Wilda Phillips Westmoreland

Wilda Phillips Westmoreland, 82 years old, died Friday, May 1, 2009 at North Oaks Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of Tangipahoa Parish and resided in Fluker.

She was a graduate of Kentwood High School and retired Bookkeeper at Kent Truck and Trailers in Fluker. She was a member of Tangipahoa Baptist Church and a former Sunday School Teacher.

She is survived by two sons, Dr. Leo R. Westmoreland, Jr. and wife, Patricia of Hammond and Dr. Daryl M. Westmoreland of Fluker and three grandchildren, Jessica M. Westmoreland, Daryl M. Westmoreland, Jr., and Dannon M. Westmoreland, all of Fluker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo R. Westmoreland, Sr., parents, Grace Bridges Phillips and Pierce Madison Phillips, one sister, Christina Day Sims, two brothers, Buddy and Joe B. Phillips and a special nephew, Wallace Day.

Visitation will be at McKneely Funeral Home in Kentwood from 8 a.m. until funeral services at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 4, 2009. interment will be in Tangipahoa Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Daryl M. Westmoreland, Jr. , Robert W. Caston, III, Donald Kent, Duke Kent, Wayne Mitchell, and Tim Day. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Richard Murphy Hospice Foundation, 16013 Halbert Road, Hammond, LA 70403.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the physicians and staff of North Oaks Medical Center for the wonderful and compassionate care provided to her.

Homer Alfred Brewer Jr.

Age 66 and a lifelong resident of Pumpkin Center, Homer Passed away Sunday, May 3, 2009 at his residence.

He is survived by his daughter, Dana Brewer Plazinic of Covington; sister, Charlene Burnthorn; brothers, Wayne, Richard and Jerry Brewer and one grandson, Nikola Plazinic.

Preceding Homer in death were his parents, Roxie-Hill and Homer Brewer, Sr and one sister, Linda Hinson.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend the memorial service from Jerusalem Baptist Church in Pumpkin Center on Thursday, May 7th at 5:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 4:00 p.m. interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home of Hammond.

Edward L. Deas

Born February 1, 1938 in Purvis, Mississippi to Nader and Julia Holcomb Deas, died Sunday at his home in Hammond.

He was a longtime resident of Washington Parish where he coached and was a principal for many years.

He was the beloved husband of Mary Kenney Deas and the father of five children from his first marriage to Jean Anderson Deas, Donna Thomas, Janet Thomas, Jody Deas all of Pine, Mike Deas of Walker, LA and Julie Leyrer of Madisonville. He was also survived by two stepchildren Stephen Link of Albany and Mary Beth Crovetto of Ponchatoula, two brothers William "Bill" Deas of Tupelo, MS and Robert O. Deas of Denver, CO. He was also survived by 11 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and 5 step grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 pm. until 10 p.m.Tuesday, May 5, 2009 and after 9 a.m. Wednesday, at First Baptist Church in Franklinton, LA. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with Rev. Harold Gaddy and Rev. Donal Chance officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Memorial Cemetery in Hammond, LA.

Margaret Inez Parker Peterman

Margaret Inez Parker Peterman, 72 years old died Sunday, May 3, 2009 at the Richard Murphy Hospice House in Hammond, Louisiana .

She was born on Monday, November 23, 1936, in Mobile, Alabama, daughter of the late William Parker and the late Louise Parker.

She is survived by 4 brothers; Sam Parker of Mobile , Al, Benny Parker of Robert, LA, Jackie Parker of Huntsville, AL & Frankie Parker of Mobile, AL; 2 sisters, Jenny Parker of Camden, AL & Susie Parker of Millers Ferry, AL; 3 brothers & sisters-in-law, John and Rose Parker of Vineland, AL, Donnie and Rita Parker of Mobile, AL & Joe and Teresa Parker of Mobile, AL; 2 daughters & sons-in-law, Donna "Becky and John Felder of Maurepas, LA & Debbi and Joey Drude; 10 grandchildren, Aaron, Robert Jr., & Josh Peterman, April & Tray Drude, John III, Brandon & Heather Peterman, Brice Brown and Wyatt Felder; 3 great-grandchildren, Ethan, Seth and Gracie Peterman.

She is preceded in death by her husband, John Robert "Bob" Peterman Sr., brother Kenny Parker; sisters-in-law Beth Parker & Wanda Wadlington Parker; 3 sons; Robert D. Peterman, John R. Peterman Jr. and Daran M. Peterman.

Friends will be received Wednesday, May 6, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond. Services will be held at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Wednesday May 6, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. with Dr. Rodney Taylor officiating.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Richard Murphy Hospice.

interment will follow in the Arcola-Roseland Cemetery.

Donald Frederick Wilkins

Donald Frederick Wilkins, 62 years old of Tickfaw, Louisiana , died Saturday, May 2, 2009, in Medical Center of LA at New Orleans - University Campus.

He was born on Monday, January 13, 1947, in Kansas City, Missouri, son of the late John Wilkins and Lorene Liestman Wilkins.

He was a retired Software Engineer.

Surviving are 2 sons, Richard and Glenn Wilkins; and a daughter, Heather Wilkins Lounsbury; and his best friend, Louis Nicolosi and family.

Friends will be received at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, 2009. Services will be held at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Joy Fay Bennett

Joy Fay Bennett, 58 years old of Hammond, LA, died Monday, May 4, 2009, at her residence.

She was born on Sunday, September 3, 1950, in Natalbany.

Surviving are son, Joseph A. Woody Bennett III; daughter-in-law, Melody Bennett; 2 grandchildren, Kristina Bennett and Jesse Andrew Bennett; 2 sisters and brothers-in-law, Auline and Jesse Dunn who were her gaurdians and raised her as a daughter, and Dianne and Norman Addison; brother & sister-in-law, Roy and Gloria Young; niece, who was like a sister, Janis Stogner also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by parents, Albert Young and Vivian Felter Young; sister, Mildred Lipscomb; brother, A.D. Young.

