RUSSELL GAINES HOLT

NEW ORLEANS -- Russell Gaines Holt, 68, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at Touro Infirmary.

He is survived by his wife, Sue L. Holt; one daughter, Kelly Holt Bates; two sons, Russell G. Holt Jr. and Roy Scott Holt; four sisters, Bonnie Holt King, Bobbe Holt Cox, Brenda Holt Montgomery and Beverly Holt Diaz; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one grandchild.

Visitation will be Thursday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic, 448 Metairie Road, Metairie, from 9:30 a.m. until a memorial service at 11.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 3340 Severn Ave., Metairie, LA 70002.

Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, Metairie, is in charge.

JACK ALLEN MAGRUDER

PONCHATOULA -- Jack Allen Magruder, 80, died Tuesday, July 27, 2007, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond.

A native of New Orleans, he was a U.S. Army pilot during World War II.

He is survived by four stepdaughters, Wilma Wright of San Antonio, Faye Russell and Susan Threeton, both of Independence, and Fran Carrington of Ponchatoula; and three stepsons, Harold Core of Kirbyville, Texas , James Core of Folsom and David Core of Ponchatoula.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Augustin and Alma Hotstream Magruder; his first wife, Jeannette Core Magruder; his second wife, Annie Core Magruder; one brother, Logan Magruder; and one sister, Betty Magruder.

A graveside service will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Holly Gardens Cemetery, Hammond.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society (Relay For Life), 817 Eden Oaks Drive, Ponchatoula, LA 70454.

Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, is in charge.

GARY CLAWSON SHURLEY SR.

PONCHATOULA -- Gary Clawson Shurley Sr., 61, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond.

A native of Baltimore, he is survived by his wife, Joyce Allen Shurley; three daughters, Marcy Overman of Ponchatoula, Barbara Perrilloux of Covington and Kimberly Shurley of North Carolina; one son, Gary Shurley Jr. of Ponchatoula; three sisters, Jo Ann Brown and Fredia Price, both of North Carolina, and Jean Horn of Arizona; two brothers, Thomas Shurley of Ponchatoula and Jackie Shurley of Atlanta; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gary and Alma Shurley; and one granddaughter, Jaime Shurley.

Visitation will be Thursday at Geisler Funeral Home, Hammond, from 6 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 until the funeral at 10 a.m.

Burial will be at Cooper Cemetery, Robert.

WILLIE GATLIN DUNN

NATALBANY -- Willie Gatlin Dunn, 92, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at Belle Maison Nursing Home.

A native of Pumpkin Center, she is survived by one son, Jessie Dunn of Loranger; two daughters, Helen Marchand of Natalbany and Joyce Palmer of Hammond; two stepdaughters, Mildred Griffing of Livingston and Inez Sander of Boston; two sisters, Esther Soape and Helen Delaune, both of Pumpkin Center; 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Pearl Dunn; her parents, Green and Ella Bigner Gatlin; one stepson, Robert Dunn; one brother, three sisters, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be today at Geisler Funeral Home, Hammond, from 6 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 8 a.m. until the Rev. Larry Brignac and the Rev. Gary Dennis conduct the funeral at 10.

Burial will be at Jerusalem Baptist Church Cemetery, Pumpkin Center.

CAMELIA VARNADO CARTER FIELDS

Camelia Varnado Carter Fields, 54, a native of Hammond, died Friday, July 23, 2004.

A member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, she was a community activist who was affiliated with Leadership Tangipahoa and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was a member of the Tangipahoa Senior Citizen, Martin Luther King, Second Saturday Morning Breakfast and We Care committees. She also served on the State of Louisiana Governor, the City of Hammond Recreation and the Tangipahoa Black Heritage boards.

At her church she was a member of the Usher Board as well as the Youth Department director. She was a member of the Humanitarian Society and served on the Facility Committee.

She was also employed as a youth counselor in the public school system and worked as a direct care worker for the Run-Away Shelter.

