Shelby W. Jackson

Shelby W. Jackson , 54, died Thursday, June 8, 2006, in a Lake Charles hospital.

He was a native and lifelong resident of DeQuincy. He was a member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Anthony Leon Jackson ; one stepson, Sidney Mayeaux; one step daughter, Melissa Thomason Darson; one brother, Melvin Jackson ; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren all of DeQuincy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Mary Jackson .

His funeral was Monday, June 12, in Hixson-Snider Funeral Home of DeQuincy. Burial was in Hagar Cemetery.

Flander Howard Guillory

Flander Howard Guillory, 85, of Lake Charles died June 9, 2006, in the Southwest Louisiana War Veteran’s Home.

Mr. Guillory was born in Vidrine, and had lived most of his life in Lake Charles. He served in the U. S. Army in World War II. He was a carpenter and belonged to the Carpenter’s Local 196.

Survivors include five sons, John Roger Guillory of Church Point, Donald Patrick Guillory of Lake Charles, James Guillory of Westlake, Larry Kent Guillory of Moss Bluff, and Brian Guillory of DeQuincy; one daughter, Beverly Castillo of Lake Charles; two stepsons, Robert Wayne Smith of Turkey Creek and Allen Ray Smith of New Orleans; three stepdaughters, Verona Joy Hanson of New Orleans, Loretta Franks of Sulphur, and Lorine Soileau of Iowa; 26 grandchildren; and 22 great-children.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Guillory.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 10, in Johnson Funeral Home. The Rev. Rommel Tolentino officiated. Burial was in Consolata Cemetery.

Rosa Mae LaMoyea

Rosa Mae LaMoyea, 72, of Ragley died Sunday, June 11, 2006 in Ragley. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 14 at the Longville Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Larry Talent officiating. Burial will be in Beauregard Cemetery in DeRidder under the direction of Myers Colonial Funeral Home of DeQuincy.

Survivors include her husband, Glen LaMoyea of Ragley; five sons, Glynn Clement of Winnie, Tex., David Clement of Kingwood, Tex., Gary LaMoyea and Stephen LaMoyea, both of Ragley, Timmy LaMoyea of Crosby, Tex.; four daughters, Kathy Bertrand of Liberty, Tex., Belinda Rigsby of Winnie, Tex., Theresa LaMoyea of Lake Land, Fla., Susan Welsh of Katy, Tex.; one brother, Alvin Istre of Ragley; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Elmer Miller

Elmer “Black” Miller, 85, of Singer, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, in his residence.

He was born in Frey and moved to Lake Charles in 1947. He attended school in Iota. He retired from the state after 35 years. He was a member of St. Theodore’s Catholic Church.

He is survived by one sister, Mildred Miller of Eunice; and numerous grandchildren great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louviere Miller.

His funeral was held Tuesday, Oct. 3, in Hixson Funeral Home of Moss Bluff. Burial was in Ritchie Cemetery.

Norman Stains

Norman Stains, 82, died Oct. 2, 2006. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4 at Snider Hixson Funeral Home. interment will be in Miller Cemetery in Starks.

Survivors include Thomas Ashworth of Starks; one step-son, Horace Lynn Perkins of Bayou Lewis; one daughter, Sara Stains of Panacea, Fla.; one sister Corine Rutherford of Coushatta; and two nephews, Danny Stanley of Abbeville and Emmett Meshel of Winnie Tex.

Mack Eugene Pugh

Mack Eugene Pugh, 82, died Sept. 30, 2006 at a local hospital.

He was born May 28, 1924 in DeQuincy to former Mayor Henry C. Pugh and Pearl Francis Bishop Pugh. He was very active in track and football during his time at DeQuincy High School. He was a WWII Army veteran and was in the Asian Pacific Campaign. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and LSU Alumni. He retired from the main Post Office in Houston, where he was a manager. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of DeQuincy.

Survivors include two nieces, Susan Retzlaff-Karst and husband Gero of Iowa and Kathy Pugh Hill of Shreveport; one great nephew, Karl Hill of Shreveport. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; two brothers, Ersell C. Pugh and wife Gene Brown Pugh and Truman Pugh; three sisters, Christine E. Pugh, M. Elaine Pugh-Retzlaff and Husband Mitch B. Retzlaff and Henri Etta Pugh.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m.Thursday, Oct. 12, in Perkins Cemetery. The Rev. Mike Paris will officiate.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of DeQuincy Building Fund.

Lettie Barrow

Lettie Agnes Cooley Barrow, 87, of Ragley died Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, in the Care Center of DeQuincy.

Survivors include eight sons: Franklin, Monard, Roland, Donald, Steve and Max Barrow, all of Ragley, Gayland Barrow of DeQuincy and Bobby Barrow of Longville; four daughters; Sandra Grant of Ragley, Linda Janney of Walker, Carol Edwards of Ponchatoula and Lila Young of Vinton; and one sister, Dora Ogden of Orange, Tex.

She has 38 grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Barrow; two sons Timmy Lee and Lonnie Charles; and two grandchildren.

