Robert "Pete" Ozan

Robert “Pete” Ozan, 69, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005 in his residence in Tarkenton Prairie, Tex. He was a native of Starks.

He served in the U. S. Army in 1956-58.

He is survived by his wife, Tammy Ozan; four daughters, Cheryl Patat and husband Jerry, Kathy Morgan and husband, Rusty, Louise Summerford and Becky Ozan; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ruby Verdine of Starks, Louise Franks of Muse, Okla., Chris Ozan, of Iowa, and Virginia Badeaux of Port Barre.

A memorial visitation was held Thursday, Dec. 8 from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Friday, Dec. 9 from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.

Ida Dickens

Funeral services for Mrs. Ida Opal Dickens, 98, were held Tuesday Dec. 13, at Hixson-Snider Funeral Home in DeQuincy. Burial followed Wednesday, Dec. 14, in Lakeland Hill Cemetery in Burnet, Tex.

Mrs. Dickens was a member of First United Methodist Church of DeQuincy.

She is survived by one daughter, Deanna Nortman and husband Jerome of DeQuincy; four grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

Devenia Newman

Devenia Lovett Newman, 55, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, in a local care center.

She lived most of her life in Westlake. She graduated from Westlake High School.

Survivors include three daughters, Trinity Thomas and husband Ricky of Shreveport, Tonya Newman of Westlake, and Rhonda Felice and husband Mike of Ragley; three brothers, Donald Lovett and wife Carolyn of Westlake, Daniel Lovett and wife Dixie of Lake Charles, and Doc Lovett Sr. and wife Tonette of Shreveport; three sisters, Dolores Lovett of Virginia, Delma Wright of Ragley, and Debra Doucet of Westlake; and five grandchildren.

Her funeral was held Thursday, Dec. 15, in Hixson Funeral Home of Westlake. The Rev. Tommy Magee officiated. Burial was in Birdnest Cemetery in Gillis.

Louis Bodin

Louis C. Bodin, 64, died Dec. 14, 2005. He had lived in DeQuincy since 1979, coming from Bayou Sale. He was of Catholic faith and a member of St. Pius X Church in Ragley, where he served as an usher. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Watkins Bodin; two sons, Keith C. Bodin and wife, Audria L. of French Settlement, and Leith A. Bodin of Charleston, S.C.; his mother, Sadie Bodin of Franklin; one sister, Diane Bodin of San Diego, Calif.; and one granddaughter.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 17. interment was in Lone Oak Cemetery of Ragley

Jesse Horn

Jesse Lee Horn, 23, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, in a traffic accident.

He was a resident of DeQuincy and was a member of Victory Worship Center. He graduated from Associated Builder and Contractor as a welder and worked for Shaw Construction.

Survivors include his parents, Thomas Q. Horn and Lisa Gearen Horn of DeQuincy; one sister, Hollie Mire and husband Nate; maternal grandparents, Billy and Velma Gearen; paternal grandparents, Eugene and Yvonne Theriot; and great-grandfather, Robert Stanley, all of DeQuincy.

His funeral was held Sunday, Dec. 18, at Northside Baptist Church under direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home. The Revs. Mel Estes and Ray Clark officiated. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery of DeQuincy.

Doug Bertrand

Doug Broussard, 58, of Ragley, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, in a local hospital.

He was a native of Lake Charles prior to moving to Ragley 10 years ago.

Survivors include one son, Kevin Broussard of Lake Charles; one daughter, Paula Marie Broussard of Lake Charles; mother, Mary Jane Demarets Broussard of Lake Charles; two sisters, Gloria Broussard Booth of Lake Charles and Virgie Broussard Gilbert of Memphis, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Monday, Dec. 19, in Johnson Funeral Home. The Rev. Aubrey Guilbeau officiated. The body was cremated.

Harriet Seiford

Harriet Seiford, 84, died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005 in Lafayette.

Mrs. Seiford had lived in Ragley for 32 years, coming from Lake Charles.

She was a member of the Squyres United Methodist Church of Ragley.

She was married to George Seiford whom preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, George Anthony Seiford of Moss Bluff, Ronald Allen Seiford of Iowa; one daughter, Pamela Lynn Courville of Lafayette; three brothers; Russell Payne, Robert Payne, and Johnny Payne all of Blythville, Ark.; two sisters, Dorris Williams of Metropolis, Ill. and Virginia Duncan of Blythville, Ark.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 18, at Squyres United Methodist Church of Ragley under the direction of Hixson - Snider Funeral Home. Rev. Will Scheffield officiated, with burial in Squyres Risinger Memorial Park Cemetery in Ragley.

Bethel Royer

Bethel Royer, 84, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, in DeQuincy. She was lifetime resident of DeQuincy.

