Athelene Halton

Age 77 and a lifelong resident of Pumpkin Center, Athelene Passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at her nephew’s home in Pumpkin Center. A very active member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, Athelene always participated in Vacation Bible School and absolutely loved being a part of "Happy Hearts".

On September 19, 1952, Athelene was married to her late husband, Roscoe Halton. Their only son, Robert L. Halton survives her along with one granddaughter, Julie Schafer, both of Pumpkin Center. She leaves behind her siblings, Opal White , Vesper Henson, Robert "Teddy" Carpenter, Hugh Carpenter, Vernon "Bo" Carpenter, Ferndeze Carpenter and Jarvis Carpenter, along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Also preceding her in death are one sister, Guessner Starkey and four brothers, Charles Carpenter, Willard Carpenter, Layvonne Carpenter and Isthmal Carpenter.

She will be sadly missed by her loved ones and her church family.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services from Jerusalem Baptist Church on Friday, May 15th at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. Rev. Randal Pike will officiate the services and interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home of Hammond.

Richard S. "Bunkie" Sanders

Age 85, Bunkie was born in Amite, Louisiana on June 3, 1923 and Passed away May 14, 2009 at his home in Hammond. He served our country as a United States Army Veteran of WWII. Retiring as a business owner of a vending company, he had previously served as board chairman of Community State Bank. Bunkie was also a rancher and one of the first breeders of Arabian horses in Louisiana .

His wife of 61 wonderful years, Virgie Laurent Sanders, survives him along with two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia Perry of Southhaven, Mississippi, Cynthia and Tom Evans, residents of Hammond, Louisiana and McComb, Mississippi; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Debra Sanders of North Sioux City, South Dakota and Bryan and Lisa Sanders of Hammond.

Bunkie adored his five grandchildren, Blair Burmaster, Matthew Perry, Peyton Sanders, Aleigh Sanders and Brynn Sanders. One sister, Catherine Shafer of Hammond also survives him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Blue Belle Sanders and three sisters, Patricia Flynn; Mamie Hayden and Addie Varnado.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services from the chapel of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home west of Hammond on Saturday, May 16th at 11:30 a.m. with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. Rev. Leon Dunn will officiate the funeral services and interment will follow in Old Amite Cemetery in Amite, Louisiana .

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Richard Murphy Hospice Foundation, 16013 Halbert Lane, Hammond, LA 70403.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home of Hammond.

Richard Lee Ball

Richard Lee Ball, 51 years old of Tickfaw, Louisiana , died Thursday, May 14, 2009, at his residence. He was born on Wednesday, January 22, 1958, in Natchez, Mississippi, son of Richard Spencer Ball and the late Connie Maxie. He was a Truck Driver for Mele Printing.

Surviving are his wife, Theresa M. Ball, and step daughter, Tabatha Carbo; step son, Michael Salande; sister, Susan Salinas; 3 brothers, Johnny Ball, Carl "Bubba" Ball, and Michael Ball; step mother, Linda Ball; 4 step grandchildren, Heather Thompson, William Salande, Gary Thomas Jr., and Lane Thomas Carbo.

Friends will be received Sunday, May 17, 2009, at the Woodhaven Church of God from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Larry Moak officiating. interment will follow in the Woodhaven Church of God Cemetery.

Jerry Palmer Bond

Jerry Palmer Bond, a caregiver and resident of Albany, she died at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 15, 2009, at Golden Age Nursing Home after a battle with cancer. She was 64 and a native of Independence.

Arrangements for a memorial service are pending.

Survived by a daughter, Rachel Bond, and a sister, Alice Palmer Wascom.

Preceded in death by her husband, Alonzo Frank Bond; father, John Calvin Palmer; and mother, Maggie Bankston Palmer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to help with final expenses c/o Rachel Bond, P.O. Box 942, Zachary, LA 70791.

Ouida Fay Sticker Ciresi

Ouida Fay Sticker Ciresi, 67 years old of Bedico, Louisiana , died Friday, May 15, 2009, in St. Tammany Parish Hospital.

She was born on Saturday, August 9, 1941, in Bedico, Louisiana , daughter of the late Henry A. Sticker and the late Eva Corkern.

