Gregory McCoy

Gregory W. McCoy, 53, of Houston and native of DeQuincy, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009 at Southwest Herman Memorial Hospital.

He was a member of the Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Marines. He graduated from DeQuincy High School where he was a football player.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred McCoy; two daughters, Tonishia Lewis and Ruby McCoy; two sons, Gregory McCoy and Danny Davis; one brother, Eddie L. McCoy, Jr.; five sisters, Debra Griffin, Cheryl McCoy, Trina Pullard, Phyllis Jones, and Michelle Dixon.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, in Houston, Tex. at McCoy & Harris Funeral Home. The Rev. Maurice Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Veteran Memorial Cemetery.

John Seibert

John "Jack" Seibert, 85, died Dec. 11, 2009 in a local hospital.

He was a resident of DeQuincy for the past nine years, coming from New York.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine Heyman Seibert; and sister, Helen Siebert of Baylon, N.Y.

Tommy Pinder

Funeral services for Tommy Pinder, 75, of Houston were held Wednesday, July 2, at 2 p.m. He was born May 19, 1933. He entered into eternal rest June 28, 2008. Service was held at Brookside Chapel of chimes. Rev. Don Kidd officiated. interment was in Brookside Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Mr. Pinder died at 7:46 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Hermann Hospital. He was a native of DeQuincy and moved to Texas in 1953. He retired from Missouri Pacific Railroad after 31 years of service.

Survivors include two daughters, LaVerne Ybarbo of Houston, Tex., Laura Ann Bentley of Shepherd, Tex.; three grandchildren, Angelica ybarbo-Gonzalez of Houston, Tex., Amberlea Duke of Livingston, Tex. and Michael Bentley Jr., of Sheperd, Tex.; three great-grandchildren, Giovanni and DiAngelo Gonzales of Houston, Tex. and Breanna Duke of Livingston. Also his wife of 22 years, Frankie L. Davis Pinder; one sister, marilyn Starks; two brothers, Wimpy Pinder and Raymond Pinder.

Pallbearers were Gary Golzalez, Billy Duke, Ricky Berzas, David Pinder, Jarvis Green, Kalob Bentley.

We love you, Dad.

Gladys Smith

Gladys Opal (Borel) Smith was born in Port Arthur, Tex. on Aug. 3, 1920, the daughter of Anita and Elton Borel. She Passed away July 4, 2008 in Napa, Calif.

Gladys married Robert B. Smith of DeQuincy, on Feb. 22, 1941 at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. After graduating from high school in DeQuincy, Mrs. Smith attended Southwestern Business College in Houston, Tex. She worked as a secretary to an oil company executive before her marriage.

When Lt. Smith was ordered to active duty by the U. S. Army in 1941, Mrs. Smith accompanied him to army posts in North Carolina, Oklahoma , Indiana, Tennessee and Kentucky before he left for Europe in 1944. After the end of World War II, Mrs. Smith served with her husband in the Philippine Islands, Georgia, Kansas, Washington , D. C., Hawaii before statehood, Pennsylvania , Virginia, Maryland, Okinawa and at his retirement post at the Presidio of San Francisco.

While serving with her husband at the various military posts she was active in the Officers Wives club activities, various community projects and in volunteer service organizations at each installation.

When her husband retired from the Army as a Major General at his last duty station, Mrs. Smith selected the Napa Valley as the place she wished to have her retirement home. The general saluted smartly and agreed to move her to Napa in July 1973.

The Smiths were active members and leaders of Silverado Country Club since 1976. She was an active participant in the bridge and social activities of the club until she became ill, plus volunteering her services in other community and church affairs.

She is survived by husband, Robert B. Smith of Napa, Calif.; daughter, Susan of Napa, Calif.; son, Richard Alan of Mendocino, Calif. She was preceded in death by a son, Bruce.

