JOHN N. FERRARA

INDEPENDENCE -- John Nicholas "Nicky" Ferrara, 48 , died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at his home.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by two daughters, Bridget F. Vicknair of Livingston and Kendi Carona of Slidell; his mother, Ruby J. Ferrara of Independence; one brother, Frank W. Ferrara of Independence; two sisters, Bonnie Shelton of Independence and Tammy Smith of Hammond; and 12 grandchildren.

His father, Frank J. Ferrara, preceded him in death.

Burial was today at Colonial Cemetery, Independence.

Geisler Funeral Home, Hammond, was in charge.

VERNA DEL MARIE JOINER MAYO

BATON ROUGE -- Verna Del Marie Joiner Mayo, 78, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at Sherwood Manor Rehabilitation and Nursing Home.

A native of Hammond, she received a bachelor of arts degree from Anderson University, a master's degree from Tulane University and pursued her doctoral studies at Indiana University before returning to Anderson University to join the science department faculty where she taught for approximately 40 years.

She is survived by two sons, David and Lowell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gradie LaNoyette.

The Rev. Kenny Cutrer conducted the funeral today at Greenoaks Funeral Home, Baton Rouge.

Burial was at Greenoaks Memorial Park.

SARAH ANTHONY

TICKFAW -- Sarah Anthony, 85, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond.

A native of Sweetwater, she is survived by four daughters, Carleen Willie, Darrell Dean Barbier and Betty Stevens, all of Tickfaw, and Ruth Harper; one son, Calvin Lee Anthony of Hammond; 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Darrell Calvin Anthony; her parents, Richard and Sallie Holden Anthony; two daughters, Jane Francis and Sally Anthony; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Richard, John, Hebert and Son Anthony; and two sisters, Maudella Stafford and Beatrice Chapman, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be Sunday at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, from 6 to 10 p.m., and Monday from 8 a.m. until the funeral at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Little River Pentecostal Church, Cemetery.

CURTIS WILLIAM BRADDOCK

HOLLINS, Ala. -- Curtis "Fuzzy" William Braddock, 47, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, after a long battle with diabetes and related illnesses near El Paso, Texas , while on vacation.

Born in New Orleans, he was a truck driver by profession who mostly worked for Tyson Foods of Oxford, Ala., until he became disabled.

He is survived by his mother, Princess Louise Wilson Braddock James; his stepfather, Jimmie James of Meridian, Miss.; a sister, Jo Ann Braddock Herndon of Hot Springs, Ark.; and two brothers, James Curtis Braddock of Hollins, Ala., and William Ray Braddock of Austin, Texas .

He was preceded in death by his father, Curtis William Braddock Sr.; his brothers, Kenneth Raburn Braddock, Curtis "Junior" William Braddock Jr.; and two sisters, Gertie Mae Braddock Leveritt and Dorothy Dean Braddock Moates.

Visitation will be tonight from 3 to 7 p.m. at Radney- Smith Funeral Home, 310 N. Elm Ave., Sylacauga, Ala. Burial will follow in Hollins Cemetery, Hollins. The Rev. Ray Cooper will be in charge.

PAUL CLIFTON GRANIER, SR.

HOUMA -- Paul Clifton "P.C." Granier Sr., 96, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at The Suites at Sugar Mill Point in Houma.

He was a resident of The Suites at Sugar Mill Point in Houma, a native of Edgard and a longtime resident of Hammond and Ponchatoula. He was a retired New York Life agent of 35 years with 60 years in the insurance business. He served on the board of directors at Ponchatoula Homestead and was a past president of the Kiwanis Club in Ponchatoula. He was a member of the Ponchatoula Volunteer Fire Department. He served on the City Council in Ponchatoula and was a parishioner of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Hammond.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Vivian Simon Granier of Houma; a daughter, Janice G. Gruber of Mount Dora, Fla.; a son, Paul C. Granier Jr. of Houma; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

His parents, Emilienne Joseph and Delia Schmidt Granier; six brothers, Jack, Claude, Emile, Melvin, Norman and Eddie Granier; and two sisters, Esther Poche and Marie Bossier, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be at Harry McKneely & Son in Hammond Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the Rev. Deacon Schanzbach conducts the funeral at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in Greenlawn Mausoleum.

DOROTHY MIHLON HUBER

Dorothy Mihlon Huber, 86, a native of New Jersey, died at North Oaks Medical Center, Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004.

She attended Woodland Park Baptist Church, Hammond.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert Huber of Hammond; one son, Robert Alan Huber of Virginia; one daughter, Joanne Huber Showalter of Hammond; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral was today at noon, and burial was in Parklawn Mausoleum.

Geisler Funeral Home, Hammond, was in charge.