Her accomplishments also include being a member of the State of Louisiana Home and Foreign Mission Association and the State of Louisiana Black Caucus Association.

Survivors include her mother, Elizabeth Davis Varnado of Hammond; one daughter, Courtney Denise Carter of Hammond; one son, James Lee Carter II of Hammond; one sister, LaNita Varnado Johnson of Hammond; one brother, Tim Varnado of Hammond; and two grandchildren.

Her father, Willie Varnado Sr.; and two brothers, Willie Varnado Jr. and Roderick Varnado, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be tonight at Macedonia Baptist Church, Hammond, from 3 to 7 p.m. The Rev. Willie Gable will conduct the funeral Wednesday at 11 a.m., and burial will follow at Holly Gardens Cemetery.

N.A. James Funeral Home, Hammond, is in charge.

ANGELINE BARBER HULL

NATALBANY -- Angeline Barber Hull, 48, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond.

A native of Bogalusa, she is survived by her husband, Bertis Ray Hull of Natalbany; two daughters, Melanie Hull and Tammy Ogima, both of Natalbany; one sister, Susan Slade Hebert of Franklinton; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wesley and Hazel Ramirez Barber; and one sister, Ruby Richardson.

Visitation will be Wednesday at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, from 9 a.m. until the Rev. Joe Puma conducts the funeral at 2 p.m.

Burial will be at Robertson Cemetery.

HAZEL ZACHARY SIBLEY

Visitation will be tonight at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond for Hazel Zachary Sibley from 6 to 9 p.m.

Sibley, 91, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at her home. She was also a native of Hammond.

She is survived by two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Redick Sibley; one daughter, Martha Sibley; one brother, Allen Zachary; and her parents, Ada Carney Zachary and John Zachary, all preceded her in death.

Further visitation will be Wednesday at the funeral home from 8 a.m. until the funeral at 10.

Burial will be at Amite Cemetery.

IMRE TUZA

NEW ORLEANS -- A memorial service and private burial were held Monday at Parklawn Cemetery in Ponchatoula for Imre Tuza, 69, who died Jan. 28, 2004.

A native of Hungary, he was a longtime resident of Louisiana and lived in Ponchatoula for many years.

He is survived by his children, Irma Tuza Fort, Jerry Adamcewicz, Linda Jackson and Lionel Adams; and 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Anna Tuza; two children, James Tuza and Terry Adams; his parents, Hermina Szucs and Istvan Tuza.

L.A. Muhleisen & Son Funeral Home, was in charge

GERALD C. WILKS

SLIDELL -- Gerald C. Wilks, 66, retired district manager of Piccadilly Cafeteria in Florida and unit manager for Piccadilly Cafeteria in Slidell, died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Slidell Memorial Hospital in Slidell.

A native of Baton Rouge, he is survived by his wife, Hazel Payne Wilks; one son, Joey Wilks of Independence; two daughters, Vicki W. Mason of Jackson ville, Fla., and Tammy W. Talbot of Huntsville, Ala.; one brother, Joe D. Wilks of Lake Charles; one step-sister, Ruth Soto of Lake Charles; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Grover Cecil Wilks and his mother, Lottie Perkins Wilks Butler.

Visitation will be today at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, from 6 to 10 p.m. and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. until the Rev. Murrell Ewing conducts the funeral at 11.

Burial will be at Twin Pines Cemetery, Holden.

JESSIE R. JAMES

BATON ROUGE -- U.S. Army veteran Jessie R. "Sonny" James, 78, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at The Care Center, Baton Rouge.

A native of Mount Hermon, he was a retired farmer.

He is survived by one daughter, Jackie Mack of Hammond; two sisters, Devoria "Zadoc" Wilson of Mount Hermon and Katherine Washington of Baton Rouge; and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Crystal Springs AME Church, Mount Hermon, until the Rev. Roshell Brumfield conducts the funeral at 11.

Burial will follow at Crystal Springs Cemetery.

Crain and Sons Funeral Home, Franklinton, is in charge.
