Jo Ann Peveto
Jo Ann Peeveto, 69, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, in her residence. She was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include her father, Leonard Windham; two sons, Royce Clark and Charlston Clark; one brother, David Windham; and three grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home.
Maxine Spiller
Maxine Spiller, 84, of Starks, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006 in the Sulphur hospital.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Claybar Funeral Home Chapel in Orange, Tex. Officiating will be the Rev. James Sellers, pastor of the Oak Grove Tabernacle in Hartburg. Graveside service and interment will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Rosepine Cemetery
in Rosepine.
Born in Rosepine, Mrs. Spiller was a former resident of Bridge City and had lived in Starks for the past 27 years. She was a charter member of the Bridge City Volunteer Fire and Rescue Ladies Auxiliary, the Oak Grove Tabernacle and the Quilt’n Cousins Quilt Club of Vinton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rhea Louis Spiller. She is survived by her daughters, Lydia Edwards of Remington, Va., Virginia Seal of Channelview, Tex., Judy Spiller of Huntsville, Ala., Dianne Spiller of Lake Charles, and Cindy Verdine of Starks; sons, Kenneth Spiller of Warren, Tex., and Darrell Spiller of Orange; brother, Clifford Wright of Vidor; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren
Mona Statum
Mona Marie Statum, a native of Wynette, Okla., and resident of Starks, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, in her residence. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Starks.
She is survived by her husband, Terry Statum; a son, Charles Barks; a stepson, Terry Statum Jr., and wife, Courtney; three daughters, Ronda Conner and husband, Terry, Rebecca Statum and husband, Charles, and Nyssa Lynn Barks; two sisters, Patricia Berry, and Norma Joe Townsend; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Her funeral will be Wednesday, Jan. 25 at First Baptist Church in Starks, with the Rev. Robert Davis officiating. interment will be in Smith Cemetery
under the direction of Hixson Snider Funeral Home.
Marguerite Clark
Marguerite “Margo” Clark, 54, died Friday, Mar. 17, 2006, in her residence.
She was a native of DeQuincy and a graduate of Grand Avenue high School. She continued her education at Southern University, Baton Rouge. She was formerly the choir director for the Greater Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church Young Adult Choir of the DeQuincy, Starks and LakeCharles area.
She worked for the Gulf Assistance Program in DeQuincy. Later she became a claims representative for the Social Security Administration.
She is survived by her daughter, Crystal ClarkTrafton and husband Thomas Trafton and daughter Denise Marie Clark, all of Lake Charles; two brothers, Clarence Edward Williams of DeQuincy and Darrell Edward Williams of Fresno, Tex.; three sisters, Martha Carrier of DeQuincy, Ester Augustine of Lake Charles and Christina Williams of Houston.
Her funeral was held Saturday, Mar. 25, in Mount Zion Baptist Church of DeQuincy. The Rev.Marvin Durgin officiated. Burial was inParadise Cemetery.
Carlton Trahan
Carlton James Trahan, 71, died Thursday, Mar. 23, 2006, in his residence.
He was a lifelong resident of Edgerly.
Survivors include his wife, Marlene Maricle Trahan of Edgerly; four sons, Edward J. Trahan of Vinton, Larry Trahan of Starks, and Craig and Troy Trahan, both of Vinton; three daughters, Carla Schmeltz and Judy Hanks of Starks and Tracey Junot of Mauriceville, Tex.; one brother, Milton Trahan of Vinton; 12 grandchildren; four great grandchildren.
His funeral was held Friday, Mar. 24, in Vinton. the Rev. Russell Beard officiated. Burial was in big Woods Cemetery.
James Poole
James “Bob” Poole, 83, died Saturday, Mar. 25, 2006, in Starks.
Mr. Poole served in the Coast Guard during World War II, fighting in the Pacific Theatre, where he was awarded the Medal of Heroism. He was a retired member of IBEW Local 861. He was a lifetime member of Starks VFW Post 4759, a member of American Legion Post 179 and a member of Masonic Lodge Calcasieu 400. He was Baptist.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jo Poole; brother, Phillip Poole and sister, Agnes Hudson.
Survivors include two sons, Raymond Poole and Bobby Poole, both of Starks; four daughters, Melody Landry of Lake Charles, Jo Gail Morris of Singer, Ruth Shaw of Millington Tenn., and Grace Moody of Collierville, Tenn.; five brothers,Bruce Poole and Larry Poole, both of Starks, Marvin Poole of Many, Marshall “Sonny”Poole of Vidor, Tex., and Curt Poole of West Columbia, Tex.; two sisters, Verble Kingston of New Boston, Tex. and Billie “Cup” Clanton of Cordova, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Starks. The Rev. Robert Davis officiated. Burial was in Miller Cemetery
in Starks under the direction of Myers-Colonial Funeral Home.
Penny Fontenot
Leola Moss Perkins “Penny” Fontenot, 70, died Friday, May 19, 2006 in a Lake Charles hospital after a brief illness.
Mrs. Fontenot, who was living in Moss Bluff at the time of her death, was a former resident of DeQuincy. She had been married to the late Edgar Perkins, Jr., local attorney, and had been active in Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church, DeQuincy Rotary Club and other local organizations.
She was a native of Plaquemine and lived in Lake Charles much of her life. She graduated in 1953 from LaGrange Senior High School and attended the American Institute of Banking.
She retired after 46 years of service as vice president and marketing director. Her banking career began at Calcasieu Marine National Bank and included service at American Fletcher Bank, Lakeside National Bank, First National Bank of Lake Charles and Bank One.