Mrs. Smith has been a member of St. Apollinaris Catholic Church since 1973. A funeral mass will be held at the church, 3700 Lassen Street, Napa, Calif. 94558, at 11 a.m. Friday, July 11, with Monsignor Joseph Alzugaray officiating. interment at Napa Valley Memorial Park is private. Arrangements are under the care of Inspiration Chapel, 2383 Napa-Vallejo Hwy, Napa, CA 94558.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Apollinaris Building Fund, or to a charity of the donors’ choice.

Bronis Treme

Bronis Bonette Dickerson Treme, 70, native of DeQuncy, and resident of Sulphur, died Friday, July 4, 2008, at Calcasieu Cameron Hospital in Sulphur. She was a member of Hargrove Bible Baptist Church.

Bronis will forever be remembered as a kind and compassionate lady who loved people. She was a Dietician for over 23 years at the Green Hill Nursing home.

She was well known as a caregiver and very dedicated to her profession. She loved fishing and growing flowers. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her and each life that she touched in her own special way.

She was the daughter of the late Anderson Dickerson and the late Margaret Garby Dickerson.

She is survived by her husband Winston Treme of Sulphur; two daughters, Tammy Hentzen and husband Patrick of Flower Mound, Tex., Darlene Heavin and husband Gary of Chickasha, Okla.; one step-daughter, Rebecca Williamson and husband Dennis of Moss Bluff; four step-sons, Mark Treme and wife Mary Ann of Lake Charles, Neil Treme and wife Leanne of Virginia, Anthony Treme and Timothy Treme and wife Lynne of DeQuincy; two sisters, Juanita Midkiff of Dequincy, and Betty Lou Myers of Lake Jackson , Tex.; 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Mary Ruth Lyons; and one infant brother.

Funeral service was held at Hargrove Bible Baptist Church Monday, July 7. Bro. Harry Methvin and Rev. Paul Nugent officiated. interment was in Perkins Cemetery in DeQuincy.

Earline VanWinkle

Earline Taylor VanWinkle, 76, a lifelong resident of DeQuincy, died Sunday, July 6, 2008, at the Merryville Nursing Home in Merryville. She was a longtime member of Truth Apostolic Church where over the years she has served as Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member, Youth Leader, Ladies Auxiliary President. She is also credited for starting the children's church ministry.

She was the daughter of the late Earl Taylor and the late Mary Lee Hyatt Taylor .

She is survived by her husband, Herbert VanWinkle of DeQuincy; one daughter, Sharilyn Terry and husband Steve of El Dorado, Ark.; and one son, Patrick VanWinkle of The Woodlands, Tex.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held at Truth Apostolic Church Tuesday, July 8. Rev. Jimmy White officiated. interment was in Masonic Cemetery in DeQuincy.

Vivian Franks

Vivian L. Whitman Franks, 79, of Merryville died Thursday, July 3, 2008, in De-Quincy Memorial Hospital.

Her funeral was held Saturday, July 5, at Boxwood Church of Christ in Bivens. Bro. R. C. Franks and Bro. Ray Franks officiated. Burial was in Bivens Cemetery under the direction of Myers-Colonial Funeral Home of DeRidder.

Ms. Franks was a member of Boxwood Church of Christ.

Survivors include her four sons, Johnnie and Kayla Franks, Hershell and Becky Franks and Leslie and Laurie Franks, all of Merryville, and Anthony and Chevelle Franks of Bon Weir, Tex.; two daughters, Rhoda Jeans and Wes and Mary Cornwell and David, all of Merryville; one brother, Paul Whitman of DeQuincy; three sisters, Merlene Willett of Nederland, Tex., Doris Busby of Gainsville, Ga., and Catherine Sue Hollie of Cleveland, Tex.; 18 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ozel Franks and Lois L. Franks; one daughter, Paula Cornes; one grandson; and two great-grandchildren.

Ruth Loftin

Ruth Jane Cooper Loftin, 88, of Lake Charles died Friday, June 27, 2008 in her residence.

Mrs. Loftin was born July 30, 1919 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. and graduated as a Registered Nurse from Pennsylvania . On March 9, 1946, she married the love of her life and moved to Lake Charles. Mrs. Loftin began her nursing career at St. Patrick Hospital in the early 1950s.

