Mary Ann Olive Swilley

Mary Ann Olive Swilley, 89, died Thursday Feb. 24, 2005 in DeRidder. Mrs. Swilley was a member of Pentecostal House of Praise, where she taught Sunday School and helped raise money for the orphanage.

Survivors include, two daughters, Willie Mae Rigler of DeQuincy and Mary Fae Legier, husband, Lawrence. 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 24 great-great grandchildren.

Her husband, William “Bill” Parker preceded Mrs. Swilley in death.

Services for Mrs. Swilley were Saturday Feb. 26 in Pentecostal House of Praise. Rev. David Kennon and Rev. James Hamilton officiated. Burial was in Boxwood Cemetery.

Audrey Caldwell

Funeral service for Audrey “Ann” Cowan Caldwell, 78, of DeRidder were held Tuesday, March 1, in Hixson Funeral Home of DeRidder. The Rev. Winnie McMahon officiated. interment was in Newlin Cemetery in Singer.

Mrs. Caldwell died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, in her home in DeRidder.

She is survived by three sons, James and his wife, Gayle, of Leesville, Donald Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Moss Bluff, and Charles and his wife, Cindy of Singer; one daughter, Betty Louise of Singer; one brother-in-law, Bobby Caldwell of Hickory, Miss.; eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Caldwell Sr., formerly of Singer.

Mrs. Caldwell lived most of her adult life in Bay St. Louis, Miss., but moved to Singer upon retiring to be closer to her children.

Gilford "Radio" Colbert

Gilford “Radio” Colbert, 81, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, in DeQuincy.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, in Evergreen Baptist Church of DeQuincy. The Rev. James Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Community Cemetery in DeQuincy under the direction of Myers Colonial Funeral Home of DeQuincy. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. Friday, in the funeral home.

Mr. Gilford had lived in DeQuincy since 1958. He attended the Evergreen Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and choir member. He was a member of the VFW Post 3802.

Survivors include three sons, Gilford David Colbert of Beaumont, Tex., and Garland James Colbert and Eric Gerard Colbert, both of DeQuincy; three daughters, Loratha Bennett of Houston, Debra Colbert of DeQuincy, and Melenie Cox of Houston; three brothers, Frank Colbert of Chicago, Ira Colbert of Houston, and Nicodemus Colbert of San Bernadino, Calif.; two sisters, Ella Mae Lewis and Willa Mae Colbert, both of Baldwin; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Roger Dale Cooper

Roger Dale Cooper, 48, of DeQuincy, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005.

His funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 26, in Smokey Cove Pentecostal Church of Singer. Rev. George Smith officiated. Burial was in Hyatt Cemetery in Fields under the direction of Myers Colonial Funeral Home of DeQuincy.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Cooper of Orange, Tex.; five sons, Jeff Armstead of DeQuincy, Chad Cooper of Westlake, Cody Cooper of Ragley, Casey Cooper of DeQuincy and Chase Cooper of Lake Charles; his mother, Audry Cooper of DeQuincy; father, Billy Ray “Pete” Cooper of Bancroft; two brothers, Bryan Cooper and Gordon Cooper both of DeQuincy; one sister, Karen Cooper of DeQuincy; and four grandchildren.

John J. Landry, Jr.

John Joseph Landry Jr., 73, of Cameron died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, in the local hospital.

He was a native of Jennings, moving to Cameron in the early ‘50s. He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He worked as a diver in his younger years and retired as a welder. He was a past member of Cameron Parish District 1 Water Board and a longtime member of the American Welders Society.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Badon Landry of Cameron; three daughters, Jeannie George and her husband, David, of Lake Charles, Susan Beard and her husband, Terry, of Cameron and Sharon Brunet of Ragley; two sons, John Joseph Landry III and his wife, Vida, of Grand Chenier and Kim Landry of Oklahoma ; one sister, Beverly Walker of Jennings; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

His funeral was held Monday, Feb. 28, from Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Monsignor Louis Melancon officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home of Creole.

Charlotte Ann "Charky" Marcantel

Charlotte Ann “Charky” Marcantel, 67, of Vidor, Tex., died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at Memorial Hermann Baptist Hospital in Orange.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Mar. 1, at Claybar Funeral Home Chapel in Orange. Reverend Sam Edwards, Reverend Gerdia Shewmaker and Reverend A.T. Colley officiated. Burial was at Del Rose Cemetery in Vidor.

Mrs. Marcantel was born in DeQuincy. She had been a resident of Vidor since 1974. She was a member of the Church of God and Prophecy in Orange.

Survivors are her husband, Orville Benton Marcantel; Terry Lynn Marcantel of Vidor, daughter and son-in-law, Bertha Sue and Glen Williams of Vidor; sons, James B. Marcantel of Bunkie, Paul Douglas Marcantel of Sulphur, and Christopher Douglas Marcantel of Vidor; ten grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; sisters, Doris Delaine Allen of Ironton, Ohio, Bartie Standley of Houston and Judy Ann Barrow; and brother, Kenneth Ray Alston both of DeQuincy.

LeeRoy Deal

LeeRoy Deal, 74, formerly of DeQuincy died on March 5, 2005, in Fresno, Calif. He was a member of the graduating class of 1950 at DeQuincy High School, a veteran of the Korean War and a member of First Baptist Church of Florien.

