Wilburn McKnight

Wilburn “Shorty” McKnight, 83, of Lumberton, Tex., died Jan. 1, 2009 at his residence.

Mr. McKnight was a member of the Masonic organization, Lodge’s B. F. Quicksall 1370 A.F.-A.M. and Saratoga 914 A.F.-A.M. He was a 32nd degree Mason. He was district deputy in 1981. He was also a member of the Eastern Star, Evadale Chapter 1111. He served as a Worthy Patron numerous times. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Silsbee. He was retired from Bethlehem Steel and served 20 years in the U. S. Navy. He served during WWII in the south pacific and the Korean conflict, retiring with the rank of CWO II.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce McKnight; daughters, Melissa Littlepage and husband Marvin, Melanie (DeeDee) Sims and husband Dee; son, Bryan McKnight, wife Denise, all of Lumberton; and three grandchildren; brothers, Donald McKnight of Oakdale, Harland McKnight and Alvin McKnight, both of Lumberton; sisters, Versie Frederick, of Vidor, and Aline Main of Singer.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 4, in the Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel.

Martha Welch

Martha Sue Welch, 58, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, in a Lake Charles hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of DeQuincy and was a member of Northside Baptist Church. She worked for Woodards Mini Mart for 15 years. She was also a nurse’s aide for 15 years for Greenhill Nursing Home and High Hope Care Center.

Survivors include her husband, Elton Welch of DeQuincy; one daughter, Jessica Welch of DeQuincy; two stepsons, Carlton Welch of DeQuincy and John Welch of Shreveport; two step-daughters, Marlene Moore of Walker, and Pamela Andrews of Sugartown; one brother, Howard “Pete” Keel of DeQuincy; four sisters, Ruth Stevens of Singer, Delores Shoemake and Jaunita Marcantel, both of DeQuincy; and Linda Shoemake of Sulphur; seven step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Her funeral was held Thursday, Dec. 29, in Northside Baptist Church. The Revs. Jerry Williams and Ray Clark officiated. Burial was in Perkins Cemetery.

Donations can be made for funeral expenses at Chase Bank.

Wanda Bennett

Wanda Rae Bennett, 61, of DeQuincy, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, in the DeQuincy hospital.

A native of DeQuincy, she was a member of Hargrove Bible Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Harold “Pandy” Bennett of DeQuincy; three sons, Davey “Hank” Burnett and wife Marcy and Chris Bennett, all of DeQuincy, and Larry Bennett and wife Joyce of Lake Charles; twin daughers, Shelia “Punkin” Cobler and husband Douglas of Oretta and Dee Anne Hemterley and husband Derick of Houston; three brothers, Harvey Parker and wife Beth and Billy Parker and wife Olga, all of DeQuincy, and J.C. Parker and wife Liz of DeRidder; one sister, Donna Mae Burnett and husband Odell of DeQuincy; twelve grandchildren, Luke, Jeremy, Jerry, Cody, Tori, Ethan, Randi, Kay, Amanda, Brenton, Dale, Cindy, Darrell and Rodney,; and two great-grandchildren, Kaeleigh Rae and Krysta.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Thelma Parker; and son, Darrell “Wallace” Burnett.

Her funeral was held Monday, Jan. 2, in Hargrove Bible Baptist Church. The Revs. Paul Nugent and Harry Methvin officiated.

Burial was in Oretta Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Snider Funeral Home.

Margaret Bredehoeft

Margaret Bredehoeft, 94, formerly of DeQuincy, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, in a Crowley care center.

She was born in DeRidder and had lived in the Crowley area for some years. She was a music teacher for 35 years and played the piano and organ for the church for many years. She was a bookkeeper at Calcasieu Marine Bank.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Edward Bredehoeft; one brother, Welsh Miller; and one sister, Ruth Miller Walker.

Her funeral was held Dec. 29, in First United Methodist Church of DeQuincy. Burial was in DeQuincy Memorial Park.

Ante Corbello

Funeral services for Anite Jacqueline Corbello, 54, of Carlyss, were held Saturday, Dec. 31, in the Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. The Rev. Arvin Harrell officiated. Burial was in the Mimosa Pines Garden of Memories Cemetery in Carlyss.

Mrs. Corbello died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, at her residence.

She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Sulphur and had taught at the former Vincent Christian Academy.

Survivors include her husband Gregory Corbello of Carlyss; one son, Heath Corbello of Carlyss; one daughter, Sherie Corbello Alston and husband Darian of Sulphur; mother, Lulia Bertrand Conner of Lacassine; five brothers, Eddie Conner of Cameron, Alvin Conner of Lake Arthur, Kenneth Conner of Cameron, Berton Conner of Walker, and Erron Conner of Lacassine; nine sisters, Norma Price of Lake Arthur, Linda Hanson of Snellville, Ga., Wendell Welch of DeQuincy, Sandra Kelley of Baton Rouge, Marie Higginbotham of Walker, Tessie Johnson of Houston, Jeanette Conner of Walker, Bertha Fruge of Bell City, and Mona Johnson of Houston; and four grandchildren.

