephenson, John Cowen, Edward Dauterive, Hunter Ferrell, Conner Burke and Joel Ferrell.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dustin Guillotte, Skylar Judice and Dwane Tarrant.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 3100 Samford Ave., Shreveport, LA. 71103.

Donald Joseph

Services for Donald "Duck" Joseph, 56, will begin at 7 p.m. Monday at Journet and Bolden Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Norbert officiating. Interment will be in St. Matthew cemetery Tuesday after a 10 a.m. dismissal services at the funeral home.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. Monday until the time of services at Journet and Bolden Funeral Home, which will reopen at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

A native and lifelong resident of New Iberia, Mr. Joseph died at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at Dauterive Hospital following a brief illness.

Mr. Joseph was a graduate of Jonas Henderson High School and also Southern University. He was employed by the Louisiana Department of Labor and recently by the Iberia Parish School Board. He was a former member of Friend Civic and Social Club and the American Bowling Congress.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Bourgeois Joseph of New Iberia; his father and step-mother, Wesley and Geraldine Livingston of Elton; three sons, Kevin Troy Joseph and Kendall Todd Joseph, both of New Iberia, and Kerry Tramaine Joseph of Youngsville, defensive back for NFL's Seattle Seahawks; one brother, Wesley Livingston Jr. of Houston; one step-brother, Leroy Joseph Sr. of New Iberia; seven sisters, Eleanor Ann Joseph of New Iberia, Deborah L. Clark of Baton Rouge, Acquanetta L. Jack of Elton; Sybyl L. Coleman and Avis Livingston, both of Lake Charles; Venessa Livingston of Carencro; and Mildred Smith of Ruston; one granddaughter, Kiely Janae' Joseph; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy "Decee" Joseph; and adopted father, Harold "Gee-Gee" Joseph.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

David E. Phillips Sr.

Services for David Edgar Phillips Sr., 85, will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike McLaurin officiating. Interment will be in Rosehill cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at David Funeral Home - New Iberia North, which will reopen Monday from 8 a.m. until services.

A native of Durant, Okla., and resident of New Iberia, Mr. Phillips died at 11:56 a.m., Saturday, July 22, 2000, at his residence.

Mr. Phillips retired from Loffland Brothers after 47 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge Aurora Lodge 193 F & AM, and the Eastern Star Wisteria Chapter 61. Mr. Phillips was a Brother of Scottish Rights of Free Masonry 32nd Degree Mason.

He is survived by two sons, Richard Phillips of Lake Jackson, Texas, and David Phillips Jr. of New Iberia; one daughter, Mrs. James (Beverly) Schwing Sr. of New Iberia; devoted friends, Jimmy and Marnell Laperouse of New Iberia; faithful caregivers, Shirley Case and Frances LeBlanc, both of New Iberia; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Bross Phillips; his parents, Jesse and Dora Collins Phillips; and a sister, Mildred Phillips Hare.

Pallbearers are Jimmy Laperouse, Timothy and David Phillips III, Christopher and Steven Schwing, and James Schwing Jr.

Ollie J. DeCoux

ERATH - Services for Ollie Joseph "Jacque" DeCoux, 80, were held at 10 a.m. today at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with the Rev. Wayne Duet officiating. Entombment was in the church mausoleum.

A native of Erath and a resident of rural Erath, Mr. DeCoux died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at his residence.

Mr. DeCoux worked for Texaco for more than 40 years.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Romero DeCoux of Erath; three daughters, Virginia A. and Barbara J. DeCoux, both of Erath, and Betty A. DeCoux of Abbeville; four brothers, Doris and Eugene DeCoux, both of Coteau, Nelson DeCoux of Loreauville, and Lawrence DeCoux of Erath; one stepbrother, C.D. DeCoux of Erath; two sisters, Aline Mouton of New Iberia, and Enith Bourque of Delcambre; two grandchildren, Raquel Romero of Erath, and Michelle Romero of Abbeville; four great-grandchildren, Jake Romero, and Taylor and Kevin Bourque Jr., all of Erath, and Trey Frederick of Abbeville; and a special friend, Amanda G. Melancon of Erath.

