Visitation will be from 4-8:30 p.m. today at Delhomme Funeral Home, which will reopen Saturday from 8 a.m. until the time of services.

A native of St. Paul, Minn., and a resident of Lafayette, Mr. Lang was born Oct. 24, 1900, in St. Paul, Minn., the seventh of eight children born to Frank and Mary Lange. His father and his uncle Mike owned and operated the Lange Brothers Cement Co. in St. Paul where Bernard worked until 1919 when he went to work for the Interstate Commerce Commission surveying land for the railroads. This job eventually led him to Louisiana where he was convinced to enroll at what was then Southwestern Louisiana Institute (ULL). There he earned a degree in education, lettered in four sports and met and married his wife of 68 years, Myrtle Marie Mader. After eight years as head coach and assistant principal at Lafayette High School, Bernard attended Notre Dame University on a scholarship from the Knights of Columbus. Upon earning a master's degree in sociology, he went to work for the Boy Scouts of American in St. Paul/Minneapolis until 1934 when he was lured back to Lafayette as executive director of the Evangeline Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. He retired from that position at age 65 and began his fourth career in real estate as a salesman for Dan Ritchey's company where he remained until Dan's retirement. "Pops" continued in real estate sales with another company until age 88 when he retired for good to care for his wife who died in 1993. He was an avid golfer until age 90. He fathered two sons, Bernard Anthony "Binky" Lang Jr., deceased, and George Mader Lang Sr., a resident of Lafayette.

It was as a student at SLI that Mr. Lang acquired his nickname "Pops"- he was a bit older than his classmates. He also dropped the "e" from Lange so it would not be pronounced in a French fashion. It was at this time that he met for the first time a lovely coed at St. Joseph's Academy in Bay St. Louis, Myrtle Marie Mader, a native of New Orleans. She too became a student at SLI. It was in 1934 that "Pops" began at 31-year stint as executive director of the Evangeline Area Council of the Boy Scouts. Thousands of boys in the seven council area would serve under his tutelage, held in high esteem by his "troops".

When "Pops" began this new venture there were 12 troops with 355 scouts. By 1965 there were 210 troops and 5,825 scouts. It was also during his tenure that Camp Thistlewaite was acquired as a gift from the Thistlewaite family.

"Pop" has had a number of passions over his many decades. Foremost among them has been his love for golf. Except on the very hottest of summer days, he walked the course and continued to do so until he was 90. Another passion was dancing! He was a superb dancer in classic ballroom style. Myrtle was more than a match for him, but in an evening he would find scores of partners. Partygoers years younger would marvel at his stamina and grace.

The house that "Pops" and Myrtle built close to old Lafayette High, now Lafayette Middle School, was located on lots purchased in 1934 for $500. "Pops" used to tease about haggling with a Mr. Cornay about the price. The clincher he would relate was when Mr. Cornay said he would name the street after Mrs. Lang if "Pops" bought the lot - and so we have Myrtle Place Boulevard!

Throughout his years in Lafayette, "Pops" had been a "doer". He had been a member of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Parish since 1935, chairman of Lafayette's first Playground and Parks Commission, chairman of the United Way Big Gifts Committee, chairman of Red Cross Safety Committee, president of ULL Alumni Association, president and long-time member of the Rotary Club, recipient of the Boys Scouts' Silver Beaver and Distinguished Citizens Award and was a member of both the Louisiana and the National Real Estate Boards. As previously noted, he was also a charter member of Oakbourne Country Club.

Mr. Lang is survived by his son, George Lang, and his wife, Dana, of Lafayette; his daughter-in-law, Shirley Lang of Clearlake, Texas; six grandchildren, Valerie Lang Smith, and her husband, Barney, of Pearland, Texas, Bernie Lang, and his wife, Carrie, of The Woodlands, Texas, David Lang, and his wife, Donna, of League City, Texas, Marie Lang Kenner, and her husband, Mike, of Clearlake, Texas, George Lang Jr. of Lafayette, and Alison Lang Cravey, and her husband, Ryan, of Houston; five great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be George Lang Jr., David and Bernie Lang, Barney Smith, Michael Keener and James Alpha.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Zerben Bienvenu, A.H. "Happy" Bryan Jr., William R. Bullen Jr., Dr. H.P. Chastant, E.M. "Chris" Christensen, Robert M. Cordell, Sidney C. Ory and Judge Kaliste Saloom.