Myrtie Butler

Myrtie Odell Butler, 74 died Jan. 24, 2009 at Cornerstone Hospital. She was a native of Starks.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Butler of Port Arthur, Tex. and Roger Butler of Starks; one sister, Bobbie Clark of DeRidder; and three grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service held at her home in Starks for friends and family on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m.

Allen Brady

Allen Brady, 59, a native of DeRidder and resident of DeQuincy, died in his residence Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Christensen Funeral Home of Dequincy.

Jason Windham

Jason Drake Windham, 34, a native of Sulphur, and resident of Starks, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at his residence in Starks.

He was a member of Fields Pentecostal Church. Jason was a treasured friend to many that loved hunting, playing music and having a good time with his friends. Above all that he loved in this life nothing compared to the love he had for his family. He was a beloved husband, father and brother and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him and each life that he touched in his own special way.

He was the son of the late Ernest Windham and the late Blanche Drake Windham.

He is survived by his wife of eight years, Sandra Breaux Windham of Starks and one daughter, Haley Rose Windham of Starks; two sisters, Edith Wedin of Starks, Martha Abdel of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three brothers, Ernest Windham of Starks, Robert "Bobby" Windham and wife Ramona of Dequincy, and Gale Dooley of Deweyville.

He was preceeded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Windham; and one brother, Lawrence Windham.

The family received friends from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, and from 10 a.m. until time of service Wednesday, Jan. 28, at First Pentecostal Church in Starks.

Funeral services will be held at First Pentecostal Church at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, with the Rev. Terry Lee officiating. interment will be at Hyatt Cemetery in Fields.

Honore Burton

Honore Faithe “Tootsie” Burge Burton, 72, of Lake Charles died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, in a local care facility.

Ms. Burton was born in DeQuincy and has lived in Lake Charles for most of her life. She attended Central School and St. Charles Academy and was a member of Lake Charles Revival Center. She was the owner and operator of Southtowner Mobile Estates for 25 years.

Ms. Burton is survived by her son, Curt Burton and wife Ann; one grandson, all of Lake Charles; brothers, Edison Burge of New Orleans, Waddell Burge and Frances A. Dressler; and sister, Georgiann Compton, all of Lake Charles.

Her funeral was held Thursday, Jan. 22, at the Johnson Funeral Home chapel. Rev. David Holton officiated. Burial was in Highland Memory Gardens.

Frank Foster

Frank Gerald Foster, 70, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, in his Bancroft residence.

A lifelong resident of Bancroft, Gerald was a graduate of Hyatt High School and served his country in the Army. He was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, during the early 1960s. Gerald was a retired ironworker working with various refineries over the years and was a member of the Ironworkers Local 125.

He was formerly a roughneck in the oil industry and worked with Firestone Tire and Rubber and Levingston Shipyard for a number of years. He was an avid outdoorsman and will be remembered for his ability of designing unique mechanical inventions.

He is survived by his daughter, Diana Kay Wilkins and husband Monroe; grandson, Roe Douglas Wilkins, all of Sour Lake, Tex.; sister, Mary Ann Cooper of DeQuincy; niece, Dewanna “Dee” Cooper Richard and husband Glenn of Lake Charles; mother of his children, Kay Richter of Vidor, Tex.; and his faithful companion of 11 years, his dog ”Lizzard.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Hester Estell Spikes Foster; and son, Frank Douglas Foster.

A gathering of family and friends for a time of remembrance was held Thursday, Jan. 15, in Christenson Funeral Home in DeQuincy.

Graveside services and burial was held 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, in Spikes Cemetery under direction of Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles. The Rev. Guy Snyder officiated.

Maegan Stanley

Maegan Victoria Stanley, 14, a native of Orange, Tex. and resident of Sulphur, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009 in Sulphur. She was a member of First Pentecostal Church. Maegan will forever be remembered as a kinda witty girl who loved life and lived it to the fullest. She was quite the artist and loved drawing, singing and had just started learning to play the guitar.

Anybody who knew her will say that she was a standout kid who had high aspirations in life. She once declared that she was going to be the first woman president. Maegan loved to laugh and spend fun times with her friends and family.

She was a beloved daughter, sister and granddaughter and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her and each life that she touched in her own special way.

She was the daughter of Gregory Stanley of Pascagoula, Miss. and Melissa Sexton Stanley of Sulphur.

She is also survived by her sister, Jessica Stanley of Dequincy; three brothers, William Cullivan Stanley and wife Melissa of Eunice, Tyler Blane Stanley of Jennings, and Cray Thomas Stanley of Pascagoula, Miss.; paternal grandparents, Edgar and Martha Stanley; maternal grandmother, Martha Sexton; maternal great-grandmother, Edna Spears.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Delbert "Buster" Sexton; one cousin, Jason Ronald Stanley; and two uncles, Ronnie Stanley and Jamie Stanley.

The family received friends from 5 to 9 p.m., Sunday, Jan, 18, with a time of reflection and memories for friends and family at 6 p.m. at First Pentecostal Church in Stark. Visitation resumed from 9-11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at the church. Funeral service was held at First Pentecostal Church at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19. Rev. Greg Frazier officiated. interment was in Miller Annex Cemetery in Starks.
