Donald VanWinkle

Donald VanWinkle, 90, Passed away on Saturday, July 14, 2012 in a local nursing home.

Mr. VanWinkle was a WWII Veteran, Army W2 Officer with 35 Years Military Service with the Army National Guard. He was an avid fisherman, professional square dancer and enjoyed his retirement with his wife traveling throughout the 48 states.

Mr. VanWinkle was preceded in death by his brothers, Allen VanWinkle, Albert VanWinkle, Roy VanWinkle and Edward VanWinkle; and sisters, Edna Alston, Katherine Pearce and Otis Pinder.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Eunice Mae Barrow VanWinkle; one son, Jimmy Don VanWinkle; one daughter, Patricia Sonnier; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Monday, July 16, from 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m. at Hixson-Snider Funeral Home Chapel and Tuesday, July 17 from 10 a.m. until service time.

His funeral was held Tuesday July 17, at the Hixson-Snider Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home.

Carole Stanley

Carole Wendell Stanley, 71, died Saturday, July 14, 2012, at his residence. He was a native of Starks and had been a longtime resident of Vinton. He was a member of Starks First Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include three sons, Carole Wendell Stanley, Jr. of Vinton, Dwayne Hamilton of Vinton, and Jeff Hamilton and wife, Pat of Lubbock, Texas ; two daughters, Cindy Guthrie and husband, Hal of Houston, Texas , and Ramona Adams and husband, Monty of Ponchatoula; his siblings, Verble, Joseph, and Robert Stanley, Sandra Peveto, and Lillian Howard, all of Starks, and Cecil Stanley of Lumberton, Texas ; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Elroy and Jerry Stanley.

His funeral was held Monday, July 16, in First Pentecostal Church of Starks. Rev. Greg Frazier officiated. Burial was in Miller Annex Cemetery.

Mary Jones

Mary Belle Wray Jones Passed away peacefully at the age of 84 on July 2, 2012 in Lake Jackson , Texas , surrounded by her family.

Mary Belle was born on Nov. 23, 1927 to parents William Thomas and Madonna Mozelle Hunt Wray in DeQuincy. She was sister to the Late General William Robert Wray and his wife Mary and Margaret Ann Wray Kennedy and her late husband Fred. She was the granddaughter of her beloved Mary Grace Hunt (Nana). Mary Belle was the Salutatorian of her high school class. Along with her brother and sister, she won the prestigious American Legion award upon graduation from high school for outstanding citizenship and honor. She graduated LSU with honors, and was President of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority and Graduated Phi Kappa Phi with her Masters. She was especially proud of her Chickasaw Indian Heritage.

On June 25, 1949, Mary Belle married her friend and beau, Wyatt M. Jones, Jr. and enjoyed over 56 years of marriage until his death in 2006.

Mary Belle was a lifelong teacher, Girl Scout troop Leader, Cub Scout den mother, Little League team mother, President of Houston Panhallenic, school teacher and was involved with her church while raising her family in Houston.

She moved with her family to the Brazosport area in 1968 and started her Real Estate career and became a Broker and successful owner of Brazosport Property Services for over 30 years. Mary Belle was one of the founders of the Brazoria County Board of Realtors and served in many positions throughout her real estate career. She also taught Real Estate classes at Brazosport College.

She and her late husband Wyatt M. Jones, Jr. enjoyed traveling throughout the world, visiting Isreal, Egypt, Germany, France, Britain and Spain. She was an accomplished cook and along with being a career woman, cooked meals for her husband and family most evenings and after church on Sunday. Her holiday meals and recipes at Thanksgiving and Christmas time will be missed.

Mary Belle is survived by her children, Donna Jones Selman and husband TC Selman II, and Wyatt Alan Jones and wife Linda Riggin Jones; grandchildren, Brooke Selman Williams and husband Craig, Trey Jones, Trey Selman, Jennifer Jones, Lindsey Jones Woodfill and unborn daughter Charlotte Kay Woodfill and husband Kyle; great-grandchildren, Cullen, Holden and Camp Williams; nephews, Robert and Steven Wray, Stephen Kennedy, Ronnie and Mark Perkins and Steven Locklin; and nieces, Linda Wray, Karen Kennedy McGraw and Stephanie Perkins Chamblee.

The family received friends at the Lakewood Funeral Chapel on Thursday, July 5, from 6-8 p.m.

A memorial service was held on Friday, July 6, at 10:30 a.m. at the Lakewood Funeral Chapel in Lake Jackson , Texas .

The family would like to express special thanks to the people who cared for her the last few years, the staff at Carriage Inn and the staff at Revered Texan Hearth and Home.

James Parker

James Calvin Parker, 86, of DeQuincy, died Friday, July 6, 2012 at his residence. He was a member of Hargrove Bible Baptist Church. He served DeQuincy as Commissioner of Streets and Parks for eight years, supervisor of maintence at Phelps Correctional Center for 22 years and Calcasieu Parish road foreman for five years.

He will be remembered as being a very generous and sincere man. He put his whole heart into everything that he did. He had a heart full of compassion.

There were many times that he took in children and raised them as his own. He also loved raising live stock, gardening, fishing and rabbit hunting.

He was the son of the late John A. Parker and the late Ida PharrisParker.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Revanel Rainwater Parker of DeQuincy; one daughter, Jeannie Parker and husband Arkie of Sulphur; four sons, Jim Parker and wife Carol of Sulphur, John Parker Sr and wife Janice of DeQuincy, Randy Parker and wife Veronica of Lake Charles, and Jason Parker and wife Laurie of DeQuincy; two sisters, Pat Askew of Longview, Texas and Eldie Horton and husband Joe of Kilgore, Texas ; one brother, T. D. Deal and wife Margaret of DeQuincy; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, John M. Parker, Alvin Parker and Leroy Deal; and one sister, Clemie Rice.