Mrs. Royer was a member of Calvary Pentecostal Church,

Survivors include two sons, Charles Hardy Royer and Ray E. Royer both of DeQuincy; three daughters, Sherry Pitre of DeQuincy, Lavern Clark of Ragley, and Beth Laviolette of Lafayette; two brothers, Shelby Rigmaiden of Ragley, and Thomas Rigmaiden of Westlake; four sister, Sheryl Oliphant of Woodville, Tex., Blanche Collins of Mauriceville, Tex., Janice Rigmaiden of Ragley, and Eugenia Witcher of DeQuincy; 17 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Royer was preceded in death by her husband; Hardy Royer and a daughter; Shelda Doyle

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 19, at Hixson-Snider Funeral Home. Rev. Terry Lee officiated with burial in Alston Cemetery in Ragley.

James Doyle Sr.

James Doyle Sr., 89, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, in a Lake Charles hospital. He was a long time resident of DeQuincy, and was retired from Union Pacific Railroad.

He was a member of the Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church, a senior deacon and a member of the Brotherhood and choir. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Doyle; ten children, James Doyle Jr., Laverne Richardson, Linda Doyle, all of Houston, Tex., Debra Davis of DeQuincy, Kim Peremon Doyle of Rowlett, Tex., Walter Snell of DeQuincy, Lynette Pullard of DeQuincy, Charles Pullard Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., Tarron Pullard of DeQuincy, Cyrus Pullard of DeQuincy; one sister, Willie Lee Guidry Antone; one brother, Odell Jones, both of Beaumont, Tex.; 79 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 2 god-children.

Barney Smith

Barney Lynn Smith, 67, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005. He was a lifetime resident of DeQuincy.

Mr. Smith was a member of First United Pentecostal Church. He had worked in security for Citgo Petroleum for 31 years and was a member of the DeQuincy Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Cole Smith; one son, Gerald Blaine Smith of St. Francisville; two stepsons, Mitchell Gearen of Sulphur and Michael Gearen of Pearland, Tex.; three daughters, Beverly Duhon of Orange, Tex., Sara Conrad of DeQuincy, and Angela Touchstone of Bancroft; one stepdaughter, Katy Burnett of Sulphur; one brother, Bo Larry Smith of DeQuincy; 11 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 19, at First United Pentecostal Church. Rev. T.D. Cardwell, Rev. Wayne Cardwell, Rev. Duane Sutton, and Rev. Jerry Dewitt officiated, with burial in Bilbo Cemetery.

Sharon Mullins

Sharon Lynn Mullins, 41, of Starks, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005 in Lake Charles.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 20 at Gambrell Baptist Church in Starks with burial in the Starks VFW Cemetery.

Mrs. Mullins was born in DeQuincy and raised in the Starks area. She graduated from Starks High School in 1982. She was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter of DeQuincy and Gambrell Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the family to cover medical expenses.

Survivors include her husband, William “Billy” Mullins of Starks; one son, Cody Lynn Mullins of Starks; one daughter, Ashley Nichole Mullins of Starks; her mother, Inez Harris Pinder of Starks; three brothers, Kenneth Shane Pinder, Mike Pinder and Clayborn Pinder, all of Starks; four sisters, Gaye Robinson and Retha Hudson, both of Vinton, Donna Pinder Edmons of Beaumont, Tex., and Carla Pinder of Morrisville.

Wade McDaniel

Wade H. McDaniel, 67, of DeQuincy, died Tuesday, Dec. 20 in a Lake Charles Hospital.

Funeral arrangement are pending through Hixson-Snider Funeral Home.

Eddie Marcantel

Eddie Wayne Marcantel, 62, of DeQuincy, died Tuesday, Dec. 20 in a Lake Charles Hospital.

Funeral arrangement are pending through Hixson-Snider Funeral Home.

Jenette Whatley

Jenette Cooley Heard Whatley, 91, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, in the local hospital.

She was a native and lifelong resident of DeQuincy and was a member of The Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy. She was a member of the Adah Chapter of the Eastern Star and had been a nurse at St. Patrick Hospital. She had been owner and operator of Janet's Cafe and had operated Dunn's Cafe.

Survivors include three daughters, Billie Jean Dunn LeBleu Brown and husband, Paul, Mary Heard Poole and husband, Shirley "Jr", and Betty Fern Hoosier, all of DeQuincy; four sons, Kenneth Ray Dunn and wife, Jerrie of Singer, Allen Heard, Jr. and wife Carol Ann, Hillard "Cooter" Heard and wife, Doris, and Carl Heard and wife, Lelia, all of DeQuincy; one sister, Jay Hollingsworth of Lake Charles; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by three spouses, Bennie Dunn, Allen Heard Sr., and Roy Whatley.

Her funeral was held Thursday, Dec. 22, in The Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy. The Revs. David Henigan and Wayne Cardwell officiated. Burial was in Perkins Cemetery under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home of DeQuincy.
