William "Bill" F. Hughes

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather succumbed to his courageous battle with cancer on July 12, 2009 at the age of 76. He was a native of Roseland, a resident of Amite and a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Camilla Ammons Davidson Hughes; daughters, Ann Marie Hughes Banos and husband, Orlando, Austin, TX, and Brenda Darlene Hughes, Walker, LA; sons, Johnny Lamar Hughes and wife, Gaisha, Tickfaw, LA and Michael Wayne Hughes and wife, Tracey, Walker, LA; stepdaughter, Ann Davidson Wax, Denham Springs, LA and stepson, Thomas H. Davidson, Sr. and wife, Judy, Denham Springs, LA; brothers, Jesse Edward Hughes, Baton Rouge, LA and Gary F. Hughes and wife, Shirley, Killian, LA; sisters, Faye Breeland and husband Carl, Amite, LA, Betty McMichael and husband, Leonard, Brenda Phillips and husband, James, and Linda Sands and husband, Donald, all of Roseland, LA; 17 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar R. Hughes and Inez Jones Odom and stepmother, Nina K. Hughes.

Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home of Amite and Kentwood, Inc., 110 E. Factory St., Amite, LA on Monday, July 13, 2009 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and from 9 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, conducted by Pastor Larry Blades and Rev. James Phillips. interment in Tangipahoa Cemetery, Tangipahoa, LA. Pallbearers will be Benjamin T. Wax, Thomas H. Davidson, Jr., Trey Banos, Alex Banos, John Pritchett and Brandon Phillips. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Richard Murphy Hospice Foundation, 16013 Halbert Lane, Hammond, LA 70403 or Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, 64671 Hwy. 1054, Roseland, LA 70456.

The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Richard Murphy Hospice House for their very special care and comfort and to the E. R. "Bud" Glasgow family for their love and support.

William Paul Hughes

William Paul Hughes, 52 years old of Pumpkin Center, LA, died Sunday, July 12, 2009, from a massive stroke in North Oaks Medical Center

He was born on Thursday, December 6, 1956, in Hammond.

Surviving are mother, Carolyn Bell Hughes Neal; sisters, Vickie Hughes McCarroll, Jennie Ellen Hughes and Carol Ann Hughes; brother, Thomas Eugene Hughes; also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

He is preceded in death by father, John Hughes; grandparents, William and Mamie Bell and John and Iva Hughes.

Friends will be received Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond from 6:00p.m. until 9:00p.m. and on Wednesday from 8:00a.m. until services.

Services will be held in the funeral home chapel, Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 10:00a.m.

interment will follow in the Jerusalem Baptist Church Cemetery, Pumpkin Center, Louisiana 70403.

Zellee Holmes Oliphant

Mrs. Oliphant was born on September 2, 1913 and Passed away on July 11, 2009 at 7:15 p.m. She retired from B.B. Bennett Sewing Factory in New Orleans, LA. Zellee also worked for a drug store. Zellee Oliphant was a graduate of Kentwood High School. During World War II, Zellee and her sister, Gladys Young, worked at Delta Ship Yard. The company honored them for their efforts and dedication through the war. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilton Oliphant; mother, Lottie Holmes; father, Joseph Kirby Holmes; 2 sisters, Gladys Young and Beulah Ramsey; 3 brothers, Odell Holmes, Edison Holmes and J. C. Holmes; 2 brother-in-laws, John Ramsey and J. W. Young. She is survived by Katie Jones, Johnie Booty and his family, Tracie Luper and her family, Alton Booty and his family, Tommy Seiger and his family, Heather Yeager, Rachael Booty, Oliver Young and his family, Scott Jones and his family, David Young and his family. Visitation will be at McKneely Funeral Home of Amite and Kentwood, 501 Ave. G, Kentwood, from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 and from 8 a.m. until religious services at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2009. Services will be conducted by Rev. Percy Mac Frazier, Rev. Clay Spinks and Rev. Gibbie McMillan.

interment will follow in Woodland Cemetery, Kentwood. Pallbearers will be Johnie Booty, Alton Booty, Keith Luper, Jonathon Booty, Brad Yarbrough, Oliver Young, Tommy Seiger and Scott Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Yarbrough, Richie Yarbrough, Jordan Luper, Jimmy Luper, Davin Booty, Jacob Booty, Jace Booty, Jay Young and Tommy Seiger, Jr.

David Ibberson Perkins

Mr. David Ibberson Perkins, 82 years old of Ponchatoula, died Sunday, July 12, 2009, in North Oaks Medical Center.

