Charlie A. Burnett

Charlie A. Burnett, 79, of Ragley, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005 in a Lake Charles hospital.

He was a life resident of the Ragley area. He was an Army veteran and a member of the Bell Fire Tower Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma G. Burnett of Ragley; three daughters, Debra B. Gorman of Ragley, Trina G. Montgomery and Nancy D. Watson, both of Magnolia, Ark.; two sons, Timothy E. Burnett of Longville and Clayton D. Burnett of Pierre Park; six grandchildren; two sisters, Willow Reeves of Reeves, and Martha Whittington of Longville; one brother, Landry “Red” Burnett of Ragley.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 27 at the Bell Fire Tower Pentecostal Church in Bell. Rev. Mid Burnett officiated. Burial was in Dry Creek Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.

Jesse Lee Horn

Jesse Lee Horn, 23, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, in a traffic accident.

He was a resident of DeQuincy and was a member of Victory Worship Center. He graduated from Associated Builder and Contractor as a welder and worked for Shaw Construction.

Survivors include his parents, Thomas Q. Horn and Lisa Gearen Horn of DeQuincy; one sister, Hollie Mire and husband Nate; maternal grandparents, Billy and Velma Gearen; paternal grandparents, Eugene and Yvonne Theriot; and great-grandfather, Robert Stanley, all of DeQuincy.

His funeral was held Sunday, Dec. 18, at Northside Baptist Church under direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home. The Revs. Mel Estes and Ray Clark officiated. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery of DeQuincy.

Miza M. Hale

Miza Marie Manuel Hale, 89, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, in a Lake Charles hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of the Ragley area and was a member of Topsy Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, S. K. “Bill” Hale Sr.

Survivors include two sons, S. K. “Billy” Hale Jr. and wife Phyllis and Hiram Hale and wife Gloria, all of Longville; three daughters, Lois Guillory of Ragley, Loretta Griffin and husband Ralph of Ragley and Addieline Phillips and husband Rick of Denton, N.C.; one brother, Harry Manuel of Lake Charles; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Her funeral was held Tuesday, Dec. 27 in Hixson Funeral Home of Lake Charles. The Rev. Lloyd Carroll officiated. Burial was in Lacassine Cemetery.

Eddie W. Marcantel

Eddie Wayne Marcantel, 62, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005 in the DeQuincy hospital.

He was a lifelong resident of DeQuincy and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Marcantel of DeQuincy; one daughter, Arlene “Poochie” Edwards of LaPorte, Tex.; and one grandson.

His funeral was held Thursday, Dec. 22, in Hixson-Snider Funeral Home. The Rev. Rob Sumrall officiated. Burial was in McFatter Cemetery.

Hubert McDaniel

Hubert Wade McDaniel, 67, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, in a Lake Charles hospital.

Survivors include one daughter, Katherine Carley and husband Robert of Sulphur; two sons, Jimmy McDaniel of DeQuincy, and James McDaniel; two sisters, Nell Grimm of Hudson and Marie Johnson ; three brothers, Raymond McDaniel, Eugene McDaniel and George McDaniel; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Friday, Dec. 23, at Hyatt Cemetery in Fields under the direction of Hixson-Snider.

Willis McKnight

Willis (Snooks) McKnight, 80, a native of Oretta, died Aug. 9, 2005, in Weimar, Calif. He was the son of Jay and George McKnight. He graduated from Singer High School, went into the Navy and stayed in California.

He is survived by one daughter, two sons and four brothers, Wilburn (Shorty) McKnight, Harlan McKnight, and Alvin McKnight, all of Lumberton, Tex., and Pee Wee McKnight of Oakdale; two sisters, Versie Frederick of Vidor, Tex., and Aline Main of Oretta.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Dempsy Perkins

Dempsy Clyde Perkins, 64, of Reeves, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2005. His funeral was held Tuesday, Dec. 27 at the Reeves Bible Church.

Bro. Glenn Ducharme officiated, assisted by Bro. Marvin Holland and Don Bennett.

He was a lifelong resident of Reeves and one of the last old-time sheep farmers and traditional woodworkers of our time. He was a graduate of the University of Florida Forest Ranger School, 1960.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda LeBlanc Perkins; four children, Amanda Perkins of Reeves, Sara Goos of Moss Bluff, Amy Holland of Reeves and Curry Perkins of Reeves, and six grandchildren.

Mr. Perkins was inducted into the Louisiana Hall of Master Folk Artists at the annual Natchitoches/NSU Folk Festival in 2002. He was recognized for his woodworking crafts.