Surviving are her husband, Ronald Ciresi. 2 daughters & sons-in-law, Veronica Lynn Ciresi & Roy Smith and Eva Marie Ciresi & Fred Zansler. 1 son & daughter-in-law Garrett Wade & Stephnie Ciresi. Her twin brother, Glenn Ray Sticker; sister and brother-in-law, Thelma Jane "Puddin" Sticker & Merlie Jenkins and brother Irwin A. Sticker. 7 grandchildren, Zachary Ryan, Jordan Bess & Dalton Henry Smith; Ryan Wade, Madison Lynn & Kamryn Victoria Ciresi; Shelby Fay Zansler. And 1 great-grandchild, Ayden Nicholas Dalton Smith.

She is preceded in death by 1 brother Gerald Henry Sticker.

Friends will be received Saturday, May 16, 2009, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula and on Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Midway Baptist Church from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Services will be held at Midway Baptist Church, Sunday, May 17, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jimmy Wall officiating. interment will follow in the Sticker Cemetery.

Lena Zumo Moore

Lena Zumo Moore, born February 24, 1924, Passed away at age 85 on Friday, May 15, 2009. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother known for her kind and gentle manner. Lena is survived by her husband of 66 years, Henry Carmon Moore, Sr. She is also survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Cannon & SuEllan Moore of Hammond, Louisiana , and Will & Gwen Moore of Baton Rouge. Grandchildren were the "heart" of her life, and she will be dearly missed by them, including Amy Weiss and husband, Corey; Todd Moore and wife, Kristy; Matt Moore and spouse, Lindsey; Brad Moore, Mandy Moore, Cooper Moore, Caleb Moore, and four great-grandchildren. Lena is also survived by a sister, Anne Holeman, and three brothers, Victor Zumo, John Zumo, and John Gerage. Lena was a native of Baton Rouge, born to Anthony and Rose Zumo, who preceded her hi death. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Josie Jones, Phyllis Anderson, Polly King, and Frances Bello. Her grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be held at Rabenhorst East Funeral Home, 11000 Florida Boulevard from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday evening, May 17, 2009 and at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church on Monday, May 18, 2009 from 9:30 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. interment at St. George Catholic Church Cemetery will immediately follow mass. The family offers deep gratitude to the loving staff of Flannery Oaks and Life Source Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the hospice agency of choice.

Catherine "Cathy" Bennett Murry

Catherine "Cathy" Bennett Murry, 73 years old of Ponchatoula, Louisiana , died Friday, May 15, 2009, at her residence.

She was born on Thursday, July 25, 1935, in New Iberia, Louisiana , daughter of the late Joe Bennett and Elverta Lancon Bennett. She was a Homemaker.

Surviving are her husband, Robert Claude Murry; daughter, Lisa Murry Gabriel of Ponchatoula, LA; 3 sons, Tim Murry of Ponchatoula, Robert Murry II of Denham Springs, LA, and Marcus Murry of Livingston, LA; 2 sisters, Trudy LeBoeuf of Prairieville, LA, and Elizabeth Davis of New Iberia; 3 brothers, Joe Bennett, Jr. and Ronald Bennett, both of New Iberia, and Luke Bennett of St. Martinville, LA; 10 grandchildren, Robert Murry, III, Matthew Murry, Michael Murry, Leslie Murry, Brad Murry, Brooke Davis, Benjamin Gabriel, Jessica Gabriel, Alan Murry, Carrie Locke.

She is preceded in death by a brother, Henry Bennett of Houma, LA.

Friends will be received Monday, May 18, 2009, at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m. with Rev. Johnny Hernandez officiating. interment will follow in the Ponchatoula Cemetery.

Capt. Powell P. Vial Jr.

Capt. Powell P. Vail, Jr., U.S. Navy (Retired) Passed away at the age of 90 in the Community Hospice of Jackson ville, Florida, on Sunday, May 10, 2009. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Frances, and is survived by his sister, Joan Vail Thorne; his niece and nephews, Tracy, Vail, and John Thorne; his stepsons, Jim and Randolph Mahoney and their children, Sarah Johnson and Meredith and Alex Mahoney, respectively.

Capt. Vail was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1941. His first duty station was on the battleship, USS West Virginia, which came under attack and sank in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He went on to an illustrious career in the Navy during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. In WWII he served aboard numerous destroyers off North Africa and Sicily as well as in the Pacific theatre. He was later assigned several commands at sea and ashore that culminated in his being named Commander, Destroyer Squadron Six, the Navy's first all guided-missile ship squadron.