He was born on Wednesday, October 13, 1926, in Minnesota, son of the late William and Mary Ann Ibberson Perkins, and moved to Hammond, Louisiana as a youth with his family. He enlisted at the age of 16 in the U.S. Coast Guard and escorted convoys across the North Atlantic providing protection from German U-boat attacks. When the Coast Guard discovered his true age and discharged him, he promptly enlisted in the Marine Corps and spent the rest of the war fighting the Japanese in the South Pacific. Following his military service he briefly enrolled in college, but soon left and became a master brick mason. A back injury led to a distinguished career of over 40 years in law enforcement working for the U.S. Border Patrol, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Louisiana State Police and Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office. He retired from both the State Police and Sheriff's Office with the rank of Major. His many interests included competitive sports, hunting, and fishing. He was a longtime LHSAA football official, an umpire for Ponchatoula youth baseball and a founding member of Ponchatoula Little Conference Football. He was a lifetime member of the Ponchatoula Volunteer Fire Department and served 12 years on the town council. He was also an ordained Baptist minister and a member of the Free Masons.

Surviving are his wife, Bernice Walker Perkins and 2 sons, Marion Fannaly, Michael Fannaly; daughter, Cindy Fannaly; 5 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Ann Perkins Dufreche; brothers, William Rupert Perkins Jr. and Thomas U. Perkins.

Friends will be received Tuesday, July 14, 2009, from 9:00 am until 11:00 am at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula.

Services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 11:00 am with Dr. Rodney Taylor officiating.

interment will follow in the Ponchatoula Cemetery in Ponchatoula.

Alpha Russell Perrin

Mrs. Alpha Russell Perrin of Ponchatoula, age 97, went home to be with her Lord, Friday evening July 10. Mrs. Perrin, a native of Brookhaven, MS, and a resident, of Ponchatoula for about 70 years died at the home of her daughter near Ponchatoula. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Mrs. Perrin was a long time member of the French Corner Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter Mrs. Alpha “Connie” Perrin Roussel, sons William E. “Bill” Perrin, Jr., and James M. “Jim” Perrin, all of Ponchatoula, three granddaughters Charlotte Louise Perrin Revere, Marilyn Gail Perrin, and Chalise Michelle Perrin Ott, and five great-grandsons. Mrs. Perrin was preceded in death by her husband William E. Perrin, a granddaughter Elizabeth Ann “Beth” Perrin, her parents, three brothers and five sisters.

Visitation will be at the Harry McKneely and Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula Sunday evening from 6:00 to 9:00, and Monday from 9:00 until the funeral at 10:00, with interment in the Ponchatoula Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the French Corner Church Building Fund, 39715 Teel Road, Ponchatoula, in her name.

Benjamin Franklin Allen

Died at 6:47PM on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, LA. He was a native of Loranger, LA and a resident of Amite, LA. Age 77 years. He retired as a driver for Greyhound with over 30 years of service and was a U.S.A.F. veteran of Korea. Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, from 9 a.m. on Friday until religious services at 11 a.m. Friday. Services conducted by Rev. Marshall Wallace. interment Briar Patch Cemetery, Loranger, LA.

Survived by daughter, Joan Brumfield, Meadville, MS, son, Michael Allen, Amite, 2 sisters, Mary Jane King, Amite, Lerlene Holden, Amite. Preceded in death by, wife, Doris U. Allen, 3 brothers.

Annie Matil Ezell

Age 89 and a longtime resident of Hammond, Ms. Matil Passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2009 at Landmark Nursing Home. She was the owner of Ezell’s Furniture Upholstery in Ponchatoula.

She is survived by her children, Lyn Dwight Ezell Sr., Ronald Henry Ezell Sr., Darrell Allen Ezell, Merriel Aliene Sanchez, Mary Annette Easley and Dianne Marie Easley, along with nineteen grandchildren, forty two great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding Ms. Matil in death were her husband, Daniel Allen Ezell; parents, John David Jarrell and Mary Canizer Rester Jarrell; brothers, Bill, Vollie, Robert, Alex, John, and Houston Jarrell; an infant brother T. J. Jarrell; a sister, Flora Ennis, along with infant sisters, Mary Jane and Gladys Mae Jarrell.

Funeral Services were held at Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. interment took place in Parklawn Memorial Gardens.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home of Hammond.

Larry Wirth Jacobson

Larry Wirth Jacobson, 60 years old of Hammond, LA, died Thursday, July 16, 2009, in North Oaks Medical Center.

He was born on Monday, July 4, 1949, in New Orleans.

Larry was a retired as a commercial pilot. He was a Shriner a Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite and also Ham Radio enthusiast.

