Kylee Dyson

Kylee Rose Dyson, 2, of DeRidder died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009. A Rosary was held Friday, Feb. 6, at Myers Colonial Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 8, at Grace Church. Officiating was Bro. Roger Gill. Burial was in Newlin Cemetery in Singer.

Survivors include her father, Jimmy L. Dyson, Jr. and mother, Amy Dyson, of DeRidder; one brother, Phillip Lee Williams of DeRidder, two sisters, Katelyn Lee Ann Dyson of Foley, Ala. and Ana Michelle Williams of DeRidder; grandparents, Jimmy L., Sr. and Lorraine Dyson of Cameron, Jerry and Shirley Gilmer of DeRidder.

Courtland Stokes, Sr.

Funeral services for Courtland “Dink” Stokes, Sr. were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4, in New Hope Baptist Church in Calcasieu with Rev. Brian Johnson and Rev. Mickey Christy officiating. interment was in New Hope Cemetery under the direction of Rush Funeral Home in Glenmora.

Mr. Stokes, 75, of Melder entered eternal rest surrounded by his children on Monday, Feb. 2, 2009 in Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria.

Courtland was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Stokes; one son, Winfred Stokes; two grandchildren, Melissa Sigler and Elvis Gene Vaughn and his parents, Charlie and Ada Stokes.

Those left to mourn his loss and cherish his memory are three sons, Courtland Joseph Stokes, Jr. of Iota, Craig Allen Stokes of Cotile Lake and Carlis Wayne Stokes of Oretta; one daughter, Mary Ann Chevalier of Melder; four brothers, Julius Stokes, Sr. of Alexandria. Charles Milton Stokes, Jr. of Gulfport, Miss., Lee Stokes and Derald Stokes, both of Alexandria; three sisters, Verna Turrentine, Mary G. Whitehead and Helen “Tootie” Squires, all of Alexandria; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Pallbearers honored to serve were Carlis “Boo Boo” Stokes, Jr., Justin Stokes, Rocky Stokes, Josh Laney, Matthew Christy and Pat Perkins.

Friends called at New Hope Baptist Church in Calcasieu on Tuesday, Feb. 3, from 5-10 p.m. and on Wednesday, Feb. 4, from 8 a.m. until time of service at 2 p.m.

Billie Hodges

Billie Hodges, 84, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009 in a local hospital.

She was a native of DeQuincy and has lived here all her life.

She was a member of the Church of Christ of DeQuincy.

Survivors include her three sons, George Hodges Jr., Jon Hodges and wife Tammi, all of DeQuincy, Joe Hodges and wife LaDonna of Bossier City; one daughter, Jennifer LeBleu of DeQuincy; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceeded in death by her husband George Hodges Sr. and one son, Calvin Jeffery Hodges.

Her funeral will be on Thursday, Feb. 12, in Church of Christ of DeQuincy. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Hixson-Snider funeral Home. Vistitation is from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mae Kyles

Mae Vella Monroe Clement Kyles, 90, retired teacher, died in her residence in DeQuincy on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009.

She was born in Gold Dust and was baptized at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

She graduated from Leland College with a B.S. degree in education and had further studies at Texas Southern University in Houston. She taught for over 33 years at Rosenwald, Grand Ave. and DeQuincy High School in DeQuincy and Concordia High School in Ferriday.

Her curch affiliations include the Mount Zion Senior Choir, Senior Mission, Deaconess Board, and serving as a Sunday school teacher.

She was also a member of the Calcasieu Parish and Louisiana Retired Teachers Associations.

She is survived by her children, Joseph D. Clement, Jr. (Margaret), of DeQuincy, Willie Hardy Kyles (Rasheida) of Houston, Te., and daughter-in-law Shirley Mae Clement of Houma and seven grandchildren and fivegreat-grandchildren.

A viewing service for Mrs. Kyles is set for Saturday, Feb. 14, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., followed by the funeral at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church. Rev. Marvin Durgan will officiate. interment will be at Community Cemetery.

Vera McDonald

Verna McDonald, 77, died Thursday Feb. 5, 2009 in her residence.

She was a native of Vinton and retired from Orange Memorial Hospital as a ward clerk.

Survivors include her husband J. D. McDonald of Vinton; two sons, Jay Dale McDonald and James Ray McDonald; three daughters, Jean Martinez, Sharon Myers, and Pamela Corbin; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Her funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 7, in Gambrell Baptist Church in Starks. The Rev. Leonard Estes officiated. Burial was in Niblett's Bluff Cemetery.

William Flower

William Carl Flower, 66, of Houston, Tex. died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008. He was retired from Armco Steel Corp. and had been a long time active member of Christ Church.

He is survived by his wife, Dianne; children, Kenneth Wayne Flower and wife Rebecca, Theresa Lane Flower and husband Richard Winters, and James David Thad Flower and wife Alisa; three grandchildren; a brother, Arnold Adrian Flower of DeQuincy; a sister, Davie Ann Elveston of DeQuincy.

