DIRKS SR., CHARLES L.
Died at 7:28 a.m. Monday, July 19, 2004, in Gonzales at age 84. He was a retired grocer who owned a popular grocery store at the Galvez "Y." A longtime Prairieville resident, he Passed away after a rigorous bout with lung cancer and two broken hips. Born in South Dakota and raised in Minnesota, he moved to Baton Rouge after service in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the Italian Campaign and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He had a successful career in the grocery business working for Capital Foods and National Food Stores. He helped L.C. LeBlanc Sr. start Pay Less Food Store in Gonzales and was its first manager. He was affectionately known as "Honey." interment in St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Cemetery, Smoke Bend. Survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Louise "Leisa" LeBlanc Dirks; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles L. "Chuck" Dirks Jr. and Cheri Davis Dirks of Tyler, Texas ; a daughter and son-in-law, Cathy Dirks Hurley and Timothy P. Hurley of Bronxville, N.Y.; a son, David L. Dirks, of Baton Rouge; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

ENGLER, LEONA GAUTREAU
A native and resident of Gonzales, she died at 9:15 a.m. Friday, July 23, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Gonzales. interment in Hope Haven Cemetery. Survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Pheral and Jay Bourque, Gonzales; a son and daughter-in-law, Stanley and Ollie K. Engler, Walker; two grandchildren, Duane Bourque and wife Melissa B. and Deneé Babin and husband Dale, all of Gonzales; three stepgrandchildren, Barry Shipp, Charles and wife Jennifer Shipp and Darren and wife Barbara Shipp; three great-grandchildren, Ian and Quinn Babin and Daniel Shipp; and four stepgreat-grandchildren, Lacey, Scott, Brandon and Danielle Shipp. Preceded in death by her husband, George H. Engler; parents, Simon and Anaise Braud Gautreau; four brothers, Leon, Darville, Julius and Noah Gautreau; and four sisters, Angelle Parent, Helen Babin, Juliene Babin and Julie Braud. She was a member of St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church.

LANDRY, DOROTHY MARIE LANDRY
A homemaker, she died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at her home in Klotzville. She was 74 and a native of Brusly St. Martin. interment was in St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Paincourtville. Survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Henry W. Jr. and Lena Coupel Landry, Donaldsonville; three sisters, Anna Belle Chedotal, Klotzville, Marina Aucoin, Belle Rose, and Velma Causin, Donaldsonville; three brothers, Willie B. Landry, Belle Rose, Clive Landry, White Castle, and Cleve Landry, Belle Rose; two grandchildren and spouses, Jodi Landry and Bill Lee, Baton Rouge, and Tobi Landry and Jude Troxclair; and a great-grandson, Alex Troxclair. Preceded in death by her husband, Henry W. Landry Sr.; and parents, Felix and Nellie Bourg Landry.

LANDRY, PETER ROCK
A native of White Castle, Peter died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Villa Feliciana Hospital in Jackson . Born Jan. 11, 1925, he was 79. He is survived by brothers, Frank "Whitey" Landry, Donaldsonville, and Dudley Noel Landry Sr., Port Allen; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Landry; his mother, Josephine DiGiovanni Landry; a brother, Lester Landry; and a sister, Virginia L. Brigalia. He also leaves behind special friends, David Ishmael, Zeke Sanchez, Tutt Ray, Donna Stevens and Pricilla. Special thanks to social workers, Ms. Alice and Ms. Marguerite, Dr. Register and Dr. Attuso, nurses and all caregivers during his stay at the Villa Feliciana Nursing Home. His remains are entrusted to the Anatomical Board of Louisiana . A memorial will be held in his honor at a later date. He was of the Catholic faith.

RUESGEN, DAVID J. "CHIEF"
A security guard at BASF Wyandotte, he died Thursday, July 22, 2004. He was 52, a resident of Sorrento and a U.S. Navy veteran. Visiting at Welsh Funeral Home, Gonzales, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 27. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. He is survived by his wife, Sheila Delhommer Ruesgen; a daughter, Heather Ruesgen, Scotland; two stepdaughters, Belinda Monteverde, Prairieville, and Dari Donaldson, Sorrento; a son, Joseph Ruesgen, Scotland; a stepson, Carl Delhommer, New Iberia; a sister, Tyke Ruesgen, La Crosse, Wis.; two brothers, Dan Ruesgen, Wisconsin, and Bernie Ruesgen, Greeley, Colo.; eight stepgrandchildren and various nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margie and Joseph Ruesgen. The family requests no flowers.