At the opening of Moss Regional Hospital, she was called to be the night nurse supervisor until its closing in 1969. She was one of the five nurses at the Family Planning Clinic before beginning her career at the Calcasieu Parish Health Unit until her retirement in 1984.

Until recently, Mrs. Loftin volunteered her time to help vaccinate children and administer flu shots. She attended Boulevard Church of Christ and was a member of Boulevard Baptist Church. She enjoyed cross-stitching, knitting, and crocheting and was an avid reader. She will always be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Loftin is survived by her sons, Ted H. Loftin, Jr. and wife Mary Loftin of Port Neches, Tex. and John Loftin and wife Charlotte Richardson Loftin of Lake Charles; daughter, Jane LeBleu and husband Lester LeBleu of Topsy; grandchildren, Allen and Gregory LeBleu, Brenda Anderson and Sarah Elizabeth Kiff; and nine great-grandchildren.

Shortly after the celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary, her husband, Theodore “Ted” Harold Loftin, Sr., Passed away. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Catherine Muir Cooper; three brothers; and two sisters.

Her funeral service was held Monday, July 7, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Paul Franks officiated. Burial was in Orange Grove Cemetery.

Jimmy McDaniel

Jimmy Wayne McDaniel, 42, of Sulphur and formerly of DeQuincy, died Tuesday, July 1, in a local hospital.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 3, at Hixson-Snider Funeral Home. interment was in Hyatt Cemetery.

Survivors include one sister, Catherine McDaniel Dobbs and one brother, James McDaniel, both of Sulphur.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wade and Linda McDaniel.

Richard Naquin

Richard “Ernest” Naquin, 71, of Bundick’s Lake died, Monday, June 30, 2008, in his residence.

He was a native of Mamou and lived in the Bundick’s Lake community for the past 20 years. Mr. Naquin was a veteran of the U. S. Army and worked in the oilfield until retiring from Tenneco Oil Co.

He is survived by two daughters, Tammy Sue Puckett and Monica Lynn Naquin, both of Moss Bluff; one son, Kevin Granger and wife Melanie of DeQuincy; seven grandchildren, and one great-grandson, the mother of his children, Barbara Naquin; six brothers, Carl, Billy, Steve, Raymond, Donald and Bill Naquin; five sisters, Virgie Lynn, Clara, Carolyn, Sadie and Audrey. He was preceded in death by a sister, Irene and two brothers, Russell and Wilbert.

His memorial service was held Wednesday, July 2, in the Johnson Funeral Home chapel. Carl Patterson spoke at the service.

L. B. Strong, Jr.

Funeral services for L. B. “Bud” Strong Jr., 76, of Lone Star, Tex. were held Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Lone Star with the Rev. Robert Norris officiating. interment was in Iron Bluff Cemetery under the direction of Nail-Haggard Funeral Home.

Mr. Strong was born July 3, 1931, in Shreveport and died June 29, in Lone Star. He was a Baptist and member of the National Rifle Association. He worked for Sitel Corp. for the last five years. Mr. Strong graduated from DeQuincy High School, class of 1948.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara K. Strong of Lone Star, sons and daughters-in-law, Randal B. and Cathy Strong of Baytown, Tex. and Philip W. and Becky Strong of Diana, Tex., Scot and Torri Wright of Ore City, Tex.; daughter, Trisha Carey of Lone Star; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Ann Strong of Dripping Springs, Tex., sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor Sue and J. E. Yellott of Houston, Randall and Phillip’s mother, Marilyn Works of Longview; Mike Yellott of Cummings. Ga., Dale Yellott of Plymouth., Mass. and Mark Peppard of Austin; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Strong Sr. Mr. Strong , Sr. was employed here by the Missouri Pacific Railroad.

Pallbearers were Roger Reynolds, Clay Slaughter, Donnie Kaiser, Halley Moor, Jr., Malvin Nix, and Mark Brundige.
