Athelene Halton

Age 77 and a lifelong resident of Pumpkin Center, Athelene Passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at her nephew’s home in Pumpkin Center. A very active member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, Athelene always participated in Vacation Bible School and absolutely loved being a part of "Happy Hearts".

On September 19, 1952, Athelene was married to her late husband, Roscoe Halton. Their only son, Robert L. Halton survives her along with one granddaughter, Julie Schafer, both of Pumpkin Center. She leaves behind her siblings, Opal White , Vesper Henson, Robert "Teddy" Carpenter, Hugh Carpenter, Vernon "Bo" Carpenter, Ferndeze Carpenter and Jarvis Carpenter, along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Also preceding her in death are one sister, Guessner Starkey and four brothers, Charles Carpenter, Willard Carpenter, Layvonne Carpenter and Isthmal Carpenter.

She will be sadly missed by her loved ones and her church family.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services from Jerusalem Baptist Church on Friday, May 15th at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. Rev. Randal Pike will officiate the services and interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home of Hammond.

Richard S. "Bunkie" Sanders

Age 85, Bunkie was born in Amite, Louisiana on June 3, 1923 and Passed away May 14, 2009 at his home in Hammond. He served our country as a United States Army Veteran of WWII. Retiring as a business owner of a vending company, he had previously served as board chairman of Community State Bank. Bunkie was also a rancher and one of the first breeders of Arabian horses in Louisiana .

His wife of 61 wonderful years, Virgie Laurent Sanders, survives him along with two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia Perry of Southhaven, Mississippi, Cynthia and Tom Evans, residents of Hammond, Louisiana and McComb, Mississippi; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Debra Sanders of North Sioux City, South Dakota and Bryan and Lisa Sanders of Hammond.

Bunkie adored his five grandchildren, Blair Burmaster, Matthew Perry, Peyton Sanders, Aleigh Sanders and Brynn Sanders. One sister, Catherine Shafer of Hammond also survives him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Blue Belle Sanders and three sisters, Patricia Flynn; Mamie Hayden and Addie Varnado.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services from the chapel of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home west of Hammond on Saturday, May 16th at 11:30 a.m. with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. Rev. Leon Dunn will officiate the funeral services and interment will follow in Old Amite Cemetery in Amite, Louisiana .

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Richard Murphy Hospice Foundation, 16013 Halbert Lane, Hammond, LA 70403.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home of Hammond.

Ouida Sticker Ciresi

Mrs. Ouida Sticker Ciresi, 66 years old of Bedico, died Friday, May 15, 2009 .

Friends will be received Saturday, May 16, 2009, from 6:00 pm until 9:00 at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula and on Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Midway Baptist Church from 9:00 am until 11:00 am.

Services will be held at Midway Baptist Church, Sunday, May 17, 2009 at 11:00 am with Rev. Jimmy Wall officiating. interment will follow in the Sticker Cemetery.

Lena Zumo Moore

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7

Lena Zumo Moore, born February 24, 1924, Passed away at age 85 on Friday, May 15, 2009. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother known for her kind and gentle manner.

Lena is survived by her husband of 66 years, Henry Carmon Moore, Sr.

She is also survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Cannon & SuEllan Moore of Hammond, Louisiana , and Will & Gwen Moore of Baton Rouge. Grandchildren were the "heart" of her life, and she will be dearly missed by them, including Amy Weiss and husband, Corey; Todd Moore and wife, Kristy; Matt Moore and spouse, Lindsey; Brad Moore, Mandy Moore, Cooper Moore, Caleb Moore, and four great-grandchildren.

Lena is also survived by a sister, Anne Holeman, and three brothers, Victor Zumo, John Zumo, and John Gerage. Lena was a native of Baton Rouge, born to Anthony and Rose Zumo, who preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by sisters, Josie Jones, Phyllis Anderson, Polly King, and Frances Bello. Her grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held at Rabenhorst East Funeral Home, 11000 Florida Boulevard from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday evening, May 17, 2009 and at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church on Monday, May 18, 2009 from 9:30 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m.

interment at St. George Catholic Church Cemetery will immediately follow mass.

The family offers deep gratitude to the loving staff of Flannery Oaks and Life Source Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the hospice agency of choice.

John J. "Red" Kraft Jr

John J. "Red" Kraft Jr. passed into the arms of his Lord on Thursday, April 30, 2009, at North Oaks Medical Center. Born February 27, 1932, in Wadesboro, La., he was a lifelong resident of Ponchatoula.

He was a 1950 graduate of Ponchatoula High School and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was an avid sportsman and conservationist, a member of Triangle T Sportsman League, Hunters Against Poachers, W&R Hunting Club and the American Legion. He also was a city league coach for baseball and football for many years and a follower of this league until his death. A member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ponchatoula, he was retired from Shell Oil at Norco.

