Carl Manuel

Carl Joseph Manuel, age 47, a native of Alexandria, and resident of Starks, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at Calcasieu Cameron Hospital in Sulphur. He was a Catholic by faith.

Carl will forver be remembered as a "Gentle Giant" who loved fishing, riding four wheelers, boating and the river. He was a wonderful cook and the family will always remember his catfish courtbouillon. Carl loved to talk on his C.B. and was always known as "Koolaid".

He was the son of the late Dewey Manuel and Maxine Statum Miller of Starks.

He is also survived by three brothers, Raymond Lynn Manuel and wife Nancy of Lake Charles, Rodney Alvin Manuel and girlfriend Tina of Lake Charles, and Keith Jason Manuel of Starks; numerous nieces, nephews; and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father; and one niece, Shantel Manuel.

A memorial service will be held at Christensen Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, in the Chapel.

Greta Burnett

Greta Louise Burnett, 74, of Longville died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, in her daughter’s residence.

Mrs. Burnett was a native of Newton, Tex., and a longtime resident of Longville.

Mrs. Burnett is survived by her husband, John Sidney Miller; children, Viva Burnett of Phoenix, Wesley Burnett and wife Cindy of Amarillo, Tex., Norma Neel and husband Maurice, Ella Mae Mabile and husband Harris, Denise Clark and husband Mike, Tina Guillory, all of Longville, Debbie Landry and husband Keith of Belle Rose, Homer Burnett and wife Monique of Canyon, Tex., Barbara Lisotta and husband Johnny of Ragley, and Pam Burnett of Dry Creek; sisters, Edna McKnight and Helen Martin; brother, Lucky Broxson; 43 grandchildren; and 73 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Willie Bill Burnett; parents, Wilburn and Ella Mae Broxson and Reuben Hathcock; sister, Jean; brother, Thomas; grandchildren.

Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Faith Baptist Church in Ragley under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. The Rev. Bill Smith and the Rev. Rick Batchelor will officiate. Burial will follow in Dry Creek Cemetery.

Mary McCorquodale

Mary McCorquodale, 91, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, in Beauregard Memorial Hospital in DeRidder.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 19, in Longville First Baptist Church. The Rev. Stuart Graves officiated. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery in Ragley

She was a lifelong resident of Longville and active member of Longville First Baptist Church. She arranged flowers for her church for many years as well taught Bible School and Training Union. She was a member of the WMU.

She is survived by her sons, Alfred A. (Shirley) McCorquodale of Myrtle Creek, Ore., Stephen (Helga) McCorquodale and Donald D. (Ramana) McCorquodale, all of Longville; two daughters, Mary Frances (Gene) Morgan of Longville and Lynndel (Rod) Middleton of Denver; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Frederick Payne

Frederick Anthony Payne, 70, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2009 in Lake Charles where he resided. He was a native of DeQuincy. He was a member of Warren United Methodist Church.

Along with being employed by Firestone as a chemical lab analyst, he worked as a security guard for Security Plus and a dentention officer for the Juvenile Detention Center.

He is survived by two daughters, Dena Payne Smith and Athena Marie Payne, both of Dallas; one brother, Walter Leon Payne Jr. of DeQuincy; and one sister, Marie Payne.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise Payne.

His funeral was held Saturday, Jan. 17, in King’s Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor James Harris of Evergreen Baptist Church officiated. Burial was in Combre Memorial Park.

Brooke Bankens

Brooke Daenien "Brookie D" Bankens, 15, a native of Lake Charles, and resident of Starks, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, unexpectedly in Santa Fe, N. M.

She was a member of First Pentecostal Church in Starks. Brooke will forever be remembered as a sweet girl who loved poetry, the outdoors, animals and singing. She especially loved the song "Amazing Grace". Above all that she loved in this life, nothing compared to the love she had for her family.

“Brookie D” will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her and each life that she touched in her own special way. She was the daughter of Sherry Rafati of Starks. She is also survived by her two sisters, Amber Nichole Masten and her husband Justin of Jackson ville, N. C. and Brytni Genene Bankens of DeQuincy, one brother, Ronnie Charles Frazee and wife Stormy of Starks, and maternal grandparents, Charles and Louise Gaskins of Starks.

The family received friends from 6-10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, and from 9-10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, at First Pentecostal Church in Starks. Funeral services were held at First Pentecostal Church at 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 11. The Rev. Greg Frazier officiated. interment was in Fountain Cemetery in Starks.

John Sandiferd

John Colter Sandiferd, 24, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009.

A lifelong resident of Ragley, he was a member of Topsy Baptist Church.