When not occupide with raising sheep, Mr. Perkins performed traditional crafts such as white oak basket making, making blacksmith tools, and making syrup. He learned these skills from his grandfather and has continued using them every day while living on the farm.

Mr. Perkins worked with his wife, Brenda, on white oak baskets using 18th and 19th century methods when working on his crafts.

Archie Trahan

Archie Donald “A.D.” Trahan, 68, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, in a Lake Charles hospital.

He was born in Johnson Bayou and lived in Grand Chenier after Hurricane Audrey in 1957. He was a member of St. Eugene Catholic Church. He worked for McDermott Trans Ocean Oil and later retired with Mobile Oil Co. After his retirement he worked with C&B Consultants as a gauger.

Survivors include his wife, Melba “Boonie” Trahan of Grand Chenier; four sons, David Trahan and wife Jendy of Creole, Martini Trahan and wife Bitsy of Grand Chenier, Ronald Dupuis of Sweetlake, and Scott Trahan and wife Michelle of Creole; five brothers, Pete Trahan of Cameron, Jack Trahan of Lake Charles, James Trahan of Cameron, Francis “Pumpkin” Trahan of DeQuincy, and Jesse Nunez of Big Lake; one sister, Barbara Wolfe of Cameron; and seven grandchildren.

His funeral was held Saturday, Dec. 24, in St. Patrick Catholic Church. The Revs. Joseph McGrath and Vincent Vadakkedath officiated. Burial was in Immaculate Conception Cemetery.

Martha Welch

Martha Sue Welch, age 58, of DeQuincy, died Tuesday, Dec. 27 in a Sulphur hospital.

Funeral arrangements are pending, and the funeral will be held at Northside Baptist Church.

John Taylor

Funeral services for Mr. John “Johnny” Taylor were held Saturday Jan. 7, at Beauregard Memorial Baptist Church. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Mr. Taylor was a native of Longville and a long standing member of Beauregard Memorial Baptist Church.

He is survived by four daughters, Tonie Trahan and husband Tommy of Longville, Tammy Smith and husband Jessie of Longville, Amanda Puckett of Longville, and Kris Taylor of Silsbee, Tex.; two sons, John “Buck” Taylor and wife Lisa of Spring, Tex., and Chris Puckett of Longville; two brothers, Earl J. Taylor of Egan and Mark Taylor of Alvin, Tex.; one sister, Carolyn Whittington of Florine; and nine grandchildren, Amanda Puckett, Chris Puckett, Amber Trahan, Mitchell Taylor , Michael Trahan, Taylor Smith, Jonah Taylor Garrett Smith and Jake Taylor .

He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia L. Taylor ; his father Burton “Buddy” G. Taylor and mother Mildred “Toopie” Taylor .

Hixson-Snider Funeral Home of DeQuincy was in charge of the arrangements.

Wanda Bennett

Wanda Rae Bennett, 61, of DeQuincy, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, in the DeQuincy hospital.

A native of DeQuincy, she was a member of Hargrove Bible Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Harold “Pandy” Bennett of DeQuincy; three sons, Davey “Hank” Burnett and wife Marcy and Chris Bennett, all of DeQuincy, and Larry Bennett and wife Joyce of Lake Charles; two daughers, Shelia “Punkin” Cobler and husband Douglas of Oretta and Dee Anne Hemterley and husband Derick of Houston; three brothers, Harvey Parker and wife Beth and Billy Parker and wife Olga, all of DeQuincy, and J.C. Parker and wife Liz of DeRidder; one sister, Donna Mae Burnett and husband Odell of DeQuincy; twelve grandchildren, Luke, Jeremy, Jerry, Cody, Tori, Ethan, Randi, Kay, Amanda, Brenton Dale, Cindy, Darrell and Rodney,; and two great-grandchildren, Kaeleigh Rae and Krysta.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Thelma Parker; and son, Darrell “Wallace” Burnett.

Her funeral was held Monday, Jan. 2, in Hargrove Bible Baptist Church. The Revs. Paul Nugent and Harry Methvin officiated.

Burial was in Oretta Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Snider Funeral Home.

Robert Chambers

Robert Ray “Chi-Chi” Chambers, 47, died Monday Jan. 9, 2006.

He was a former operator at Citgo for 25 years. He attended Abundant Life Fellowship Church.

He is survived by his mother, Sadie Chambers; three sons, Ryan, Tyler, and Grant Chambers; two daughters Morgan and Lee Ann Chambers; two sisters, Yvonne Granger and husband Lindsay, Brenda Blagrave and husband Arnold.

His funeral will be held Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home. Burial will be in Perkins Cemetery under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home.
