Irene Landry "Grannie" Holden

Irene Landry "Grannie" Holden, age 78 and a resident of Amite, died early Thursday morning at Gulf States LTAC facility in Bogalusa. She was an active member of Sharon Baptist Church until her recent illness made it difficult to attend. She was the widow of Alvie "Jack" Holden, whom she met at 15 during his military service and they married in St. Martinville on June 1, 1946. Together they raised their family and operated a dairy on Snow Creek Road in Tangipahoa Parish for 45 years before retiring and continuing to live on the farm.

She was survived by a daughter Judy Chapman of Amite, 3 Sons and Daughters in law Ted and Beverly Holden of Amite, Bobby and Betty Duck of Liberty, MS, Danny and Felicia Cupit of Amite, 3 Sisters Rose L. Simon of New Iberia, Geraldine M. Freeze of Arkansas, Jeannette M. Broussard of Sulphur, 3 Brothers Earl Melancon of Texas , Raymond Melancon of Florida, Polite Melancon of Lafayette, 10 Grandchildren, 18 Great-grandchildren, 1 Great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jack Holden, a son Wayne Richard Holden, her parents Emmett and Nida Landry, and a sister Rose Landry.

Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home from 9 am until 2:30 pm Saturday June 13th. A funeral service will be held at 3 pm Saturday at Sharon Baptist Church with Eld. Mark Harrison officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers are her grandsons: Richard Wayne, Russell Wade, Wyatt Merle and Sandford Wayne Holden, Darrell Carlisle, Robert Jennings, Nicholas Smith and Van Varnado.

Richard Hill

Richard E. Hill, 72, of Chattanooga, went to be with his Heavenly Father Saturday, May 23, 2009, at home surrounded by his loving family.

Richard was a member of Calvary Bible Church and the Adult Sunday School Class.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Heibeck Hill; three daughters, Victoria (Richard) Dalton, Fort Worth, Texas , Valerie (Michael) Massey, Chattanooga, and Vanora (Brian) LeJeune, Hixson; six grandchildren, Jonathan, Jenna, Jolie and Jillian Dalton, Fort Worth, Michaela and Luke Massey, Chattanooga; three brothers, Robert Hill, South Pasadena, Fla.; G. Wayne Hill, Lancaster, Calif., and William Hill, Natural Dam, Ark., several nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Welton and Lula Mae Hill, and Carl, his brother.

The family would like to thank Connie Hargiss, Valerie Worth and Rachel Bottomly of Hospice of Chattanooga and all the others who provided loving care for Richard.

Burial was in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Caffrey "Pete" Anthony

Age 92 and a lifelong resident of Tickfaw, Mr. Pete went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 18, 2009 at his residence. He was a charter member of First Baptist Church of Tickfaw and has served as a deacon since the church was established over 50 years ago. After serving in WWII with the United States Army, Mr. Pete worked as an automobile mechanic. Later he became employed with Hood Motors where he retired after 29 years of service.

He was married for 52 years to the late Ruby Anthony and they were blessed with two sons and one daughter.

Mr. Pete is survived by his wife of 14 years, Mildred Anthony; one son, Clarence "Bill" Anthony and wife Jackie; daughter-in-law, Louise Anthony; four grandsons, Dale, Justin, Scott and Dwight Anthony; granddaughter, Michelle King along with five great-grandchildren. Also surviving him are four stepdaughters, Monica Powell, Viola Powell and husband Randy, Debbie Stilley and husband Roy and Carrie Owens and husband Rip and a host of step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were one son, Caffrey D. "Tottie" Anthony and one daughter, Ellen Anthony; three brothers, S.K., Murk and Eazers Anthony and three sisters, Viola Anthony, Ida Persing and Vivian Strahan.

The family expresses their gratitude for Heather Wagner and Monica Powell for their attentiveness to Mr. Pete during his illness.

Visitation will be held from the chapel of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home, west of Hammond on Wednesday, May 20th from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the First Baptist Church of Tickfaw on Thursday beginning at 8:00 a.m. Funeral services will be held at the church at 10:00 a.m. and officiated by Rev. Fred Brumfield. interment will follow in Shelah Cemetery in Tickfaw.

Arrangements were entrusted to Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home of Hammond.

Mary Ann Silessi

Mary Ann Silessi, 82 years old of Hammond, LA, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at her residence.

She was born on Sunday, August 15, 1926, in Hammond.

Surviving are ; husband of 63 years, Pete Silessi; daughter, Anne Baham; daughter & son-in-law, Denise Barrett and James Barrett; son & daughter-in-law, Frank and Donna Silessi; 2 sisters, Anna Belle Silessi, Beatrice Nicolosi; 8 grandchildren, Robert Baham Jr., Kathy Lynn Landry, Regina Forrest, Peter Silessi, Jason Silessi, Jennifer Labee, Billy Ebarb and Amanda Ebarb; also survived by 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by ; parents, Philip Monistere and Belle Danna Monistere; son-in-law, Bobby Baham; brothers, Albert, Chris and Salvador Monistere; sisters, Katy Bignar, Lucy Todora, Lena Alfonso and Rosemary Compton.