WARD JR., WILLARD
A retired laborer with Uniroyal Chemical Co. and a resident of Gonzales, he died at 8:50 p.m. Friday, July 16, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales. He was 66 and a native of Woodville, Miss. interment in St. Paul Cemetery, Gonzales. Survived by two daughters, Veronica and husband Larry Harris and Sharon Collins; five sisters, Carrie Kelly, Ann Calvin, Mildred Burnett, Pride and husband Willie Smith and Ora Carey; five brothers, Johnson and wife Sandra, Hubert and wife Lois, Nelson and wife Alice, Al Ray and Richard and wife Renee Ward; a godchild, Ramsey Ward; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by his parents, Rosie and Willard Ward Sr.; a brother, Jerry Ward; and two sisters, Mary Batiste and Beverly Darville.

WARNER, DIANNE MOORE
Dianne Moore Warner Passed away Thursday, July 22, 2004, at her residence in Prairieville. Dianne was born to the union of Frank Hamilton and Lee Ester Johnson on April 3, 1951. Dianne was a licensed practical nurse for many years. She loved taking care of many in the community who needed her assistance. She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Derrick T. Moore and James J. and wife Rose Moore; three daughters, Stephanie M. and husband Cedric Scott, Nicole Moore and Faith L. Williams; four sisters, Shirley Hamilton, Regina Moses, Marilyn and husband Alvin Raby and Vanessa J. Brown; a brother, Donald Ray Johnson ; nine grandchildren, Darius, Kerry and Kierra Moore, Ciera Scott, Kiala, Roderick, Andia and Angel Moore and McKenzie Williams. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lee Ester Johnson Ramirez; father, Frank Hamilton; a sister, Shirley-Ann Robinson; a brother, David W. Johnson ; and a grandchild, Kera R. Moore.

WATTS SR., GARY L.
A resident of Denham Springs and an employee of C.N. Railroad for 33 years, he died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Ochsner Foundation Hospital, New Orleans. He was 52 and a native of Baton Rouge. Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Park in Denham Springs. Survived by his wife, Nora L. Watts, Denham Springs; mother, Coraline Watts, Walker; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gary L. Jr. and Tonia Watts, Denham Springs; Joshua Watts, Prairieville; a sister, Leola Causey, Walker; and his one and only pride and joy, granddaughter, Haley Watts. Preceded in death by his father, Lester H. Watts. Pallbearers were Van Foster, Myron Saucier, Ricky McLean, Kim Valentine, and John and Woody Landry. Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Guzzardo and Anthony Ferro Sr. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Denham Springs. He was a volunteer coach for Denham Springs football and baseball.

CARVILLE, LLOYD AUGUSTUS
"For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, Š nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, Š nor any created thing can be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus Our Lord." Romans 38-39 Born Sept. 12, 1923, in Carville, Lloyd died in peace surrounded by love on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, after a brief illness. All the created machines and instruments of modern medicine and the skill and compassion of the best doctors and nurses could not save his life, but they tried valiantly for five days. He was a man who enjoyed life with great zest; helping others was his forte. He retired from the LSU Cooperative Extension Service after more than 32 years, serving first as a county agent in St. Francisville and later in Covington, then had a distinguished career as an agricultural economist. Since retirement he enjoyed serving occasionally as an agricultural expert witness. In World War II, he served in The Mighty Eighth Air Force, flying 35 missions over Germany as a ball turret gunner in a B-17. To his comrades he was "Curly." To us he is a hero. In 1945 he returned to get his bachelor and master's degrees from LSU. To his Sigma Nu pals there he was "Killer." He studied for his doctorate on fellowship at the University of North Carolina. He relinquished that dream when his first wife, Ann Monget Carville, became ill with multiple sclerosis. He is survived by his wife, (Nenie) Ruth Farr Carville of Baton Rouge; stepson Travis Thompson of Kansas City; stepdaughter Jena P. Smith, her husband Kevin Smith, and their daughter Anneliese Smith of Lafayette; also by his sister, Mary Pearl "Girlie" (Mrs. Thomas) Blakeney; and sisters-in-law, Elsie (Mrs. Louis) Carville and Erline (Mrs. David) Carville. To his family and friends he was "Bleeh" and to his many treasured nieces and nephews he was "Ank." They are Louis "Fritz" Carville, Jr., Susan C. and Charles Mittendorf, Joan C. Ervin, Johnny and Cammie Carville, Buddy and Fran Carville, Christine Carville, Sammy and Heddie Carville, James and Mary Carville, Bonnie C. and Mike Reames, Holly (Mrs. Bill) Carville, Mary Anne C. and David Olivier, Gail C. and Ricky Bourgeois, Pat C. and Sparky Hoffman, Steve and Ann Carville, Angela C. and Gary Crochet, Tom and Pat Blakeney, Kathy and Travis Morrison, Mike and Anne Blakeney, Connor Blakeney, and Dan and Paula Blakeney. Great-nieces and great-nephews are Adele Hutchinson, Campbell and Tamara Hutchinson, Shelley Ervin, Leslie Ervin Trahant and her son, Christopher, Stacey E. and Bill O'Malley, Jennifer C. and Chris Polanski, John "Trey" Carville III, Fritz Carville, Hedy Logan Carville, and John Madison Carville II, Matty Carville, Emma Carville, Matt Reames, Will and Carla Reames and their children, Grace and Grant, Patrick Reames, Brian Reames, Jamie Reames, Courtney Reames, Dudley Gattis, Jonathan Olivier, Kate Olivier, Rich Bourgeois, Jim and Jenee Bourgeois, Adam Bourgeois, Michael Paul Bourgeois, Keith Hoffman, Thomas Hoffman and Kathleen Hoffman, Stephen Carville, Claire Carville, Jo-Jo Carville, Nicholas Carville; Jeanne Crochet, Lonnie Crochet, Michelle B. and Davin Meyer, Susannah M. and Michael Curtis and their baby Quinn Michael, Tracey and Matt Keeven, Chris and Aimee Morrison, Annie Morrison, John Morrison, Ruthie Blakeney, Kate Blakeney, Zach Blakeney, and Kathleen Blakeney. He was preceded in death by his first wife; his older brothers, Louis, David and Chester Carville, and Lucille "Nippy" (Mrs. Chester) Carville; nephews, Bobby Carville and Bill Carville; and a niece, Dee (Mrs. Connor) Blakeney. He was the son of Louis A. and Mary Pearl Slangrup Carville. Lloyd long ago arranged for his body to go to the LSU School of Medicine. His ashes will be interred at some future time in a place he chose.

