A resident and native of Bayou Goula, he died at 12:06 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Baton Rouge. He was 73. He was a retired employee of Hebert Bros. at the Dow Chemical site, with 36 years of service. Visiting at St. Luke United Methodist Church, Bayou Goula, from 11 a.m. Saturday until religious services at noon, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Wesley. interment in St. Paul Baptist Church Cemetery. He is survived by wife, Clara Trusclaire Smith; a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Marietta W. Smith, Addis; a brother, Willie Smith Sr., Bayou Goula; a godchild, Willie G. Smith and Borell Harris Jr.; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by a son, Alvin Smith Jr.; parents, Johnny C. Sr. and Lillie Smith; a brother, Johnny C. Smith Jr.; two sisters, Esther Mae Smith Marshall and Anna Smith Gilbert; and two nephews, Willie Smith Jr. and Kevin Gilbert. He was a member of Construction & General Laborers Union Local 1177, chairman of Union Hope Benevolent Association of Bayou Goula, and a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, where he was an active lay leader until his retirement. He was also involved in various other organizations that included Secret Orders. Demby & Son Funeral Home, Donaldsonville, in charge of arrangements.

SPEARS, SR. JAMES MICHAEL "MIKE"
A resident of Baker, he died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at Lane Memorial Hospital, Zachary. He was 47, born Nov. 7, 1954, and a native of Baton Rouge. Visiting was at Baker Funeral Home, Baker, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. Visiting at First United Methodist Church of Baker from 9 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m. Friday, conducted by the Rev. Tom Dolph. interment in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Survived by his wife, Shirlene Catoire Spears; two sons and daughters-in-law, James Michael Spears Jr. and Rebecca, and Landon Kelly Spears and Danielle, all of Walker; mother, Gertrude Webb Wagner of Walker; and four brothers, David Spears, Dale Spears, Jeff Spears and Kenneth Charles Wagner, all of Walker. Pallbearers will be Jimmy LeBlanc , Dale Lasyone, Burt Shaffett, Wayne Bangs, Ronald Catoire and Clyde DuBois. Honorary pallbearers are David Spears, Dale Spears, Jeff Spears and Kenneth Charles Wagner. The family donated his tissues. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Baker.

SPENCER, ROBERT "BLUE DUCK"
Born July 31, 1921, he died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001. He was 80 and a native of Laurel, Miss. Visiting at Welsh Funeral Home chapel from 10 a.m. until religious services at 2 p.m. Friday, conducted by the Rev. Jim Spencer. interment in Roselawn Memorial Park. Survived by his wife, Helen Nalley Spencer; three sons, R. Wilson and wife Mary Lou Spencer, Richard T. and wife Patricia Spencer, and Gene A. and wife Philomena Spencer; two granddaughters, Michelle Ridge and Lori Lopez of California; a grandson, Mathew Patrick Spencer of Virginia; five great-grandchildren, Patrick, Ashley and Gary Ridge and Jessica and Alyssa Lopez; and two sisters-in-law, Ollie Spencer and Delaney Nalley. Preceded in death by his parents, T.D. Spencer and Mary Lou Robison Spencer; and three brothers, Tom, Talmadge and W.E. Spencer. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and was personally chosen by Col. James Roosevelt to be a member of his personal battalion, the Marine Raiders, operating in the South Pacific. He had a very distinguished career, being wounded twice in making six opposed landings against defended beaches. He was noted as a superior riflesmith, an accomplished maker of Indian arrowheads and for his work in developing an Indian village site in eastern Texas , which he donated to the Texas University, known as the Spencer Site. He was employed at the Exxon plant in Baton Rouge for 30 years, having retired due to a disability relating to wounds received in action against the Japanese. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Baton Rouge.

STERLING, DAN
Owner of D&F Construction Co. and a resident of Maringouin, he died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at 5:50 a.m. at Pointe Coupee Hospital, New Roads. He was 78 and a native of Ravenwood. Visiting at A. Wesley Funeral Home, 10810 Ventress Drive, Maringouin, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. Visiting at Wiley United Methodist Church, 2936 La. 976, Lottie, from 9 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. Robert Ross. interment in False River Cemetery, Blanks. Survived by his wife, Thelma Tillman Sterling; 14 children, a stepdaughter and her husband, a sister, a brother and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

TALBOT, CHARLES J. "CHARLIE"
A native and resident of Napoleonville, he died at 8:25 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001. He was 68. Visiting at St. Ann Catholic Church, Napoleonville, from 11 a.m. Saturday until religious services at noon. Survived by his wife, Margie Boudreaux Talbot; two sons, Mitchell and Scott Talbot; two daughters, Gemma T. Svensson and Amy T. Hebert; two sisters, Catherine T. Leonard and Alma T. Termini; and six grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Victoria Blanchard Talbot; and a brother, Samuel J. Talbot. Landry's Funeral Home Inc. in charge of arrangements.