Friends will be received Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond from 6:00 P.M. until 10:00 P.M. and on Thursday at Holy Ghost from 8:30 A.M. until services. Services will be held at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. interment will follow in the Rose Memorial Park Cemetery, Hammond, Louisiana 70401.

Roy W. Smith "Smitty"

Age 86, born in Gerald, Texas and reared in Belton, Texas , Roy was a resident of McIntosh, Florida, when he Passed away Monday, May 18, 2009 at the Munroe Regional Medical Center in Florida. Roy was a United States Army veteran of WW II.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Smith, two daughters, Kim and Vicky; three granddaughters, Courtney, Kayla and Cheyenne; one grandson, Logan and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Clarence and Victoria Lela-Morgan Smith; three sisters, Oma, Erma and Winnie and two brothers, Shelly and Orval Kenneth.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services from the chapel of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home, west of Hammond, La on Monday, May 25th at 11:00 a.m. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the funeral home chapel Sunday, May 24th from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and again on Monday beginning at 9:00 a.m. until the service time. interment will follow in Holly Gardens Cemetery in Hammond, La.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home of Hammond.

Robert Young "Bobby" Thompson, Jr.

Robert Young Thompson, Jr., born August 16, 1930, in Amite, LA, son of Young Thompson and Louise Hendry Thompson Anzalone, died at home in Amite on Friday, May 15, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. After graduating from Amite High School and completing four years of military service in the United States Air Force, he graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University and became a valued employee as an Examiner for the Louisiana State Commissioner of Insurance. Affectionately known as "Mr. Bobby", he worked for the last decade for the Town of Amite as Custodian of Amite’s five cemeteries. Preceding him in death were his parents.

His survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ruby Frey Carley Thompson, Amite; sons, Gerald G. Carley and wife, Brenda, Daphne, AL, John Robert Thompson and wife, Karen Vines Thompson, Ponchatoula, Samuel James Thompson and wife, Nancy Miller Thompson, Tickfaw and Robert Young Thompson, III, Amite; grandchildren, David Carley and wife, Murphette, Baton Rouge, Kevin Carley and wife, Susan, Mobile, AL, James Michael Thompson, Pumpkin Center, Robert Brandon Thompson and wife, Samantha, US Army Fort Bragg, NC, John Carl Thompson, Amite, Bradley Young Thompson, Amite, Kevin Paul Thompson, Amite and Beth Taylor Jarred, Independence; great-grandchildren, Houston, Evelyn and Jack Carley, Baton Rouge, Cameron and Ross Carley, Mobile, AL, Amanda and Corey Jarred, Independence, and Breeanna Marie Thompson, Fort Bragg, NC; brother, James E. Thompson, Baton Rouge; sister, Irma Thompson Villar, Oriskany Falls, NY; aunt, Rosemary Thompson Walters, Baton Rouge; numerous cousins, two nieces and a nephew. Mr Thompson was a charter member of First Southern Methodist Church, Amite, for 45 years serving for many years as a Sunday School Teacher, member of the Board of Stewards, Trustee, Church Chairman, and Choir member.

He was formerly a member of the Volunteer Fire Department in Amite, the Masonic Lodge of Amite, the Woodmen of the World Fraternal Organization and a former member of First Baptist Church and First United Methodist Church both in Amite.

"Well done, thou good and faithful servant, beloved husband, father, grandfather and neighbor. You will be sorely missed by your many friends and loved ones. Visitation was held on Sunday, May 17, 2009 at First Southern Methodist Church, 410 E. Mulberry St., Amite, from Noon until 3 p.m. when a Memorial Service was led by Rev. Dan Plunkett and assisted by Rev. Sam Leto and Rev. Mervin Strother. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to help with medical and other expenses may be made to Mrs. Ruby Thompson, 600 N. Duncan Ave., Amite, LA 70422. Honorary pallbearers will be John Battalora, Reggie Goldsby, Malcolm Goldsby, Louis McCoy, Marvin McCoy, Vergil Howell, Maurice Wascom, Allen Doughty, and Leroy Wilkinson. McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, in charge of arrangements.

Catherine Dufreche Bernard

Catherine Dufreche Bernard, born September 25, 1918 in Ponchatoula, Louisiana died peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, May 20, 2009. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 22, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Ponchatoula, and on Saturday from 9:00A.M. until services at St. Josephs. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 23, at 10:00 a.m. St. Joseph Catholic Church. interment will follow at Wetmore Cemetery, Ponchatoula.

She was a member of the first four-year graduating class (1939) of Southeastern Louisiana University and a charter member of Yellow Jackets (Kappa Rho) Sorority.