DAIGLE, MICHAEL WAYNE "MIKE"
Born March 10, 1965, he died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003. He was 38. interment in St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church cemetery, Gonzales. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carroll J. Daigle Sr.; two sisters, Monica Daigle and Claire Slaughter and husband Pruett Slaughter of Gonzales; a brother, Carroll "Butch" Daigle and wife Jana of Houma; and nine nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Daigle Sotile. He was a graduate of Ascension Catholic High School and St. Joseph Seminary College, and attended Notre Dame Seminary of New Orleans. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Theresa of Avila School, 212 E. New River, Gonzales, LA 70737. Ourso Funeral Home, Gonzales, in charge of arrangements.

DUTTON, DWAYNE PAUL
A security guard with Wakenhutt Corp. and a resident of Prairieville, he died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, in Baton Rouge. He was 37 and a native and former resident of Lafayette. He was a U.S. Navy veteran with 16 years of service. interment in Prairieville Community Cemetery. Survived by his wife, Tracy Argrave Dutton, Prairieville; parents, Roger and Margaret Gallet Dutton, Lafayette; a son, Blaine Michael Dutton, Prairieville; a sister, Laina Marie Dutton, Little Rock, Ark.; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carl and Jan Argrave, Prairieville. Preceded in death by his grandparents.

GARNETT, SR. GEORGE
"The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want." Psalm 23:1. George Garnett was born Nov. 16, 1927, and departed this life Monday, Oct. 6, 2003. He was born in Donaldsonville (Smoke Bend) to Lucinda and Grandison Garnett Sr. Early in life, he joined First Baptist Church in Donaldsonville. Later, when he moved to New Orleans, he joined New Testament Baptist Church, pastored by his brother-in-law, the Rev. Wilbur Horton. While in New Orleans, he worked for Public Belt Railroad and retired after 30 years of service. When he moved to Baton Rouge, he became a member of Pleasant Valley Church of God in Christ, pastored by Elder Dewitt Brock Jr. He remained a loyal member until his death. On Oct. 11, 1975, he married Dorothy Jackson and to this union were born five children: Israel, Georgette, Jesse, Karyn and Miriam Garnett. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Dorothy Jackson Garnett; six sons and two daughters-in-law, James and Rose Garnett of Donaldsonville, Bernard and Augustine Garnett, Roy Michael Garnett and Daniel Garnett, all of New Orleans, and Israel and Jesse Garnett, both of Baton Rouge; eight daughters and four sons-in-law, Joyce Garnett and Clarence Gipson of Donaldsonville, the Rev. Cynthia Garnett and Arthur Wade of LaPlace, Janet Garnett and Etris Buie, Mona Garnett Stewart and Michelle Garnett Hamilton, all of New Orleans, and Georgette and Nolan Garnett, Karyn Garnett and Miriam Garnett, all of Baton Rouge; mother-in-law, Ophelia Jackson of Baton Rouge; former wife, Shirley Garnett of New Orleans; a brother, Allen Garnett of Fort Worth, Texas ; 21 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three children, George Garnett Jr., Cheryl Garnett Mutley and Jerard Garnett Sr.; two sisters, Louise Horton and Victoria Stell; and two brothers, Lawrence Garnett and Grandison Garnett Jr. interment in Southern Memorial Gardens.