Community organizations she has been affiliated with include the Better Business Bureau, United Way of Southwest Louisiana , Lake Charles YMCA, Southwest Louisiana Health Counseling Service, Louisiana Council on Economic Education, Calcasieu Parish Junior Achievement, Gulf States Utilities Consumer Advisory Panel, Women’s Commission of Southwest Louisiana , Lake Charles Mayor’s Commission for Women, McNeese State University Advisory Council, DeQuincy VFW Auxiliary Post 3231 and the Catholic church.
She was chairman of the Our Lady of LaSalette 40th Anniversary and Golden Jubilee. She was a member of VFW Auxiliary Post 3231.
Mrs. Fontenot was honored with several awards throughout her life: the “Distinguished Service Award” in 1981 by the Louisiana Department of Health and Human Resources and the Quota Club “Woman of the Year Award” in 1982; the first woman in the history of the Young Men’s Business Club of Lake Charles to receive the “Citizen of the Year Award” in 1984; the Mayor’s Commission for Women “Member of the Year” in 1989; she was named the SWLA Health Counseling Service “Paul Harris Fellow” in 1994; the United Way of SWLA “Volunteer of the Year” in 1994; she was honored as the Temple Sinai “Sisterhood Patron of the Year” in 1997; and received the Diocese of Lake Charles “Diocesan Distinguished Service Award” in 2000.
She was a member of St. Theodore Catholic Church in Moss Bluff, the Ladies of LaSalette and the Serra Club of Lake Charles.
Survivors include her four daughters, Katherine “Kat” Robison Granger of Moss Bluff, Karen Robison Woodard and husband Dr. Charles of Lake Charles, Kim Robison Moss and husband Mickey of Moss Bluff and Karol Robison Scully and husband Rawlen of Pineville; one sister, Jame Sensat of Welsh; one brother, James P. “Jim” Moss Sr. of Lake Charles; and nine grandchildren.
Her funeral was Monday, May 22, from St. Theodore Catholic Church. Monsignor Charles Dubois officiated. Burial was in Consolata Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
Mrs. Cecil Gillis
Mrs. Cecil “Yankee” Virginia Gillis, 77, of DeQuincy died Saturday, May 20, 2006, in her residence.
She was born in Anacoco. She was a member of Pentecostal House of Praise.
She is survived by three daughters, Marie Hyatt and husband Gerald, Elsie Dickerson and husband “Cobby” and Genevieve Hollie and husband Danny, all of DeQuincy; two sisters, Elaine Buxton of DeQuincy and Margaret Beckwith of Singer; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Her funeral was held Monday, May 22, in the Pentecostal House of Praise. The Rev. David Kennon and Bro. Harry Methvin officiated. Burial was in Hyatt Cemetery
in Fields under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home.
Lester Hall
Lester James Hall, 81, died Thursday, May 18, 2006, in a local care center.
He was a resident of Longville and has resided in Iowa for 10 years. He was a World War II Army veteran and was Pentecostal. He had previously worked for the Beauregard Parish Police Jury in the road maintenance department.
He is survived by one sister, Lucille Hall of Iowa.
His funeral was held Sunday, May 21, in Hixson-Snider Funeral Home. The Revs. Rick Treece and Mike Cook officiated. Burial was in Perkins Cemetery.
Hollis Milton Midkiff
Hollis Milton Midkiff, 77, died Sunday, June 11, 2006 in DeQuincy. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 14 at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in DeQuincy from 5 - 10 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 15 at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in DeRidder. Burial will be in Ollieville Cemetery
in Cottonwood.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Midkiff of DeQuincy; four sons, Clay Midkiff of Ragley, Alvin Midkiff of Moss Bluff, Milton Midkiff of DeQuincy, and Jerry Hacker of Moss Bluff; three daughters, Gloria Lefleur of Mobile, Ala., Debbie Cooper of DeQuincy, and Susan Edward of Lake Charles; sister, Dovie Benoit of Moss Bluff; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Melvin Ray Crabtree
Melvin Ray Crabtree, 73, of Fields died in June, 2006. A celebration service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 14 in the First Baptist Church of Deweyville, Tex. Burial will be in the Barrow Family Cemetery.
Mr. Crabtree joined the Air Force in 1953 and was stationed at Chennault Air Force Base in Lake Charles. After his service in the military, he was employed by Huber Oil for 38 years. Upon his retirement in 1994, he continued working as a self-employed carpenter.
For 40 years, he served as a Sunday school teacher and an ordained Baptist deacon. He served as president of the Lions Club and was a board member of the Water Works District #2 in Beauregard Parish.
When Mr. Crabtree was diagnosed with cancer in August of 2004, he volunteered to be involved in a research program at M.D. Anderson Medical Center. He understood that this research would not help him, but it would help someone in the future. He started ministering to other cancer patients and continued encouraging them until he died.

John “J.T.” Tilden Kendall
John "J.T." Tilden Kendall, 54, died Sunday, June 11, 2006, in his residence.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Singer. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church.
Survivors include his loving wife of 33 years, Janice Kendall; his mother, Selest Kendall; one son, Corey Kendall; one daughter, Stephanie Elston and husband Darrell all of Singer; three brothers, James Kendall of DeQuincy, George Winston Kendall of Westlake and Jerry Kendall of Singer; three sisters, Lois Hollie and Judy Bennett both of Singer and Joan Hunt of Odessa, Tex.; and two grandchildren, Ashley and Brittany Elston. He was preceded in death by his father, George Kendall and one grandson, Tyler John Elston.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, in Bible Baptist Church of DeQuincy. The Bro. Mark Shultz and Bro. Ron Fox will officiate. Burial will be in Newlin Cemetery