He retired from John Manville in 1993 as a maintenance service supervisor. For his love of Yosemite Valley, he moved to North Fork, Cal. where he lived out his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Lavon Dunham Deal; two daughters, Wanda Kekauoha and husband, Eke, of Kailua Kona, Hawaii; Linda St.Clair and husband, Troy of Silverton, Col.; two sons, Tom Deal and wife, Doris of Summer, Wash. and Christopher Deal and Marcy of Nashville, Tenn.; three stepsons, Millard “Hap” Collins and wife, Virginia of the Philippines, Michael Dunham and wife, Debbie of Lumberton, Tex.; Raymond Dunham of Vidor Tex.; one stepdaughter, Lisa Hardy and husband, Cliff of Lumberton, Tex.; 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Other survivors are two sisters, Eldie Horton of Kilgore, Tex. and Pat Askew of McCaskill, Ark. Two brothers, Thomas “TD” Deal and Calvin Parker of DeQuincy. A memorial services was held March 9 in First Baptist Church of Oakhurst, Calif.

Service was held in Eastern Heights Baptist Church in DeQuincy. interment was in Masonic Cemetery of DeQuincy. Officiating were Rev. Bobby Franklin, First Baptist Church of Florien and Rev. John Reynolds, Eastern Heights Baptist Church under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to, Toledo Bend Baptist Ministry – 3840 Carter’s Ferry Rd. Zwolle, La. 71486 or to Eastern Heights Baptist Church.

Ronald Dale Singleton

Ronald Dale “Ronnie” Singleton, 51, of Starks, died Saturday, March 12, 2005 in Orange, Tex. He was a native and life-long resident of Starks.

Survivors include his son, Jody Singleton and wife, Melissa of Lake Charles; his mother, Joyce Snook of Vidor, Tex.; one brother, Robert Singleton of Vidor, Tex.; one sister, Gloria Singleton of Spurger, Tex.; a half-sister, Rebecca Hightower of Massachusetts; and four grandchildren.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 16, in the Emalie O’Brien Center in Starks. The Rev. Greg Frazier will officiate. Burial will be in Doyle Cemetery in Starks, under the direction of Hixson- Snider Funeral Home of DeQuincy.

Visitation is from 8 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday in the Emalie O’Brien Center.

Lucille M. Long

Lucille M. Long, 75, of DeQuincy, died Saturday, March 12, 2005, in DeQuincy.

She was born in New Iberia and had lived in DeQuincy for the past five years. She had previously lived in the Lake Charles-Sulphur area and at Toledo Bend.

Her funeral was held Tuesday, March 15, in Hixson-Snider Funeral Home. The Rev.. Glenn Chance officiated. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Norwood Long Sr. of DeQuincy; three sons, Norwood “Buddy” Long Jr. of DeQuincy, Ricky Long of Wimberly, Tex., and Patrick Long of Hecker; four daughter, Julie Benny of Knoxville, Iowa, Susan Willman of Many, Lisa Batchelor of Hecker and Melanie Long of Lake Charles; 17 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Ara Celia Towry

Tennessee - Ara Celia Towry, 85, Passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2005, in Lincoln County Nursing Home.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Brenda Gail Patterson and a granddaughter, April Pirtle.

Survivors include one son, Phillip Ray Towry of Sedro Woolley, Washington ; two daughters, Peggy Louise Sutherland of Ocala, Florida and Winda Kay VanWinkle of DeQuincy, Louisiana ; and 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Her visitation was held at Spry Funeral Home in Huntsville, Alabama on Friday, March 11, 2005 from 10:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M.

Her funeral was held at Charity Cemetery in Hazel Green, Alabama at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2005.

Harry Arabie

Harry Arabie, 63, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, in his residence.

He was a native of Orange, Tex., and had lived most of his life in Moss Bluff. He worked for Deep South Crane & Ironworkers for 15 years before retiring. He was a member of Ironworkers Local 710 for 39 years.

Mr. Arabie is survived by his wife, Jane Benoit Arabie of Moss Bluff; two sons, Brent Arabie and wife Kim of Moss Bluff and Quent Arabie and wife Julie of Lake Charles; one daughter, Tammy Kellogg and husband Greg of DeQuincy; eight grandchildren; three brothers, Robert Arabie of Moss Bluff and Wilson and Alvin Arabie both of Lake Charles; and two sisters, Vena Guillory of Conroe, Tex., and Louise Guillory of New Iberia.

His funeral was held Sunday Jan. 22, in Johnson Funeral Home. The Revs. David Hennigan and Randy Sullivan officiated. Burial was in Ritchie Cemetery in Moss Bluff.

Raney Griffin

Raney Lee Griffin, 76, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, in a local hospital.

He was a native of Merryville and lived most of his life in Ragley. He was a heavy equipment operator most of his life and worked for Industrial Construction Company for more than 20 years.

Mr. Griffin was a member of union Local 406 for 49 years, Louisiana Quarter Horse Association and St. Theodore Catholic Church and St. Pius Catholic Church.

Mr. Griffin is survived by his wife, Dorothy Dartez Griffin; son, Raney D. Griffin and wife Terri; and daughter, Becky Goins and husband Rodney, all of Ragley; six granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Marvin “Tootie” Griffin of Ragley; and two sisters, Audie Johnson of Merryville, and Mary Cavis of New Orleans.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 20, from St. Theodore Catholic Church. Monsignor Charles Dubois officiated. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery in Ragley.

Hazel Hyatt

Hazel L. Hyatt, 89, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006 in a local care center. She had lived in the Starks area since she was 15 years old and had lived in DeQuincy for the past 40 years. She was a member of Hargrove Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Verdie Williford of DeQuincy; one sister, Lucille Graham of Beaumont, Tex.; two grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, Jan. 24, in Hyatt Cemetery. Arrangements were handled under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home of DeQuincy.