HEBERT, IDA AUCOIN
A homemaker and resident and native of Pierre Part, she died at 11:25 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, in Morgan City. She was 92. interment in St. Joseph Cemetery. Survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Louise and Charles Templet, Pierre Part, and Bursie Landry, Stephensville; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Sidney and Velma Aucoin and Percy and Sherry Aucoin, all of Pierre Part; two sisters, Octave Aucoin and Elise Daigle, both of Pierre Part; a brother, Ulysse Cavalier, Pierre Part; 18 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her first husband, Lovince Aucoin; second husband, Abel Hebert; a son-in-law, Leroy Landry; a grandchild, three great-grandchildren and 13 brothers and sisters.

HUMPHRIED, IRA ELTON "HUM"
A retired water treatment plant operator for Jefferson Parish and a resident of Donaldsonville, he died at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at Donaldsonville House Nursing Home. He was 75 and a native of Cairo, Ga. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict. Visiting at Ourso Funeral Home, Donaldsonville, from 8 a.m. Tuesday until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Lloyd Delatte. interment in Ascension Catholic Cemetery. Survived by his wife, Jennie Latino Humphries, Donaldsonville; four sisters-in-law, Ann Humphries, St. Cloud, Fla., Marie Humphries, Ochlocknee, Ga., Annie Humphries, San Diego, and Lena Latino Dinino, Donaldsonville; a brother and sister-in-law, Wiley and Norma Humphries, Melbourne, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Joseph and wife Mary Alice Latino, Donaldsonville; and a sister-in-law, Angelina Latino and husband Huey Theriot, Raceland. Preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Eugene and Susan Della Brook Humphries; a sister, Bernice Elkes; five brothers, Curtis, Herbert, J.T., Cecil and James Humphries; sisters-in-law, Sepaphine Latino Fisher and Virginia Latino; and brothers-in-law, Albert Fisher and Steve Dinino. He was a member of the American Legion and AmVets.

LOMAS, HARRY LEE
A house mover and lifelong resident of Ascension Parish, he died at his residence in Prairieville on Friday, Oct. 3, 2003. He was 50. interment in Do Right Full Gospel Baptist Church cemetery., Gonzales. Survived by his mother, Augustine Lomas, Prairieville; stepchildren, Carol Bailey, Prairieville, Ray Bureau, Gonzales, Mary Bureau Davis, Prairieville, and Lori Ann Bureau, Geismar; a son, Andre L. Lomas, Gonzales; 19 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five sisters, Gloria Green, Gonzales, Geraldine Levy, Head Of Island, Helen Lomas, Baton Rouge, Catherine Lomas, Prairieville, and Lorraine Glover, Gonzales; five brothers. Sidney Lomas Jr., Abbeville, James R. Lomas and John A Lomas, both of Gonzales, Eddie L Lomas Sr., and Robin Lomas, Prairieville, two daughters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, five sisters-in-law, three godchildren, four aunts, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by his father, Sidney Lomas Sr.; a sister; and a devoted friend, Clotile Bureau.

MAYERS, LAWRENCE PAUL
A retired custodian with the St. Amant School System and a resident of St. Amant, he died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at his home. He was 86 and a native of Duckroost. He was a U.S. Army veteran. interment in Holy Rosary Catholic Church cemetery, St. Amant. Survived by a daughter, Mary Lee Guidry, St. Amant; a son, Ray Paul and wife Diane Mayers, St. Amant; four granddaughters, Julie Mayers, Winnfield, Kristie and Laurie Mayers, both of St. Amant, and Stacy G. Scarbrough, Baton Rouge; two grandsons, Bret and Bryan Guidry, both of St. Amant; and three great-grandchildren, Brittany, Samantha and Brandon. Preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Hebert Mayers; mother and father, Theotise Lambert and Lucien Mayers; four sisters, Amelei, Lucille and Annie Mayers and Adine Gonzales; and five brothers, Amaleus, Leon, Leus, Wickliff and Lucien Mayers. He was a member of the American Legion for more than 56 years and a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