The family received friends from 2:30 to 10 p.m. Sunday, July 8, and from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, July 9, at Hargrove Bible Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at Hargrove Bible Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Monday, July 9. Rev. Royce Bailey and Bro. Mike Streams officiated. interment was at Hyatt Cemetery in Fields.

Clara Johnson

Clara M. Johnson , 92, Passed away on Monday, July 9, 2012, in DeQuincy.

Clara was a member of First Baptist Church of Starks where she was the Song Leader for 25 years and served as the Bible School Director for many years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Vinton. She served as Voting Commissioner of Starks for many years also. Even though she had no children of her own she left a loving legacy to her stepchildren and her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Isaac and Laura Loftin; her stepfather, Harry Self; and two husbands, Cecil Allbritton and Ray Johnson .

She is survived by her nephews, Wade Allbritton of Manchaca, Texas , David Allbritton of Jena; stepdaughters, Veda Bussell of Starks and Vanita Gibbs of Mobile, Ala.; stepsons, David Johnson of Starks and Gary W. Johnson of Bay St. Louis, Miss.; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Corry and family of Starks, and Bonnie Hyatt and family of Starks.

Visitation will be held on Thursday July 12, from 5-9 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Starks. Her funeral will be on Friday July 13, at 10 a.m. at the church. interment will be in Miller Cemetery under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home.

Leo Treme

Leo Clyde Treme, 81, of DeQuincy died Sunday, July 8, 2012, at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital in Sulphur.

He was a faithful member and usher at The Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy for 26 years. He was a very loving father and grandfather. He loved people, always putting others ahead of himself. He was an excellent electrician and was very giving of his time and talent. He instilled in his family the value of having a good name. He loved fishing, gardening, woodworking and making toys for his grandchildren. He also loved people. He never met a stranger. He will be remembered for his good sense of humor.

He was the son of the late Columbus Treme and the late Adeline (Doise) Treme.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Maxcille Treme of DeQuincy; one daughter, Donna Brantley and husband Ernie of DeQuincy; six sons, Garland Treme and wife Nona of DeQuincy, Darrell "Dody" Treme and wife Renee of Lake Charles, Russell Treme of Lake Charles, Brady Treme and wife Sharon of Singer, Roger Cobb and wife Anne of Sulpher, and Don Cobb and wife Debra of Westlake; two sisters, Rose Lyons of Leesville and Lena Marcantel of Sulphur; one brother, Ricky Treme of Baton Rouge; 15 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife of 33 years, Willie Faye Treme; three brothers, Norris Treme, Slim Treme and Eaxt Treme; and one sister, Ruby Lyons.

The family received friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, at Christensen Funeral Home and continues from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at The Pentecostal Church in DeQuincy.

Funeral service will be at The Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 11. Pastor Wayne Neyland and Rev. Kim Marcantel will be officiating. interment will be at Rigmaiden Cemetery in DeQuincy.

Robert Alston

Robert G. “Bobby” Alston, 71, a DeQuincy native, Passed away at his home in Fredricksburg Texas on Friday, June 29, 2012.

His wife of 50 years, Lucille, was by his side at his passing. Bobby is survived by two sons, Clifford of Corpus Christi, Texas , and Brett of Boerne, Texas ; two sisters, Carolyn Lyle of Jeannerette, and Martha Nelle Winston of Waskom, Texas ; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emory and Francis Alston.

A special memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 28, at 2 p.m. at Truth Apostolic Church, 2003 E. Burton St. in Sulphur.

Violet Austin

Violet Hester Baggett Austin, 94, of Longville died Monday, July 9, 2012 at her home.

She is survived by two granddaughters, Stephanie C. Gibbs and Rebekaha L. Cooley of Longville; four grandsons, Rev. Jeffery Cooley and wife, Monica of Ragley, Allan D. Cooley of Longville, William E. Cooley and wife, Nora of Longville, and Buford C. Cooley of Longville; four great grandchildren, Matthew V. Cooley, Katie L. Cooley, Casey L. Colley, Gracie L. Cooley; and one sister, Coralee Slaydon and husband, Ross of Longville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Estel “Josh” Austin; infant son; two daughters, Veronica A. Cooley and LaVonne A. Cooley; parents; and four brothers.

Vistitation will be held Wednesday, July 11, from 5:30 p.m. until time of service on Thursday at First United Pentecostal Church in Ragley.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 12, at 10 a.m. at First United Pentecostal Church in Ragley. Rev. Sean Chisholm and Rev. Jeffery V. Cooley will officiate. interment will be at Magnolia Cemetery.

Dr. George Fisher

Dr. George R. Fisher, 68, of DeRidder, formerly of DeQuincy, died Tuesday, July 10 at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Chaddick Funeral Home, 1931 N. Pine St., DeRidder.

Rodie Kelley

Rodie D. Kelley, 49, of Longville, died Friday, July 6, 2012, in Westlake from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born in Phoenix, Arizona, to Joe and Cathy Anderson Kelley. After his graduation in 1982 from Sam Houston High School, he served in the United Stated Air Force and currently was employed as a security supervisor at L’Auberge du Lac in Lake Charles.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include two sisters, Kris Kelley Brewer of Lake Charles and Robyn Kelley Kibodeaux of Moss Bluff.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 9, at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Chris Fuselier officiated. Burial followed at Magnolia Cemetery in Ragley.