She was married for 43 years to the late A. Lewis Bernard of New Iberia, where she lived from the 1940s until 1985 when she returned to her hometown of Ponchatoula.

She is preceded in death by her parents C.J. "Cyp" Dufreche, Sr. and Gertrude Strader Dufreche, her brother, C.J. "Buddy" Dufreche and a nephew, Edward I. Dufreche, all of Ponchatoula.

She is survived by her brother, Judge E. Brent Dufreche and wife Ruth Juhasz Dufreche of Springfield; daughters Aimee B. Rubio and husband Martin Rubio of Houston; Mary B. Dusing of Houston; Louise B. "Cissy" Dorsey and husband Tommy Dorsey, Sr. of Ponchatoula; Jeanne B. Cheynel of Paris, France; sons Lewis B. Bernard and wife Charlene Sellers Bernard of Lafayette; Thomas L. Bernard of New Orleans; John E. Bernard and wife Holly Green Bernard of Albany, Texas ; and Joseph B. Bernard and wife Sheila Nobles Bernard of Ponchatoula. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 20, great grandchildren, one niece and eight nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Stella M. Kinney/Student Foundation/Yellow Jacket Club Scholarship. Make checks payable to the Southeastern Development Foundation SLU 10293, Hammond, LA 70402.

Iris Wood Conerly

Mrs. Iris Wood Conerly a homemaker and retired employee of the Tangipahoa Parish Clerk of Court Office after 35 years and 11 months of service was born August 24, 1915 and Passed away at 6:35 p.m., Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond. Mrs. Iris was 93, a native & resident of Amite her entire life. She was a member of the First Southern Methodist Church in Amite.

Mrs. Iris is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Marc & Nancy Frey Conerly, Amite; 2 sisters-in-law, Myrthe Conerly Walker, Lafayette, LA and Catherine Dees Conerly, Greensburg, several nieces & nephews, & great nieces & nephews.

Preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, E.J. " Sam" Conerly; parents, Jacob Ezra "Bud" and Lula Mae Carter Wood; 3 brothers, Carl, Ed, and Purcell Wood.

Visitation at McKneely & Vaughn Funeral Home, Amite, on Friday, May 22, 2009 after 9:00 a.m. until Religious Services in the Funeral Home Chapel at 1:00 p.m. with Deacon Mike Agnello from Saint Helena Catholic Church officiating. interment in the Amite City Cemetery.

McKneely & Vaughn Funeral Home, Amite, is located at I-55N & Hwy 16W behind Grand Prix Car Wash & Bond Eye Clinic.

James Edward Jackson

Elder James Edward Jackson was born to Elder Louis Jackson and Meloneise Hayward Jackson Calahan on December 17, 1938 in Gloster, Mississippi. He was educated in the Amite County Public School System. He later entered the military and was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana for much of his military training. After his military career, he began working for the United States Postal Service and continued to work for more than thirty-five years.

He became Pastor in 1999 and during this time be became Chairman/Coordinator for District number 12-Eastern Louisiana Jurisdiction #1.

He leaves his legacy to his devoted wife of forty-five (45) years Phebe Joan Donald Jackson ; six sons, James, Jr. (Andrea) San Jose, CA; Darryl (Juanita) and Basil (Lisa) Austin, TX; Theotis (Vanessa) Lafayette, LA; Reggie (Ashley) Hammond, LA; Marcus, North Brunswich, NJ; and one daughter, Antinette L. Jackson of San Fransisco, CA; two brothers, George M. Jackson (Rose) Kenosha, WI; Henry 1. Jackson (Betty) Colorado Springs, CO; three sisters, Donnis Roberts and Martha Ann Wright (Willie) of Benton Harbor, Michigan; Jammie Ruth McKnight of Milwauee, WI; two stepbrothers John and Moses Callahan; and two stepsisters, Stella Bivins and Rachel Roberts; eleven grandchildren, Jean Winston, Jeremy, Jordan, D’AurieJ, Darius, Terrence, Christopher, AaHyah, Reggie, Theotis Jr., Jackson and Chastty Mouton; survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; the church family and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

The services for Elder James Edward Jackson are as followed:

Wake: Friday, May 22, 2009; 7:00 p.m. at First COGIC (Hammond, LA)

Funeral: Saturday, May 23, 2009; 11:00 A.M. at Vernon Baptist Church (Hammond)

interment: Holly Garden Cemetery

Allan Joseph Petho

Allan Joseph Petho died Sat. 16, 2009 at the age of 54. He is survived by brother Andrew Petho, Russell Petho, Rudolph Petho Jr., Eric Petho, and sister Denise Petho Poole, Mother Eleanor Petho.

He is preceded in death by his father Rudolph Petho Sr. Memorial service will be held at Lake City, Florida on Saturday 23, 2009.
