Tony Baglio

A lifelong resident of Independence, Tony Passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at his residence. He was a retired farmer and proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during WWII. Tony was a member of Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church.

He is survived by his only son, Anthony B. Baglio and his wife, Margaret Varisco Baglio; grandson, Mario Blaze Baglio; sister, Lucy Baglio, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Tony in death were his wife, Emily M. Baglio; parents, Blaze and Lena Mancuso Baglio; five sisters, Carmella, Bessie, Lena, Mary and Rosie;

four brothers, Joe, Vic, Charlie and James.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial from Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Fr. Howard Adkins. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the church from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Entombment will be in Colonial Mausoleum.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home of Hammond.

Jeanette Shaffer Gregoire

Age 61 and a longtime resident of Pumpkin Center, Jeanette Passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2010. She was a retired school teacher after 21 years of employment with Tucker Elementary.

She is survived by her husband, Ronnie Gregoire; three sons, Devin Wayne Gregoire & wife Jolie, Rusty Carter Gregoire and wife Monique, Derrick Wade Gregoire; three grandchildren, Nicholas Michael, Myrisa Jolie, Mya Jolie and one grandchild on the way. Jeanette is also survived by her sister, Sherry Tomsic; two brothers, James Allen Shaffer and Jay Robert Shaffer, along with her best friend, Pat Starkey.

Preceding Jeanette in death were her parents, Ambrose and Eunice Shaffer; a brother, Audie Joseph Shaffer.

Funeral Services were held at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Pumpkin Center on Monday, January 18, 2010 at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Rev. Randal Pike.

interment followed in the church cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home of Hammond.

Joseph Louis "Catfish Joe" Helg

Joseph Louis "Catfish Joe" Helg, 59, of Hammond, died Saturday, January 16, 2010, at North Oaks Hospital. He was born October 5, 1950, in New Orleans.

Surviving are his wife, Diane Marie Helg; 2 daughters, Bobbie Jo Drago, Corina Ann Hutchinson and husband, David; 3 sons, Jeremiah Otto Helg, Joseph Louis Helg II, Jordan Lee Helg; 1 sister, Elaine Cutrer; 4 grandchildren, Sarah Drago, Clint Drago, Brooklynn Helg, David Hutchinson, III.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Otto & Aimee Rodriguez Helg; 1 brother, Jimmy Lessard and 1 son-in-law, Brian Drago.

Friends will be received Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM.

A Memorial Service will begin at 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel.

Steve Anthony Bruno

Steve Anthony Bruno, 92, of Independence, died Thursday, December 24, 2009, at his residence.

He was born on Sunday, April 29, 1917, in Independence, son of the late Nick and Lena Bruno.

Mr. Bruno was retired from the Southeastern Louisiana University maintenance department, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of the American Legion, Post 109, Independence.

Surviving are his wife of sixty-three years, Annie Vicari Bruno; 2 sons & daughters-in-law, Nick and Linda Bruno and Carlo and Donna Bruno; 6 grandchildren, Steven, Victoria, Christina, Dustin, Ryan, and Dana Bruno, and a great-granddaughter, Ava Bruno.

He is preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude B. Junda, two brothers, Joseph and Brazile "Noodle" Bruno.

Friends will be received Monday, December 28, 2009 at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, Independence, from 9 am until the 11 am Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by Rev. Howard R. Adkins. interment will follow in the Colonial Cemetery, Independence,

Rachel Fay Guidroz Cupit

Rachel Fay Guidroz Cupit, 83 years old of Ponchatoula, Louisiana , died Sunday, December 20, 2009, in Specialty Long Term Care Hospital of Hammond.

She was born on Wednesday, December 1, 1926, in Franklin, Louisiana , daughter of the late Vital Guidroz and the late Aspasie Guidroz.

Surviving are son & daughter-in-law, Kenneth R. & Gail Cupit; daughter, Cheryl A. Cupit; grandchild, Nichole M. Frazer; 2 grandsons and their wives, Kevin W. & Angi Cupit, Brad A. & Maren Cupit; grandchildren, Craig M., Scott A., and Brandon M. Cupit; great-grandchildren, Laurel, Brant & Laney Cupit.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Cupit Jr. and brother & sister-in-law Melvin G. & Morgie Shaw Guidroz; 3 sisters & brothers-in-law: Odette & Jeff Rodgers, Isabel & Earl Armstrong and Janet & John Naquin; daughter Kay Frazer; nephew Jerry Guidroz; great -nephew Christopher Cupit.

Friends will be received from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Monday, December 28, 2009, at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula. Services will be held at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. interment will follow in the Springfield Cemetery.

Kristopher Nathan Forrest

Kristopher Nathan Forrest, a lifelong resident of Ponchatoula, died from an accidental injury in his home on December 24, 2009.

Kris was born April 6, 1974, and was 35 years old. Kris' wife, Ashley Alford Forrest, is devastated at his loss. They had celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary on June 20, 2009.

Kris and Ashley have one child, Mason Bedford Forrest, who is 6 years old. Kris was a wonderful, faithful, considerate, loving and supportive husband and father. Kris was honest, hardworking, generous, kind, intelligent and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was respected by anyone who knew him and loved by his family and friends. Kris was enthusiastically pursuing ASE certification at the time of his death. Kris' death will leave a void that can never be filled.

Kris is also survived by his grief-stricken family members, parents, Michael and Sheila Forrest, brother, Kyle, and sister, Ashley, and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lucille Forrest, all of Ponchatoula, and maternal grandmother, Mrs. Gerri Bordelon, Kenner, and his mother-in-law, Kathy Conn Alford, Amite.

