Cortez
Beulah Roberts Cortez, a native of Hahnville and resident of Dubberly, Passed away on Aug. 5, 2004. She was 83 years old.

She is survived by her husband, Ernest J. Cortez Jr., sons Richard Foster, Stanley Foster, Lane Foster and Ernest Cortez III, grandchildren Angela Brien, Denise Matherne, Amie Knuppel, Renee Decuers, Tammy Foster, Jason Foster, Michael Foster, Jamie Foster, Lane Foster Jr., Britt Foster, Charlie Foster, Charmaine Cortez, Evan Cortez, Katie Cortez and Emma Cortez, 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by her parents, Emile and Rita Friloux Roberts, and her grandson Stanley Foster Jr.

Religious services were held on Aug. 9 at the Mennonite Church in Des Allemands.

Cupit
Norma Mae Cupit, retired owner of a Western Auto store, died on Aug. 21, 2004 at Kenner Regional Medical Center. She was 77 years old.

Mrs. Cupit was born in New Orleans and lived in Norco for the past 44 years. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Reif and Sandy Mannear, and six grandchildren. A funeral was held at St. Charles United Methodist Church in Destrehan, followed by burial at St. Charles Borromeo Mausoleum.

Dufrene
Rose Mary LeBlanc Dufrene, a native of Chocktaw and resident of Luling, Passed away on Aug. 5, 2004. She was 67 years old.

She is survived by her son, Todd Dufrene, daughters Patricia Stanley, Cindy Breaux, Claire Matherne and Valerie Brown, sisters Agnes Galliano, Daisy Comardelle, Helen Menely and Theresa Evans, and 11 grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her companion James J. Dufrene Sr., parents Norbert LeBlanc and Clarice Hebert LeBlanc , brother Van LeBlanc and sisters Clara Landry and Ruth LeBlanc .

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Aug. 7.

Evans
Lonie Landry Evans, a native of Darrow and resident of Gretna and Harvey, died at her home on Aug. 14, 2004. She was 88 years old.

Beloved wife of the late Frank E. Evans, Jr., mother of Sally E. Church of Luling, Diane M. Evans, Frank E. Evans III, Michael D. Evans and Nancy V. Evans; mother-in-law of Donald Dean Church, Maureen White Evans, and Rachel Vasquez Evans; daughter of the late Ellen Marchand Landry and Olibert Paul Landry; sister of Sue Eunice Horrigan, the late Ellen Landry, Ethel Robert and Percy Landry. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church on Aug. 17.

Ford
Diana Marie Dempster Ford, a native of Westwego and resident of Paradis, Passed away on Aug. 28, 2004. She was 61 years old.

She is survived by her husband, Ray Paul Ford, sons Troy, Kim and Kerry Fonseca, stepdaughters Lisa Ford and Rachel Bemis, sisters Shirley Bourgeois, Gloria Holleman, Grace Warino and Pansy D’Angelo, three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter F. and Ida B. Dempster, brothers Walter B. and Adlis J. Dempster, and sisters Azalia Fritchman, Ruby Lee Julia and Marjorie Berard.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Aug. 30 at St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Des Allemands, followed by burial at Resurrection Memorial Park Cemetery in Raceland.

Giangrosso
Anna Mae V. Giangrosso, age 90, died on Aug. 24, 2004 at St. Joseph Nursing Home in Harahan. She was born in Loreauville and lived in Norco for 60 years. Wife of the late Freddie Giangroso; mother of three sons, Frederick, Bernard and Gerald Giangrosso; mother-in-law of Dorothy, Barbara and Marian Giangrosso; daughter of the late Annette R. Verret and the late Dernquille Verret; sister of Joyce Dautherive and the late Allen C. Verret, the late Curtis Verret and the late Ethel Keller; grandmother of four and great-grandmother of two. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Aug. 26 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norco. Entombment was at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Mausoleum in Destrehan.

Keller
Pearl Marie Becnel Keller died at her home of natural causes on Aug. 17, 2004. Beloved wife of the late Eddie Keller, she is survived by her loving “daughter” and niece, Jan Weber Mauduit and son-in-law Dale Mauduit; nieces and their spouses Carolyn Mel DeJean, Stephanie and Kenneth Patrick, Michele and Barry, Florence and Sylvia Chauvin, and by her siblings, Lut Becnel, Sydney Becnel, Al Becnel, Rita Becnel Weber, Grace Becnel Keller and Mary Becnel Braud, and numerous other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Joseph Sydney Becnel and Malvina Marie Bossier, siblings Roy Becnel, Dickie Becnel and Louise Becnel Babin and great-niece Renee Mauduit.

