CONVENT - Claude Alvin "Nukee" Petit Sr., 88, a native and resident of Hester, died Dec. 15, 2001. He was the husband of Melda Brady Petit and father of Glenda Accardo, Karen Poirrier, Gerolyn Roussel and Dr. Judy, Claude Jr., Dale and the late Murphy, Raymond and Wayne Petit.

He was the son of the late Michel and Evelyn Louque Petit and brother of Dorothy Roussel, Diana Marchese, Rose Louviere, Evelyn Pitts, Harold, Herbert Sr., Melvin and the late Dudley, Michael, Ronald and Donald Petit and Gerald Petit Miller.

He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one grandchild.

Services were Dec. 17 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Convent, with interment at the church cemetery.

PORTERA
DESTREHAN - Anthony Portera, 89, a native of Chefalu, Sicily, and resident of Destrehan, died Dec. 15, 2001. He was the husband of Mildred Babin Portera and father of Janet Hebert, Toni Offner and Cynthia and Tim Portera.

He was the son of the late Rosario and Mary Grace Pizzuto Portera and brother of Marguerite Portera and the late Concetta Mule, Rosa Butera, Josephine Windecker and Salvador, Cosimo and Rosario Portera.

He is also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were Dec. 18 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Destrehan, with interment at the church mausoleum.

QUIGLEY
LAPLACE - Loretta May Quigley, 51, a native of Kittery, Maine, and resident of LaPlace for 25 years, died Dec. 13, 2001. She was the daughter of Alvin Quigley and the late Edith Witt Quigley.

She graduated from the College of Charleston, S.C., and received master's degrees in library science from Louisiana State University and in education from Southeastern Louisiana Unversity. She worked at John L. Ory and St. Joan of Arc elementary schools and Southern University, New Orleans.

Services were Dec. 17 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, LaPlace, with interment at St. John Memorial Gardens, LaPlace.

SCHUMACHER
RESERVE - Ashton J. "A.J." Schumacher, 61, a native of New Orleans and resident of Reserve for 18 years, died Dec. 9, 2001. He was the husband of Carol Schumacher and father of Cynthia Bridges, Debra, Linda and Daniel Schumacher and Ashton and John Lott.

He was the son of John Schumacher Sr. and Margaret Forelich and brother of John Schumacher Jr.

He is also survived by eight grandchildren.

He was a retired captain of an offshore supply vessel.

Services arrangements were incomplete.

STEWART
NEW ORLEANS - Edward Stewart Sr., 71, a native of Garyville and resident of Donaldsonville for 23 years, died Dec. 13, 2001.

He was the husband of Rosemary Brunswick and father of Michelle Matthews, Patricia Allen, Deborah Jackson and Rochelle and Edward Stewart.

He was the brother of Ivory and Roy Stewart.

He was a retired police detective for the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office.

Services were Dec. 18 in the chapel of Demby & Son Funeral Home, New Orleans, with interment at Port Hudson National Cemetery.

ABADIE
SOUTH VACHERIE - Rose Gravois Abadie, 94, a native and resident of Vacherie, died Jan. 18, 2002. She was the wife of the late Ozane E. Abadie and mother of Madeleine Lasserre, Clothilde Hymel, Judith Kliebert, Rose Ann Mire, Vickie Schexnayder, Nancy Benoit, Jeanne Clemente, Antoinette, Ozane Jr., Ted and Kenneth Abadie, Dudley Labat and the late Marguerite Labat and Harold and Nolan Abadie.

She was the daughter of the late Theodore and Clothilde Gravois and sister of Louis "Teddy" and Wilford Gravois and the late Maude Waguespack and Dennis, Henry, Leo, Stan, Gaston, Ernest, Edgar and Claude Gravois.

She is also survived by 48 grandchildren, 77 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and 23 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren.

Services were Jan. 21 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, South Vacherie, with interment at the church mausoleum.

BECNEL
SOUTH VACHERIE - George "Blackie" Harold Becnel Sr., 83, a native and resident of Vacherie, died Jan. 19, 2002. He was the husband of Alice Falgoust Becnel and father of Cathleen Richard and Ralph and George Becnel Jr.

He was the son of the late Ulric and Therese Stein Becnel and brother of the late Isabella "Beo" Weber and Clifford Sr., Thomas and Raymond Becnel Sr.

He is also survived by five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was an employee of Avondale Shipyards for 33 years.

Services were Jan. 22 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, South Vacherie, with interment at the church mausoleum.

BORNE
EDGARD - Robert "Rojee" Borne Sr., 83, a native and resident of Edgard, died Jan. 17, 2002. He was the husband of Florence Edwards Borne and father of Charity Bovie, Laura Brown, Walter Edwards and Judy, Rogert Jr., Herbert, Lloyd, Ronald, Henry, Mark, Gordon and Davis Borne.

He was the son of the late Milton and Teresa Mitchell Borne and brother of Joseph Borne and the late Mary Lou Rossell, Gloria Barre, Ethel Hunter and Nell, Aubry, Milton and Martin Borne.

He is also survived by 33 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was a retired operator for Caire and Graugnard Sugar Refinery.

Services were Jan. 22 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Edgard, with interment at the church mausoleum.

BOURGEOIS
PAULINA - Henry J. Bourgeois Jr., 76, a native of Morgan City and resident of Gramercy, died Jan. 21, 2002. He was the husband of Carol W. Bourgeois and father of Stephanie Hoggatt, Carolyn Bossier, Peggy and David Bourgeois and the late Juanita Istre, Sharon and Micheal Bourgeois.

He was the son of the late Henry Sr. and Mary B. Bourgeois and brother of the late Richard and Kenneth Bourgeois.

He is also survived by four grandchildren.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.

Services are today at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Paulina, with interment at the church cemetery. Visitation starts at 8 a.m.

DiMARCO
MARRERO - Dominic "Dom" Joseph DiMarco, 74, a native of St. Charles Parish and resident of Boutte, died Jan. 20, 2002. He was the husband of Shirley Griffin DiMarco and father of Michael Thomas, Kerri Williams and Alex, Dominique and the late Keith DiMarco.

He was the son of the late Lena Tortorich and Peter DiMarco Sr. and brother of Anne Creel, Marie Howell, Peter Jr. and Joseph Di Marco and the late Lucien Ciro and Anthony DiMarco Sr.

He is also survived by a host of grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services are today at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Mothe Funeral Home, Marrero, with interment at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Cemetery. Visitation starts at 8 a.m.