Kris was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Bernard A. Bordelon, Sr., and Julius D. Forrest, maternal uncle, Bernard A. Bordelon, Jr., and his grandmother by marriage, Ellen L. Conn, and Aunt by marriage, Vicky Conn Cavaretta, of Amite.

McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, has been entrusted with arrangements.

Arthur Ronald "Ronnie" Hayden

Arthur Ronald “Ronnie” Hayden was born February 8, 1947 and Passed away at 12:14 p.m. on Saturday, December 26, 2009 at his residence in Amite. Ronnie was 62 and also a native of Amite.

Ronnie is survived by his wife, Claudette Schiro Hayden, Amite; a son, Michael Hayden and wife Leigh, Kentwood; a daughter, Jacqueline Hayden Joiner and husband Travis, Amite; 2 sisters, Rose Fagan, Hammond and Nita Lea and husband Frank, Amite; 5 grandchildren, Taylor Joiner, Brent Joiner, Kayla Hayden, Kyle Hayden and Nicolas Hayden; 3 step-grandchildren, Michael Briggs, Stephen Briggs and Ashleigh Briggs.

Preceded in death by parents, Arthur and Orvil Stafford Hayden; 3 brothers, Billy N., Carl and Steve Hayden.

Visitation will be at McKneely & Vaughn Funeral Home, Amite, on Monday, December 28, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 from 8:00 a.m. until Religious Services at 10:00 a.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. John Fulda officiating. interment in the Arcola-Roseland Cemetery, Roseland, LA.

Margie Devenport Hoffman

Margie Devenport Hoffman, born July 31, 1935, a native of New Orleans and resident of Independence, quietly Passed away at home with her family by her side at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, December 24, 2009, at age 74.

She fought a courageous battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Margie was a beautiful person who touched so many lives. Her kind, caring, compassionate spirit will live on in the lives of those who knew her. She loved to spend time, especially the holidays, with family who will miss her dearly.

Margie attended Nichols High School in New Orleans. She received her GED much later in life as she unselfishly cared for her family and raised four children. She worked many years as a telephone/switchboard operator and a bookkeeper. She went on to earn her certification as a real estate agent. But her most prized and precious roles in life were those of daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother - no one could have ever hoped and prayed for better.

She was preceded in death by her beloved father, Joseph Seymour Devenport, Sr., her devoted mother, Margaret “Tuttie” Nehlig Devenport, her precious sister, Shirley Mae Devenport, and her loving brother Joseph S. Devenport, Jr.

She is survived by her loving, devoted husband of 52 years, Gregory Charles Hoffman, Sr., devoted sister Dianne D. Cox and her husband Danny, beloved son Gregory Charles Hoffman, Jr and his wife Sharon, and her devoted daughters, Christine Ragas and her husband John, Suzanne Ruch and her husband Jerry, and Rebecca Jones and her husband Donnie. She is also survived by 13 loving grandchildren: Chris and his wife Rachel, William and his wife Guiliana, Tara and her husband Ryan, Ashley, Bobby, Greg III, Jessica, Shelbi, Courtni, Megann, Bradlee, Alex and Christian. Margie also leaves behind 8 precious great-grandchildren: Bryce, Taylor , Ryan, Donovan, Harley, Lane, Brayden and Sophia. As well as a host of nieces, nephews and family members whose lives will forever be enriched by her memory.

“Although we walk this earth in search of the truth, a better place with those whom have gone before us await with open arms to welcome us home.” In His holy name we pray. Amen. John and Christine Ragas.

A memorial service will be held at Harry McKneely Funeral Home in Hammond on Monday, December 28, 2009 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. with a Catholic service at 6:00 pm. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the American Cancer Society, specified for Breast Cancer Research.

Doris Elvina Purvis Jones

Doris Elvina Purvis Jones, age 84, died on December 23, 2009 at Oshsner Hospital in Baton Rouge.

She was a native of Holden and resident of Walker. Survivors include 5 sons, Tom Jones, Michael W. Jones, Arthur E. Jones, Jr., John W. "Gus" Jones and his wife, Mary, and Timothy G. Jones; one daughter, Patricia Ann Jones; one brother, Harold E. Purvis; and 25 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur E. Jones, Sr; 2 sisters; 3 brothers and her parents.

Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Geisler Funeral Home of Albany on Sunday, Dec.27 from 6 until 9 pm and on Monday after 8:30 am until the religious service at 10 am. interment will follow in Bankston Cemetery. Geisler Funeral Home in Albany in charge of arrangements.

Merril M. Stoetzner Kovach

Native of Albany and resident of Litchfield, Ohio, Merril M. Stoetzner Kovach, age 87, Passed away on December 17, 2009 at Medina General Hospital.

She was retired from Deaconess Hospital, where she had been employed as a nurse.

She leaves behind her children, Pat Wagner and husband Dave of Lafayette Township, Ohio, Rosemary Steven and husband Andy of Litchfield, Ohio and Steve Kovach and wife Brenda of Stockbridge, GA.; grandchildren, Terri, Christine, Molly, Debbie, Michelle, Rob, Amy and Karen, along with 13 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her loving sister, Erma Whitehead.

Preceding Ms. Merril in death were her beloved husband, Steve A. Kovach; siblings, Bea Tipton and Walter Stoetzner.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services from Bethlehem Baptist Church, 29350 S. Montpelier Ave., Albany, La. 70711 on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. Rev. Joe Dunn will officiate the services and interment will follow in the Hungarian Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home of Hammond.