Surviving are wife, Dianne LaRue Streety; daughter & son-in-law, Amanda Jacobson and Chad Mays; step-son and his wife, Sidney and Michelle Falgout III; mother, Marty Clark; grandchildren, Bryan and Haley Falgout.

He is preceded in death by father, Melville Jacobson; brother, Donald P. Jacobson.

Graveside services will be held at Holly Gardens Cemetery, Friday, July 17, 2009 at 3:00p.m.

Alice Geneva Bigner Savoy

Alice Geneva Bigner Savoy, 87 years old, lifelong resident of Pumpkin Center, LA, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at her residence.

Alice was born on Saturday, July 16, 1921.

Surviving are husband of 68 years, Leon Joseph Savoy ; daughter, Beverly Savoy Anderson; son & daughter-in-law, Bruce and Dot Savoy; son, Frank Savoy; sister, Nell Kinchen; brothers, Rollie and Edgar Bigner; grandchildren, Lee Savoy, Toni Savoy Gregoire, Dale Vernon, Jim Anderson, Tim Vernon, Melissa Savoy and April Holden; great-grandchildren, Ryan Coates, Sydney Gregoire, Noah Vernon, Alyssa Vernon, Safarie Vernon, Eli Gregoire and Wyiatt Holden; also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by parents, Hugh Bignar Sr and Idelia Gatlin Bignar; brothers, Ellis and Amos Starkey; sisters; Carlene Lavigne and Patsy McKinney.

Friends will be received at Springfield First United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 18, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. until services.

Services will be held at Springfield First Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Emile Tasso officiating.

interment will follow in the Jerusalem Baptist Church Cemetery in Pumpkin Center.

Jennie Belle Cutrer Breeden

Died at 1:15AM on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at St. Helena Parish Hospital in Greensburg, LA. She was a native of Osyka, MS and a resident of Liverpool, LA. Age 87 years.

She was a member of Days United Methodist Church, Liverpool and Order of the Eastern Star.

Visitation at Day's United Methodist Church, Liverpool, from 9 a.m. on Monday until religious services at 11 a.m. Monday. Services conducted by Dr. Ralph Ford. interment Day's Cemetery, Greensburg, LA .

Survived by 2 sons, Steve I. Varnado and his wife, Sandra, Greenwell Springs, Jimmie W. Varnado, M.D. and his wife, Peggy, Greensburg, 5 grandchildren, Mike Varnado and his wife, Shelly, Denham Springs, Sheri Varnado Beck and her husband, Michael, Herlong, CA, Angie Varnado Ray and her husband, Billy, Ponchatoula, Jason Varnado, D.D.S. and his wife, Kelsea, New Iberia, Anjanette Varnado Johnson , M.D. and her husband, J.J., Hammond, great-grandchildren, Sarah, Macy and Ashely Varnado, Elisha, Shaina and Carissa Beck, Luke Ray, and Adeline and Grayson Varnado, sister, Minnie Wall, Gillsburg, devoted friend, Tom McCaa, Liverpool.

Preceded in death by her husband, Laurie L. Breeden, parents, George Washington and Carrie Spears Cutrer, 3 brothers, Roy Cutrer, Claude Cutrer and Floyd Cutrer, sister, Martha Alford and Mary Dickey.

Ora Nell Thompson Farris

Ora Nell Thompson Farris, 75 years old of Hammond, a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died Monday, July 20, 2009, in North Oaks Medical Center.

She was born on Wednesday, May 9, 1934, in Hammond, daughter of the late William and Veva Gatlin Thompson.

Surviving are her 2 sons, Peter "Pat" Farris Jr. and his wife Tracy, DeWayne Thompson and his wife Alice; 3 daughters, Mary Ann Farris and her friend Bobby Kiss, Debbie Efferson and her husband Donny, Pam Fisher; 4 grandchildren, Georgette Arthur Petitto and her husband Joe, Hunter Efferson and his wife Jessica, Justin Parent and his wife Jennifer, Haley Fisher; 3 great-grandchildren, Kathryn Kernop, Raygan Efferson, Sean Patrick Efferson; 2 brothers, Louis Thompson, and Fost "Rootbeer" Thompson.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Peter Patrick Farris Sr. and brothers, Lucius, Brent, Newman, Warren, George Thompson and one infant brother.

Friends will be received Wednesday, July 22, 2009, from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm and on Thursday, July 23, 2009 from 8:00 am until 10:15 am at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond.

Services will be held at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Thursday, July 23, 2009, at 10:30 am, with Fr. Cayet Mangiaracina, O.P. officiating.

interment will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Hammond.