Friends will be received Thursday, May 7, 2009, at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond from 6:00 p.m. until services. Services will be held in the funeral home chapel, Thursday, May 7, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. with Rev. Louis Husser officiating.

Danny Paul Brignac

Born March 22, 1959 and died May 1, 2009, a native of Algiers, LA and resident of Ponchatoula, LA. He is a former employee of Entergy Waterford III. Survived by beloved wife of 27 years, Sheila Ockman Brignac, 2 sons Derek Brignac and Shane Brignac and 1 precious granddaughter, Brooklyn Jaide Brignac, mother of his granddaughter Casey Fernandez, 4 brothers Donald, Bryan, Kevin, and Randy Brignac, 1 sister, Shanon Brignac, mother-in-law, Helen Ockman, numerous godchildren, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents Donald Brignac, Sr. and Gertrude Weckesser Brignac, father-in-law, Earl Ockman. Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Friday and from 8 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m Saturday. interment Amite Memorial Gardens, Amite, LA.

Chaney Dillon Ross

Chaney Dillon Ross, 87, died on May 1, 2009 at home in Sarasota, Florida, from complications following heart surgery.

Chaney was born in Coshocton, Ohio and attended Ohio State University. He served as Director of Sales for hotels in New Orleans and Hammond, Louisiana and Miami and Brooksville, Florida. He retired to Sarasota, Florida.

He is survived by his children Stephen (Deborah) Ross of Hope Mills, North Carolina, Carol (Stephen) Gammon of Sarasota, Florida and Jeffrey Ross of Columbus, Ohio, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Should you wish to make a contribution in his memory, the family suggests donations to Hospice. He will be missed.

Marguerite Alice Ward

Marguerite Alice Ward was born on April 12, 1921 in Houston, Texas , and Passed away at the age of 88 on May 5, 2009 in Albany, La.

She is survived by two sons, Robert Ward and his wife, Betty of Albany, and Dennen Ward Jr. and his wife, Fay of Gulfport, MS.; two grandsons, Robert Scott Ward of Watson, La. and Frank Ward of Baton Rouge, La.; two granddaughters, Tiffany Ward of Slidell, La . and Katie Geiger, of Charlotte, N.C.; 8 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennen E. Ward, Sr.; her son, Thomas F. Ward; a sister, Marie Johnston, and two brothers, Elwin Gaussiran and Frank Gaussiran, Jr. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Geisler Funeral Home in Ponchatoula from 9:00 a.m. until the service at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ponchatoula. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Generations Hospice (32948 LA Hwy 16, Denham Springs, LA 70726).

Eula Matthews Gordon Blount

Mrs. Eula Matthews Gordon Blount, 91 years old , formerly of Ponchatoula, died Wednesday, April 29, 2009 in Logansport, LA. Eula was born on April 7, 1918. Surviving is her husband, Dalton Blount, and sister, Clara Miller and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Daniel Dennis Gordon; a son, Daniel Dennis Gordon, Jr.; parents, Francis Matthews and Ella Mae Kuhn Matthews; brothers, Carl, Donice, Clarence, Dairl, and Archie Matthews; and sisters, Eunice Turnage, Beulah Goblowsky, Ethel Bowman, and Bethel Sheridan.

Friends will be received Saturday, May 2, 2009, from 10:00 am until the service begins at 2:00 pm at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula.

interment will follow in the Sand Hill Cemetery in Ponchatoula.

Eddie Cox

Eddie Cox, 85 of Springfield, died April 25, 2009 in Hammond.

He is survived by eight children: four daughters and 4 sons. These are Brenda Betts of Springfield; Irma Vereen of Pearland, TX; Karen Cox of Houston, TX; Paula Geathers of South Carolina; Larry Hart of Marrero; James Cox, Sr. of Hammond; Rev. Michael Cox, Sr. of Menteca, CA and Ronald Cox of Springfield. He is also survived by a sister, Earline Cox of Springfield, as well as 20 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by Leola Parker and infant sister Lula Mae Cox as well as 6 brothers: Willie Powell, Horace Davis, Wilbert Cox, Sr. Selven Cox and Sr. Roy Cox.

He was a carpenter, a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in Albany.

Visitation will be at Sweet Home Baptist Church in Albany on May 1, 2009 from 5-9 p.m. The funeral will be at Sweet Home Baptist Church on May 2, 2009 at 11 a.m. interment will be in Sweet Home Cemetery in Albany, LA.

Wilford "Red" Cowart

Wilford "Red" Cowart, age 89, Passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at North Oaks Medical Center. He was a resident of Albany and a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II.

Mr. Cowart is survived by his wife of 70 years, Laura Belle Cowart; two sons and daughters-in-law, Perry and Lorraine Cowart, and Kenneth and Susan Cowart. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Mark Cowart and wife Rebecca, Trina Guzan and husband David, Shree Jones and husband Trey, Wilford Wade Cowart and wife Mary, John Cowart and wife Missy, and Matthew Cowart; eleven great-grandchildren and an expectant great-grandchild. A sister, Inez Young, two brothers, Leroy and Floyd Cowart along with numerous nieces and nephews also survive him.

Mr. Cowart was preceded in death by a daughter, Rita Cowart; a great-granddaughter; sisters, Irena Boyd and Lorena Schanil; brothers, Joe, Ellis and Wilton Cowart.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services from the chapel of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m.. Rev. Dan Munson will conduct the services and entombment will follow in Greenlawn Mausoleum.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home of Hammond.