Her funeral was held Sunday, Dec. 3, in Faith Baptist Church of Ragley. The Rev. Don Perego officiated. Burial was in Hagar Cemetery in Ragley.

Louis Bertrand

Louis Bertrand, 66, of Sulphur died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, in a local hospital.

He had been general service manager for more than 30 years for Donaldson Ford and Shetler Ford. He was a member of Hargrove Bible Baptist Church in DeQuincy.

Survivors include his wife Zelda Bertrand; two sons, Wayne Bertrand and wife, Amanda, of Colorado City, Colo, and Tommy Bertrand and wife, Linda, of Durant, Okla.; one daughter, Lucie Mesuch and husband, Sam, of Sulphur; three brothers, Johnny Bertrand and Garland Bertrand of Sulphur and Charles Larry Bertrand of Kinder; one sister, Gail Sheridan of Kinder; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.

His funeral was held Tuesday, Dec. 5 in First Baptist Church of Sulphur. Dr. David Holder and the Rev. Paul Nugent officiated. Burial was in Mimosa Pines North Cemetery.

Pink Cane, Jr.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 2 at St. Mary Baptist Church in Port Barre, for Pink Bethel Cane, Jr., 86, who died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, at Opelousas General Health System.
Burial was in St. Mary Baptist Cemetery in Port Barre. Rev. Wilson Doomes officiated.

Survivors include four sons, Leo Cane, Nason Cane both of Waxia, Eugene Cane (Juanita) of Palmetto and Ivory Cane (Dieadra) of Opelousas; three daughters, Dorothy Comeaux (Homer) of Starks, Cinderella Rideau of Waxia and Yakita Cane of Opelousas; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Cane was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline Doomes Cane, his parents, Pink Bethel Cane, Sr., and Charity Johnson Cane, two sons, Henry and Charles Cane, one daughter, Lucy Cane, three brothers, Wilson, Freddie and Edward Cane, and one sister, Celestine Doomes.

Rev. Joseph Stevenson

The Rev. Joseph Louis Stevenson, 56, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, in a Baton Rouge hospital.

He was born in DeQuincy and was a graduate of Grand Avenue High School. He received a degree in theology and was a computer specialist.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Vera Stevenson.

Survivors include his wife, Natalie Taylor Stevenson of Houston; daughter, Twana Moore of Lake Charles; sisters, Clara Snell Lavan of DeQuincy and Jacqueline “Jackie” Stevenson of Indiana; brothers, Leon Stevenson of Plano, Tex. and Tommie Snell of Dallas; and four grandchildren.

His funeral was held Saturday, Dec. 2, at Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church of DeQuincy. The Rev. James B. Harris officiated. Burial was in Community Cemetery.

Iona Wise

Iona Wise, of Leesville, 88, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006, in an Alexandria care center.

Her funeral was held Saturday, Dec. 2, in Labby Memorial Funeral Home. Burial was in Castor Cemetery.

Mrs. Wise was preceded in death by her husband, W. H. Wise and son, Milton Jones.

Survivors are one son, Marvin Jones of Leesville; two sisters, Josephine Davis of Texas and Joy Brack of Singer; five grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Timothy Bertrand

Funeral services for Timothy Bertrand, 49, were held Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, at Hixson-Snider Funeral Home of DeQuincy. Mr. Bertrand was retired from Firestone and was a member of the local 106. He was Baptist.

He is survived by his wife, Terry Pinder Bertrand; parents, William and Gloria Bertrand, two sons, Mathew D. Bertrand and Jonathan Daniel Bertrand, both of Baton Rouge; two sisters, Trudy Hancock and husband Ray of Westlake, Donna Spence and husband Steve of Dayton, Tex.; three brothers, Mark Bertrand of Sulphur, Randy Bertrand and Nathan Bertrand, both of DeQuincy.

Susie Bryant

Susie Bryant, 86 died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2005, in Owasso, Okla. She was a native of Fields and a life time resident of DeQuincy. She was a member of The Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy. She was preceded in death by her husband; James I. Bryant and a son; Marvin “Bud” Bryant.

She is survived by one son, Ardell Bryant of LaPorte, Tex.; three daughters, Marcie Sasser and Laverne Presley, both of Sulphur; and Melba Nichol of Owasso, Okla.; one brother, Melvin Braneff of DeQuincy; six grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in The Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy, Monday, Nov. 28. Rev. D. Hennigan officiated with burial in Clark Cemetery under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home.

Cecil M. Carpenter

Funeral services for Cecil M. Carpenter, 81, of Oberlin were held Monday, Dec. 12, in Rush Funeral Home. The Rev. Shane Nugent officiated. Burial was in McGee Cemetery.

Mr. Carpenter died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005 in Oberlin.

He is survived by two sons, Laddy Beird and his wife, Carol of Singer, and Darrell Beird and his wife, Loretta of Watson; one brother, Earl L. Carpenter of Ragley; two sisters, Leona Manuel and Opal Reed, both of Oberlin; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