ANDERSON, LOUISE M.
A resident of Greensburg, she died at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at St. Helena Parish Nursing Home, Greensburg. She was 96 and a native of Memphis, Tenn. Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, from 9 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. Luther Stanford. interment in Greensburg Cemetery, Greensburg. Survived by a daughter, Marjorie A. George, Independence; two granddaughters, Barbara Dale Anthony, Las Vegas, and Karen Louise Hillman, Lemoore, Calif.; and six great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband, Edward L. "Ed" Anderson; and a granddaughter, Pamela Sue Bennett.

BRADLEY, DORIS JEAN "NINNIE"
A cosmetologist, a resident of Baton Rouge and a native of Caruthersville, Mo., she died Sunday, Nov, 25, 2001, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Mid City. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Visiting at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m. Thursday. Entombment in Resthaven Mausoleum. Survived by a sister, Barbara Ann Pierce; a brother, Frankie Don Bradley; three grandchildren, Nicole Rudzik and Cory and April Barnett; seven great-grandchildren; and two pets, Gizmo and Trouble. Preceded in death by a son, Mickie Lee Barnett; four sisters; a brother; her parents; and Baron. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

CAMPBELL, THE REV. JOHN L.
A resident and native of Ponchatoula, he died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond. He was 79. He served faithfully in the gospel ministry for 53 years, having retired in 1983 from the Southern Baptist Missions Board. He had been the pastor of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Goodwill Baptist Church, Manchac Baptist Church, Pilgrim’s Rest Baptist Church and Lee Valley Baptist Church. Visitation at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Ponchatoula, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday and after 8 a.m. Wednesday. Religious services in the funeral home chapel at 1 p.m. Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. Charles Reitz, the Rev. Johnny Hernandez and Larry Melancon. interment in Ponchatoula Cemetery. Survived by his wife, Florence Ballard Campbell, Ponchatoula; four sons, John L. Campbell Jr., Albany, Edgar Campbell, Holden, Nathan Campbell, Tallahassee, Fla., and Darrell Campbell, Houston; four daughters, Lana C. Stanford, Hammond, Lois C. Robinson, Fayetteville, Ark., Winnola C. Hedgcoke, Idaho, and Darlene C. Boudreaux, Ponchatoula; two sisters, Dovie Picou, Ponchatoula, and Arminda Lewis, Maurepas; 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, John Hamilton and Pearl Philpot Campbell; a granddaughter, Rachel Brannon; great-grandchildren, Daniel Brannon and Sabrina Campbell-Vercher; a brother, Dick Walker; and a sister, Millie Ruiz.

HEBERT, III A LEON
A Baton Rouge native and longtime resident of Lake Forest, Ill., he died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at home, of amytrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease). He was 63. Memorial services at Church of the Holy Spirit, Lake Forest, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001. Memorial services in Baton Rouge will be held at a later date. Preceded in death by his parents, A. Leon Hebert and Lorelle Seal Hebert; and a sister, Carmelite Hebert Blanco. Survived by his wife of 39 years, Dorothy Ann Carpenter Hebert; and children, A. Leon Hebert IV and wife Giulietta McDonough, John W. Hebert, Barton T. Hebert and Charles F. Hebert; and siblings, Lula H. Pride, P. Michael Hebert, Barbara H. Willis, Maurine H. Pyle, Madeline Hebert and Noel H. Prescott; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was born in Baton Rouge on Oct. 6, 1938. He graduated from Catholic High School and from LSU. He was an early and ardent advocate of environmentally sound reprocessing and recovery of industrial chemicals and spent most of his business life in this arena. His friends and neighbors cherished his companionship, and he was an active participant in community affairs. He began his career with Dow Chemical Co. in Louisiana , later being transferred to Midland, Mich., and then Chicago. After a period of working for Sobin Chemicals IMC in Chicago, he formed his own business, in which he fervently advocated his reprocessing and recovery ideas. Articulate in both speech and writing, he continued to carry his message until his ALS disease prevailed. Memorial donations may be sent to UNICEF Tribute Card Program, 333 E. 38th St., New York, NY 10016.