Preceded in death by his parents John J. Kraft Sr. and Eva Arceneaux Ryan and a brother Charles E. "Dago" Kraft, he is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty Bonicard Kraft; two sons, John J. Kraft III and wife Shane Watson Kraft and Jeffrey E. Kraft and wife Robin Schum Kraft, all of Ponchatoula; a daughter Glynis Kraft Haik and husband John Haik of Mobile, Alabama; eight loving grandchildren Brittani Kraft Emmons, Mallory Kraft, John J. "Jake" Kraft IV, Jebadiah "Jeb" Kraft, all of Ponchatoula, and Ryan, Reagan, Keegan and Logan Haik of Mobile, Alabama; two half brothers, James W. "Slippery" Ryan Jr. and Alvin C. "Punkin" Ryan, both of Ponchatoula, and a half sister, Veronica "Ronnie" Ryan Souza of Tracy, California.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to the visitation from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula on Monday, May 4, and from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ponchatoula on Tuesday, May 5, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. interment will follow at Ponchatoula Cemetery.

Sister Mary Anne McSweeney

Sister Mary Anne McSweeney, O.P., age 96 years and in her 78th year of religious profession, died on Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 5:15 a.m. at the Dominican Sisters’ Mohun Healthcare Center in Columbus, Ohio. Sister Mary Anne was a member of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, a new congregation consisting of seven Dominican congregations including the Congregation of St. Mary New Orleans.

Sister was born Alice Mary McSweeney in New Orleans, Louisiana , daughter of thelate Terrance McSweeney and Anna Burke McSweeney, sister of the late John Patrick McSweeney, Mary Agnes McSweeney Amerland, and Edward McSweeney, survived by nieces Myra Ann Amerland Garner and Elaine Amerland French of Plano, Texas , nephews John McSweeney of Gray, Louisiana , Edward McSweeney of Newhall, California, Albert McSweeney of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and William McSweeney of New Orleans, Louisiana .

Also survived by numerous grand nieces and nephews and great-grand nieces and nephews. Sister Mary Anne received a Bachelor’s degree in Education from St. Mary’s Dominican College in New Orleans. Since taking her vows as a Dominican Sister, Sister Mary Anne taught at St. John the Baptist, St. Anthony of Padua and St. Matthias in New Orleans, at Holy Ghost in Hammond, St. Joseph in Paulina, St. Peter in Reserve, St. Agnes in Baton Rouge, and St. Bernadette in Houma.

She also taught in Catechetical summer schools in Amite, Grosse-Tete, Independence, Pointe-A-La-Hache, Prairieville, and Rosaryville, all in Louisiana , and in summer classes at St. Mary’s Dominican High School and College. In addition, Sister served as principal at Our Lady of Lourdes in New Orleans and at Holy Ghost in Hammond.

Sister Mary Anne served for one year as Coordinator of the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse, five years as Assistant Coordinator, and seven years as Health Care Coordinator.

At the time of her death, Sister Mary Anne was living a life of prayer at the Dominican Sisters’ Mohun Healthcare Center in Columbus, Ohio. A wake service and Mass were held at the Motherhouse in Columbus, Ohio on Friday, May 1, 2009. A wake service will be held at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse, 580 Broadway, New Orleans, LA 70118 on Monday, May 4, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. with a prayer service at 10:00 a.m. Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. interment will be in the Dominican Sisters Cemetery in Rosaryville, Ponchatoula, Louisiana . In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Dominican Sisters of Peace, 2320 Airport Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43219 or 7300 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70118 or to the Sister Mary Anne McSweeney, O.P. Faculty Endowment Fund at St. Mary’s Dominican High School, 7701 Walmsley Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70125.

Mrs. Elsie Naomi Pitt

Mrs. Elsie Naomi Pitt a loving mother, grandmother & sister was born May 6, 1931 and Passed away at 11:30AM, Friday, May 1, 2009 at the Kentwood Manor Nursing Home, Kentwood. She was 77, a native and resident of Kentwood. She is the daughter of the late Sidney J. & Kate Grace Hodges.

Mrs. Elsie is survived by a daughter, Linda Faye Booty, and husband R.J., Kentwood; 3 sons, John R. Franks, and wife Cheryl, Houston, TX, Ronald "Bruiser" Franks, and wife Linda, Roseland, & Robert Fauver, and wife Mona Lisa, Bogue Chitto, MS; a brother, Jonathan "Bonnie" Hodges and friend, Brenda, Chesbrough; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren & numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Tommy Franks, 3 brothers, & 2 sisters.