He was preceded in death by his parents Arnold and Nina Vea Flower.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 5, with Bro. Michael J. Anderson officiating. interment was in San Jacinto Memorial Park.

Leonard Ellis, Sr.

Leonard L. “Jack” Ellis Sr., 86, of Sulphur died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, in a local care center.

He was a native of DeQuincy and had been a resident of Sulphur for more than 50 years. He was a graduate of DeQuincy High School, where he played on the all-state football team. Upon graduation, he received a scholarship to LSU, where we played on the football team before joining the Marines during World War II.

He was a member of Maplewood Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and was active in the mission program. He was most recently a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sulphur.

Survivors include one son, Leonard L. “Butch” Ellis and wife Judith of Sulphur; one daughter, Linda Lee Charles and husband Patrick of Oregon; one sister, Buela “Boots” Singley of DeQuincy; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Mae Ellis; and two brothers, Thomas Benjamin Ellis Jr. and Norman Wayne Ellis.

His funeral was held Monday, Jan. 5, in Maplewood First Baptist Church. The Revs. Steven Wright and Charley Watson officiated. Burial was in Mimosa Pines Cemetery.

James Holloway

James Lee "Bo" Holloway, 51, of Starks died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was a native of Starks and was a member of Milwright Local 2484, Boilermaker Local 195 and the Piledrivers Local. He was a certified welder.

He was survived by his wife, Joyce Holloway of Starks; daughters, Christie Holloway and Christina Holloway, both of Starks; sons, Brandon Holloway and James "Taco" Holloway and wife Brandi, all of Starks; sisters, Vickie Mitchell, Janice Wallace, and Mickie Nixon; brothers, Carl Joe Holloway, and David "Porky" Knapp; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Anna Holloway; and sister Nelda Sue "Jeannie" Miller.
His funeral was held Saturday, Jan. 3, in Hixson Funeral Home of Vinton. The Rev. Greg Frazier officiated.

Burial was in Miller Annex Cemetery in Starks.

Ruth Ross

Ruth Humphries Ross, 98, of Lake Charles, died at 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008 in her residence.
Mrs. Ross was born March 25, 1910 in Grayson; lived in Baton Rouge most of her adult life; lived in DeQuincy for 15 years, and has resided in Lake Charles for the past year and a half.

She attended Grayson High School and Louisiana Tech University. She was a member of DeQuincy United Methodist Church and was a member of the DeQuincy United Methodist Women (UMW). Mrs. Ross enjoyed reading, cooking, and gardening. Her life was dedicated to God, her church, and her family.

Mrs. Ross is survived by her son, Gary Lann Ross and wife Donna; daughter-in-law, Garnet Ross, all of Lake Charles; sister, Viva Pruette of Monroe; grandchildren, Angela Marie Ross and Allison Ross of Lake Charles, Gary Lee Ross of Humble, Tex., Joy Yvonne Wallace of Round Rock, Tex., Aimee Buford of Longville, Ben Fruge of Arlington, Tex., Troy Fruge of Pasadena, Tex., Derrick Fruge and Dwayne Fruge, both of Lake Charles; and five great-grandchildren, Tabitha, Aaron, Joel, Garrett, and Paul.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Ross; son, Johnny Dean Ross; and siblings, Edith H. Parnell, B. J. Humphries, Maude H. Mayes, Lottie H. Hartline, Ruby H. Hibbard, Jake H. Humphries, Albert Clinton Humphries, and James Leroy Humphries.

Her funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 2, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Jerry Crise officiated. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. on Friday at Greenoaks Memorial Park in Baton Rouge. Visitation was at the funeral home on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. and continued on Friday from 8 a.m. until time of service.

Shankel Gladden

Shankel Mark Gladden was born in Los Angeles, Calif. He was a member of Greene Chapel A.M.E. Church. He was an active member of the youth choir, junior ushers and served in the Young Peoples Department of the Louisiana and Central Louisiana conferences.

Gladden graduated from Lee High School in May of 2004 and later attended and graduated earning an associate decree from the Los Angeles Workshop of Recording Engineers.

He died Jan. 1, 2009. He was employed at Spanish Moon and Monjunis Italian Cafe.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Gladden; great-grandmother, Maude Edwina Bennett and step-grandfather, Moses Simms Sr.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Reverends Margaret E. and Andrew Simms; his father and stepmother, Micheal and Karen Gladden; two sisters, Shayla Gladden of Baton Rouge and Nicole of Los Angeles, Calif; two brothers, Shaun Gladden of Los Angeles and Micheal of Belize City, Belize; two stepbrothers, Corey and Andrew Simms of Baton Rouge; grandmother, Elva Dizaar of Los Angeles, Calif.; grandfather, Gadsby Ramos of Belize City, Belize; step-grandmother, Evelyn M. Simms.

Services will be held Saturday, Jan. 10, at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, 6175 Scenic Highway, Baton Rouge, beginning at 11 a.m. Visitation will take place at the church, prior to the service from 9-11 a.m. interment will be in Green Oaks Memorial Park on Florida Blvd.