Funeral services were held on Aug. 20 at Sacred Hearth Catholic Church in Norco, followed by entombment at St. Charles Borromeo Mausoleum.

Lucky
Joel “Joe” Lucky of Luling Passed away on Aug. 28, 2004. Beloved husband of Joan Amos Lucky; father of Joel S. Lucky and Stafford C. Lucky; father-in-law of Kristie Lucky and Julie Lucky; son of the late Benjamin C. Lucky and Dana Bauman Lucky; grandfather of Madison Lucky, Mason Lucky, Jordan Lucky and Carson Lucky. Mr. Lucky was a collector of antique memorabilia and antique cara. He was retired from Monsanto and was a Realtor, a member of First Baptist Church in Luling and the first Republican to run for office in St. Charles Parish.

Memorial services were held on Aug. 30 at First Baptist Church in Luling. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Matherne
Dee R. Matherne, a native and resident of Hahnville, Passed away on Aug. 23, 2004. He was 31 years old.

He is survived by his former wife, Pam Anderson Matherne, parents Richard and Pam Matherne, grandfather Harry Matherne, Grandmother Sybil T. Naquin, sister Kelli Matherne and her companion Sandi Brignac. He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Albert Naquin, and grandmother Bernadine P. Matherne.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Aug. 25 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hahnville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Lyphoma and Leukemia Society or the Catch-24 Scholarship Foundation.

Matherne
Verlie Plaisance Matherne, a native of Gheens and resident of Raceland, Passed away on Aug. 13, 2004. She was 70 years old.

She is survived by her husband, Percy Lee Matherne, son Dean Matherne and his wife Roxanne, daughter Paula Schouest and her husband Milton Jr., Penny Savoie and her husband Brian, April Detiveaux and her husband Edward Jr., brothers Spergin, Levy Jr., Michael, David, Chris and Tommy Plaisance, sisters Leanne Dufrene, Genelle Cheramie and Judy Lapeyrousse, and seven grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Levy and Pauline Matherne Plaisance and stepmother Adelia Plaisance.

A parishoner at St. Hilary of Poitiers Catholic Church, she was also an Avon representative and member of the Ladies Altar Society, V.F.W. and Knights of Columbus and a volunteer at the V.A. Hospital of New Orleans and Raceland Manor.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Aug. 16 at St. Hilary of Poitiers Catholic Church in Mathews, followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Raceland.

Mitchell
Gertrude L. Mitchell, a native of Plaucheville and resident of LaPlace, Passed away on Aug. 26, 2004 in LaPlace. She was 87 years old. Wife of the late Lance Joseph Mitchell, daughter of the late Placd and Irene Bonette Lemoine, mother of Jacqueline Mitchell Robert, Norco, Ernest L. Mitchell, Slidell, and the late Raymond M. Mitchell, sister of the late Henry, Paul, Lester and Eddie Lemoine, Nell Mejia and Verdie Voisell. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Aug. 30 at Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church in LaPlace.

Nicholas
Jay Baptiste Nicholas, a native of Taft and resident of Luling, Passed away on Aug. 22, 2004. He was 86 years old.

He is survived by his wife, Cecile Bergeron Nicholas, son Brian Nicholas, sisters Lydia Bergeron and Julia Tastet and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jean Baptiste Nicholas and Regina Champagne Nicholas, and sisters Lena Russo, Irene Horn and Inez Hickey.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Aug. 24 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Luling, followed by burial at St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery.

Peyregne
Felix J. Peyregne, a native of Ama and resident of Des Allemands, Passed away on Aug. 16, 2004. He was 80 years old.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Cortez Peyregne, son Philip Peyregne, daughters Phyllis Comardelle and Kathy Sigmon, grandchildren Philip Peyregne Jr., Joey Peyregne, William Sigmon, Steven Sigmon and Courtney Comardelle, and great-grandchild Kaid Comardelle. He is preceded in death by his parents, Felix E. and Elmira Zeringue Peyregne. Mr. Peyregne was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Aug. 19 at St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Des Allemands.