Visitation will be at the McKneely & Vaughn Funeral Home, Amite, on Monday, May 4, 2009 from 10:00AM until Religious Services at the funeral home Chapel at 1:00PM with interment at the Hodges Cemetery, Chesbrough.

McKneely & Vaughn Funeral Home, Amite, is located at I-55N & Hwy 16W behind Bond Eye Clinic & Grand Prix Car Wash.

Wilda Phillips Westmoreland

Wilda Phillips Westmoreland, 82 years old, died Friday, May 1, 2009 at North Oaks Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of Tangipahoa Parish and resided in Fluker.

She was a graduate of Kentwood High School and retired Bookkeeper at Kent Truck and Trailers in Fluker. She was a member of Tangipahoa Baptist Church and a former Sunday School Teacher.

She is survived by two sons, Dr. Leo R. Westmoreland, Jr. and wife, Patricia of Hammond and Dr. Daryl M. Westmoreland of Fluker and three grandchildren, Jessica M. Westmoreland, Daryl M. Westmoreland, Jr., and Dannon M. Westmoreland, all of Fluker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo R. Westmoreland, Sr., parents, Grace Bridges Phillips and Pierce Madison Phillips, one sister, Christina Day Sims, two brothers, Buddy and Joe B. Phillips and a special nephew, Wallace Day.

Visitation will be at McKneely Funeral Home in Kentwood from 8 a.m. until funeral services at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 4, 2009. interment will be in Tangipahoa Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Daryl M. Westmoreland, Jr. , Robert W. Caston, III, Donald Kent, Duke Kent, Wayne Mitchell, and Tim Day. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Richard Murphy Hospice Foundation, 16013 Halbert Road, Hammond, LA 70403.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the physicians and staff of North Oaks Medical Center for the wonderful and compassionate care provided to her.

Cecil Reinken Bedsole

Mrs. Cecil Reinken Bedsole, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother died at Hood Memorial Hospital May 3, 2009 surrounded by her family. She was 88 years old, a native of Baton Rouge, and resident of Hammond. She graduated from Baton Rouge High School in 1937, and Louisiana State University (1941) where she worked as a secretary to the LSU Dean of Men. After marrying and moving to Hammond she was secretary to Luther H. Dyson, President of Southeastern Louisiana College (now SLU). She was a retired realtor and former member of Les Mesdames and other campus, civic and church organizations. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hammond, and the United Methodist Women.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Robert G. and Brenda Bedsole Ricks of Amite; two sons, G. Alan Bedsole of Hammond, and Robert L. Bedsole of Baton Rouge and his special friend Marcia Colvin; five grandchildren, Mike Ricks, Rachel, Laura, and Joseph Bedsole of Baton Rouge; Robert W. Ricks of Amite; four nieces, Barbara Griffin Wiltshire and husband Rick of Richmond, Virginia; Jane Griffin DeMatteis and husband Denny of Raleigh, North Carolina; Jan Woods Gray and husband Bob of Dothan, Alabama; Betty Sue Woods Rash and husband Bobby of Slocomb, Alabama; nephew David Griffin and wife Mary of Raleigh, North Carolina, and numerous other family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, George W. Bedsole, retired Department Head Emeritus of the Department of Sociology, Social Welfare and Criminal Justice and Professor Emeritus of Sociology at SLU; her parents Granville B. and Bertie Dixon Reinken; her sister Nell Reinken Griffin and husband Percy; brother-in-law Vergil L. Bedsole; sister-in-law Blanche Bedsole Woods and husband Hubert; and three nephews, Hubert "Trump" Woods , Edward Woods , and Jimmy Woods .

Friends will be received Wednesday, May 6, 2009, from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond. Services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at 2:00 pm. interment will follow in the Greenlawn Mausoleum.

The family extends a special thanks to all of her wonderful friends, neighbors, and caregivers.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the George and Cecil Bedsole Criminal Justice Scholarship through the Southeastern Louisiana Development Foundation, SLU Box 1073, Hammond, LA 70402.

Homer Alfred Brewer Jr.

Age 66 and a lifelong resident of Pumpkin Center, Homer Passed away Sunday, May 3, 2009 at his residence.

He is survived by his daughter, Dana Brewer Plazinic of Covington; sister, Charlene Burnthorn; brothers, Wayne, Richard and Jerry Brewer and one grandson, Nikola Plazinic.

Preceding Homer in death were his parents, Roxie-Hill and Homer Brewer, Sr and one sister, Linda Hinson.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend the memorial service from Jerusalem Baptist Church in Pumpkin Center on Thursday, May 7th at 5:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 4:00 p.m. interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home of Hammond.