Survivors include his parents, Randy and Patricia Sandiferd of Topsy; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John M. Sandiferd of Elton and Mr. and Mrs. Joe McQueen of Houston; his sisters, Sarah Hines and husband Justin of Topsy and Krystal McQueen of Houston; and his financee, Jill Ernest of Moss Bluff.

His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15, at Topsy Baptist Church. The Rev. Lloyd Carroll will officiate. Burial will follow in Magnolia Cemetery in Ragley under the direction Hixson Funeral Home of Moss Bluff.

Wilma Eldridge

Wilma E. Eldridge, 77, of Washington Courthouse, Ohio, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 in Ohio. She was a native of DeQuincy and had lived in Danville, Ind. before moving to Ohio about three years ago. She was the daughter of the late Louis and Ruby Baggett of DeQuincy.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 7, in Washington with Pastor Dan Justice officiating. Burial was in Highlawn Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter, Janna Dawes and grandson Cory, both of Washington , and two sisters, Marjorie Doyle and Idell Allen, both of DeQuincy.

Thomas Hendricks

Thomas Patrick Hendricks, 50, died Jan. 9, 2009, at a Lake Charles hospital.

Born in Baton Rouge, he lived in Ragley and was Catholic. He worked as an automotive mechanic and owned his own computer business. A graduate of Alexandria Senior High School, he collected classic and antique automobiles.

Survivors include his father, Tirie Hendricks of Ragley; one sister, Teresa Hendricks Chambers of Houston.

His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, from St. Theodore Catholic Church in Moss Bluff under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home of Moss Bluff. Monsignor Charles Dubois will officiate. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Greenoaks Cemetery in Baton Rouge.

Ronda Conner

Ronda Gail Conner, 50, a native of Rush Springs, Okla. and a resident of Starks, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at her residence in Starks.

She was a Baptist by faith. Ronda loved gardening and took much pride in her plants and flowers. She was a very outgoing lady who was always friendly and quite the conversationalist. Above all that she loved in this life nothing compared to the love she had for her children and grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Charlie Barks and the late Mona Boatwright Barns.

She is survived by her significant other, Terry Statum of Starks; one daughter, Summer Statum and husband Scott of Starks; three sons, John Paul Bartholamew and wife Candace, Richie Conner and Jason Ledger, all of Starks; three sisters, Rebecca Statum and husband "Bo" of Starks, Marla Jones of Oklahoma City, Okla., her "sissy", Nyssa Lynn Barks of Starks; two brothers, Charles Barks of Starks and Rodney Jones of Oklahoma City, Okla; nine grandchildren, McKenzie Bartholemew, Kylee Gail Crawley, Ashlyne Jade Scott, Bryson Day, Garson Day, Jaydyn Statum, Babby Statum, Jared Statum and Kaleb Singleton.

The family received friends from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, at First Baptist Church of Starks. The funeral service was held at First Baptist Church at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15. Rev. Ron Fox officiated.

Bonnie Perkins

Bonnie Ruth Perkins, 70, Passed away Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009 in a Lake Charles Hospital.

She was born in Dequincy, and had lived there all her life, Mrs. Perkins was a member of Hargrove Bible Baptist Church. She retired as a cook with the Calcasieu Parish School Board.

She is survived by three sons, Vance Dewayne Perkins and wife Ginny, Derrick Eugene Perkins and Jason Todd Perkins, all of Dequincy; a daughter, Angela Ruth Burgess and husband Butch of Longville; two brothers, Harry Methvin of Dequincy and Gerald Methvin of Slaughter; two sisters, Barbara Young of Baton Rouge and Billie Clayton of Crowley; three grandchildren, Jonathon Perkins, Hollie Vincent, and Katie Burgess.

She was preceeded in death by her husband, Jerry Vance Perkins; her parents, Horace (Buster) Methvin and Ella (Tish) Methvin and twin infants.

Her funeral was held Tuesday Dec, 15, at 2 p.m. in Hargrove Bible Baptist Church. Bro. Harry Methvin officiated. Visitation was from 2 till 9 p.m. Monday at Hixson-Snider Funeral Home in Dequincy and from 10 a.m. Tuesday until time of service at the church. Burial was in Perkins Cemetery.

Billie McBroom

Billie Cooley McBroom, 72, died Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, in a Houston care facility.

A native of DeQuincy, she lived in Westlake a number of years and had resided in Houston the last 14 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Westlake and had attended Metropolitan Baptist Church in Houston. She volunteered at the elementary school.

She is survived by her son, Michael McBroom and wife Kimberly; daughter, Robin Clarke and husband John; five grandchildren; and sister, Bonnie Hayes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert McBroom.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Dec. 15, in Johnson Funeral Home. Private graveside services followed. The Rev. Mark Theriot officiated.