LEBLANC, JOHN JOSEPH "BUBBIE"
Former owner of Sorrento Service Station for 44 years and a resident of Maurepas, he died at 12:20 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, in Baton Rouge. He was 78 and a native and former longtime resident of Sorrento. Visiting at Ourso Funeral Home, Gonzales, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Visiting at St. Anne Catholic Church, Sorrento, from 8 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Wednesday, concelebrated by the Rev. Keun-Soo Lee and the Rev. Kenneth Smith. Entombment in Holy Rosary Catholic Church Mausoleum, St. Amant. Survived by his wife of 59 years, Rosella Melancon LeBlanc , Maurepas; a daughter and son-in-law, Marla and Charlie Brown, Maurepas; a son and daughter-in-law, Abe and Brenda LeBlanc , Sorrento; five sisters, Ruby LeBlanc , Thilda Walker and Arys Trabeau, all of Sorrento, Audrey Painter, Houma, and Emmaline LeBlanc , Gonzales; two brothers, Joseph B. LeBlanc , Convent, and Elwood LeBlanc , Sorrento; seven grandchildren, Kevin Bovia, Telly, Blain, Jason and Seth LeBlanc , Larka Elisar and Shanette Bechtold; and eight great-grandchildren, Victoria Bovia, Cole Bovia, Tristian LeBlanc , Sierra Schexnayder, Vincent Elisar, Lathan LeBlanc , Angelle LeBlanc and Alexis Bechtold. Preceded in death by his parents, Felicien and Olyampe Villenurve LeBlanc ; two sisters, Winnie LeBlanc and Beatrice L. "Tootsie" Schexnayder; stepmother, Orene Dupuy LeBlanc ; a son, Crawford LeBlanc ; and former son-in-law, Steve Bovia. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bear Island, and former longtime member of St. Anne Catholic Church.

LIUZZA, JOSEPHINE COSTA "PHYNE"
A retired social worker at Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center, Independence, she died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond. She was 75, a resident of Hammond and native of Independence. Visitation was at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with a vigil service at 6:30 p.m. Visiting at the funeral home from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Mass of Christian Burial at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, Independence, at 10 a.m. Tuesday, celebrated by the Rev. Paul McDuffy. interment in Colonial Cemetery. Survived by four daughters, Henrietta Kirby, Hammond, Mary Thornhill, Des Allemands, Kathryn Liuzza, Baton Rouge, and Rosalie Blackledge, League City, Texas ; a son, Henry Leo Liuzza, Franklinton; six sisters, Maryann Catalano, Independence, Veda Costanza, Fallbrook, Calif., Frances Bordelon, River Ridge, Joann Zeringue, Granada Hills, Calif., Kathleen McClain, Baton Rouge, and Bernadette Legoira, Hammond; eight grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. Preceded in death by a daughter, Antoinette Liuzza; an infant son; and parents, Frank and Rosalie Schiro Costa.

MARTSON, SAMUEL
A retired caretaker at Port Hudson National Cemetery and a resident of Baton Rouge, he died at 1:45 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center. He was 70 and a native of McComb, Miss. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. Visiting at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church from 8:30 a.m. Wednesday until religious services at 10 a.m., conducted by the Rev. David Newman Jr. interment in Port Hudson National Cemetery. Survived by his wife, Evelyn Forrest Martson; two daughters, Brenda Franklin, Baton Rouge, and Shirley Wilson and husband Alvin, Oceanside, Calif.; two sons, Henry Harris and wife Mary, and James Palmer and wife Mayola, all of Baton Rouge; a sister, Rosie Mae Sprouls, Flint, Mich.; six sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, 20 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Preceded in death by his parents, a son, three sisters and eight brothers. He was a graduate of Rose Hill High School, Class of 1950, and attended Southern University. Winnfield Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

MCKEE, EDNA LOIS
Lois was born in Baton Rouge on April 17, 1921, grew up in Folsom, then returned to Baton Rouge where she lived until her death Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at the age of 80. She had no children, but her many nieces and nephews revered her as Aunt Lou. Visiting was at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday. Visiting at First United Methodist Church, North Boulevard, from 9 a.m. until religious services at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Graveside services in Bogue Falaya Cemetery, Martinville community near Folsom, at 2 p.m. Tuesday. She is survived by a sister, Doris Bond; two brothers, Larry McKee and Barney McKee; and her oldest nephew, Raymond McKee Jr., who was like a brother. She had a loving family that included 15 nieces and nephews, 23 grandnieces and grandnephews and three great-grand nephews. Besides all her relatives, she had an extended family of friends who loved her. She was preceded in death by parents, Jules Barney and Carrie Wilkins McKee; a sister, Mary Stockwell; and a brother, Raymond McKee Sr. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Welsey Group and Exxon Annuitant Club. She retired from Exxon in 1976 and was an example of how life should be lived to the fullest. She was loved and will be missed immeasurably. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts/donations may be made to The First United Methodist Church.