Mr. DeCoux was preceded in death by his parents, Cyriac and Lauria Menard DeCoux; four sons, Curley, David, Gayle P. and Ollie Joseph DeCoux Jr.; one daughter, Shirley DeCoux; three brothers, Dennis, Robert and T-Neg DeCoux; and one sister, Lylia Mouton.

Jordan B. Alexander

CARENCRO - Graveside services for Jordan Bryant Alexander, infant, were held at 10 a.m. today in Evangeline Memorial Gardens cemetery with Deacon Eugene Waguespack officiating.

Jordan died Tuesday, June 25, 2000, at Columbia Women's and Children's Hospital in Lafayette.

He is survived by his parents, Jeremy Alexander and Shantel Sherwood, both of New Iberia; his maternal grandparents, Gary and Cheryl Sherwood of Carencro, and Wanda and Keith Meyers of New Iberia; his paternal grandparents, David and Denyse Alexander, and Janice Alexander, all of Alabama; four aunts, Meagan and Sarah Sherwood, and Jamie and Carol Meyers; and one uncle, Brent Sherwood.

Mayo T. Young

Services for Mayo T. "Jake" Young, 90, will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church with Monsignor Guy Lemoine officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. today with a 7 p.m. rosary at David Funeral Home North, Trotter St., which will reopen Friday from 8 a.m. until the time of services.

A native of Bentley, born on Dec. 14, 1909, and a resident of New Iberia, Mr. Young died peacefully at his home at 6 a.m. Wednesday, July 26, 2000.

Mr. Young was trained as a civil engineer and was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and was a former member of the Corps of Engineers.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alma David Young of New Iberia; three sons, David T. Young, and his wife, Cynthia, of Ann Arbor, Mich., Michael T. Young of Youngsville, and Richard A. Young, and his wife, Millie, of Briley, Colo.; two daughters, Susan Y. Sonnier, and her husband, Shelton, of Carencro, and Mary A. Suire, and her husband, Phillip, of New Iberia; one sister, Evelyn Y. Fruge of West Monroe; 16 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

Mr. Young was preceded in death by his parents, Thad Wiley and Lillian Owens Young; and three brothers and three sisters.

Pallbearers will be Shelton Sonnier, Chad and Phillip Suire, and David, Michael and Richard Young.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jeremy and Loren Young.

JEANERETTE - Services for Rev. Wilmer Castle Sr., 94, will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Jerusalem Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Moncriffe officiating. Interment will be in Beau Pre cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church.

A resident of Jeanerette for many years, Rev. Castle died at 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 24, 2000, at Consolata Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.

Rev. Castle was a minister of the Union Sixth District, a member of the Young Ministers Alliance and a former member of Evergreen Lodge 31 Free and Accepted Masons. He ministered the following churches: Nazarene Baptist Church in Little Woods, Galillee Baptist Church in Jeanerette, Little Zorah Baptist Church in Olivier, Zion Travelers Baptist Church in Neco Town, Mount Olive Baptist Church in Alice C., St. John Baptist Church in Charenton, Emmanuel Baptist Church in Franklin, and New Zorah in Morgan City.

He is survived by four sons, Dennis Castle of Austin, Texas, James Castle of Baton Rouge, and Lawrence and Wilmer Castle Jr., both of Jeanerette; six daughters, Lucille Green of Round Rock, Texas, Alice Castle and Yolanda Chanet, both of Baton Rouge, Edna Wheeler of Phoenix, Ariz., Lillian Castle Lewis of Saginaw, Mich., and Genevieve Jolivette of Bronx, N.Y.; 20 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 33 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Rev. Castle was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Castle; his parents, Charlie Castle Sr. and Alice Augustine Castle; two brothers, Johnny and Charlie Castle Jr.; and three sisters, Betty Lewis, Nellie Castle and Ora Provost.

Pallbearers will be Wendell, Stacy and Roychester Green Jr., Joseph Jones, Brian and Rogernick Castle, and Shelby and Corwin Francis.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lawrence, James, Dennis and Wilmer Castle Jr., Sidney Chanet and Roychester Green Sr.