EMMA ALBERTA COOPER JAMES

KENTWOOD -- Emma Alberta Cooper James, 60, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at her home.

Survivors include her husband, Noah James Jr. of Kentwood; her sons, Robert Wesby Sr. and Joe A. Cooper, both of Hammond, and Noah "Dewayne" Cooper of Kentwood; four daughters, Phyllis Elzy, Cynthia Wesby, Rosie Wesby Gibson and Tonya Elzy Cryer, all of Kentwood; six sisters, Lucille L. Thompson of New Orleans, Clementine "Ada" McGee, Helen Lard and Linda L. Gayton, all of Kentwood, Janice E. Williams of Osyka, Miss., and Barbara Ann Elzy of Greensburg; five brothers, Matthew Lard Jr. of Kentwood, James Lard of Independence, Robert Earl Lard of Belle Chase, Hollis Elzy Jr. of Port Hudson and Percy Lee Elzy of Angie; her mother, Rosie Cooper Lard of Kentwood; 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Her father, Hollis Elzy Sr., preceded her in death.

Visitation will be Sunday at Richardson Funeral Home, Amite, from 5 to 9 p.m. The Rev. Lee Allen Pounds Jr. will conduct the funeral Monday at Sweethome Baptist Church at 1 p.m. followed by burial at the church cemetery.

TAMMI BROWN

MARTINSBURG, W.V. -- Tammi Brown, 44, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at her home in Martinsburg.

She is survived by her daughter, Amanda Barrois of Albany; three sons, Danny White of San Antonio, Beaux Brown and Lee Brown, both of Baton Rouge; one grandchild; her mother, Sandy White of Florida; her brother, Alan White of Florida; three sisters, Vicki Hawkins of West Virginia, Terri Milius of Indiana and Lori Smith of Florida; and her stepmother, Nancy White of Naples, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her father, Hugh "Arky" White .

Angela Bertone will conduct a memorial service Saturday at Hillcrest Cemetery, Baton Rouge.

No time or funeral home was provided.

HELEN BROOKS GATES

KENTWOOD -- Helen Brooks Gates, 73, a housewife, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond.

A native of New Orleans, she was a member of Spring Creek Baptist Church where she served a clerk for many yeas and was a Sunday School teacher, a Vacation Bible School teacher, a member of the choir and the Sunshine Choir.

She was also a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Walter T. Ott Order of Eastern Star No. 217 of Spring Creek.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur Gates of Kentwood; one daughter, Susan Simpson of Kentwood; two grandchildren; four sisters, Dorothy Brooks of Kentwood, Mildred B. Easley and Beverly B. LeTard, both of Amite, and Catherine B. Wright of Fairhope, Ala.; and two brothers, George A. Brooks Jr. of LaMarque, Texas , and Richard E. Brooks of Kentwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George A. Brooks Sr. and Bettie Hart Brooks; and one sister, Anna B. Reed.

Visitation will be today at McKneely Funeral Home, Kentwood, from 6 to 9 p.m. with an Eastern Star service at 7 and Thursday at Spring Creek Baptist Church from 10 a.m. until the funeral at 11, the Rev. Danny Smith officiating.

Burial will be at Spring Creek Cemetery, Spring Creek.

YVONNE VAN WESEMAEL SCHIRO

INDEPENDENCE -- Yvonne Van Wesemael Schiro, 83, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, at her home.

A native of Brussells, Belgium, she was a housewife.

Survivors include her husband, Nick P. Schiro of Independence; her daughter, Claudette Schiro Hayden of Amite; one son, Gary Anthony Schiro of Amite; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Camile Remy Van Wesemael; her mother, Alphonsine Van Wesemael; one brother, Joseph "Jeff" Van Wesemael; and one sister, Madeline Giele.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held this morning at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, and burial was in Colonial Mausoleum, Independence.

McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, was in charge.

LORAINE REED BATES

ROSELAND -- Loraine Reed Bates, 70, a native of McComb, Miss., died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, at Belle Mason Nursing Home, Hammond.

Survivors include three sons, Larry and Melvin Bates, both of Jackson , Miss., and Frank Quillen of McComb; one daughter, Janice Holland of Independence; three sisters, Mary Ester Hughes of New Orleans, Margaret Ester Butler of McComb and Lucille Tates of Gilsburg, Miss.; and one brother, Jessie James Reed of Gilsburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Reed and Johnnie M. Levi Reed; one daughter, and one brother, Willie J. Reed.

Visitation will be Friday at Richardson Funeral Home, Amite, from 5 to 8 p.m. The Rev. Bobby Ray Showers will conduct the funeral Saturday at Rosevalley Baptist Church, Roseland, at 1 p.m.

Burial will be at Big Zion Cemetery, Roseland.