Capt. Vail was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, along with the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal among many others.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated in his honor at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, on Thursday, May 14th, at 11:00 a.m. interment will follow in Hammond, Louisiana , where his parents are buried, on Monday, May 18th.

No flowers please. All offerings in Capt. Vail's memory should be sent to the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.

Gradie E. Carroll

Gradie E. Carroll, age 84, died on May 13, 2009 at his residence in Pumpkin Center. He was a native of Ponchatoula and a US Army veteran of World War II having received the Purple Heart Medal and two Bronze Service Stars. He was a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his friend and companion, Bessie R. Terrell; son, Noel Dwight Carroll; 3 grandsons, Stephen Ray Carroll, David Wayne Carroll, and Dwight Elliot Carroll; 4 great-grandchildren and sister, Mattie Lou Meades. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lucille Carroll; Son, Faron Leon Carroll, brothers, Ernest, Odell, Willie, Edward, Leon, Lloyd, Carney and Morris Carroll and sister, Sadie Elvie Keen.

Family and friends are invited to the visitation at Geisler Funeral Home of Albany on Friday, May 15 from 6 until 9 pm. Religious services will be on Saturday, May 16 at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Pumpkin Center at 10 a.m. interment will follow in the church cemetery. Online

Billy H. Wyche

Dr. Billy H. Wyche, 71, of Rossville, Passed away Saturday, May 9, 2009 at his home.

Dr. Billy Wyche, Professor Emeritus of History, served on the faculty of Southeastern’s Department of History and Political Science for thirty-three years. The Georgia native earned the B.S. in Social Studies at the University of Chattanooga and the M.A. and Ph.D. in History at the University of Georgia. He taught at Frostburg State College in Maryland in 1967-68, before coming to Southeastern in 1969. He also did postgraduate study at Cambridge University and the University of Virginia. He is an authority on labor history, particularly of the lumber industry in Bogalusa and elsewhere in the Florida Parishes, and has numerous publications on the subject, plus a noteworthy article on the Civil War era, "The Union Defends the Confederacy: The Fighting Printers of New Orleans," recently reprinted in an anthology of articles on Louisianians in the Civil War. Dr. Wyche is a longstanding member of the United Federation of College Teachers and a former member of the Board of Directors for the Louisiana Historical Association. During the last decade of his career he played a major role in the revitalization of Southeastern’s graduate program in History. Dr. Wyche was also a member of Simpson United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his sisters, Betty Bowman of Rossville, & Mary Jo Beasley, Ringgold; brother, Jackson Wyche, Rossville; niece, Jeanie Bowman of Huntsville, AL; nephew, Gregory Wyche.

Dr. Wyatt was entombed in Rossville, Georgia on Wednesday, May 15, 2009 in Rossville, Georgia.

Arrangements were by the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home & Crematory, Rossville, Georgia.

Lacey O'Day Ficklin

Lacey O'Day Ficklin, 23 years old of Greensburg, died Thursday, May 14, 2009, in Tickfaw as a result of a traffic accident.

She was born on Wednesday, July 10, 1985, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana .

Lacey was a graduate of Albany High School where she was involved in many sports. She won numerous awards in track competitions both locally and regionally. She was a member of the Northshore Transplant Group, having had two heart transplants. Lacey was loved and admired by her family and friends. She was loving and courageous and lived life to its fullest.

Surviving are her mother and step-father, Luora M. and Samuel Arthur; father, Michael George Ficklin and his fianc/ Sarah Kent; brother & sister-in-law, Benji Michael and Amanda Ficklin; sister, Lesley F. Eschete; step-brother, Matt Arthur; step-sister, Rebecca Valure; 3 nieces, Caroline Elise Eschete, Mackenzie Valure, Courtney Fife; 3 nephews, Mason Valure, Maguire Valure, Brandon Toups; and her maternal grandmother, Eloise Smith McNabb.

She is preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Deforest Louis Ficklin; paternal grandmother, Myrtle Cutrer Fiorella; maternal grandfather, Benny McNabb; and her brother-in-law; Justin Eschete.

Friends will be received Friday, May 15, 2009, from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond and on Saturday, May 16, 2009 from 9:00 am until 11:00 am at the Greensburg United Methodist Church.

Services will be held at Greensburg United Methodist Church, on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 11:00 am with Rev. LaMarylis Cotten officiating.

interment will follow in the Greensburg Cemetery.
